View Full Version : My first game of Civ 3.
CornMaster Oct 30, 2001, 05:15 PM I bought it today. :D
So....I installed it and loaded it up. Then it went back to the desktop. I said "WTF!!! Crashed already", but then it continued. ;)
Kind of disappointed that there are no secnarios....but I don't play them often. Anyway....on to the game.
I started as Russia......I mean CornEmpire. On a standard world with 6 other civs. Planted my city. Oh my God the gold!!! The was gold everywhere!!!
Luckly the terrian and movement/order keys are almost identical, so I was able to explorer pretty easily. So I built a spearman for defence of CornEmpire Capital, then I built another worker. The first one was busy building a road over the mountians to the Gold. So my city was size 2. My border expanded because of my great culture. Then I built a warrior. Suddenly I'm almost out of money. WTF!!! Oh yeah.....units require gold instead of trade for support.
Now while this is going on my scout is exploring like mad. And I find more interisting resources like Gems, Spice, Cattle. I also see these mushroom like things growing on the side of the mountians...weird. So my warrior start exploring and I run into the mushrooms. "The Gahindi teach you writing" WTF!!! Those are huts! I wish I knew that!! So then my scout went to a few huts and I got a settler and a few advances.
So I built a city....but by this time I was down to 5 gold!!! My spearmen and warrior were draining all my money!! But my second city fixed that problem.
So my workers are building roads all over the place, and I'm still exploring...haven't met the AI yet.
Things that I haven't got working...and other gripes:
Build Queue - Can't figure it out
Tax/Science/Lux rate - Can't figure out how to change it
There are a few minor bugs in cursor placement while naming your tribes
And the music isn't great. Time to load up my midis. :D
Well....I'll be back later to continue...I'm in 2190 BC right now...so it's still early.
spycatcher34 Oct 30, 2001, 05:23 PM Wait a min...no scenarios???? Thats a major WTF!-they said it would like come with 2. :/
How are the graphics and does the game run really smoothe?
CornMaster Oct 30, 2001, 05:39 PM Well...there are 2. But I think they are just maps.
The game runs pretty well on my computer.
Now on to some recent interesting stuff. I just ran into what I thought was a White Civ, but they wouldn't talk to me. They have one conscripted warrior and one settlement. Of course....my scout can't attack so I just walk around them. Then I figured.....hey that must be the barbs!!!
So I will wipe them out shortly.
I figured out how to change the science and luxeries....anyway....I better get back to the game.
Cunobelin Of Hippo Oct 30, 2001, 06:05 PM :goodjob: Keep us updated! And let those barbarians know the natural order of things
Psiwar Oct 30, 2001, 06:09 PM Keep reporting. It's great to see how the game plays. :goodjob:
CornMaster Oct 30, 2001, 06:16 PM Well...Installment 3.
Shortly after meeting the barbs to the northwest they started coming from the rafters!!! They chased my workers and settlers back to my cities as I braced for their attack. Bahhhhh!! Both warriors fell before my mighty spearmen!! One of which is now veteran. :D
My warrior (Which has been exploring for a LONG time!!!) finally met the American's. So they said they would introduce me to the French for 20 gold. Well I tried to haggle him down to 15...but he wouldn't budge from 20, and I accepted his offer. So the French want Cermoninal Burial and 3 gold for contact with the English....will I didn't want to meet them that badly, and tried to get it for 15 gold. No dice. So I broke it off there. A few turns later the Germans come into view, we trade some tech and go along our way. But two barb warriors just popped up near my new city, and my archer may be too far away!!! NNNOOOO!!!!!
More in a few minutes...
CornMaster Oct 30, 2001, 06:28 PM Well...I picked off one barb with my archer...but the other slipped by and sacked my city.....but they don't capture the cities...they just take gold. So they stold 30 gold  and I got a reminder from my military advisor that we should bulk up. :D
Oh well...what does he know. ;)
Anyway...Back to it....
Thunderfall Oct 30, 2001, 06:38 PM I uploaded the screenshots Corn sent me to the server. Enjoy! :)

Thunderfall Oct 30, 2001, 07:10 PM Corn, can you demand tribute? I don't see that option in the barter table...
CornMaster Oct 30, 2001, 07:14 PM Well....not a whole lot has happened. My borders have expanded further do to excellent culture from my capital....but my other cities have none. :( Got to build temples!!! Anywho....growth under deposism is almost non-existant!! My new cities have more corruption then I care to admit.
But I'm hanging in there. The Barbs. rasacked another city and stole 26 more gold!! Then I traded 50 gold, horseback riding, and contat with the Germans to the Americans for Map Making. I think I got a little ripped there!!! But ohhhh well.
I've taken out another 2 barb. villages so I'm getting some of my gold back.
When I discovered horseback riding I noticed horses all over the map!!! But none in my radius. :( So I built my first colony!!! And now I can build horsemen in my cities. I've almost completed a road to a German city, so then we can trade resources!! :D The game is pretty cool so far!!!
Cunobelin Of Hippo Oct 30, 2001, 07:15 PM Of course you can...at the bargaining table ;) Say "I want 100 gold in exchange for your life" :D Sounds like demanding tribute to me
Robespierre Oct 30, 2001, 07:15 PM It certainly would seem reasonable that Barbarians invading your city not only makes you lose gold but also makes the city lose population points and happiness. Do they just take gold?
The AI also seems fairly inflexible in diplomacy, I hope they aren't always so obstinate or they will suffer from the same problems as in the previous games.
CornMaster Oct 30, 2001, 07:17 PM I would assume that you just say that you want xx gold and then don't offer anything. Then Select the option on the bottom that reads "You better accept that offer, if you know what's good for you." or something like that. :D
Esca Oct 30, 2001, 07:17 PM Thanks Cornmaster and Thunderfall.

CivPartisan Oct 30, 2001, 07:19 PM Hey Cornmaster!
That is great! What a fantastic first game....but would you bulk up and kick someone's *ss...don't be afraid to be imperial...I'm sorry, I just want to see you take over the world :D
Anyway...thanks for the wonderful shots and look forward to more!
John
P.S. I especially like the shots of them talking...that's pretty good...

The just took my gold....but both cities were size 1....so it's hard to tell.
The AI also seems fairly inflexible in diplomacy, I hope they aren't always so obstinate or they will suffer from the same problems as in the previous games.
They aren't inflexable. Abe asked for Horseback Riding and Polythesiem in exchange for Map Making. But I didn't want to give him Polythesiem yet...so I added contact with the Germans, and 50 gold. Which he accepted. Pretty flexable to me. :D
Psiwar Oct 30, 2001, 07:24 PM All the screenies are sweet. Hmmm...that Domestic Advisor is looking sexier than ever.

Apollo Oct 30, 2001, 07:51 PM What difficulty level is this game on? I read through the previous posts, and didn't see it stated. Sorry if I just missed it somewhere.
CornMaster Oct 30, 2001, 08:00 PM It's on Cheiftan :)
I just over threw deposism to change to Monarchy, but it threw my cities into disorder.
CornMaster Oct 30, 2001, 08:08 PM Well....I've killed yep more barbs. Even a few horsemen. I built a road to a German city but it's not conected to any resources yet....so no trading. :( Then he was killed by a barb. But I just noticed a lot of Iron deposits. So going to get some colonies down. They the Germans will warm up to me. (They are kind of pissed right now. ;))
Pablo Oct 30, 2001, 08:10 PM Good Luck on your first game! I hope you grow in culture and change the goverment type to Mornachy. Thanks for all! greate pic's and game info

spycatcher34 Oct 30, 2001, 08:31 PM Hey this is great corn!:goodjob: :D
So whats going on in the tech area of the game?:D
smallstepforman Oct 30, 2001, 08:36 PM I've seen the screenshots where you illustrate the line of sight concept. Is the line of sight broken if you stand next to a mountain (ie you cannot see behind the mountain)?
CornMaster Oct 30, 2001, 08:43 PM After intruding into American territory, Abe politely asked me to leave.....which I agreed too....but decided to strike a deal at the same time, and for some gold he introduced me to the English.
Once I talked to the English I got them to trade their map for some gold. Now I know where they are. :D I built a ship and a warrior to ride it. I've gone deep into German territory and am going to take a city. :D So I'll have some war time screens shots soon. ;)
But I've built the Pyrimids, and working on the lighthouse. :)
Erdrick Oct 30, 2001, 08:45 PM Played my first game of Civ3 earlier, took Greeks on a chieftan level/4 civ/small map. It was much different than what I expected. It's going to take a while to get use to the attacking style that will have to be used. It's also going to be hard to wage war on a foreign island/continent unless you have 1. A city on it, or 2. the Battlefield Medicine small wonder, otherwise your units get ripped up pretty quickly.
I screwed around for most of the game, and then just built the UN a few years before the forced retirement so that I could have something other than a "score" victory (I got a diplomacy victory, I was elected head of the UN). I just got done messing around on a prince level game (actually it's not "prince," but I forget the name they gave it, and I looked in the manual and they had it wrong in there, saying that it was still "prince"). I basically got my butt kicked because I didn't expand fast enough and got sandwiched between the ocean, the Americans, and the Romans. Even on Prince level you have to expand quickly.. when I play another game tonight I'm going to try building 1 road and then adding my worker to my city to help produce a settler quicker (for those who don't know, you need a pop 3 city to produce a settler since a settler takes up 2 pop points)
I was a bit irritated how they had the overall interface set up. I knew it wasn't just a window like civ 2, where you could do all kinds of other things like icq and surf the net easily... but this is much much worse. I couldn't even alt-tab out of the game, and basically had to exit the game to do anything else (I got locked up after I came out of the game after the first time as well.) Overall I like it, and I'm sure it's gonna be a great game on MP. Happy playing.. and watch out for those raging barbarians... eek!

The shrooms ARE huts, you will notice as your cities get bigger, these shrooms grow around YOU cities too....as they expand. :D
Grigory Rasputin Oct 30, 2001, 10:46 PM GO CORN GO!
has the AI effectively attacked you yet? I'm really hoping that the AI will be able to actually systematically invade, not just kinda have units randomly wander toward you in times of war.
stupid amazon.com... haven't even shipped my copy of the LE yet. urg.
Mark_in_Va Oct 30, 2001, 10:53 PM I'm all the way up to 1946 or so, and have never been attacked by anything other than a barbarian. Then again, I have strong ties with every group on my continent. I'm well in the lead culturally, but power wise, I suck.

RouTaran Oct 30, 2001, 11:21 PM with all the added "stuff" the AI has to work on, how is the turn processing speeds? does it take like forever (aka BOTF) or is it as smooth as it was in Civ1/2?

mirrek23 Oct 31, 2001, 06:00 AM CornMaster mentioned he couldn't figure out the build queue... I struggled with that for a while, too.
You click to make your choice of the current build order. Then, just shift-click to add other units/buildings/wonders to the queue (this is from the city window).

Wow.. In Brazil Civ III will be launched in Nov 1, or Nov 5 (Nov 2 is holliday).
shaglio Oct 31, 2001, 07:31 AM Build Queue - Can't figure it out
Hold down shift and click on the things you want to build. To change something, click on it in the queue to highlight it and then hold shift and click on something else to build.
Tax/Science/Lux rate - Can't figure out how to change it
I think it's at the top right corner of the domestic adviser screen
I have a gripe of my own (only one - so far, so good):
These little sentence blurbs pop up to tell you things such as when a unit becomes a veteran. But sometimes the screen changes to another unit before you can read the blurb.
CornMaster Oct 31, 2001, 08:42 AM Thanks for the build queue help guys!!!

SeanK Oct 31, 2001, 09:45 AM <long post, spoiler warning!>
Hi all. I've been lurking here for a few months, and now decided to get involved.
I bought Civ III yesterday, loaded it up, and played a bunched of abortive games, never getting much beyond 500 AD before quitting or restarting. I played on Warlord (after playing Emperor in Civ II for the last few months).
My impressions after an evening of play:
The barbarian huts do look like mushrooms. I call the white units (barbarians) "mushroom people" now. If a barabarian appears, it means there's a hut nearby. Hunting them down is quite fun. I like it more than the magically appearing barbarians from Civ II.
The AI is expanding faster than I am at the moment. That was my big improvement curve last night. Many of my games I found myself with two or three cities and no place to expand while the AI had four or more cities.
I love the new combat system. When your unit gets promoted, it throws up its arms and cheers. Very cool.
In war, the AI goes after workers and settlers to capture them, ignoring military units. The captured worker or settler makes a beeline for the border while the military unit plays interference. If you get into a war, protect your workers! I was getting tired by the time this happened and lost a bunch.
OF course, capturing enemy workers means a free workforce or extra population...
Research is tricky for me right now. Better advances cost more and lesser advances cost less as you move on. Thus, at the beginning, pottery is 32 turns to research, but after you have a few advances, Writing may cost 16 turns while pottery takes 6. No more rushing to Monarchy I think. I'm going to have to investigate research a little to get to monarchy faster. Usually I didn't hit it until close to 1 AD.
Culture is cool, and a lot trickier than it appears on the surface. The palace ensures that your capital will expand, but you need temples for the other cities or they stay at the small border. The dilemma: temple for a better border (you can't work tiles outside the border) or a worker/settler to expand? And then there's the pesky Greeks creeping up on you so a spearman might be good...
The AI doesn't send out settlers alone. I always saw settlers on the map with a warrior escort. The warrior fortifies in the city first thing.
Diplomacy is cool. I'm not a militaristic player, so I like the expanded culture and diplomacy. The new trade system is also nice. I've had workers deep in AI territory constructing roads so I could set up a trade network.
I think that's it for now. No crashes after hours of play, but Civ III isn't as zippy as Civ II. I may load it on my laptop tonight, which is faster, and see how it runs. I look forward to talking strategy with you all.
torero Oct 31, 2001, 09:50 AM do you still have to approach another civ's unit to talk to them if you have an alliance with them or can you talk to them at any point? (like if you had an embassy)
kill the germans!!
jc011 Oct 31, 2001, 10:07 AM thanks corn!! thats amazing... growing huts!
Thunderfall Oct 31, 2001, 11:04 AM Cornmaster has captured the replay movie of his first game! The movie is full size and is 65 seconds long, in DivX format! The size is only 2.5 MB.
Right click on the link and select "Save target as" to download the movie:
http://www.civfanatics.com/uploads/civ3replay_divx.avi
If you don't have a DivX player, you can get it at Divx.com. Thanks Corn for the movie! :goodjob:
torero Oct 31, 2001, 11:16 AM very cool corn!!
you were spawned at a good place since you have lots of room for expansion on the west side. send video when you attack somebody!
CornMaster Oct 31, 2001, 11:28 AM Well...as I end off last night I captured a German city. This obviouly started a war. ;)
But with only one warrior defending a city near the center of the German empire it didn't stand much chance. :( And the city fell. And interesting note is that the AI attacked with AT LEAST 2 units. 2 warriors, or an archer, warrior, and horseman, etc... So no more picking of units one by one.
So my next action was to take a German City that was closer to mine. After taking 6 attacks with my catapult (but it only hit the target once. ) I took over the size 2 city with my elite archers and raized it. Unfortunatally this left my catapult vunerable and the Germans captured it!! And then my 2 archers and horseman were slaughtered but German archers. So I retreated my spearman and warrior back to my borders. But here come the Germans, 2 archers and 2 warriors. They surround the capital and start pounding. Luckly I had 2 spearmen in the city, (one of which was veteran) and most of the Germans attackers perished. But I got a Great Leader out of the whole thing!! Ivan the Terrible. I'm saving him for my next war so I can have and army of swordsmen.
So I made peace with the Germans and they retreated remaining units. In the mean time I built the great library, lighthouse, and great wall. The lightshouse triggered my Golden Age which I'm playing through now. I don't see a huge difference. I think my capital got more production, but that's about it so far.
The barbarians are EVERYWHERE and like sacking my colonies. I was only able to build 2 swordsmen before they destroyed my Iron colony, but I'll get it back...oh yes. And they are building settlements EVERYWHERE. Although I guess that a good thing....because I get a lot of veteran defenders for my real wars. :D
Anyway....back to it.
ChrTh Oct 31, 2001, 12:06 PM Ugh! I'm on NT 4.0 and can't watch it. Grrrrrr...
Can anyone redo it in a different format?
Drew62 Oct 31, 2001, 12:10 PM I can't download and play divx.
Would really love to see this. Anyone......

torero Oct 31, 2001, 12:14 PM you need to download the divx codec
i have one site that you can get it from:

Drew62 Oct 31, 2001, 12:42 PM Thanx
Thunderfall Oct 31, 2001, 12:55 PM But I got a Great Leader out of the whole thing!! Ivan the Terrible.
Are you seruous!? IVAN THE TERRIBLE is Russians' Great Leader?! This is unthinkable. :D
hegemon Oct 31, 2001, 01:51 PM Civ III is a great game!
I got it yesterday and I started a Japanese civ and it is great.
One qualm, though...
Why did they make the game so the CD has to be in the drive to play? It is tedious to have to take it out and put it in for other applications. The full install, which takes a huge 700MB, should include everything in the CD and should be fully functional without the CD in the drive.
I am  .
yang27 Oct 31, 2001, 01:52 PM Anybody figure out how to turn the city "area" or "border" permanently on? It's rather difficult to distinguish between cultural border and city border.
Thanks.

In november I'll only be able to watch screenshots, read previews, interviews, etc but I will not be able to check the real game.
P.S.
I'm moving to America... !

Caro Mago,

kittenOFchaos Oct 31, 2001, 04:16 PM Now I've been optimistic about civ3 since I first heard about it...but I can't believe those screenies, it looks so GOOD!
I'm crying with happiness at present and feel very upset that I do not yet have civ3 due to my geographical position in the UK.
Am following all this with unbounded pleasure...thanks Cornmaster for the pics and story, you have put any doubts about civ3 away.
 :goodjob:
One question for now as I want to race round the rest of the forum: is the whale and fish density as small as it looks from screenies? It certainly must be lower than in civ2!!!
Carlos Oct 31, 2001, 05:40 PM Hey, Pablo, this afternoon it has been announced in infogrames representative's site (FD comunicação) that Civ3 is already in stores; tomorrow, after work i will check at r2v2, Saraiva and Cultura. Anyway, i can´t find any additional information online, i hope that the press release has some truth in it.
CornMaster Oct 31, 2001, 05:43 PM Well....as the war on all fronts continues....I make no significant gains, and neither does the enemies.
I patched it up with the French, and English. But the war with Germany still rages. A few of my knights have fallen to German cities, but regardless I'm holding ground and expanding to the rest of my contient...unfortunatally the Germans have brought about 10 units into my borders and are just walking around.....although we are at peace, I'm getting worried!!! Anywho.....I wish the zones of control were back. ;) That would keep them out.
arkammler Oct 31, 2001, 06:05 PM Keep up the good work CornMaster! :D :king:
Make sure to send Thunderfall more screenshots. :goodjob:
I do not have the game yet, I have been to Wal-Mart the last two days looking for it. When they get it, I will.
CornMaster Oct 31, 2001, 06:08 PM Well...I kindly asked Bizmark to get his ass off my property.
He denyed....AND declared war on me!!!
So you know what??? I killed them all...MUHAHHAHHAHAHAHAHAAA!! Took out all 10 units but I lost a knight and a swordsman. Small price to pay to get that scum off my lands.
I also used Ivan the Terrible to form an army of Knights. And they have destroyed 3 units and raized a city. Once an army wins a fight your able to built a new wonder called "Heroic Epic"....adds 4 cultire points per turn.
Anyway....back to the game.
joespaniel Oct 31, 2001, 06:18 PM *sigh* I have to live vicariously through Cornmaster, for now. I pre-ordered my game from Amazon, and it has not come yet. Anyone here do the same?
Cornmaster - Are the Germans on the same continent, or another?
I am curious about how much naval warfare and seaborn invasions occur.
Give 'em hell!!!http://community.theunderdogs.org/smiley/angry/flamingdevil.gif

Yes the Germans are on the same contient, as are the Americans. The Greeks have 4 cities and the English have one.
I used my Galley once to take a city....but not since then....and neither have the enemies...yet.

I pre-ordered from Amazon a couple weeks ago, and I ordered some CDs with it as well. They said they would ship things as they became available, but they never shipped my CDs! Now I'm just waiting to see if it all comes together, and watching the ship date get pushed back and back. Originally they said Nov. 1, now they say Nov. 9.
Cunobelin Of Hippo Oct 31, 2001, 06:33 PM Hehe. Take that Bismark! :goodjob: More screenshots PLEEEAAAASSSEEEEE!! How is your resource situation? Not going to be hamstrung by no knights in the near future are you?

When my Iron was taken by the barbs I couldn't build swordsman anymore...so I had to take it back with inferior units...but now that I've secured a few sources...I should be ok. Unfortunatally my cities aren't all connected yet...as the barbs killed some of my road build workers. Luckly when I raized that German city.....I captured two German workers. :D
Anywho....TF will be uploading more SSes shortly.
Pggar Oct 31, 2001, 06:43 PM Have you used the privateers yet? If so, how powerful is the unit and how is it to attack without going to war? Do the oposing civs get suspicious?
Pggar Oct 31, 2001, 06:54 PM TF the link http://www.civfanatics.com/civ3images/cornmaster/attack_on_germany2.jpg seems to be broken.
CornMaster Oct 31, 2001, 06:54 PM I haven't used them yet....but Privateers are: (From the Civilopedia)
"Privateers are small Frigates that carry no national markings, allowing them to attack and be attacked without revealing the nationatally of the ship..."
The stats are:
Attack: 1
Defence: 1
Movement: 3

Crusader Nov 01, 2001, 12:11 AM Have you noticed yet how when a civ is down to it's last couple of cities, the defending units are much more fierce? In Civ2 the defending units of the capitol fight harder than most, but in Civ3 it seems different...... do you suppose they're trying to discourage military conquest? they also have seemed to stack the rules against expansionism.
WUM Nov 01, 2001, 02:09 AM He Corn,
thanks again for making the waiting bearable...
a question:
after razing the German city you got 2 workers.
Did this mean it was a size 2-city???
important because take a size 8-city. You will choose between a city with 8 resistors ór no city but 8 workers!!!
if this is so, it seems to me it´s an easy choice, expecially when you still have to work on you roadsystem!
:goodjob:

After researching engineering your workers get that ability.
WUM, from this thread (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?threadid=7405) i got the impression that hazing a city, even large ones, gives you a couple of workers, not the number of people in that city. Care to confirm Corn?
Also, why didn't you haze heidelburg. Were you in need of the horse, assuming that the resource is a horse? The location of the city is poor.

Game fans across Brazil can stop the countdown. Sid Meier's Civilization III, the most eagerly-awaited strategy game of the year, arrives in all the country's stores today, 31 of October. With the manual in Portuguese. The Brazilian launch will be simultaneous with that in the United States. Although Europe and the other countries in South and Central America will get the game 15 days later.
"It is with much pride that Infogrames of Brazil launches CIV III. Besides being the best game of the year, we managed to follow the release date for the United States. This is thanks to the efficient work of our Department of Product and Marketing, Mr Frédéric" says Mr Martin, director of Marketing and Sales.
Those who do not have to work over the holiday will be able to be have fun managing the 16 civilizations that the game offers. Civ III brings together all the elements of the previous versions, that had made it a bestseller, and improves upon it with new graphical features using more advanced techniques.
The two first episodes have had 4 million copies sold. To know more about the game, you only need to access the site: www.civ3.com, that each week introduces a different civilization.
Now I confess that I have no idea why I did this, as it is not particularly exciting to read. For Portugese speakers, I did alter some of the text to improve the way it reads in English, but the gist is there. :D Can we have posts in english in future please? If you have to post in other languages then ask one of the appropriate moderators if you can have a thread in your language in the OT forum. There's a French jokes thread in H&J.

Civ III is a great game!
I am  .
700MB IS NOTHING FOR A FULL INSTALL, JUST BUY AND INSTALL "VAMPIRE THE MASQURADE" ITS A MIND BONGELING 2GB FULL INSTALL :D :D
OR COSSACKS 1.5 GB, SUDDEN-STRIKE 1&2 1.5 GB FULL INSTALL.
I ADVICE GO AND BUY A BIGGER HARD-DISK :) :)
Crusader Nov 01, 2001, 10:11 AM They give you the choice to keep the city or raze it, and if you raze a city it will yield 2 workers, because basically 2 workers equals 1 settler, and in essence you are "kidnapping" your ememies' citizens into a life of slave labor. They are able to recapture their own workers as well as yours if the workers are off doing something without a defensive military unit nearby.

It could be....I never really paid attention. I just throught those units were suportted by that city and working near by and that's why I captured them.
Also, why didn't you haze heidelburg. Were you in need of the horse, assuming that the resource is a horse? The location of the city is poor.
I had planned to make that my landing point for my envasion force (I was going to ferry units over on ships and strike the Capital) but they took it back before my army could get there....so my forces raized another city instead. It was size 1 or 2 but I didn't get any workers.
Crusader Nov 01, 2001, 10:54 AM Corn, I just noticed your location is Fort Pierce, Florida. That's ironic. I spent my teenage years in Port St. Lucie and attended Ft. Pierce Central High. It's a small world! anyway, back to Civ3.....
moof Nov 01, 2001, 01:14 PM Cornmaster,
Just adding our Thanks for your great post here.
Looking forward to more info & screenshots.
Leowind Nov 01, 2001, 01:56 PM Finally caught up with the end of this thread. Corn and TF, THANKS for all the great details about Corn's first game. It has been great to read through and see all the screen shots. Of course, it just makes me sadder that my computer won't run Civ III, so my wait is indefinite  I'm getting more bummed all the time :(
CornMaster Nov 01, 2001, 02:35 PM Well....I'm back. And with some interesting AI news.
Now maybe this was just a conidence but the French and the Germans had an alliance against me. That's fine. But we are at peace (The Germans I mean)
So the French drop a swordsman next to "Iron Curtin" One of my Iron Cities. Well...I mistook the Pink for English (Which I'm friendly to.) Well...opps, they took over my city!!! and took away my source of Iron (one of them)
The Germans on the other end of my empire had 6 archers sitting on my horse's and roads that connects West and East CornEmpire together. Well...THEY PILLAGED ALL THE ROADS!!! So I lost one of my horse resources too!!! Then obviously declared war on me.
Well...I was following them around with a few knights to make sure they didn't try anything funny. Well...they did!! So I picked one off but not before 4 of them attacked "West Side Hills" Luckly my pikeman and spearman were able to hold them off....just barely though....
So...I took over German "Stugart" a while ago as a cushin between my captial and them. And that's where I stationed my army (Which kicks major ass, by the way.)
I also built a fortress with a catapult and knight stationed there.
Anyway....I'm just currious if the AI will pull off more percision strikes like it did against me...or if that was just a fluke. :(
I managed to repel them again...for the third time. But man...when they attack...they come in swarms!!!! Also anoter note......ships can not defend cities at all....they just crumble.
Back to the game.
CornMaster Nov 01, 2001, 02:49 PM Here is an interesting fact....when you capture an enemy settler, it turns into two workers.
Oh yeah.....now the Greeks declare war on me!!! I didn't even do anything!!! Hostile AI?!?!?!?!? :(
EDIT: Oh yeah.....Armies can only attack once per turn.
joespaniel Nov 01, 2001, 02:58 PM From what I've read, the AI will pull off some pretty tricky sh!t. You actualy have to watch out, when they come, they come in numbers and have a strategy (imagine that).
Wait til the modern age, Corn. They'll realy do some wild sh!t then. If anyone is interested, check out this article:

ChrTh Nov 02, 2001, 07:24 AM Well, Cornmaster?!? I need my fix! :smoke:
And I know there wasn't any good Trek on last night, so you can't use that as an excuse (TNN's just got to Season 2...soon they will be in Season 3 and TNG will be worth watching every night...) :mutant:
Did you roll the Greeks yet? More screenshots!

I'm a demanding little bugger, ain't I?

CornMaster Nov 02, 2001, 08:54 AM Well....here is a zip file containing 4 or 5 more screenshots.
TF seems less interested since he got his own copy of Civ 3. ;) And I have no where I can upload them.....well.....here they are.
Civ's will still try and enter your borders to build a city......I had to chase down a Hopitle and a Settler....damn bastards. But unfortunatally I can't make a dent into Greek Cities :( The Hopitle is very strong when fortified in a city....but I am about to move an army against the Germans....Could be some fireworks. ;)
Well....it won't let me upload them..it's too big. I'll e-mail them to TF...I'm sure he will upload for me.

Not true! ;) You can upload them yourself to the forum. I've increased the attachment size limit to 500 KB. You should zip them up first so they don't make the page too long to load...
joespaniel Nov 02, 2001, 04:09 PM I picked up my LE last night. Played til 3 am. *yawn* Made for a long day at work.:D
I have found the computer to be unable to handle it very well, even though I have double the specified requirements. Has anyone had this happen?
It makes for a slow and sluggish time of it. It doesnt flow like civ2. Clicking on cities or units takes a few seconds to react.
Any comments about that?
Regardless, I enjoyed it very much. Slow or not, I will continue my first game (Go Bismark!) until the end.
Good luck, Corn!:goodjob:

Arrian Nov 05, 2001, 11:35 AM I've played a number of games now, 1 on chieftan and several on warlord. I went with the Greeks each time, figuring the combo of commercial/scientific worked best for my play style (largely peaceful, expand as much as I can... assimilate through culture and conquer only if I need a special resource someone else has).
My latest game went very well, as I started on a large continent and, for the 1st time, started an early war (w/the Egyptians).
The setup went like this: I started in the SE corner, the French in the South, the Romans in the West, the Egyptians in the NW. The Germans, English, Indians and Chinese were overseas.
In any event, the Egyptians built a city with 6 spices in its radius... SIX! Well, I just had to have it. I continued on to take Thebes and a couple of other cities and then stopped. Using archers and hoplites was effective and I got swordsmen part way through the campaign, which also helped. I built the Forbidden Palace (best minor wonder, bar none) in Thebes, which took FOREVER, since thebes lost nearly all its production to waste. Once complete, however, and combined w/democracy, corruption went from crippling to minor annoyance (this may also have been attributable to the fact that I had TONS of luxury resources and nearly all of my people were happy).
I assimilated a couple of French cities near my capital, which was nice, and concentrated on tech and wonders for a while... I built the G.Library, Hanging Gardens, Cop's Observatory, Sistine Chapel... you get the idea. The Romans, with whom I had enjoyed good relations, up and declared war on me for no reason (they didn't even demand anything). It was touch and go briefly as they hit a relatively weak section of my empire with two large stacks of pikeman/knights, but I held on. My new musketmen helped greatly :) I then counter-attacked w/Knights and such and took a city before they asked for peace.
Later on, having discovered Steam Power, I noticed that the only Coal resources on my continent were within Roman territory - near Rome, actually. Thought process:
I need coal to build railroads
I have no coal.
The Romans have coal.
The Romans are weak, and have messed with me before.
The Romans must die.
I love the fact that wars now have a purpose! In any event, the Romans did die, and I built my railroads. After that, I was all set... I built up my cities, survived some minor global warming (which seems to occur 1 square at a time) until I got to egology and recycling, and discovered that I had all of the other resources I need. The only worry was that I only have one oil resource... but there are others I could easily acquire with my Modern Armor/Radar Artillery/Stealth Bombers/Mech Inf/Battleships&Destroyers. *GRIN* I am presently building spaceship parts.
I am pondering playing either a Commercial/Religious or Religious/Scientific civ next... or possibly sticking w/the Greeks.
p.s. One annoying thing did happen... I built the UN. Once built, it asked me if I wanted to hold a council vote. I said "sure."
The Egyptians have voted for Queen Elizabeth of the Engish
The French have voted for Queen Elizabeth of the English
The Germans (who were AT WAR w/the English) have voted for Q.E. of the English
The Indians have voted for Q.E. of the English
The Chinese have voted for Q.E. of the English.
YOU LOSE. Luckily , I had just saved the game the turn before.
WUM Nov 06, 2001, 12:50 AM was this game on the easiest level?
and what happened with the UN???
i mean, YOU build it, don´t you vote???
Why didn´t you vote for someone else, or when you have to vote first: why not vote for yourself, so no other civ can win that way?
duke o' york Nov 06, 2001, 06:44 AM Surely the UN is run on a democratic system and therefore only requires a majority decision rather than the support of all nations. Even if you voted for yourself then I would have thought that the sizes of the other empires are such that they would have enough votes to elect Queen Elizabeth outright.
WUM Nov 06, 2001, 07:37 AM i suppose you´re right Duke, but it shouldn´t be this way.
if you build the UN you´ll have a permanent seat in the council, so you´ll have an 'essential vote' (i forgot the normal term for this, if one can prevent the decision).
In reality USA and former Soviet Union repeatedly used this to prevent certain decisions of the UN.
I say the builder of the UN should have this advantage!
ainwood Nov 06, 2001, 10:11 AM "Vito" rights for the owner would effectively prevent the owner from ever losing by diplomatic victory. Still - there must be some way to balance it better?
Arrian Nov 06, 2001, 11:04 AM To clarify, yeah, I voted for myself, but no one else did. I have no problem w/the Egyptians voting against me - I kicked their butts early in the game and they hated me. That's fine. In fact, if they voted for me I would have been surprised. The French, on the other hand, had been friends and allies for thousands of years. The Germans were ACTIVELY FIGHTING the English. This gave me pause.
I think it may need some tweaking. That being said, it was the first time I've ever tried it, so who knows? Maybe it was a fluke.
