I bought Conquests and nothing happens, it can not be installed. Both Civ III and Play the World were installed without a hitch and work just fine. This new game does not like me. To the best of my knowledge I meet the system requirements and have tons of free space on my hard drive.

I've already returned one copy to the store and the second copy doesn't work either. I get no error message, I get nothing. I have no clues as to what the problem is. I have a Systemax computer with Windows XP. I've been reading these threads hoping to find some clues. I'm not that tech savvy.

When you try to install Conquests, what does the installer do? Does it begin to copy files, or does it just drop to the desktop?

It doesn't seem to read the disc at all, you know the little disc icon that pops up when you put in a CD it shows like it's about to do something but nothing happens. I don't get any kind of message. I did a Windows update last night hoping somehow everything would be magically fixed, nothing was magically fixed.

The problem may be in an inconsistenntcy with your cdrom drive. Some cdrom drives don't read certain disks. Best bet is to take the Conquests CD and try it in a different computer, if it works, it's the cdrom or its settings of your computer. In that case you'll probably want to contact whomever made the computer or sold you the cdrom drive.

are you trying to install it from a cdrw? a rewritable drive? this disc uses safedisc from macrovision .. so cd rewriters may not work .. call atari support they may have a patch or a solution for those using such drives

You could try installing it without the autorun by browsing through to the cd drive and running the setup.exe

I tried running the setup.exe, Atari support wrote back suggesting I run MSCONFIG and unselect "load group items" in startup, I don't know what that means and it didn't work. I do have a CD-RW drive, maybe that's the hitch.

Try copying the entire contents of the disk to a temp folder on your desktop and then see if you can install it from there.

Atari support wrote saying it was nothing to do with safedisc, and suggested I cut in paste it to the desk top, that didn't work, but at least it said something "I/O Device Error". This sounds bad.
I believe I'm supposed to contact the manufacturer of my computer, which sounds like a brush off to me.

I've spent a lot of time trying to get this game to work. I don't care anymore. I'm never buying any PC game ever again. I'll just get a Playstation for Christmas, I'm sure the games don't match the sophistication of Civ, but at least I'll know the games work.

I have the same problem, my cd drive only reads the disc on occassion. The game is installed, it's just that the CD drive does not detect any disc.

I have a CD RW drive, could that be the reason?

it has to be the reason ... the suggestion from atari about "msconfig" is gobbledydook.. its hogwash

safedisc (depends which version)is known to sometimes to disable cd writers .. its a little complicated .. but i know infogrames(the name of the company be4 they changed it to atari)has a patch somewhere for cd writers drives its just not a url they freely give out .. but over a year ago they gave it to me because on my old computer i ONLY had a cdrw drive and no other drive i will hunt it down for you just give me some time
