Okay.. heres the story... Im playing Japan, on the Huge World Map.. I spawned in the North America continent in the US part, and I had a couple of wars with Mongolia (Kicked there ass till they had 1 city, then demanded like 4 science advances) then later again, because they were making cities all over the place.. waged war with China which as underneath me in Mexico aswell.

Now, its 1936 AD, and I am not in the Industrial age yet, I am Despotism. I have managed to take all of Mexico down to the Panama area. and I am colonizing north to Canada... I asked for Right of Passage with China so I could explore South America (I had Galleys-No travel to deep water, so I had to travel along shallow w3ater through chinas territory) China shares South american with India (who I had an alliance with to drive China out of Mexico and Panama)... right now, China is exploiting my Right of Passage agreement, and is sending plenty of Riders and Settlers north to Canada (which has plenty of room) And.. I don't like it. I am really trying to settle up there as quick as possible, but they already have a town in the area of Quebec above my town near New York.

The problem is, I have 600 Gold.. but I am at +1 and its falling! And my Study is at like 35 turns! I am WAY behind the other Civs... Im a newb still, so Im not good at balancing both.. I brought a screenshot... I thinkk the problem is Corruption.. but all I can choose from is Republic, Despotism or Monarchy.... so.. help me to get my income up again!

Thank you!

your problem is your still in a Despotism, you NEED to change to Democracy

yeah, get out of despotism as soon as you can... i mean, NOW! click on that green button that reads "despotism" and follow the instructions... then you'll be a happier gamer. :)

Yeah, problem is that I havent researched Democracy yet... for now.. what should I change to? I can either be Republic, Monarchy or Feudalism... Republic has HUGE corruption... so I dont think I wanna do that

id say go with Monarchy myself, but roughly how many cities do you have?

Republic is best choice in this circumstance I would think, if you don't plan on waging offensive wars. Feudalism works best for tons of small teeny cities. Corruption on Despotism is THE ABSOLUTE WORST in the game. All over governments are better (ignoring Anarchy)! You've got to leave your Despotism. Plus there is the despotism tile penalty!

I use Republic for peaceful expansion and Monarchy for long drawn out series of wars. It is possible to wage offensive war with Republic effectively with good luxury supplies to suppress war weariness, but it might wind up costing you more money than Monarchy due to the need to divert your slider to luxuries when at war. Plus the unit upkeep cost is higher for republic once you cross your free unit threshold. Monarchy makes less commerce to convert into taxes, science or luxuries, but has no war weariness and you can use military units to suppress unhappiness via garrisons.

Study the civilopedia on governments. You should understand:

"free unit threshold" how many free military units do I get based on the number of towns size 6 and under, cities size 7-12, and metropolises size 13+?

"despotism tile penalty" with Despotism as government any city tile making more than 2 of a resource is penalized by 1, so a square that yields 2 food yields 2, a square that yields 3 is penalized to 2 (no difference!) and a square that makes 4 food is penalized to 3 (finally 3 food!) Another reason Despotism is so awful late in the game! Early in the game before you've even irrigated, this makes little difference, but it will really cripple your ability to use workers to enhance your cities by the middle ages because irrigation will be useless on most squares.

"war weariness" some governments like Republic & Democracy produce unhappy citizens whenever you're at war...even with defensive wars (eventually).

and so on....

The effects of government are far-reaching and multifaceted in this game...

Republic (though don't be as aggresive as you used to be)

If you're really aggresive then switch to monarchy.

No!! NEVER change to Monarchy unless you have come up with a special strategy for it. Always change to Republic, then Democracy if you are religious. You might also need to change to Communism late in the game if you are really huge and don't care about research (i.e. you're about to win anyways).

Republic does not have "huge" corruption, it has less corruption than Despotism, Feudalism, and Monarchy. It also provides you with the trade bonus. It is the best government for peace and war, IMHO.

Hmmm. Did you check your production / tax income also?

Corruption / waste is calculated as a percentage of your production / tax income.

I think it goes up from 111 to 200 because you're producing much more!

Though I am by no means a Civ "master" I still would also have to say switch to Republic. (At least, as others have said GET OUT of desp!) Once in a republic things will eventrually even out, it won't work out for the best right away.
Also, you should TRADE as much as you can. A LOT of times you can get some good gpt for resources and/or luxuries, this gpt helps a lot when you aren't making a lot of money from your cities.
Also in Republic you need to make sure that your cities are growing (roads connecting cities, irrigation and mining...articles in the "War Academy" are VERY helpful), as well having marketplaces, courthouses, banks etc in Republic is a MUST.
I notice on your first screenshot you have some cities set to "wealth" have them build a military unit to take to another city and disband, in order to help build your current "improvement".

Also, which level are you playing at? I would assume if you are truely a newb you would be playing at Chieftain? (I hate assuming :) ) IF you are playing at Chieftain level then you will find that "loosing money" doesn't really effect your game play. For the longest time I didn't worry to much about negetive income, and concentrated mainly on other game concepts, basically I took it one step at a time. Sometimes it seems to overwhelm you if you try to understand the whole game all at once :)
As I stated above the "War Academy" on this website is GREAT in learning all facets of the game :goodjob:

Like kcwong said, the absolute number of gold lost to corruption will increse in Republic, because you produce much more. When you earlier had 175 gold of 381 lost to corruption (and 206 uncorrupt gold), you now will have something like 200 lost out of 600 (guesstimate), giving you a huge boost in income.

The thing that might have made you overlook this fact is that in Republic, you have to pay upkeep for your military units. A typical beginner's mistake is to have huge numbers of defensive units being idle in your cities, and these might cost you a lot of money.

If you want some more in-depth advice on your game, I'd suggets that you post a save of it in the strategy forum and ask other players to have a look at it. Remember to mention what version you are playing (C3C i guess).

If you scroll down to the bottom of this page, you find a link 'upload file'. You can put your *.SAV on the CFC server.
(don't confuse this stuff with the reply box attachment feature you used above for your pics)

Then link to it in your post, like

http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads6/my_file.SAV

That's it.:)
