View Full Version : Game 6-2 - Persia - NOW Available to Play
cracker Oct 15, 2003, 02:16 AM The game 6-2 of the Sixth Season of Medal Play is now available to play.
This game plays on the Gotm21 Game packs without any additional modifications and is a standard game without substantive added features.

Kuningas Oct 15, 2003, 02:30 AM I'll go predator. I'm really seeking for lost. With 3200 tiles, 60% water, 9 rivals, demi-god level and victory target 100k cultural. This will be one of the hardest challenge I have met.
Gingerbread Man Oct 15, 2003, 05:04 AM Ahh, this time I wont stuff up the level I am on...
Wish me luck (On both the GOTM and my downloading the correct save)

I play Gotm-24 and so installed all the Gotm-24 stuff. Does this mean I can't play 6-2 without downgrade to Gotm-21 installation?

karmina Oct 15, 2003, 08:42 AM Q: Are the other victory conditions disabled? I never continue playing after meeting the first v.c., so I don't know if its possble to win by 100k culture or even to play on after eliminating all rivals.
cracker Oct 15, 2003, 09:14 AM As usual, the answer to this question depends on what program/version of teh software you are playing. It is next to impossible to ask or answer intelligently without having you first declare the software version and patch level that you have installed.

sorry!
Software: MacOs 10.2.7
Civ3: 1.29b2 (the patch from Brad)
I ask because I think Gotm-24 installed some stuff that didn't work with older Gotm?
Txurce Oct 15, 2003, 12:23 PM Delta House, game 6-2 works fine with your setup. So will all future games, both GOTm and Medal Play. The only area that sometimes requires adjustments is when you go back to play a much older GOTM.
Gleodhman Oct 15, 2003, 12:45 PM Is there a pregame strategy forum somewhere?
Justus II Oct 15, 2003, 12:49 PM Smegma: No, not for tournament games, this is just a "dive in" experience! (Although that doesn't mean no strategy! I am holding my own "strategy forum" with myself before starting!).

Yes, this is correct. For players in the Civ3v1.29 versions of the game, you will have to manually swap back and forth between the versions of the three key text files that make the game run smoothly. (pediaicons.tx diplomacy.txt civilopedia.txt)
Technically only the pediaicons.txt is critical patch to preventing crashes but all thre files can have slight differences.
The source of this problem is the programming solution that hard codes the game pointers to these three text files instead of having the pointers reside in an xxx.ini file or having them reside in the general game settings. Even PTW has a variant of this problem it just has been hacked around in other ways.
The text file swapping is easy, the difficulty is in storing the files that all have identical names. The PC versions of the autoinstallers save a back-up version of the text files in a folder called "before_Gotmxx" so that the previous versions of the text files that existed before the GOTM game pack install can always be retrieved.

As a Macintosh player, you don't have to do it manually. I wrote two AppleScripts (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=65400) doing the file shuffling for you.
AlanH Oct 15, 2003, 06:24 PM NOTICE
For Mac users who have used my GOTM 24 installer, you will need to swap out the pediaicons.txt file to play this game. Unfortunately I didn't appreciate that this file was incompatible with the previous one, so my installer just replaced it instead of stashing the old one away in "GOTM24 before".
To make some amends, here is the previous pediaicons.txt, as you will not find it on your system unless you kept the GOTM23 file set. The attached file is an uncompressed copy of the one that came with GOTM23, and I believe it should work OK for this game. Just swap it into the Text folder, saving the GOM24 one away somewhere else.

Cracker - I have a question.
I finished GOTM#24 around the 5th October and have been 'practicing' playing the Persians in the last couple of days, in the build-up for Game 6-2.
I aimed my strategy at getting the Immortals early on - which isn't difficult considering the research of Iron Working is available after Bronze Working.
However, I noticed that my Immortals never became available, despite having secured a source of Iron - and I was forced to practice with Swordsmen.
Yes, this is correct. For players in the Civ3v1.29 versions of the game, you will have to manually swap back and forth between the versions of the three key text files that make the game run smoothly. (pediaicons.tx diplomacy.txt civilopedia.txt)
I am capable of some glarringly obvious mistakes at times but is it possible that one or two of the original files will need to be reset to the defaults after GOTM#24, not just the three you mention above?
cracker Oct 15, 2003, 09:36 PM Deadloss, I have not even the remotest clue what you are talking about with the concepts of practice games as the Persians and swordsmen. Perhaps this would be a good subject for PM.
------------------------------------
On the other question, the GOTM games do not effect your origianl installation program except for the following files:
resources.pcx
resources_shadows.pcx
pediaicons.txt
diplomacy.txt (*)
civilopedia.txt (*)
The last two files marked with an asterisk (*) have been tested to still provide full functionality with default v1.29 games and in fact the civilopedia version from the gOTM gameswill give you increased access to strategy and game play tips while internal within any Civ3 game.
The pediaicons.txt files for Gotm24,25,26,and 27 will not not work with older GOTMs but can easily be swapped in an out as required.
The resources.pcx and resources_shadows.pcx files will support any game from Gotm21 and beyond. You have the choice of swapping out your resource files to get you the combination of smilie faces and/or bonus blips that best matches your play style.

OK Cracker, you sure made me chuckle there :) :crazyeye:  but in case you really weren't 'getting it,' I'll make it simple... :goodjob:
I own a computer.
It's a PC.
It's got a Windows-XP based operating system on it.
Occasionally, I switch it on.
More than occasionally, I play games on it.
Ninety-percent of the time, I play 'Civilization 3 - Play The World, version 1.21f.'
Are you with me so far, Cracker? ;)
OK, back to the story...
...I was bored after finishing GOTM#24 early and wanted some practice before the next game in the Series. I noticed Game 6-2 was as the Persians. I thought I would attempt to guess what your set-up might be and get used to some of the city names.
The Persians have Immortals as their special UU.
This unit is available after Iron Working and replaces the Swordman.
In my practice games I can no longer get the Immortals. I still get the Swordsman. I cannot get the special unit for the Persians.
Each time I have played, in different scenarios, I have secured iron to my capital (Parsegarde, isn't it?) but still only got the Swordsman unit - not Immortal units.
Either, I'm forgetting something - which is very possible (and most likely, usually) or there is a problem that needs rectifying before I play Game 6-2.
I think I roughly understand what these five files do.
resources.pcx - pics of new stuff like wool, et cetera
resources_shadows.pcx - pics but dunno what it does
pediaicons.txt - text file updates to the icons in the civilopedia (or F4 icons)?
diplomacy.txt (*) - text file that does, er...dunno but something to do with diplomacy, right?
civilopedia.txt (*) - text file updates to the civilopedia
The last two files marked with an asterisk (*) have been tested to still provide full functionality with default v1.29 games and in fact the civilopedia version from the gOTM gameswill give you increased access to strategy and game play tips while internal within any Civ3 game.
My concern is after playing GOTM#24, where the light greens were the Gogoryeo (I think). After all the special units that were adapted to play GOTM#24, will the Persians still be able to get Immortals?

Since you are playing in PTW, all of this specultaion does not apply to you and may just be creating confusion. I know that is not your intent. Are you with me so far, ... - cracker

You are indeed forgetting something. We don't know what it is yet for sure. None of this speculation has anything to do with Gotm24 and may be one of the classic "Is my underwear on backwards??" or "Does this make my butt look big??" questions that I elude to.
Are you ready to try and send me a PM yet so we can sort out the source of your confusion together or does this parlor game continue at this same exciting pace??? ;) - cracker
keiselhorn Oct 16, 2003, 02:42 AM In the game announcement for 6-2 on CFC's home page it says the Barbarians are set to restless and... "confused" ?!
What do you mean with "confused"?
Gleodhman Oct 16, 2003, 05:00 AM Is it possible to Submit a QSC for this game. I didn't see the tab available in the QSC submission area. (First time I've ever kept track as I'm realatively new to CFC.)

There isn't QSC submit nor pregame discussion thread for tournament games. (6-2,6-4)

Well, from my perspective the "barbarians" are always confused.
You could reverse that in in a tongue-and-cheek sort of way and arrive at a conclusion that anyone who ends up "confused" could be a barbarian. ;)
waylander Oct 16, 2003, 02:37 PM I am playing PTW v1.21. I have installed the GOTM 24 files. Will I still have to change the pediaicons.txt to play 6-2 or not. After reading this thread it is still not entireley clear to me.
cracker Oct 16, 2003, 06:03 PM Waylander,
The answer to these questions is different for Civ3v1.29 (not PTW) versus all the different patch versions of PTW.
In the PTW software version, the executable game program can be configured to search for critical files by looking in folders that can be specified generally in the /scenarios subfolder of the PTW installation.
The Gotm21 game pack for PTW installs a scenario folder that holds the key resource graphics files plus its own version of the text files like pediaicons.txt
The Gotm24 game pack for PTW intalls a scenario folder that holds the pediaicons.txt file for that Gotm24-Korea Game.
When you play Game 6-2 Persia, it will run on the Gotm21 Game pack and automagically references the game setup in the /scenarios/gotm21 folder. Game 6-2 will not even be conscious of the fact that you might have played Gotm24 becasue it is not setup to recognize any game features beyond the Gotm21 game pack.
This same logic is how we know that the Gotm game packs for PTW do not have an effect on any randomly generated practice games or other games outside of the Gotm Game files. Since those randomly generated games use your default pediaicons.txt files for PTW that have not been touched or contacted in any way, then it is safe to say that these issues have nothing to do with the Gotm game setups.
Let me know if you need more detail on the various file locations if this will help you feel more comfortable.

Cracker, I'm happy to report that my fears about not getting the Immortal units in Game 6-2, fortunately, came to nothing.
I still cannot, however, get Immortals outside of the GOTM framework for some reason. I can play a normal PTW game from scratch as the Persians and don't get them after Iron Working. However, I'll have to investigate that at a later date.
I'm far too busy, at the moment, cramming all the other things that go on in my life, into the next 8 days before the Mongol Invasion takes place (in a cloud of dust).
OneFastWarrior Oct 23, 2003, 05:46 PM I might have to try this, as my 1st ever victory as Persia was a 100K, long before I knew what I was doing.
test_specimen Oct 24, 2003, 10:55 AM Is the "medal play game" something different than GOTM? Are there different rules? I could not find anything about that on the GOTM page.

Perhaps this sticky thread titled "The Expanded Medal Play Series of GOTM " that was located just an inch further down on your screen might have provided you with the answers that you seek:
http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=57304
It even has pretty graphics and links you to a webpage.
