View Full Version : Milking... the conversation

Now that the moderator powers have had enough time to go to my head, it's time for some sort of community building OT thread... Note that the name of the thread isn't "Milking... the post count". ;)

I think it would be nice to have a little more interaction between players here on this forum. The seperate game threads have helped in that regard, so here's another stab at it. Feel free to share a bit about yourself, a joke (tasteful of course), or whatever. On-topic posts will not be tolerated!

--------------------

I'll start...

It's been quite a while since I was able to play a game of Civ. I've been living with relatives down in southern California for a few months now, with my gaming computer back in Utah. Will be going back this week, so maybe the drought is over.

Mixed feelings about it though. I certainly will miss the ocean. Been spending almost every second at the beach when the sun was out and a lot of the time when it wasn't. Swimming (well, I can float at least), soaking up sunshine, and just playing in the sand. Will miss it! (and lose my tan :( )

Nice castle Aeson! :D
SO, you'll be getting back to playing civ? Maybe even a HoF attempt?

And please don't ask me for tasteful jokes, 'cause I don't know any..... ;)

Hello, my name is Superslug, and I'm a milkaholic.

I work ten hour third shifts (which partly explains why you practically see me post round the clock) in Western North Carolina. In my nonCiv spare time, I compete in Magic The Gathering tournaments and operate a role playing Star Trek website.

My goals in life are to earn a Ph.D in Mathematics, accumulate a post count equal to the total of all the moderators combined and eventually have the top score on the top level.

@SupersluG: magic? I used to play that too. I've got at least 2 thousand cards lying around somewhere...

I rarely get the chance to play Civ anymore :( The irony is that apart from this, 2003 has been a good year for me, great new job that I love, new house, ut not enough time or civ.

Once I'm settled again in the new year hopefully i'm going to get back into it and give those Regent champs a run for their money :)

Some information about myself. My name is Roman Nastenko. I am 17 years old and now I become a student of Kiev Polytechnical Institute (KPI). I was playing Civilization about 6 years, from 1997 on Civ1 to 2003 on Civ3PTW. I like this game very mush because of many reasons. I don't want to explain them bow, because of mine REALY BAD English. Maybe later...

well, my RL name is Daryl and i live in northern kentucky-just a few miles south of cincinnati, ohio. cinci is the home of the bengals which is where is got my forum name at. a linebacker named Takeo Spikes used to play for the bengals and now plays for the buffalo bills. when Takeo was drafted by the bengals he explained about his name, in the paper. he said that it means 'great warrior' in japanese. ever since then, when i have needed a name in a computer game, i have used Takeo. i grew up in kansas and lived there my whole life until 10 years ago. i am still a chiefs fan at heart, so i will be rooting for them when they come to town this week to play the bengals. any football fans out there? the chiefs are 9-0!!:band:

i used to play civ2 off and on for several years, but was never into it as much as civ3. i found this site about a year ago and have been playing civ3 almost every day since then. i even have several games i have bought within the last year that i haven't even played yet.
well, i've been away from the game for a few minutes now...;)

@Takeo: Check the NFL thread in sports. You'll find me there too...

OK, something about myself (arguably the biggest spammer in the HoF forum, though superslug is giving me a good run for that title ;) )
My RL name is Marcel, and I'm from the Netherlands, where I'll be graduating from the University of Leiden in about six months or so, with a degree in Biopharmaceutics.
My hobbies are sport (check the sports forum, I'm spamming there too), mostly football (european style), Backetball and American football. I also enjoy reading fantasy books. I've got an aquarium, which is my main distraction while playing civ. (It's always funny to see a Siamese Fighter fish chase Rummy nose tetra's, who'll just split up and drive him to desperation by coming in from both sides).
I've played civ since 1994 or so, but really got into the game with civ3, which is my favourite by a mile.

Hard to say. I'll just list a few I like a lot.

- Robin Hobb (Farseer trilogy, Liveship Traders, Tawny man)
- George Martin (Song of Fire and Ice), but he'd better get that 4th book out soon, 'cause I'm running out of patience
- Raymond Feist, but only the books about Midkemia and the Tsurani
- Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time, but he's dragging it out a bit too long, IMHO.
- Dune, but I like the prequels by Herberts' son better than Herberts' own books.
Tad Williams (Otherworld, Memory Sorrow and Thorn)
-Most of what David Eddings wrote, though that's more for younger readers.
-Ian Irvine's books
-Jaqueline Carey (Kushiel's chosen, etc)
-Julian May

Overal I think my favourite is probably "Lord of Chaos", book 6 of the Wheel of Time, by Robert Jordan.

Me?! A spammer?!...oh wait, I really am a spammer...
So you're claiming the title for master HOF spammer, eh? You can have it. Personally, I use the HOF, GD and Strategy sections as a mellow vacation from the stress of my native environment: Off-Topic.

Anyway, did you prefer any MTG colors over others? Did you do tournaments or just casual? What sets were out when you played? I started with invasion, did lots of tourneys and always play red/black, sometimes splashing green.

By the way everyone, my real name is Chris. I'm also 28, single and strikingly handsome...well, to blindfolded people anyways.

Darkness
Nov 13, 2003, 08:45 AM
@superslug: No tournaments, only casual...
I usually played with blue and white (sometimes black/red and green for blue/green for multiplayer)
I started playing just before 4th edition came out and the Urza series were just out when I stopped, though I've got some cards from that series (slivers, etc...)

I'm glad to know that you aren't Dragon Revisitted stalking me.;) Anyway, here is the link (the Wheel of Time book forum is toward the bottom of the list):

http://www.ataricommunity.com/forums/index.php?

Also note that I used to have zillion post count there; however, that number has been decreasing constantly because the Administrator there has been deleting old threads. Instead of archiving old threads, they just go ahead and delete them whenever their server is running out of space.

PS: Well, you guys aren't really a spammer.;) I know a spammer when I see it because I was once a spammer who spammed over 5000 posts without drawing any attention from the Mods. I didn't even get a single warning from the mod there (at Infogrames) either, not even one. Now, Am I a grand master spammer or what? j/k That was then, this is now. I have changed.

wow! you have a large list of stuff that i'm not overly familiar with. i'll have to look into some of those authors. my favorite author is R.A. Salvatore and most fantasy books that i've read have something to do with forgotten realms or dungeon & dragons in general. have read Dune 3 or 4 times and read Tolkien. i'm just about drooling waiting for the 'Return of the King' movie to come out.

Moderator you may be, but not in this particular forum. Is an endorsement of spam really that wise?

Anyway, I have noticed a lot of mention of fantasy novels here. Am I the lone SF fan? My avatar obviously proves a love a Star Trek (provided one can recognize the picture as Star Trek), but my passion for the genre is mainly centered around it's literature. Asimov, Clarke, Bear, Niven...

Ahem, trekker. Trekkies memorize technical schematics, memorize the Klingon language and dress up for conventions. Trekker's appreciate the more character driven and intellectual explorations of the franchise, mainly because we can't afford costumes or tech manuals and our Klingon is rusty.

The kids may be a good thing then, because Enterprise is sure making me think the franchise is in a bad spot right now. Of course and 40 year old franchise is going to have low spots...Eh, less time watching TV is more time for HOF runs...

In real life zerksees (Andy) has many other responsibilities.

I am married and have two kids – the first started kindergarten this year, and the second preschool. I also have a house with 4 acres to look after.

I am a life-long drag-racing enthusiast. For those who care, my street driven ’76 Trans Am ran 12.81 @ 105.1 MPH in the ¼ mile last weekend. This is a new personal best, though my friend Dave is still a tenth faster. My Dad and brothers also race.

I am working on electrical wiring in my second garage, to be followed by insulation so I can work out there in the winter without freezing.

Then there are the honey-dos.

I am a systems analyst by day – and have internet access at work so I can post during lunch hour. (I have a bachelor degree in computer science from John Carroll University.)

All of this stuff limits zerksees’ civ playing time.

My friend John got me started on this game. In the past he also got me started on Axis and Allies (board game) and paintball. He and I always have epic battles in whatever games we play. He had quite a head start in Civ, having played for several years (Civ 2 and then Civ3) before me. In January I was impressed that he could sometimes win on monarch level! I made a goal to beat it on that level and catch up with him. Of course I got addicted, so I spend lots of free time playing the AI. This site has been priceless in my quest to improve my game play. I now expect to win on emperor and actually beat deity on my first try!

In our first PBEM game (with several other human players), it’s 1350 BC and I am ahead in all ways but territory. RCP and settler factory strategies are in effect right now – strategies I would have no idea about without civfanatics. Funny the game moves so slow that my strategies are drastically better than those I used when I started. No matter I have the patience to see this out. (Hope this is not too close to “on-topic” - LOL!)

I was wondering if any married civ-ers have a spouse that also plays the game? I sure don't - though she tolerates it very well.

I'm another sci-fi fan :)

I probably would have been a Magic fan if anyone near my age and/or that I worked with had also been interested

I like many of the books Darkness mentioned. My favorites include Asimov's Foundation series, Brunner's Stand On Zanzibar, Lord of the Rings, Daughter of the Empire (Raymond Feist and Janny Wurts), hmmm, too many to list actually, but I do enjoy just about anything by Asimov, Clarke, and earlier books by Heinlein.

And I'm a Star Trek fan, but mainly of TNG, the movies, and some of the original shows. The later shows have a different feel and don't do much for me. I miss Gene Roddenberry's direct influence - without him at the helm I don't think we'll see anything like TNG again :(

I'm going to show my age ;) by mentioning 2001 A Space Odyssey here - it still ranks as one of the best for me, including even its special effects. Amazing considering how long before Star Wars it was made. I was sad to see the really big screen theatres fade into the past mainly because of this movie

I do understand what people say when they miss Gene's direct influence on Star Trek. The Original Series was off the air several years before I was born, but I got hooked on it first in reruns. Next Gen was equally impressive. They've done good stuff since, but not quite the same.

Hmmm. That could be a very deep question. But yes other things have to happen to sustain us so we can play civilization. In no particular order:

Computers - The AI would not live without a computer. This requires an entire industry dedicated to designing and building this equipment.

Capitalism - so developers are motivated to write Civ I and all the newer versions of Civ. Also handy so no time is wasted growing your own food.

Electricity - so our computers can run Civ. Having a power grid is handy too so no time is wasted maintaining my own power supply. Running water and sewers also very helpful.

History - If so many great civilizations of the past and present never existed, what would the game be based on? I suppose there is something here about diversity that created these different civilizations.

Rocket Science - How else would there be a spaceship victory condition?

I am sure there are more...

superslug

I guess it's a matter of perspective. You see, for me, all those elements of the universe were entwined by the Creator into evolution merely so that Civilization would exist. Hence, I do not consider them separate, but part of the Great Plan.

You know, I think this is the first time I've ever seen a thread drift towards being on-topic. :rotfl:

I have been playing Civ 3 almost full time for two years... except when I cruise....
some would call it an obsession, but I think it is a calling..

Being retired let's me devote a lot of time to strive for a high score.. as I work up the social ladder... to Monarch..

Used to read the SF section at the library from A to Z but now like fantasy and historical fiction (same thing in a stretch)..

David Eddings is fantastic, Jordan used to be my favourite till he got bogged down in mindless detail rather than developing the plot.
Jack Whyte's series on Excalibur and Camelot is presently my top choice....

Ho ho, here I wake up this thread I didn't even know existed here to tell u just who I m:

My real name is Chaim Rimon, first son of my parents (who's parents barely survived the holocost from Poland having most of their families killed on both sides..).

Raised in Bat-Yam, Israel, a suburb of Tel-Aviv.
(All my life I'm in the Tel-Aviv area..)

I had my first computer when I was 7, and am now 27 (younger than chieftess by 17 days..).
I knew civ about the same time I knew cigarettes, drugs, sex, and the fun of having things burn.. at the age of 17.

18 - finished high school and entered the army.
19 - out of the army (mantal..), into part-time jobs, and into university.
20 - leave parents to live in a rented room (smartest thing ever!)
...
...
25 - after a hard time at the university and too much marijuana and tea, got my B.Sc in Math and Computers Science from Tel-Aviv University, not before I got the worst thing I've ever had to bear -
my own personal anxiety disorder for which I'm taking 2 seroxat pills to this day..

25-now - Working in a high-tech company (BMC.COM) in development (and now support) of security related products.
This is what pays me to live my civ hours.

I had one girlfriend when I was 20 for less than a year, and seem too wierd for most women.. hopefully someone will want me sometime, but I'm relaxed about it and don't EVER want kids.
I don't want them to wake to this "life" nightmare, and I won't be able to mentally be with them.. I'll probably suicide on first illness..

My cousin plays Civ (Schon), my mom plays civ (civ1, now civ2).
Even my sister sometimes plays civ, but she's not the charachter..

I'm the most harmless person I know, and I love many kinds of strategy games, but mainly civ and Warcraft3 (which is devine in other ways, but too realtime for me).

I plan on moving from Israel to work for a game-developing company, and strive to eventually find game-making related algorithms which will give me the money (even if not the fame) to move and LIVE QUIETLY somewhere (Edinbrough/Australia/Jamaica...) without worrying about money.

Currently I'm stoned (medium, not well-done..) in Ramat-Gan, waiting for Sid to send me moneyy to develop my brain..

PS: Liked StarTrek - the next generation, and don't really read much at all unless it's astronomy/phisics/computers books.

In conclusion, send money!!

Well i'm not one to turn down some good ol' spam :D

I'm 16, live in Scotland, and am about to sit my final exams at school. Although I will have a chance to sit more of the same standard next year.
I am the laziest person I know, will do pretty much anything to avoid doing work (kind of a contradiction :hmm:). I am also very stubborn, competetive, and generally quite suspicious about alot of (trivial) things. Saying this, unless I loathe someone (only 1 springs to mind, and is on this forum ;)), then I am never anything but nice to people. Friendly :) I am a morally driven person.
My main interests are Computer games and Football. I do like pretty much every other sport, but I don't play them nearly as often. I dislike science fiction, and any other futuristic/fantasy type thingies --- Lord of the Rings is an exception :) They just seem kinda silly to me.
Since this is the place to spam:
BTW, my photo is added in the pic thread! All invited!

You remind me of someone on Tv, but I can't remember who......and, Gainy bo, I've been in scotland a couple of days, and I think I want to retire in Edinbrough, when I'm old enough..
Really great place and view! 2 much rain and fog though..

If you are quite wealthy, Edinburgh would be a nice place to live. It's one of the 'better' Scottish cities, although there isn't really much to do there besides sight-seeing. It's a bit big for my liking also...
Regarding the weather, it is pretty bad in Scotland. Although because of this, you're at no risk from Mosquito's, snakes, dangers spiders etc :) You've also got no problem of staying cool ;)

Eman... I'm not sure if he is the 'B' (I can't remember their names..), but it is a small world!

I'm not really looking forward to buisness.. I want to design!
Design games mainly, and understanding each small nuance in strategy games.

Ask y? So I can redesign the world correctly this time, and die before seeing it ever accomplished.

But to do that, Eman, I can't sit on my lovely butt and play civ all day (O, the dream) - I have to work! I know my brain is being appreciated, but I want to play!!! and play!!! then design! (and play a bit :) )

So, if you are rich and want to invest.. I can live peacefully with 500000$ for the rest of my life.... or you may still PM me with a more interesting job... (just don't tell Scott Boulette).

Live 2 play!

"overly-beuracratic"............NO KIDDING..........I started a Financial Services business in London in 1984...........talk about Regulations.....Holy Moly!!............AND when people gamble and LOSE money in the stock market in England.........they think "someone/some company/Government" should reimburse them!!!........needless to say, our company has been in and out of the British Press for the last couple of years.
The U.S. on the other hand has a much more mature view to stock market "Gambling".............and even when a company the size of Enron (Fortune 500 #7!!) went belly up....the public that lost millions doesn't expect a "handout". Anyways, the red tape in the U.S. is much less than the U.K.....and if you work your butt off...........you WILL be successful.
AND boogaloo, Scott Boulette left the BMC picture over 20 years ago!......your desires & secrets are SAFE on the NON-HOF thread of the HOF!!! (Keep banging out those Fast Finishes!) ;)

Random question: Do you know Caitlin/Kirsten McGregor? I was friends with them when I was younger :) (they lived 2 houses away)

Another question: Eman, would I know any of your companies? I just think it'd be pretty cool to say i've spoken to the owner of *random company*
If so, could you share their names? ;)

Since you're a pretty knowledgeable Civ-Kid GB, I've got a Scottish trivia question for you:

Probably Burgh-ness, or the burgh of ness. The English spell Burgh with an 'O', hence Bo :)
Note, a Burgh is like a state, but kinda on a smaller scale.
And if you want to know how it's pronounced, it is like the ending of Edinburgh :) -- Which is not said in the same way as Pittsburgh. It is pronounced "Bur - uh"

Giany bo sorry i don't know Kristen McGregor.

Eman I was wondering if you could tell me some detailks about your companies. You say doing buisness in the U.K. is a pain in the ass, maybe this is becuase americans are more liberal and flexible in buisness. For example, in America you can hire a person on Monday and fire him on Tuesday. In the U.K. and in most of Europe, you would have to pay him 6 months of salary and find him a job before you can fire him. Maybe this concept of "working rights" is what's making Europe's economy grow so slowly and American's economy boom.

You remind me of someone on Tv, but I can't remember who...

The Ph.D. will likely be the easier of the two.

During my college years, I was shooting for a Ph.D in Math as well. After I graduated with a dual degree in CompSci and Math, I went on for a master in CompSci, but was kind of giving up on Math for good. These days, I usually have a headache whenever someone throwing numbers at me.:( However, I still dream of going back to school some day to get a Ph.D. in CompSci and may be for another shot in Math.

I really don't see any benefit in getting a MA or Ph.D in Math. Sure, if you are really good, you can publish a book, teach, or work for the government at a top secret location. IMO, Math is like Art! You do it because it's in your blood, but your arts usually won't be appreciated until after you die. The same with Math, people may remember you long after you die, but no one really care for you while you are still alive.

I agree that a lot of people who do math at this level have a passion. I fail to see how being a prof for example is not a benefit, specially if you love math and love teaching?

Ozymandius
Jun 11, 2005, 09:07 AM
Nothing beats working at something that you love to do...the tough thing in life seems to be the passing of that passion to others. When in highschool I loved math because it was the easiest of my subjects. However unless you want to do math for math's sake it has almost no application in life. Most people have problem's with arithmetic, multiplication etc. If they can't do their tables out of grade school, they're toast. Simple test.. ask several people what is 10% of a number... if they can't instantly reply... no future in math related stuff because their brain isn't wired for math thinking. The only useful application I ever found was to detrmine how "square" my foundation was when I built my house.
Now if you want to be an engineer..... it is important. I started resenting math-importance attitudes when computers in school were only for the use of math courses.. not to be wasted on applications in social sciences, trends, mapping, earth resources & stuff.... but that is my rant.

I'm quite interested in maths (I'm a national champion, after all), though not old enough to have a degree. I believe it has something to do with doing the same thing for the whole day and even more. I don't have a milking game, but one will probably come soon.

Pentium and Darkness,

Thanks. It needs a lot of TLC so that is where my time will be going. Many systems off line and parts missing, but I drove it home (in the pic it is still on the estate where I bought it). Whenever I get around to posting details about it on a Corvette forum, I'll put up a link here.

Civ fanatics forums...
I smiled but he didn't notice, and I didn't say anything.I did think for a moment 'is this me?' but your reference to 'fall' leads me to believe that you are based in a different part of the world! I agree with Pentium, I'd ask the person what their username is as the curiosity would be killing me!

I think I am temporarily cured of Civ. I bought this on June 11 at an estate sale. I have played civ for about two hours since, and it was quite an effort. (Prior I was playing 2 hours a night or more.)

I'll probably finish my current HOF attempt and that will be it for a while.

I'm in the same boat except that my Corvette was just built on 18 May and I picked it up at the National Corevette Museum on 9 June. I came home with the Bowling Green Corvette Club who are on a 2 week trip to California. 12 to 14 Corvettes going dowm I-40 to California drew a lot of attention. They don't get home until 25 June so they are still on the road.

Based on the VIN, mine was most likely made on the second work day of January, 1975. Mine is going to require a lot of TLC to be reliably roadworthy, but I got a great deal and mechanics are my hobby. The night I brought it home I had to stop to get gas (less than 5 minutes from where I picked it up), and some kid at the gas station says "hey - nice car!". This surprised me. A single Corvette draws attention - I can imagine what a dozen would draw.

The NCM has the build sheets for all the cars built in Bowling Green but they didn't start building there until 1981. You should go down there and visit, a lot of Corvette clubs go there as a group and on 10 June I was leaving Mammoth Cave National Park when I passed about 12 of them entering. That was a lot of happy waving. It brought back memories of my very first car (a 1962 Corvette) when you waved at every Corvette you saw because back in the 1960s there weren't that many Corvettes on the road.

Maybe there is a coralation between the people who like math and their ability to endure Milking a game. I have never enjoyed math and I have no stomach for Milking...MS, SS and LT all into the math thing Super milkers, coincidence???
Nevah. Maths was easily my favourite subject at school, and my best efforts on the HOF were fastest finish :p - I haven't even considered milking, don't have the patience...

Well, playing Civ at all requires a lot of patience. Fast Dom/Conq also need lots of planning, focusing on details and MM-ing.

At 62, what's more to worry about than children and grandchildren?..

Since I'm retired I just have a lot more quality time to milk a game...I even have a better perspective of what is important or not..

Thanks for the birthday wishes everyone.

Now that it's been a few days, I've been able to recenter myself on my true philosophy, that you're only as old as you feel. Grandparents playing with their grandkids in the afternoon are in some ways younger than the middle generation of parents busting their butts and stressing at work all day!

I like your perspective. If I'm lucky I'll be retiring by your current age 25 years from now.

I wonder if I'll still be able to play Civ III on any PC OS by then, or will it be "repackaged" with a bunch of other games to run on the latest technology.

If I were retired I could work on my Corvette and play Civ - right now I can't seem to find the time to do both.

Probably not on the OS of the time, but I would guess yes, you could play it easily and cheaply. Taking the current IT climate, depending on where you are in the world, it will cost $20 - $50 for a legacy PC that runs DOS 6.2, and therefore plays all those games from the late 80's early 90's.

I imagine the situatuation in 2030 will be no differant, save a radical alteration in the electiricity supply.

Good thread :)

My name is Peter. People call me Pete, Pan, Hippy, Stefan, Rog or in one long misunderstanding, Steve.

I am 31 (although I can still get away with 21 (this is important to me!))

I have a degree in Physics (with Electronics and Computing) although I am employed as a worthless lackey. *sigh*

My fave authors include Larry Niven, Terry Pratchett and Tolkien.

I am a major fan of British Sci Fi and comedy, especially Red Dwarf, hitch-hikers, Blackadder etc...

Babylon 5 beats Star Trek any day (wow that could start a fight.)

B5 trumped by Star Wars. (the new ones suck.)

Guns n' f****n' Roses: the Best Band In The World Ever! Also, Placebo, Sleeper, Radiohead, The Beatles, Marillion... and a couple hundred others.

The 1812 Overture makes me cry (that bit at the end with the bells...)

Hobbies include this (http://www.curiouspastimes.co.uk/), various varieties of Warhammer (tabletop wargaming - hello Eldar :) ) and sports (I currently run most days, play football and badminton once a week, used to row for my university...) Oh, and a certain computer game you may be familiar with.

If anyone wants a picture, they can have me a)being a troll :crazyeye: , or b)dressed in rowing lycras (no i'm not as big as Matt Pinsent :p )
