Lefty Scaevola Oct 22, 2001, 08:47 AM 4. the Streltzy were a body of royal household troops form by Ivan IV, equivilent of the Roman Praetorians, with an even more checkered a history of mutiny and coups. They eliminatd by Peter the Great after their last mutiny/coup attempt. SKM got most of the rest (if you count scattergun answers).

Really? Maybe so....I could've sworn that the CIS was formed earlier than that. Unless it was an "unofficial" arrangement, I thought that the former Soviet republics competed in the 1992 Summer and 1994 Winter Olympics as the CIS.
But I could be wrong. :)
joespaniel Oct 22, 2001, 05:42 PM Jumbo - You are smokin! But still not 100%...

But I could be wrong. :) It was a wild guess. I really don't know.
joespaniel Oct 22, 2001, 09:48 PM The answers to #2 and #3 have the same "last name".
Knight-Dragon Oct 22, 2001, 11:35 PM The Mongol Horde and the Golden Horde. But aren't they the same - Mongol-dominated Eurasian nomadic confederations?
But then maybe I am wrong ......
joespaniel Oct 23, 2001, 12:04 AM I was looking for 'peoples' names...
BTW - dont you ever sleep? ;)
Knight-Dragon Oct 23, 2001, 12:23 AM It's in the middle of the day over here and I'm at work. :D
Alright, then I think it's Genghis Khan and then Ogodei Khan?
joespaniel Oct 23, 2001, 08:50 AM Getting alot of work done?
You guys want the answers yet?
OOPS! Sorry, I have to go to work!:D
Knight-Dragon Oct 23, 2001, 09:14 AM It's a slow day. ;)
My last guess - Ogodei Khan and Mongke Khan?
Might as well give us the answers ......
Lefty Scaevola Oct 23, 2001, 09:36 AM As mentioned by SKM above
1237 was the Golden Horde of Tatars & Mongols under Batu (Batya).
1223 was an invasion, almost to Kiev, of a Mongol horde under Subedai (Subedeya) but most of this campaign by the mongols was against the Polovtsy, not the Russian pricipalites

AoA 's response got 1 thru 9 exactly right.
10 is the Russian invasion of Chechnia.
You all did well, so anyone is free to post any Russian history or ask the next question as far as Im concerned.
Knight-Dragon Oct 23, 2001, 07:57 PM <Insert evil laugh here> Hijacking the Russian quiz as a Chinese quiz ...... :p
Question : -
The Russians were the first modern European power to make a treaty with Imperial Qing (I think) in the 18th century. Name this treaty and its terms .....
joespaniel Oct 24, 2001, 08:15 PM I dont know.
Heres another question in addition to SKMs :
How many names has St. Petersburg had?
Knight-Dragon Oct 24, 2001, 09:27 PM Two. Petrograd and Leningrad.
Anyway you can forget about my question. Way too hard. It's the Treaty of Nerchinsk sometime in the middle of the 18th century. Terms were for the Russians to stay out of the Amur region in return for trading rights (tea, silk, porcelain etc). The Russians broke it later when they founded the Russian Maritime Province which covered a good part of the Amur plains.
joespaniel Oct 24, 2001, 09:39 PM Then answer would be THREE! Mwah-hah-hah! :D
But, youre right, tovarisch. Next question?
Knight-Dragon Oct 24, 2001, 09:51 PM Imperial Russia played the Great Game. Who did they play it with and what's the Game actually about?
BTW, what's tovarisch?
joespaniel Oct 24, 2001, 09:53 PM "Friend."
Great Britain, and the race to "colonize" Central Asia.
PS - I have that scenario...;)
Knight-Dragon Oct 24, 2001, 10:01 PM More specifically, it's played over the highlands of Inner Asia i.e. Afghanistan, Hindu Kush, the Pamirs etc. Game of spies.
OK, next question's yours. :crazyeyes Come on, bring it on! :p
joespaniel Oct 24, 2001, 10:40 PM Alright! Im gonna ask a question so hard even I dont know the answer! :D
What country's people were deported in whole to Siberia by Stalin, and allowed to return home by Kruschev?
Knight-Dragon Oct 24, 2001, 11:14 PM Stalin deported a lot of peoples to the Siberian wastes. I would say, the Crimean Tatars of Ukraine (?), for one.
Knight-Dragon Oct 25, 2001, 02:27 AM No wait, it's the Germans. There's a group of about 2.5 mil Volga Germans who were deported to Siberia during WW2 cos of the German invasion. These were descendants of a Gothic tribe which migrated to the area around the same time as other Germanic tribes migrating westwards into the Roman Empire.
Later allowed to "return" to Germany. But I think this was after the fall of the Soviet Union .......
Simon Darkshade Oct 25, 2001, 06:34 AM Was it the Chechens, by any chance?
joespaniel Oct 25, 2001, 08:02 AM :goodjob: Simon has the honors!
