View Full Version : Boats as defensive weapons

I wonder. Have you ever thought of using battleships to anchor in cities for defence, instead of riflemen or marines? Battleships have a 12 defence rate, which is higher than anything else (excepted carrier). I always have 2 battleships and at least 1 aegis cruiser ( for cruise missiles ) to defend my cities. Battleships are also useful for retaliation attacks. They have 6 moves, so 6 attacks. With 18 points in attack... OUCH!

Of course, if you build your city far from the sea (which is quite stupide http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/smile.gif) that's your problem! http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/smile.gif

I think your getting Civ 1 and Civ 2 mixed up. A Battleship in Civ 2 is 12-12 in Civ 1 it's 18-12. But in Civ 2 there is a rule that boats caught in a city have their hitpoints and firepower reduced to 1.

But never the less, I do, do that sometimes.

I usually station a battleship or cruiser in cities that are in harms way. But I still maintain a regular ground-based defense force. I use the war ships for counter-attack and costal defense purposes only.

Arghh! This would be a great mistake not just because firepower is reduced to 1 but also because battleships COST.

BUT: If a city is constantly being attacked by air units place an AEGIS Cruiser to defend it... Do it and then tell me about it!
This works espesially when u play with Stupid AIhttp://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/cwm33.gif as it keeps on sending its units on the same place!

When I only have 1 unit fortified in the city on the turn I take it over, I move all my ships in, I take them out after next turn. Battleships are pretty nifty for defense.

I don't tend to use ships solely for defense, but in a city with a strong industrial production ( and of course a port ) I tend to place one battleship for retaliatory strikes against any bummers stuck outside the city... http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/smile.gif

But then , wouldn't a VET battleship be much better protection . A vet AEGIS Cruiser behind SAM should be able to get rid of almost all air units .

This is not exact.
If the attacker is a land or air unit then boat has the firepower reduced to 1 and the attacker has the firepower doubled.
No reduction of hitpoints.

SlowThinker is right. And Battleships make poor city defenders in general, as a result.

In my first Civ II game, I was really hacked off because I lost several battleships in port. I had no real "understanding" of why, at the time, LOL!

BTW, Battleships (and all 2X firepower ships) also have their firepower reduced to 1X when they shell a land unit. On the other hand, Veteran Aegis cruisers do make good "mobile city SAAMs"...
