In two of my PBEM's I had to deal with a crash when I tried to see the 'active deals' screen during negotiations. I also COULDN'T DECLARE WAR on each other (game crash).
This occured after making a lux for lux deal with the other human. The lux deal didn't end, so the error also stayed in the game.
No-one I know has found a workaround :(

I've had this twice when playing against my brother. Now he doesn't want to play even again. :( Not until Conquests at least...

I have seen this too, but my understanding was that this happens when you have a one-sided per turn deal.
For example, I give Aggie Dyes for a lump sum, or I make peace and accept a lump sum in return. This makes a one-sided per turn deal, I was pretty sure it's these that go wrong.
Aggie, are you 100% that it was a lux-for-lux deal that started on the same turn? I've had plenty of them that don't go wrong.
To fix the crashes I've had I just go back to the last turn of the deal and go and cancel it in the diplo screen ('active deals').

@anarres, Killer and Stapel can confirm my findings. In fact, Killer and I decided to end our PBEM just because of this (the first one). In both cases we agreed upon lux for lux deals without any other part in it, like a peace agreement or lump sum.
Also: you can go back, but you are talking about 10 or 20 turns!! The thing is that you hardly use the 'active deals' screen and also don't declare war THAT often. So you may be playing with a bug for ages before you notice.
The one-sided deal error is another bug. That's the one in which you see that the other party declares war after which the game crashes. Those occur because one human has peace in the active deal while the other doesn't.

There is a work-around for this [dance] Not that it is pretty but still...
The way to get rid of the crash is by attacking the human player you have a lux-lux crash situation with. So no declaring war, that will still cause a crash. After this you can access the active trade screen again :)
I found even more strange things regarding this bug. In my game vs Stapel we had this lux-lux bug. After taking the last town of an AI civ, the game again crashed. This ALSO was solved by attacking Stapel :o I assume that this is all due to the same bug.
