View Full Version : DG4 Discussion: Joan vs Cleo
Stuck_as_a_Mac Dec 14, 2003, 06:12 PM The poll on Civ Traits (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=71563) has closed. The top three choices for civ traits were Industrial (20 votes), Religious (16 votes) and Commerical (14 votes). This can be interpreted as we desire one of our traits to be Industrius, but we are unsure of the second trait. There are only two civilizations in Vanilla (as chosen by a poll at the end of DG3 and THIS (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=71566) poll) that follow this, and these civs are the French and the Egyptians.
The French
http://www.civfanatics.com/civ3/cia/leaders/JO_SHAP.jpg
The French are Industrial and Commercial. They are lead by Joan d'Arc and they begin with the technologies of Alphabet and Masonry and have the Musketeer as their Unique Unit. The Musketeer replaces the Musketman and has one Offense Point more (3/4/1). Their favorite government is Republic and they shun the Monarchy. Their color is PINK. For more information on The French, click here (http://www.civfanatics.com/civ3/cia/french.shtml)
The Egyptians
http://www.civfanatics.com/civ3/cia/leaders/CL_SHAP.jpg
The Egyptians are Industrial and Religious. They are lead by Cleopatra and they begin with the technologies of Ceremonial Burial and Masonry and have the War Chariot as their Unique Unit. The War Chariot replaces the Standard Chariot and has one Offense Point more (2/1/2). Their favorite government is Despotism and they shun the Republic. Their color is YELLOW. For more information on The French, click here (http://www.civfanatics.com/civ3/cia/egyptians.shtml)
With this information, discuss which one we should use. There will be a poll following this, most likely made by DZ. My thanks to DZ for letting me do this thread.
Vander Dec 14, 2003, 06:43 PM I say Egypt. We haven't played religious yet, they have an awesome UU (unlike the Frenchies) and I hate pink.
Inter4 Dec 14, 2003, 07:08 PM Egypt.
Hate pink. The egyptian UU is much better than the french one although the french one can give us a GA in the perfect time of the game..
Stuck_as_a_Mac Dec 14, 2003, 07:46 PM I have been a vocal supporter of the French since the begining. They are a powerful civ in their own right. They are able to build things quickly as well as make a good deal of GPT. An extra shield and gold on every tile is very helpful. Regardless of pink, Vive Le Republique. Go France.
(BTW- Uts [ color = deeppink ] to get the color of France
BTW- Being France allows us soooo much RPGing, like things we have now with the "Taunting You Some More"
Donovan Zoi Dec 14, 2003, 08:00 PM Not a big fan of pink myself(although I think France's color leans toward purple), but Industrious and Commercial is the type of civ I want and with Vanilla Civ, that only means France.
Are we really that shallow that we cannot get past the color "pink?" Deciding against choosing France for this reason defies logic. I do like Inter's comment that France's UU will provide a timely Golden Age. To me that is more important than a fleeting UU with an early GA risk.
Vote France!!
Strider Dec 14, 2003, 08:12 PM I'll have to go for France. I pratically hate the relegious trait, it only helps you about 6 turns max out of a possible 200 turn game. Not much of a bonus to me. Sure there UU is not all to good, but the traits make up for it.
Also, if we have culturally-linked starting poistions on (do we?) we start off by England/Germany, both good civs, but they don't have early UU's. Meanwhile the Egyptians start off by Babylonians(an early UU and the powerhouse culture civ) and the persians (perhaps the best UU and traits in vanilla civ3).
Aramazd Dec 14, 2003, 09:33 PM EYGPT!!
CivGeneral Dec 14, 2003, 09:49 PM I would also have to go with the French
deshelbr Dec 14, 2003, 10:32 PM I think we will get a much more interesting game out of France, even though I don't really like playing them.
If we go with Egypt we will be forced to dominate the game early on and the rest of our time will be spent on the defensive trying to ride out the later stages of the game.
With France we will be forced to work creatively to compete through the early stages of the game and then we can come back from behind towards the end.
I'm urging for the unconditional-surrendering French.
Sarevok Dec 14, 2003, 11:12 PM Id have to go with the french in this one.
Rik Meleet Dec 15, 2003, 03:25 AM Go with the French. Commercial is far more fun than the Religious trait. Pink isn't appealing to everyone; but at least we won't face them as enemies.
Eklektikos Dec 15, 2003, 06:04 AM I quite like pink, actually http://www.counterglow.com/forum/images/smilies/nervous.gif
So er... yes. The French.
ravensfire Dec 15, 2003, 10:32 AM "Why do you think we have this outrageous accent!"
Just think of the possibilities - heck, read through the French Musketeer succession game! Glorious! :hammer:
-- Ravensfire
ps - Civ choice = French
amirsan Dec 15, 2003, 03:01 PM looks like we need another poll. anyways, I vote France! I hate religous...
EDIT: And they also provide a great first tech to research, Mathematics. If we can get that first that means many trade oppertunities.
donsig Dec 15, 2003, 03:50 PM I think we should consider the timing of our golden age. If we play Egypt then we might want to seriously consider not using war chariots to invoke the GA but to do so through wonder building. Other than that it's a tough choice to make between Cleo and Joan.

Invoking an early GA is not all that of a bad thing, defiantly with an Industrial Nation. Generally, we can build a quick road net-work to get the most commercial wise from the Golden Age. Also, as we would be in way the extra shield or two production could generally help the war effort, as most units during that time is 40 shields max, one or two extra shields can make a good 2-3 turn differance in completion.
Although, I would still prefer France.
Stuck_as_a_Mac Dec 15, 2003, 04:21 PM I plan on letting this conversation run for another 24 hours, unless DZ wants it shorter. After that I'll poll it.
Think Pink
I cannot believe I just said that...

Furiey Dec 15, 2003, 04:41 PM So we have Joan v Cleo…
Lower corruption/more commerce v cheaper religious improvements
Musketeer v War Chariot
Pink v Yellow
I like the idea of the timing for the Golden Age – I hadn’t thought of that one (they always catch me by surprise!)
I’ve played Cleo many times – Egypt was the first industrious Civ I ever played, but I think all in all Joan will give us a better demogame, the reduced corruption giving more opportunities for Mayors to run productive cities.
If you haven’t read through the French Musketeer succession game that Ravensfire mentioned – do so – I did and it’s worth it! And don’t forget - all those taunts! (staying away from subjects that would bring down the wrath of the Moderators of course). I’m sure we can put up with the pink for that, after all it’s only a pastel shade of red.
And if you can’t think pink think magenta!
Strider Dec 15, 2003, 04:51 PM We could always do (alittle) editing and change it to a differant color, but I'd be against that.
Stuck_as_a_Mac Dec 15, 2003, 04:54 PM I dunno. If (when!) we vote Joan, perhaps we should put having a mod for the color of her borders up as well as possibly a different leaderhead.
conehead234 Dec 15, 2003, 05:12 PM I think we should do France.
Cyc Dec 15, 2003, 06:05 PM I usually do better with France than with Egypt. I wanted the Iroquois anyway. So let's do Joan (collectively!) Anyone remember Planet P?
"There's a pink world comin' down...
In a quiet little village by the sea
I hear the calling and it's calling for you and me
so leave your riches and your houses on the hills
cancel all your credit cards and settle up your bills
'cause there's a pink world comin' down
and it rolls like an avalanche
and it will carry us away..."
amirsan Dec 15, 2003, 06:09 PM whats the big deal with a color? its just a color for goodness sake!
CivGeneral Dec 15, 2003, 07:36 PM Exactly Amirsan, its not like the color is feminine or something ;).

Hey, I would think most of us should already be secure with our sexuality, so if it is a feminine color it shouldn't matter.
Vander Dec 15, 2003, 09:17 PM As King of the Knights of the Round Table, I am against being the French. I speak for all of us when I say that the French would suck for us. That this is about the last civ I thought we'd be when the group was created. It sort of defeats the purpose of having a King Arthur thing going (sacking the frenchies and all). So, I hate you all ;).

But think of the opportunities! Imagine - we would have a resistance movement! In our own country!

The game isn't centered around one citizens group, actually the game should have been created before any groups were aloud to be made to begin with.
Plexus Dec 16, 2003, 12:06 AM How about Japan?
Come on, Japan.
Think maroon/green.
Stuck_as_a_Mac Dec 16, 2003, 05:11 AM Already polled civ traits, Plex. Ind was the winner with Com/Rel in competition for second. These are the ones for those traits.
Falcon02 Dec 16, 2003, 09:38 AM You must awnser 3 questions, if you awnser incorrectly you shall be thrown into the pit of Peril
What is your Name?
- Sire Falcon of Nestwood
What is your Quest?
- So seek the holy Grail
What is your Favorite color?
- Pink... no, YELLOOOOOOOOooooo........
moral of the story, don't change your mind to yellow when facing the pit of peril... :D
Anyway, I think France should be good ain't nothing wrong with pink. A Pink Mac truck has just as much momentum as a Yellow one.... and thus punches just as much punch. One could also Aruge Pink paint likely has more pigment in it thus making the Pink mac truck slightly more massive, and giving it a slightly greater punch... ;)
TerminalMan90 Dec 16, 2003, 10:43 AM I don't have any problems with pink. Come on kids, it's just a colour on the map.
I have more trouble with the French culture I am going to have to dream up when I write for the CHD. My french isn't too good. I DO think there is a lot of scope for the CHD, though.
There there is also the fact that I was a mayor of an egyptian city last demogame. I'd feel at home :) I guess I am sitting pretty; either choice will be great for the demo game.
As pointed out in previous posts, the GA angle is also important. Is it true that the Egyptian UU can't go through jungle and mountains? I think the E-UU will go unused to avoid the GA and be of limited usefulness.
Think pink. Go France. Hello Joan.
Padma Dec 16, 2003, 11:44 AM IMO, the French UU and thus the (possible) timing of our Golden Age can only mean: I choose France!
(I'm not concerned with Pink. I'm more concerned with not having to look at Joan on the FA screen. :Bleah: ;) )
