View Full Version : CTR 6 -- The Rain in Spain
ChrTh Sep 23, 2003, 12:44 PM Well, my last couple ideas didn't garner enough interest, but perhaps this one will ...
Civ: Spain (modded--see below)
Difficulty: Deity
World: Waterworld (80% water, wet, hot, old, archipelago)
Size: Large, but Standard # of opponents
Victory condition: Any, although I reckon Conquest will be the likely result
Opponents: Vikings (for the challenge), English (for the Man O' War), others random
Barbarians: None
Changes to the base game:
Galleys will be available with Pottery, and will be 0/1/2, carry 1.
Caravels will be available with Engineering, and will be unchanged stats-wise.
Spain will be Religious and EXPANSIONIST.
Conquistadors will replace Knights, not Explorers. Their stats will remain the same, including the increased cost. Still debating whether or not they'll require Horses and/or Iron (input from players desired).
SCOUTS ARE UPGRADEABLE TO CONQUISTADORS.
Trade over Sea Squares allowed with Engineering
Trade over Ocean Squares allowed with Navigation
Navigation is a pre-requisite for Magnetism
Privateer available with Astronomy; Privateer is Civ-specific
Galleon available with Navigation
Frigate available with Magnetism
Roster:

EDIT: Standard SG rules apply
Rubberjello Sep 23, 2003, 01:28 PM :goodjob: Good ideas there Chrth! I like the rationale behind the mods and would like to join.
I vote you need horses for Conquistadors, but not necessarily Iron.
Caravels and Galleys will be able to travel safely on Sea squares with Engineering, and won't have to wait for Navigation, correct? (The same for trade routes across sea squares?)
I would also like to submit for consideration of moving Magnitism back a bit also, so that we can have a nice "Age of Sail", say making Galleons and Frigates available during Astronomy?
ChrTh Sep 23, 2003, 02:07 PM Welcome aboard! I am considering moving up frigates and galleons, but I think I'll play around with it first. I'll also fiddle around with the sea square travel/trade.
ChrTh Sep 23, 2003, 02:47 PM Stretching the Age of Sail; this looks like the best way to do it:
Trade over Sea Squares allowed with Engineering
Trade over Ocean Squares allowed with Navigation
Navigation is a pre-requisite for Magnetism
Privateer available with Astronomy; Privateer is Civ-specific
Galleon available with Navigation
Frigate available with Magnetism
English will be one of the opponent Civs.
Galleys will never be able to traverse Sea Squares without risk of capsize unless Great Lighthouse is owned (because it's the Engineering function that makes the Caravel able to survive the sea, not the navigation technique).
Comments accepted.
T-hawk Sep 23, 2003, 09:01 PM Note that both "Trade over Sea/Ocean square" flags always enable safe traversal of that type of water terrain for all boats.

I thought that might be the case; thanks for the clarification
Darkness Sep 24, 2003, 03:04 AM So, what happened to CTR 5?

Not enough interest. Unless I get 6 players in a game, I refuse to start it; it's too hard to maintain a game with fewer than 6 I've found. I'd rather not start a game if it's not likely to finish.
ControlFreak Sep 24, 2003, 02:16 PM I am playing in an SG as Spain and hate them. I also hated the recent GOTM as Spain. I think your modifications would actually fix what I hated. Unfortunately, I can't join another SG so this is not a signup.
However, since you are dabbling with an Age of Sail concept I wanted to post a link to the Age of Sail SG. I'm actually surprized T-Hawk didn't post it himself since it was his game. The modded game was fun but Archipelago maps don't lend themselves well to SGs IMHO.

I think the stretching of the navy, plus the immediate existence of galleys will help make the Archipelago less stressful to work with. I am also thinking of keeping the Large map but making it Standard number of opponents--still toying with that.
The other reason I wanted to do Archipelago is to slow down Spain once we get Chivalry. On a Pangaea or Continents map with the Conquistadors, I can see Spain running roughshod over the rest of the continent by throwing waves of conquistadors all over the place. Forcing them to get on boats makes them a little less effective (and less unbalancing).
ChrTh Sep 25, 2003, 08:06 AM As my sig says, I'm out of pocket until Monday Afternoon. If you sign up for this game and don't get a response, don't take it personally ;)
Of course, we still need people to sign up! Come play Spain the way they were meant to be played!
Rubberjello Sep 27, 2003, 01:18 PM C'mon fellow S.G.'rs! I want to play this one! We need some other signups here!
Besides, think of ChrTh! He might get a feeling of rejection. He may quit Civ3 altogether, find gainfuly employment, marry, father 3 kids, get a mortgage and car payments, and be a responsible member of society! Now, you don't want THAT on your conscience, do you? :D

Well if it was Deity, not emperor I might consider.
At this point I won't play emperor games except a variant.
ChrTh Sep 29, 2003, 03:13 PM @Lee, Rubberjello, others:
Since the modded Spain is of benefit to the player, should we play this on Deity? Chime in!
Rubberjello Sep 29, 2003, 06:24 PM Diety is fine by me. If I can survive in ST3 without getting any :smoke: awards from Sirian than I can't be that bad a Diety player, errrr....right? :p
6thGenTexan Sep 30, 2003, 01:06 PM Since ST3 is over, I have room for another SG.

ChrTh Sep 30, 2003, 01:09 PM welcome aboard 6gntxn! Hopefully we'll get at least 2 more players to join in and then we can get started....
ChrTh Sep 30, 2003, 01:19 PM One mo' thang:
The map will be large, but it will be the standard number of opponents.
ChrTh Oct 06, 2003, 09:14 PM Sorry guys, it's been a week and not enough interest :(
