View Full Version : Infinite bombard range
Krayzeenbk Sep 14, 2003, 07:49 AM All artillery units can be made to bombard really absurd distances. This happens when several bombard orders are issued in quick succession to a stack of bombard units. The target tile becomes the new center of the screen at some point, and artillery bombards a distant tile as though it were now within its bombard range.
I haven't been able to figure out the exact sequence (yet), but if someone knows it, please post.
I have PTW 1.27.
Here is a screenshot. Number 1 is the artillery stack in question, number 2 is a tile that I was able to bombard right before this screenshot was taken (I was trying to bombard Medina). Number 3 is a tile I was able to bombard earlier with this stack of artillery, but did not take a screenshot in time. The screen is centered on Medina at this point, before, the screen was centered on the tile above Medina.
The artillery has a range of 2.
Bamspeedy Sep 16, 2003, 12:28 PM This is actually quite easy to do. Simply press and hold the B button, then double click with the mouse, while the B button is still being pressed. You only need 1 bombarding unit (catapult, cannon, or artillery), and you can hit *anywhere*, as long as there isn't a military unit standing on that tile.
It works on terrain improvements, but not units or cities. The major exploit is cutting off all their resources.
Krayzeenbk Sep 16, 2003, 12:32 PM Can't say that worked.....
Bamspeedy Sep 16, 2003, 12:52 PM Well I had just downloaded the US version of 1.27, then created a scenario and it worked.
Bamspeedy Sep 16, 2003, 01:02 PM With the scenario I started the game with 9 catapults. Missed on all attempts on the first turn, so I played another turn and tried again. The roads were placed at the start of the game, and I succeeded by cutting the road where my scout is standing.
Even if there isn't roads for you to hit, you can declare war by doing this. Make sure you are hovering the cursor over your intended target and then press and hold the B button and then double click with the mouse.

Krayzeenbk Sep 16, 2003, 01:25 PM How fast is your computer? A lot of bombard issues seem to be speed related in Civ3.... Unless I'm mistaken.
Still haven't been able to do this the way you describe it.
Bamspeedy Sep 16, 2003, 01:32 PM 1.2 GHZ AMD Athlon processor
Compaq Presario
DirectX 9.0
Microsoft optical mouse
Maybe it's a triple click instead of a double click.
Bamspeedy Sep 16, 2003, 01:37 PM Here is a thread (archived) from the 1.21 bug reports that also reported the infinite bombard range, and some other ways of getting it to work.

Krayzeenbk Sep 17, 2003, 02:08 AM I believe I tried more than triple-clicks ;)
This particular bug is a bit different though, since the map recenters and then the bombardment happens on a tile that used to be in the on-screen range of the artillery.
Bluemofia Jan 07, 2004, 09:47 PM this also works for recon, percision strikes, airlift, paradrop, etc.
globester Jan 18, 2004, 06:49 AM worked for me in c3c 1.00 too
