Lefty Scaevola Oct 17, 2001, 06:42 PM #5; the Squeamish & the Poltroons, wait, maybe that is the Flemish and the Walloons, no, right the first time.
:D :p :D
TheDuckOfFlanders Oct 17, 2001, 07:00 PM #5; the Squeamish & the Poltroons, wait, maybe that is the Flemish and the Walloons, no, right the first time.
That's one for lefty ,by the way ,have you ever been in Poltronia? There are a lot of beautifull horny chicks screaming for group sex over there.Ah ,i could tell you so much about it...
Sodak Oct 17, 2001, 07:43 PM Well, you've confirmed the answers I knew (3, 4, 5, 9)! Here are my remaining guesses:
2) Guus Flater ;)
6) Congo
7) Vlaams, Walloons, and that oddity they speak in Luxembourg?
8) diamonds (should be  )
10) Romans, Franks, Spanish (Hapsburgs), Dutch, Germans, English...
11) ...most beautiful.
12) paintings?
TheDuckOfFlanders Oct 17, 2001, 08:33 PM 6) Congo
Because none of the big colonial powers wanted the other to have the Congo ,it was given to belgium. Soon after the Belgians discoverd it was full of natural recources and had more gold and diamonds their world economies could bare. The big colonial powers were stupied to not fight a war for this country. But we forgive them :king:
7) Vlaams, Walloons, and that oddity they speak in Luxembourg?
almost ,vlaams and Waloons is correct ,that odity is a known language and it's spoken in a small region of the country.
Tip: We "captured" that region from germany......... (serious hint)
it's called the Eastcantons.
8) diamonds (should be  )
Actually ,we even export more diamonds "illigaly" than we do in statistics, the profitmarges are hugh ,and antwerp is the worlds diamond center. In volume though we export more beer ,because beer is genneraly more consumed.
10) Romans, Franks, Spanish (Hapsburgs), Dutch, Germans, English...
1 of them is wrong ,one should be added.
11) ...most beautiful.
i wiched! You 've never been to Belgium? (How could you ,BELGIUM!!!)
12) paintings?
technicly ,we only traded our (for that time pretty master pieces) paintings with the Germans during wwII ,although it was a pretty louzy deal ,one master piece for a load of a smeiser rifle.
No it was something else.
This trade good gave us a strong economical relation with england through the middle ages, That produced the raw material in mass used for making this good. This trade good has been found trough large parts of the world in the middle ages. Some pieces of this good have be found in china.
question 6 and 8 has been answered correctly ,7 and 10 only partly.
Lefty Scaevola Oct 17, 2001, 09:18 PM 10. Delete English, add Austrians.
TheDuckOfFlanders Oct 17, 2001, 09:36 PM 10. Delete English, add Austrians.

Lefty scaevola 5 and 10 thus 2 correct
Sodak 6 and 8 thus 2 correct
unanswered are:1,7,11,12,13 and 14
Everybody can still win! (sounds of a good quizmaster)
Never though some foureign people knew so much about this puny country.
Knight-Dragon Oct 17, 2001, 10:49 PM 7) 2?
12) Wool?
"Because none of the big colonial powers wanted the other to have the Congo ,it was given to belgium. Soon after the Belgians discoverd it was full of natural recources and had more gold and diamonds their world economies could bare. The big colonial powers were stupied to not fight a war for this country. But we forgive them"
But didn't you know the Belgians instituted the most oppressive and rapacious colonial administration in Belgian Congo? The Belgian royalty systematically exploited and harnessed the natural resources of the country and enriched themselves immensely in the process. Congo was administrated like their own personal royal estate.
TheDuckOfFlanders Oct 17, 2001, 11:10 PM 7) 2?
nope ,but close
12) Wool?
Also close ,that was the recource England produced at mass for export with us in the middle ages.
But didn't you know the Belgians instituted the most oppressive and rapacious colonial administration in Belgian Congo? The Belgian royalty systematically exploited and harnessed the natural resources of the country and enriched themselves immensely in the process. Congo was administrated like their own personal royal estate.
If i know that? Man i can write essays about Belgium and Congo. We've gotten righ thanks to Congo ,and were still getting richer on their expense. Why do you think diamonds are Belgium's major export product? :)
Anyway ,if we wouldn rip them off,the jews would. The whole Antwerp diamond market (including blood diamonds) is practicly in Jewish hands.Nothing racist though,Only facts. After Belgium Israel is the biggest diamond seller.
But it's true ,Belgium did no good colonization job in Congo.
But most colonizers have done some attroceties though.
Knight-Dragon Oct 18, 2001, 12:29 AM 2) 3 since someone already mentioned 4.
12) Spun cloth?
Yeah I know all about imperialist powers, coming fr an ex-colonial territory.
TheDuckOfFlanders Oct 18, 2001, 12:49 AM The score (for now) :
Joespaniel: 2,3,4 and 9 thus 4 correct
Lefty scaevola 5 and 10 thus 2 correct
Sodak 6 and 8 thus 2 correct
Skm 7 and 12 thus 2 correct
We speak three langauges spoken in Belgium: Dutch,French and German.
Trough the middle ages Flandres was one of the econmicly richest regions in Europe.Cloth was our major trading good.
That's why we took England's side in the 100 years war.Flandres was dependent on the English wool for its economy.
Pieces of Flabdres cloth has been traded as far as China.
Still 4 questons left: unanswered are:1,11,13 and 14
Lefty Scaevola Oct 18, 2001, 08:30 AM Sidack should have ten, I was not paying for score, just fun and clean up.
Lefty Scaevola Oct 18, 2001, 08:34 AM Cleaning up on another one (I have read Ceaser's Gallic Commentaries, in Latin), The Belgae were the bravest of the Celtae, and the most fierce in battle.
Lefty Scaevola Oct 18, 2001, 08:44 AM I will clean up on # 1# & 14 today around noon if no one esle gets them.

7) oorspronkelijke talen: 3.
10) WHAT?! Celts, Romans, Goths, Germans, French, Spanish.

SAMSON & GERT RULE!!!! :P
Lefty Scaevola Oct 18, 2001, 10:56 AM Billy got Godfrey of Bouillon, that leaves me to clean up # 13. Bruges, originally Brugge (means bridge?), was named for a time Flanders, which later became the name of the larger land area.
TheDuckOfFlanders Oct 19, 2001, 06:38 AM Cleaning up on another one (I have read Ceaser's Gallic Commentaries, in Latin), The Belgae were the bravest of the Celtae, and the most fierce in battle.
correct ,although in present time the Belgium soldiers are not that brave anymore ,except when they are drunk.Considering that they are drunk almost always they maybe are brave.
10) WHAT?! Celts, Romans, Goths, Germans, French, Spanish.
Correct man.
13) Brugge :P
SAMSON & GERT RULE!!!! :P
En zwemmen beiden in de miljarden ;)
Billy got Godfrey of Bouillon, that leaves me to clean up # 13. Bruges, originally Brugge (means bridge?), was named for a time Flanders, which later became the name of the larger land area

Tottaly wrong...
Flanders was a bit bigger at that time.Limburg wasn't yet included but the North-east of France was.Practicly Flanders was then bigger than it is now.
Brugge was the ...... of the North (6 letters)
willemvanoranje Oct 19, 2001, 08:55 AM Imperialistisch?

Jeez, talk about literate! I learned about this from "Asterix in Belgium"!
Sodak Oct 19, 2001, 11:30 AM Brugge was the VENICE of the north.
(of... 't was the BRUGGE of the north.
Lefty Scaevola Oct 19, 2001, 11:40 AM Brugge was called Flanders (Vlaaderen) in the 7th century, this name was not appliled to the larger land area until the 8th or 9th century.
TheDuckOfFlanders Oct 19, 2001, 11:57 AM Brugge was called Flanders (Vlaaderen) in the 7th century, this name was not appliled to the larger land area until the 8th or 9th century.
No, Bruges was caled the Venice of the north as sodak pointed out nicely.
The score (for now):
Joespaniel: 2,3,4 and 9 thus 4 correct
Lefty scaevola 5,10 and 11 thus 3 correct
Sodak 6,8 and 13 thus 3 correct
Skm 7 and 12 thus 2 correct
Willemvanoranje 14 thus 1 correct
number 1 (:king:'s) is still left.Nobody?
willemvanoranje Oct 20, 2001, 12:57 AM You had 6 kings. Leopold I, II, II Albert I, II and Boudewijn I.
And I know Caesar's opinion as well from Asterix in Belgica. Later I read it in a translation of Caesar's book about the war in Gaul.
Knight-Dragon Oct 20, 2001, 06:26 AM I do wish you ppl would stop posting in another language other than English; like your Dutch (or German or whatever it is). I already know three languages in the world fairly well but Dutch is not one of them. If you want to have a private conversation, pls use PM.
TheDuckOfFlanders Oct 20, 2001, 08:33 AM You had 6 kings. Leopold I, II, II Albert I, II and Boudewijn I.
Last one correct! Everybody has won ,score's are just bullsheit anyway.

Or actually, Venice is the Amsterdam of the south. :P
Julien Nov 05, 2001, 06:51 AM Let me correct a few things in this thread :
10) How could you have different civilisation occupying Belgium ? There has been several nations or ethnic groups.
The Ethnies are the Celts, Germanic and Latin (Roman, French, Spanish) - and now Arabic .
The nations were respectively the Romans, Franks (Merovingian, Carolingian, Holy Roman Empire), Habsburg (be them Burgundese, Spanish or Austrian), France and The Netherlands.
14) Godfroid de Bouillon was Walloon, not Flemish, as Bouillon is really in the Southernmost part of Belgium, at the French border.
Now let me ask my Belgium quiz (see next thread "Belgium quiz 2" as you want to let this one die...:p )
