View Full Version : Leaderhead Preview: Samwise Gamgee
Drift Jan 06, 2004, 09:01 AM I'll bring this out of the Lord of the Mods thread.
Face and hair is pretty much finished, unless I get crushing criticism outside the LotM thread. Clothes are my first test. They are Mursilis' medieval clothes and not really what I was looking for, but I can't find good props and I lack better copy/paste clothes.
Waddaya think?
Yoda Power Jan 06, 2004, 09:06 AM It doesn't look like his head and his body belongs to the same person. The body is too pale(or his head is too yellowish, you decide;)). Other than that he looks good:goodjob:, though a bit gay.
Straczynski Jan 06, 2004, 09:15 AM Well, since he'll be covered in clothes, you won't see much below his neck. :)
He looks fine, Drift!

Even though the movie trilogy offers us a great visualization of LotR, let's not shackle ourselves too tightly to that visualization. ;) (Besides, although he isn't a spitting image of Sean Astin, there's IMO quite a bit of him there.)
mrtn Jan 06, 2004, 09:20 AM The shadows of Mursilis and Sam doesn't really match. The lightning also doesn't fit between Sam and the background.
I like the cutting of the background on the right the most.
It looks good though. :) (I'm a hard critic sometime, I know.)

Yep. It's on my to-do list if I decide to go with them. (clothes are just a quick preview of what the final product would look with them.)
The lightning also doesn't fit between Sam and the background.
Tough. I choose being able to see his face over the lighting matching. :D

That's the one I'm using. The left one is older.

If there's something to be said, I prefer hearing it over niceties. :)

I read it at least five times and didn't understand it. I still don't.
Care to reiterate? I seem to be running slow today. :)
Edit: Now I got it. I do run slow. But like Straczynski said, you won't see much of his torso.

Care to reiterate? I seem to be running slow today. :) ok I mean his head skin look different than the the skin on the rest of the body, thus making it look like a head from one person and a body from another.
btw could someone else tell if they understood the sentence? Im trying to make my english as readable as possible;)
edit-ok you get it:)
hetairoi22 Jan 06, 2004, 09:58 AM Nice looking leaderhead. :) There haven't been made alot of stuff to fit the Hobbit world etc. Keep up the good work with your LHs! :D
Yoda, the sentance was fine, though "belongs" should be written without the "s". Remember that the "s" is only put at the end of a verb in 3rd person singularis (correct me if I'm wrong). :p Shouldn't make the sentence misunderstandable (is that even a word?), though...
Kinboat Jan 06, 2004, 03:22 PM Looks pretty good... Maybe a little too much like a greek god but I don't know how you could fix that aside from adding a little fat to soften the hard chiseled features. Specificly the chin.

Good point. I'll see what I can do. :)
tjedge1 Jan 06, 2004, 04:35 PM I like the lighting. It appears he has a candle light in front of him and the light source to light up the background behind him. Like he might be holding a candle or standing in front of a small fireplace. ;)
Unexisted Jan 06, 2004, 05:29 PM Good, but maybe his eyes shouldn't be pushed in. :)
Kindred72 Jan 07, 2004, 01:03 AM Perhaps make his neck a little thicker?
Drift Jan 08, 2004, 01:47 AM Thanks for the feedback everyone. :)
I've got him rendered and this time it looks good. First render took 15 hours because of the hair laying shadows. Result was horrible as his forehead was full of rapidly moving dark blotches. The only gripe I have about this second render is that he doesn't blink - got frustrated with Poser when doing that, Gael's tutorial seems to have something on that, gotta read on it.
What I really need now is feedback on the clothes. I'll check the Civ3/PTW/C3C leaders one more time, but last time I looked, the Mursilis' clothes you see in the first post were all I found. Are they ok if I don't come up with anything better?
Here's a preview of what the finished product looks without the clothes:
embryodead Jan 08, 2004, 03:16 AM Why can't you use Poser clothes? There are some free ones too.

Couldn't find any good ones. Plus I'm still a little confused with them. Sam is based on Poser5's Dan and am I correct that there is no way to use clothes made for other models like Michael?
Copy/pasting feels more natural to me, guess it's my background with leaderheads. I know it doesn't give always as good results and the shadows won't move over the clothes, but I feel they are in other ways more flexible as I'm not confined to (often the wrong kind of) props made by other people.
Drift Jan 08, 2004, 05:13 AM I have many virtues but patience is not one of them.
I finished him with Mursilis' clothes. http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=74623
embryodead Jan 08, 2004, 06:13 AM It's nice with Mursilis clothes :) though experiment with poser clothes later, it gives good results because ie. you can also move torso a bit, thus create more dynamic effect. It's true that majority of clothes out there are for Michael, though in case of leaderhead it's not much of a problem. It won't conform, but you can just place the jacket/cloak in place of a torso (turn off the torso if it sticks out) and parent it (to torso). Incompatibilities won't show up since you only work on upper torso and head.

It is possible to use Michael clothes on Dan its just difficult to get them work well together, often cutting and pasting is easier and less time consuming. Why did you choose Dan? I find the daz3d models to have more options and expressions than the Curious Labs ones.

Because I'm a clueless newbie. I'll do the next one with Michael.
I'll try the 3d clothes, embryodead, thanks for the tips. :)
Kindred72 Jan 08, 2004, 12:21 PM Hope I'm not too late with this Suggestion, but perhaps you could make his "angry" a little more....well.... Angrier.

Well, you kinda are. :)
But you did make it in time for the possible future update. ;)
