Hi all!

Im a linux geek, and being one comes at a cost- many of the "normal" applicaitons people use under M$ Windows dont seem to work. So for the last year I've had a small partition on my laptop dedicated to one thing- windows and civilization.

A few months or so back, I realized that I could try to get Civ3 to work under wine, a Windows Emulator ( http://www.winehq.org/ (http://www.winehq.org) ), and thus avoid windows altogether.

It worked fine :)

However, its quite slow. Not so absurdly slow that its no fun playing, but slow enough to irritate me at times.

My question to this forum is if others have had similar experiences with wine/civ3, and if so, what did you guys do to speed wine/civ3 up?

hmm. I suppose I could try upgrading to a newer version of Wine... or switching to Winex (if I must).

any tips?

oh and btw: my system specs:
Laptop: IBM T23
OS: Gentoo Linux, kernel 2.4.20
Processor 1200MHz Pentium III
RAM: 1024GB
Graphics Card: SuperSavage IX/C SDR (rev 05)
Sound Card: Intel Corp. 82801CA/CAM AC'97 Audio (rev 01)
Wine version: Wine 20030709

I haven't got any tips for you, but I would like to hear how it goes. :)

The only real reason I still have a Windows partition is to play Civ. If it works well enough under WINE, I may be able to quit Windows altogether! :D

I just tested Conquests on Linux with the latest Winex CVS...it runs! I just posted my results in the Conquests forum. Still slow though. I'm hoping the new 2.6 kernel will help with some of the speed issues.
