Well, this is what Arrogant proposed:

Also please post your game preferences. Here's mine:

World size: Standard
Barbarian activity: Roaming
Land mass: Random
Water coverage: Random
Climate: Random
Temperature: Random
Age: 4 Billion
Difficulty: Monarch

And if I recall correctly, we all agreed to it. So who knows what the game generated for us.

@ Apricorn: Not to bring you down any, but this early in the game, score really doesn't mean much. That, and I did inherit this game, and am still trying to change it "my" way of playing.

@Dogboy: Ohh, my first ever Monarch level game, not that it really matters since all we have are human players. And Roaming Barbs - Whoops, shouldn't have sent that lone workers out to explore . . .

Well, I did just graduate from Warlord level, I am now on Regent Level.

Edit: I am really hoping this is Archipelago, and that I can have my own little island away from all those evil warmongers . . .

I like Apricorn's antics :D

Goober - the level does matter in that there are less citizens born content so city growth becomes a bit trickier..

Goober
Jan 31, 2004, 11:59 AM
Yes, this is a fairly humorous thread. Less Content Citizens, eh? Meh, just means I gotta get more luxuries, or use my Religious Ability to build Cultural buildings faster, and make my citizens happier.

I am gonna read up on Monarch level . . .

I completely agree with you. Enforcing Culture is very important, although NOT through Military Force, but through getting your borders to expand . . .

I am not a Warmongerer, but when the situation permit, I may have to undertake a bit of "Decisive Military Enforcement" of my own, and "Teach the Infidels a couple lessons" . . .

Since you are GMT-8, you add 8 hours to your time to find GMT time. So, 9:17 + 8 = 17:17 GMT. Consequently: I sent it to you around 15:00 GMT, you played and sent it 2 hours later, around 17:00 GMT.

Goober - here's a simple chart that shows the time zones for the world, as you can see Greenwich (England) is set to noon, and then you just step forth or back and count the difference.. (GMT is for Greenwich Mean Time). One thing to keep in mind is that GMT does not change with daylight savings, so you may find you move an hour compared to GMT when you switch daylight savings on and off.

That's really weird that it's not working, considering you are able to post here. Maybe you are on a friend's computer and are able to post here. If that is the case, then Arrogant can post the game here, or send it to your friend's e-mail if you post it here. ironduck
Feb 16, 2004, 10:00 AM
Goober - actually, a firewall will not prevent you from being infected with a virus. Firewalls monitor traffic, but virii attaches themselves to approved traffic, so they slip right through. You need a virus checker to monitor files that are transferred to your computer.

You can scan your computer for free through this website - http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

Arrogant - many link virii will attach themselves to all kinds of files, .sav files would not necessarily be excluded from this..

That said, I'm running Norton and it hasn't picked up anything.

Rubberjello
Feb 16, 2004, 11:09 AM
I was *very* briefly affected by the Welchia virus this last weekend. But Norton picked up on it right away and I cleaned my system. I made sure I didn't play any games, nor uploaded anything while I was infected. (I think my kids may have accidentally downloaded a patch for another game that included it.) We had our firewall running the whole time.

predesad
Feb 16, 2004, 01:01 PM
I am not the most knowledgable person about computers / internet, but I thought firewalls were mostly just to prevent people from hacking into your computer. I guess in that way it could prevent someone from planting a virus on your computer, but an infected file would slide right in without a virus scan to protect. I like using my yahoo account because I feel doubly protected, yahoo scans with Norton and I have McAfee running constantly.

Goober

for some reason i have found when disease strikes early from flooplains it always seems to do what it is doing to you ironduck, it keeps hitting several times. one game i had a size three city reduced to size one in two turns and then lost like 2-3 more citizens everytime it grew, just like you said. well, i would love to help you out, send me all your gold and technologies plus a couple workers and i'll gift you sanitation ... once i discover it in a couple thousand years or more

AFAIK, Winzip doesn't 'expire' in a non-functional way. It just displays a nag box reminding you to register but you can still use it. DVDs could always read CDs :)

Anyway, the reason I was zipping it was to protect it with a password since the Celts don't have one. I will keep posting it this way here and I will also send it unzipped via e-mail. Unless you don't care whether anyone else has the chance to see your save. If you receive the notification for the subscribed thread you should also get the save.

Who's the bad boy now ?

I believe something is wrong with DogBoy. He went away last weekend, army related training, and got home Sunday afternoon and played a few turns I know. He and I are in several PBEM's together, all of which seem to be stalled. Also, he and I have a 2 player game which we usually get 3-4 turns / day and he always plays one turn before work in the morning. I got no turn at all yesterday and no turn this morning. In addition there is a diplomacy mail unanswered. It is very unusual for him not to play turns, maybe his computer crashed or ISP or maybe goober passed whatever problems he had on to DogBoy, hopefully it is not a real personal problem.

EDIT:

I just received word from DoyBoy, his cable modem is down, cableman coming to look at it tomorrow. I think he is going to save some turns on a disk at work, play them at home, then can send them the next day from work, but i cannot guarantee that. He can't post here because this site has the word "fanatic" and his web at work has banned sites with words like that.

Most likely his mails got trapped in the spam filter of your mail service.. sometimes they filter entire domains, very annoying.

Dreafully sorry for the delay, I was cleaning my InBox, and found the E-mail. One would think that I would be able to organize myself over Spring Break, eh? I have just sent it to Apricorn, btw.

Yes, we would know who to blame, but would the game be faster ? :D I think that if someone bothers to check his mail and send a confirmation e-mail he could as well spend 1 more minute and play his turn...

RealGoober why don't you send it to Apricorn again just in case...

ironduck
Mar 23, 2004, 03:03 PM
Probably not, these 8 player games seem to be outside the scope of a random assembly, probably have to handpick people you know will be able to take their turn quickly..

Oh, btw I still only have a one pop city ;)

Turn 34 send along to Dogboy at 11:00 a.m. PST. March 24.

Hmm, someone has mixed up the saves ...
Just received the same save as I did 5 days ago. We´re currently 2430 BC, but I received 2470 BC. 2 players in line before I played already said either that´s the one they received or sent (Dogboy and RJ).

ironduck
Mar 25, 2004, 05:39 PM
Oh dear.. it would be alot easier if people would use the turn save name instead. E.g. 33a or 34c.. then we know exactly the round and the position, and there's no confusion counting 'backwards' in the BCs..

Goober
Mar 25, 2004, 11:04 PM
I think this is my fault. Let me dig up the save, and re-play it, and see if that solves things. Good idea about the naming system, i shall try to do that.

Why is it that every time you say that it turns out that you didn't send it after all ?

As for the patch, I've downloaded it and I'm ready to install it, but reports about multiplayer problems make me reluctant... Anyone had problems with normal multiplayer (not PBEM) ?

No, I definitely sent it. I got it 3/31/04 at 7:04ish AM, and sent it to Apricorm on 3/31/04 at 8:10 PM.

I don't have it, and I have a terrible memory, and I usually forget what I send and don't send, very annoying . . .

I don't mind patching, just let me know!!! I am afraid I haven't be paying much attention to the C3 section of this site mugh, and haven't been paying much attention to what is going on with the patches.

Guys, Due to the fact that Im not living at home at the moment, Im not going to be able to play a turn for a while. Im going to try and get Civ installed on the computer where Im at now, but dont know whether this will be in a few days or a week or two.

If you would like to get a temporary replacement in during this period, I'll understand.

Umm, it won't work for me. I think it has to do with the versions. I am still on 1.15, what am I supposed to be on? I hate to say this, but until we have cleared this up, we are stuck. Sorry, I have been too busy to keep up with the upgrades and updates.

DogBoy
Apr 14, 2004, 04:56 PM
Last I saw it was on April 3. I hate to be a mean guy, but it seems like one person is holding up the game. Even when they think it's not them, they finally realize that it is them. Maybe the game host needs to "trim the fat" and get this game going?

or maybe we should just trim the whole game

DogBoy
Apr 14, 2004, 05:49 PM
But why trim the whole game when you can just eliminate one person. Then the game moves ahead at a good pace.

ironduck

What person are you talking about? As far as I can tell the game has been delayed by various people at various times..

Arrogant
Apr 15, 2004, 03:00 AM
Maybe we should find who has it now and then proceed accordingly. I think that with one replacement (which we coulld get pretty easily), the game should flow along nicely again. Can I assume that Apricorn hasn't sent it to Predesad ?

DogBoy
Apr 15, 2004, 05:54 AM
hmm, Apricorn could have it. He said he would be out of town for a while and we could find a replacement for him. He's not the one that usually holds up the game but he might be this time. I say we find a temporary replacement for him and when he comes back he can have his game back. What we should do is the person that sent the game to Apricorn needs to send it to the game host, find a replacement, the game host can issue a new password, and we can get this thing rolling again.

Arrogant
Apr 15, 2004, 06:21 AM

No, we won't replace you, the replacement is for Apricorn. We have already decided we will punish you with in-game means :D

Meanwhile, can you send again the turn to Rocinante ? (jmot AT sprynet DOT com) ? You'll be sending it over there for the time being.

Rocinante, thanks for chiming in. I'll pm you Apricorn's password.
