View Full Version : How can that happen?
Olivença Dec 15, 2003, 09:03 AM Playing an epic game i gave a city (Pampoluna) to Ottomans to just keep them alive so i can trade with them.
Pampoluna is enclaved in my territory so its supposed to be pro tected from the Hittites who are on the brink of annihilating my Ottomans friends.
Next turn to my dismay Pampoluna is now Hittite with a modern armory unit in the city. How did they get there?
Masquerouge Dec 15, 2003, 09:11 AM I'd guess the Ottomans gave the Hittite this city in a peace treaty !

I would agree with this answer except for the Modern armor.
1) cities that I have gotten in peace treaties typically don't have units in them until I put one there.
2) Culture flipped cities get infantry as their defender. It shouldn't have cultrue flipped anyway surrounded by Olivença's Civ.
3) If the modern armor came from the Hitties, Olivença should have seen it cross the border on the way to Pampoluna. Unless he has show AI moves disabled.
If my reasoning is faulty on this please tell me.
BomberEscort Dec 15, 2003, 09:41 AM You've checked the obvious I presume... For example:
You don't have a ROP with the Hittites
The city in question is farther than 3 tiles from the front
Olivença Dec 15, 2003, 09:42 AM The Hittites are still at war with Ottomans they never made peace with them...
BomberEscort Dec 15, 2003, 09:43 AM But do you have an ROP with the Hittites (you are someone other than the Ottomans or Hittites right?)
lhc1971 Dec 15, 2003, 09:48 AM Hittites may have initiated propoganda and took the city, and maybe the MA is a conscript? Or maybe it flipped too Hittite because of it being relatively a new city with low culture, and still the MA is a conscript? How far apart is the border of the city you gave the Ottomans and Hittite border? How long have the Ottomans had the city you gave them?

Olivença Dec 15, 2003, 10:37 AM My civ is Port... i am in peace with the Hittites and Pampuluna was connected with only Port , what ROP means?
BomberEscort Dec 15, 2003, 10:42 AM ROP = Right of Passage
Olivença Dec 15, 2003, 10:45 AM The MA is a Vet!! Pampeluna is far from Hittites Empire!!
Olivença Dec 15, 2003, 10:47 AM and no ROP with Hittites!
anarres Dec 15, 2003, 10:51 AM You should post a save from the turn before then, so someone can have a look and see what happens...

I would suspect that the answer lies in the way turns are structured. The upkeap phase occurs for all players before any player's actions phases. So what may have happened is that you gave the city to the Ottomans. The Ottomans taking their turn after you proceeded to give the city to the Hitties. The Hitties on their turn proceeded to rush build a modern armor in said city.
Now the following turn begins with upkeap for all players. So before the "action phase" of your turn begins the MA in that city is built (as well as any other AI unit and all AI research). Hence when you are able to move around the map, giving new orders to your units you find a MA in this city.
Capt Buttkick Dec 16, 2003, 02:39 AM Yes. but that wouldn't solve how Hittites and Ottos are still at war...
Masquerouge Dec 16, 2003, 02:51 AM Is there a barrack in Pampeluna ? Can you see the sword icon ? That would explain the Veteran Modern Armor. In short,
1. Ottos give city to Hittites in a peacedeal
2. Hittites rushbuild a Modern Armor (ouch !) and it's a vet because there's a barrack in that city
3. Hittites declare war again at Ottos, causing huge rep hit but hey...
That's the most sensible solution I can find given the data we have :)
I think that given the order of actions between the AI and the player, all of this is possible in just 1 turn...

This can happen (and has happened to me very often) because of a mutual protection pact, that you have to declare war in the same turn than you made peace.
Masquerouge Dec 17, 2003, 03:41 AM Oooh yes good one Socralynnek !
Do the Hittites have a MPP with anyone also at war with the Ottomans ?
BomberEscort Dec 17, 2003, 04:29 AM Yes, but the gifted city is deep within his territory and he does not have an ROP with the Hittites. There is no way a 3 move MA could get to the city in one turn...
