View Full Version : FIRST game

Hey guys I remember someone talking about having a first game thread. I didn't see one so, here is my first game.

My setup:
Pent 500, 128mb, Voodoo2, Old 2d 2mb video, tons of HD space (multigig) Full install.

First game:
Aztecs on HUGE earth map with 16 civs on Cheftain level

Aztecs started near tip of South America.
Iroquis, China are also in SA
Americans, India, and Japan are in NA

The game is very slow on my setup. Pieces move so slow that you have to wait a sec after each move or else you may end up moving a unit when you don't want to - I suspect that this is the result of my slow machine(unless people with better setups have the same thing occur). I will try a smaller map on my next game.

Communism was listed twice in the Civlopedia list.

Battles have not been the highlight of the game for me. Nearly every attacker has won the attack (even when attacking units in mountains!!) regardless of how good or bad the odds were...

After a 400 year war with the Iroquois I sued for piece by giving up a city.

Cultural victory MAY be too easy on Chieftain level - After the war I am slowly sucking up the rest of the cities on SA. Almost no resistence... "resistence is futile" or maybe it should be "war is futile"

It is currently 1810AD(scoring a 96 so far) and everyone in my hemisphere is still rowing galleys and I have the lead war defense unit - the 1/4 musketman. We are still in the middle ages.

I did get the Great Library early in the game and something that is different for that wonder is that you HAVE to have contact with other civs. In other words, the GL only worked on the people on my continent because no one can cross the sea yet!

Meanwhile most of my cities are above an 8 and most of the enemy have sities below 6.

Due to the slowness of the interface on my machine, the game is becoming unplayable (due to length of time between each turn), so I will be starting a new game (which I won't comment on this thread) on a small map.

Please share your experiences and good luck!

BTW-

The war started with the iroquis because they slipped through my borders to place a city in a small gap between my cities. I attacked the very small city with one defender with about three units and lost all of them. One of the few times in the game when attackers didn't win the battle.

They then attacked my northern most city and razed it. They captured my capital attacking with a lone sword man agains t a lone spear man (far from the front). They captured 3 more of my cities over 400 years. Two cities rebelled from him back to me(including the capital).

I gave them one more city when I sued for peace and then proceeded to get back other cities (and more) with culture attack.

Let me see if I get this straight.. you have it set to the easiest difficulty.. and despite superior tactics and (Most likely) due to some BS advantage the AI is kicking your butt all over the world. AND Firaxis removed the cheat option..

Thanks a lot Firaxis! [punch]

Have you ever considered that maybe he's just crap at Civ?

Thats a fair point :D

One qustion though: wehat do the other civs think of you when you take one of their citys through culture: do they get pissed off or does it not effect them

Did you read his second post?

Graeme the mad:

I don't know about them, but it would make ME mad. When the enemy attacks with culture, is it grounds for war? I can't imagine being penalized for trying to defend myself from McDonalds, treaty or no.

I was attempting to start a thread where people could share thier first game experience.

Setsuna- The AI wasn't necessarily kicking my butt, I figured that I could kill a city that was one turn old and deep in my terratory. So I started a war. My intention was to take the city and then pay them off for peace.

I did not bulk up my forces before the attack because up until that point nearly every attacker won the battle.

After that first attack failed, they swarmed my northern city and a couple of startups nearby.

When I said culture attack - I meant that my existing cities culture took over the other cities automatically (no effort - and no one appeared to be upset- and no wars are starting because of it in my second game).

My initial reaction is that there is no need to fight while on chieftain level(at least for the first 1800 years). Just build temples, library's and etc. and you will take over your continent. A theory that I am exploring in my second game.

I hope others will just post thier first game here with maybe some advice. I posted my system specs so that others with similar specs might avoid the type of game I set up(huge 16civ). It bogged down the game too much- Standard map with 8 civs is being handled better.

Ps- I originally posted this on the gen discussions board because I did not know that this board had opened up. So I guess there is room for everyone to start their own thread for each game. I will not be updating this one, since I am on to my second game. Goodluck all.

I learned the hard way about attacking someone, and not being prepared for their counterattack. You can believe me when I tell you, that from now on, I will carefully consider all military action.

There is nothing better than razing a high level city. If I don't have the troops to keep the ppls happy and fend off the "bad guys" at the same time, I opt to raze the f'er.

I received civ III from a friend in Canada Monday the 5th.
I played all the night (steal 4'oclock in the morning!à.

My first remarks are:
* The game is a little bit slow (even with a PC III 500Mhz - 256 M RAM)
* I like the new interface of the game.
* The culture is a very great thing for players who plays pacific way!
* The diplomacy is very usefull and offers a lot of thing to do with neighboords.
* I envoyed my game : i have not finish it yet.

I played my first game saturday on my brother's computer (my own computer is too slow unfortunately, a P200). He had a p400 and the game didn't run (too) slow, so I don't know what those people with a p500 are talkin about. I haven't finished this game yet but till now I like civ 3 very much! First I was a bit scared because it seemed to look a lot like CTP, but after playing for a while I found out that it is very different from CTP. I played on a small world, chieftain (of course, the first game), and with 5 civs (that was the maximum apparently). It is true that the attacking units win almost all the time (I almost got killed!) but that will be due to the fact it is chieftain. But I think they have increased the luck factor indeed. I think the borders are very cool and the fact that you can see more far when you're standing on a mountain or hill is also very realistic. I didn't come very far with this game (I'm discovering invention right now) because I had no time for it, but next weekend I will go home again (I study somewhere else) and then I will finish this game.
Civ 3: ***** (out of 5)

I'm not surprised you have problems with your setup...a pentium III with 256 mb RAM...time to kickup the ram to 512 MB and get a pentium 4!

I though I had a good PC configuration! :(

addiv, what is the Civ III setup configuration you used in order to take the same as you said that you do not have problems with your PC II configuration.

Thanks

LeSphinx, what kind of slowness, and at what points? If scrolling is slow and it takes time for a new unit to appear from the shroud you probably encountered a bug, which can be soved by using microsoft's version of video card drivers instead of up to date video drivers or put hardware acceleration down to one notch from the lowest with your current drivers (you will have to delete or rename the .bik video files from your Civ3\Art\Movies\ directory because the movies will not play anymore at low acceleration. The setting is in advanced display properties for windows.

Meneer Popken,

The slowest thing is when I want to see all the advisor screens.
It's take very long to display the informations.

Thanks anyway for your answer. I will try it tonight.
