View Full Version : New info on Sid Meier's Pirates! Chris1111 Jan 06, 2004, 05:49 AM It's not a lot of info but it's something to tide over the pirate fanatics. http://www.gamespot.com/pc/strategy/sidpirates/news_6086103.html Raijer Jan 06, 2004, 02:34 PM It sounds pretty cool. I look forward to checking it out, as I've never played the original game, and heard many good things about it. CivCube Jan 06, 2004, 06:08 PM Is this game as replayable as Civ? Zamphyr Jan 08, 2004, 10:53 AM Originally posted by CivCube Is this game as replayable as Civ? Pretty damnn close. I believe the original 1987 version was the most ported game ever. For those that never played, you chose to start out as a pirate from one of four nations (England, France, Netherlands, Spain) in the Caribbean in one of 6 eras (from 1560-1680) on one of four (apprentice, journeyman, adventurer, swashbuckler) difficulty levels. Difficulty varied nationally between eras, ie. Spain owned almost everything early(1560) but very little in the last era. Very good mix of open ended play, short arcade gameplay events (swordfights, ship bombardments, etc). Basically, it was so open ended that it didn't matter much which nation you declared yourself to be from in the beginning. The goal was to become as rich and famous as possible, leading to promotions in the various national navies. In addition to getting promotions, there were many side quests: treasure maps bought in the tavern, looking for lost/kidnapped relatives, trying to capture other pirates/pirate hunters. As you completed goals, you earned pirate points to determine you final score. Your final score determined what you retired as : beggar, merchant, King's adivsor, etc. Quite simply, until GTA, no game came close to the free form playablitiy of Pirates. And if you can't tell, I'm pretty excited to see this sequel :D Smash Jan 08, 2004, 12:42 PM Don't hold your breath. Firaxis is making it.Look what they did to Civilization 3! Lol, well I actually prefer Civ 3 to Civ 2 so besides all the patches I'm not all that worried. And I pretty much like most of their games : AC, Gettysburg, Simgolf.... maybe I should change my nick to Fanboy  Cilpot Jan 10, 2004, 09:56 PM For me this is the most awaited sequel since civIII. I really cant wait :D For those interested, check out the pirates link in my sig :) |
