View Full Version : Completely new Nuke animation

Well I said I would redo this, but I had no idea it would be this soon and using this method. Instead of an original redo, the new files (yes, files, as in the plural) are a conversion from the game Command and Conquer: Red Alert 2 using a program I stumbled upon. So now the excellent nuclear explosions from that game can be implemented into civ3!

There's two animations, as explained in the included readme, a large explosion and a small explosion, since the game did provide 2 versions. I'm also including the sound that came directly from the game which works great with the animations, sort of obviously.

The original file (my first, despite being hopelessly outdated) I will keep just for old time's sake, but the new converted animations are what I was aiming for from the start. As usual with me, now, I'm attaching an animated preview, of the large version, but note that the preview quality is much lower than the actual animation.

File:
ICBMBomb (http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads9/ICBMBomb.zip)

Enjoy! The Preview is attached, the original file attached here was incorrect, so use my post below if you want the old version for some strange reason.

EDIT: For all those who I hope have not been waiting all this time for that futuristic battleship I was saying would be done in a post of mine lower on this page, obviously that model was abandoned but I will do a much better redo (that'll be finished) sometime, maybe by Spetember I'll be finished the other stuff and finally get back to that.

Welcome to CFC :band:

Create a preview. If it is smaller than 100k, you can attach it just like you attached the file. If it is larger, you need to use the Upload File option at the bottom of the main forum page. Follow the instructions there to upload, then place an IMG tag in your post with the address of the preview.

EDIT: By the way, the archive is supposedly corrupt (unexpected end of archive), so I couldn't create a preview for you. It could be just me, but you should check your file.

No, I got the incomplete archive thing too.

Downloads just fine, but the zip file won't open.

Try again - one can never have too many different kinds of explosions.

Sorry, I tried to put the file in using the attachment feature but it's to big, so I'm using the upload file thingy. Hope this works!

Here it is:

It looks very promising. Just make the mushroom cloud more smoke-like instead of a solid shape.

Looks like an explosion at a marshmellow factory... cool! What'd you use to make this?

Jan 05, 2004, 03:24 PM
Yes, I need to know what you used to make this. It looks very good. I do think it looks a little solid, but it's still useable. Great. Just tell me what you used!!

Looks great! If anything I'd suggest that the white flash at the beginning lasts longer. Other than that it looks good.

Here's an animated preview:

I downloaded it, and trust me, it looks a lot better in the FLC, then the GIF.

I used gmax to make the model and textures. In game it looks quite a bit better than in the preview (still gets the idea across though. Thanks GEChallenger for making that preview for me) In a lot of nukes, the plume at top actually doesn't get too cloud like until it starts to dissipate (I think, I looked at a lot of nuclear bomb pictures before I made this animation) Yeah, the flash at the beginning could be longer. I'll get an update for it a bit after I release my new unit.

Just to let you know, my new unit will be a MASSIVE futuristic battleship. Hope you like it when I release it!

Oh, this is so great!

Great work for a first post here, Orthanc! I'm going to use Firaxis' nuke blast for the tactical nuke, and yours for the ICBMs. :)

Great welcome, Orthanc! :goodjob:

It is good, but a little solid and dark, I think. Also, it's too fast in the game, or no?

Outstanding.
I'd appriciate much more if I ever played a game all to the Modern Age :)

Cute !!!! (if one can say that about an atomic mushroom ;) )

I'll have to see that in-game --- it will be reserved exclusively for the really big nukes ;)

Fine by me. By the way, expect a preview (of some sort) for some of my new units soon. I'll be making a new post for them though.

how do i add this because theirs no read-me and im a moron, and i liked the idea of usin this 1 for the icbms and keepin the normal 1 for the tacticals nukes.

LAW_FREAK
Jun 22, 2004, 06:33 PM
Genocidal, you can either replace it with the original nuke or icbm bomb anim. But make sure its the same name as the original or you'll have to edit the ini file, BACK UP THE ORIGINAL INCASE IT doesn't work!

It doesn't look too "cloudy" to me. It kind of looks solid from the GIF, and not the right texture.

Could some one post a pic in the explorer view and show him where to go.

Genocidal it will take a little while but once you get the hang of adding everything it is easy.

TO Genocidal: I don't have C3C, only PTW, but I am assuming most of the file directories and unit animation names are the same (at least for the default unit art). Go to "Art\Units\ICBM\" and then BACK UP the original "ICBMBomb.flc" first (you may want it later). After that, put the explosion animation file in that folder, and rename it "ICBMBomb.flc". That should work...

BTW: Nice animation, although it does look quite a bit like a litteral 'mushroom cloud'. A bit more transparency and it would be fantastic...

I wonder what happened to Orthanc.. Anyway, my beef is that it is too Big. I understand what he was going for, but the thing isn't centered and looks funny :/

In this case I sugest making a gradual upgrade chain of nukes: i.e. start with V2 Nuke missiles with about 6-8 range tiles then go gradually increasing ranges until you rech the icbm with 36 (or so) range- keep this nuke animation for the next step: the Planet Buster which should have unlimted range...

Plenty of stuff to chose from in the process, also check Krazenbyk's (spelling?) rockets...

Old missiles like that Polaris don't work in C3C -- the animations are upside-down. They need to be redone/updated if you want to use them in C3C, unfortunately.

Too bad, because it's otherwise a VERY nice looking missile.

well, civgeneral said something about wanting to update it a month ago- though I only know one missile expert who has been able to edit oversized flics

I think it would be really cool if we could control the nuke's power (i.e. 10 mt, 20 mt, 30 mt, etc...), and the strength would control the percentage of the population that the nuke kills, the damage to the terrain, and the effective area of the blast... But of course, I'm just dreaming. Unless Civ 4 includes that (which I doubt it will).

Anyone tested ANY of these explosions in-game? Just tried out the H-Bomb flc -- looked great in the preview, but it only shows the first frame when you use it in-game.

Now, I used this as a regular "Victory" bombing animation to save some time ... do nuke attacks allow for different animations? I have not used these explosions flagged as nukes.

Goldflash
Jun 24, 2004, 02:49 PM
The nuke explosion works fine for me, Gorn

And Viking, you could do that with the PlanetBusters SMAC... Deppending on what kind of Generator it had, the Nuke got bigger

gorn
Jun 24, 2004, 03:05 PM
How are you using it? Flagged as a nuke? It doesn't work as a regular bombing explosion.

A Viking Yeti
Jun 24, 2004, 04:15 PM
TO gorn: If you try it as a nuke and it still doesn't work (i.e. freezes on frame 1), you could try exporting and reimporting it through FLICster (the latest version). I had this problem with a unit I made; sometimes the animation length (in seconds) gets set to 0 (on older versions of FLICster), and it just stops on the first frame... If the animation time is correct, sorry, I don't know what to tell ya.

TO Goldflash: Hmm... That sounds cool, but I don't own SMAC. Is it a free download on the net, or a commercial game? Thanks for telling me about it too.

Sorry for dropping off the planet for like a year, I have been checking in more frequently recently. My battleship that I mentioned will have to wait until I can get a proper 3D program again (hopefully soon) along with any update for this.

I realize, a year later just how solid this thing is, luckily about three months of extensive skill building has hopefully given me the chance to do much better on my next atempt.

My main goal originally was, as the thread suggested just make a completely new nuclear explosion animation. Hopefully someone else out there is trying to do the same thing, I'd really like to see some variety. Also I realize this is huge, but I wanted it to be. Unfortunately I'm not sure how to center it. At this point anyone is free to edit this as they please, since it's such an old version (not that any new ones have come out, yet)

Just for future reference, this thing was made with one of the earliest FLCster versions and I don't remeber the original frame speed, but it shouldn't be zero. Also it was made for the original Civ 3, just keep that in mind future downloaders!

The moment I get my 3D modelling program (A version of 3D Studio Max for sure) EXPECT (no guanantee's here) me to start putting out a few new units, I've got a heck of a lot of ideas and a descent amount of time, just no program, yet.

Yep, so that's my come back spill.

I know, other people said the same thing a few months ago, actually more like a year ago.

As you can all see I ended up using POV-Ray as my unit making program, so the re-do of this will be done with POV-Ray. But currently I've got a whole lot of other stuff I'm working on so this will have to wait.

Yes there is reason to the madness of bringing back an over-half-year-old-thread, since while was rendering my most recent unit (the Highwind, the death animation for it is taking a PAINFULLY long time to render) I found the time and the means to convert the nuclear explosion animations from Command and Conquer: Red Alert 2 into civ3 format! Check the first post (which will be redone practically) for the file and more info.

Great! Dynamic Cloud Color! The only thing that could enhance this nuclear explosion would be a lighter colored "Shock Wave" of just the "Energy Circles" on the ground as they expand out. Good Job :goodjob:
