I have been trying to find out when the first time that two aircraft officially engaged each other in aerial combat. I have heard an unsubstantiated story that a British and a German plane started it when during a reconnaissance mission one pilot threw a rock at the other, and the next day the other pilot brought a hand gun. Is that true or just a clever story, please provide a source, thanks.

Spain was the first country to use planes as bombards. The first bombardement was in the Spanish-Morroco war of 1913.

Also in 1913: "The first aerial combat is said to have taken place in Mexico by 2 American flyers employed by the two opposing parties of the Mexican Revolution. Late in 1913, Dean Lamb and Phil Rader exchanged pistol shots without results. "

In 1914 the first plane-ship figth of history took place in Mexico, in the Mexico civil war, when a contitutionalist plane attacked the rebel ship "Herrero". Also in 1914, the french Frantz and Quenault shot down a (german) plane for first time in history.

edit: lieutenant giolio gavotti droped 4 bombs on turkish positions on november 1, 1911

i liked the Brittish-German more, it's damn funny. I can imagine them throwing rocks at each other & calling names. "Take that you bloody wienersnitzel!" (throws a rock) "Bah, go back to England, you bloody beanes lover" (throws a rock)...
