View Full Version : Civilization III Fixes (PLEASE READ)
Sherpafoot Mar 22, 2002, 07:11 AM I have 2 problems with the editor:
1.) The Edit Rules Panel is too big and I can't see all of the fields available for edit. The bottom of the panel stays hidden even if I drag the title bar all the way up.
2.) Saving the changes to the rules. I tweak some of the rules and there's no Save function that I can find. When I go back in the rules are still set at the default parameters.
In addition, where can I find a version of the 1.16 patch so I can compare it with 1.17?
"Greg, we gotta do this thing tomorrow. We're almost outta booze."
RomeoTDnH Mar 23, 2002, 07:59 PM I really hope to find help. Keep getting an IPF at 0167. I have spent a couple hours on the line with technical support and nothing seems to fix the problem! I have updated all drivers, played with Virtual Memory Settings, Disabled all other programs at startup. It still always crashes at the end of a turn after all other Civs take their turn and My cities are building whatever they are working on. It happens in any game i start, well into the game. One game its at 110BC another its at 730BC 16 Civs. Another game with only 4 Civs.
After speaking with a friend about my problem He suggested its a Stack error and Game Design Flaw. I also believe this to be the problem but technical support will not admit it! If it is..will a patch fix it at some point or am I doomed to disappointment. I recently found this website in hopes of correcting my game error and am looking forward to some of the Mod Packs. Please Someone help me Ive fallen and i cant get up!

zozz Mar 26, 2002, 10:28 PM Hi.
I'm playing a game with more than 8 civs. How do I get the rest to come up on the diplomacy screen?
If you can help me, that would be great!
Thanks,
zozz
Exile_Ian Mar 26, 2002, 11:12 PM You can only show 8 at any one time, but you can choose which civ occupies a given spot by holding down shift and righ-clicking (which should give you a drop down menu of all civs currently not shown).
If one of the spaces is blank (as in your case) just hold the pointer over the space and you should get a yellow circle - then just do the shift-right click as above.
You can also use this feature to swap positions of civs (i.e. swap one out and then in again somewhere else). I often do this so my allies are near the top and enemies at the bottom.

I'd been shift-left clicking.
GaryNemo Mar 30, 2002, 02:07 PM RomeoTDnH,
I had a similar sort of problem -- I started a new games and it crashed at about the same situatin as the prior game. In my case, when I discovered Iron.
I called the tech support number in the manual, listened to all the messages such as to build a Courthouse, paid attention and eventually got a nice human -- once I had convinced the computer that I had heard all of its messages (a speakerphone is a useful tool here).
I asked for the email support address. I submitted my problem, with save files, and after a couple days got back a useful response. The instructions were very detailed, to uninstall, run defrag, carefully wash the CDROM -- you need to go thru all of this and get your own copy of their instructions.
When I had done it, my game worked, and I was able to resume my stalled games.
It is unfortunate, but this indicates the Civ3 installer also has bugs. It is capable of copying files incorrectly to the hard disk, instead of verifying that all files were copied correctly. A heinous bug, if you ask me, but fortunately correctable. Unfortunately, the corruption problems seem not possible to overcome.
Xiahou-Dun Mar 31, 2002, 08:48 AM Nevermind. Delete this post.

I had the same problem.
I cured it by reinstalling CIV3.
It is annoying if we are going to have to reinstall the game every time a patch comes out.
W.i.n.t.e.r Apr 14, 2002, 06:39 AM Hi people,
Hmmm what a fairly well sized thread (I wonder why  )
I hope sb. can give me a hand with this:
- I ve been playing for some time (1970s) now- the AI has made its turn, my automatic building moves start:
- just built my academy, almost exclusivly military units being completed in the building slots, quelled some resisters i one city...
- Then what happens is that the programe begins to load sth. (?) and comes up with yet another RANDOM CRASH:
CIVILIZATION3 caused an invalid page fault in

I had crashes with Civ3 before, usually related to mods in use- not the reason in this one though- I have also experienced crashes when some procedures seem to overlap (had to get the AI to declare war to change their building slots, and the like to unscramble this mess)
My question: Has anyone ever come up with a solution to this #*@§$&ß ????? Everything is up 2 date (including the last patch)
:(
Lunlupus Apr 15, 2002, 02:38 AM So has anyone else seen the fighters flying backwards yet? I have a game going where, when one of my bombers is intercepted by a japanese fighter the game apparently freezes momentarily (20-30secs) and then I get the amusing sight of watching the jet that just blew my bomber away retrace its route *flying backwards*.Like someone is cleaning up a stack of images, but forgot to not show them while they're deleting. Also have a freeze up if one of my jets flying "rule the skies", or whatever that is, actually intercepts an enemy fighter...BANG...froze up solid. I *think* that is what is occurring since when I take the jet out of rule the skies mode the freeze no longer occurs and the enemy fighter merrily bombs away at me. :crazyeye:
And why is it that the AI's jets actually have an affect when they bomb, but mine never do?
And man, the viciousness of the AI - it took me 15 veteran modern armour attacking from a fortified hill position to clean up 8 unfortified enemy armour sitting in the open unfortified on a frickin' plain(I lost 9 and had 7 seriously wounded).
howling indignant,
regards,
L.

mister blaster Apr 27, 2002, 08:41 AM Hey,
I have been getting a civilization3.e.exe error almost everytime I run the game now. I didn't have any problems before, but don't know what may have started causing this error to occur.
When this message pops up, it says the game needs to be restarted. I have installed both patches released by firaxis/infogrames.
Has anyone else had this problem?

I have had this problem, though mine is just civilization3.exe, no extra e. I THINK it may be related to mutual protection pacts. I'm going to try that theory out sometime, whenever school isn't trying to kill me.
Is yours caused when you attempt to go to war with another civ? I am the Americans, trying to declare war on the Japanese. The error box pops up, and the game crashes to the desktop. This is different from other horror stories, because I am the one that's starting the war, NOT the AI.
Firaxis emailed me a while back, telling me that they aknowledged this problem, and are working on it. Keep emailing them though, that's the only way they'll fix it.
Btw, I now have 1.21f installed, and this has happened with every single patch so far. I just open up the same saved game and try it on every patch, with the same result.
Zozz
Vonotar Apr 29, 2002, 01:47 PM Installed the 1.21 patch... now when I double click the Civ3 icon nothing happens other than a bit of hard drive noise, no error message, but equally no game!
Yes I own a genuine CD
Yes I have tried totally uninstalling and re-installing.
The game runs fine until I install the patch...

sixtyseven May 02, 2002, 03:17 PM Hi,
I've been reading most of this thread and found people with similar problems to mine. The game crashes every time I take diplomatic action or when a city revolts, comes back to normal and revolts again. This happens mostly after several thousand years of playing.
:crazyeye:
Game-years, of course...
One other thing, I own an international version of Civ3 and there are no patches available. Does anyone know if there will be any? Does anyone care? Should I go back to playing Civ2?
Please help... :(
MiDEvIL May 06, 2002, 05:38 PM Wow the msconfig thing actually helped! thanks sk0tie :)
deltablues May 06, 2002, 05:57 PM What the hell is the point of a patch that promises tons of fixes and speed enhancements if it causes the freakin game to lock up or crash for a dozen different reasons every time you try to run it !?!?!
1.21f Sucks a BIG One... And from what I can see of all the complaints in here, it looks like your 1.17 patch was just as crappy.
You guys at Firaxis/Infograms/Whatever should either go back to college and retake to programming classes you slept through.
Or better yet, why not just go to work for Bill Gates. He also releases software that should have never gotten out of Beta. Then he lets his customers do all the troubleshooting of his crappy products for him.
Sound familiar...?
GenAuckinleck May 08, 2002, 03:01 AM Ok, here's the deal. I have never had Civ3 crash on me from opening the box the day it was released through 1.16f or 1.17f. Last week I reinstalled and updated to 1.21f. I played for over 20 hours no problem. In the past three days, every time I play, it locks up. I load my auto-saved game, do to the crash, and about 5-10 min later...Lock up. I disabled sound, updated all my drivers, ran windows update, and still no dice. I even uninstalled and reinstalled. So I am somewhat discouraged with an excellent product I never had problems with.
My system config follows (taken from DXDiag):
Win XP Pro (5.1 build 2600)
PIII 700 Mhz
384 Mb RAM
Directx 8.1 (4.08.01.0810)
Geforce2 GTS/Pro 64 Mb vers. 6.13.10.2832
SB Live! Sound Card (latest Driver)
Any help would be appreciated...Thanks again.:(

I also have experienced the freeze up when my fighter tries to shoot down an enemy plane. (v1.21f)
I know there was a problem in earlier versions with human players not being able to successfully perform air superiority missions. This was supposedly taken care of by an earlier patch. I'm curious if this is a relapse of that problem or something entirely different.
Is Firaxis aware of the problem?...any progress toward a fix?
Sk0tie & Dan: Thanks for the help so far! It's greatly appreciated. :goodjob:

you now, that sounds exactly like the problem i am having. The game randomly crashes at 650 BC. Except the fix is the opposite - if I declare war then the game does NOT crash. 7 or 8 turns later... CRASH.

Pembroke Jul 01, 2002, 03:50 AM I don't know whether this has already been mentioned (tried searching with various keywords, didn't find), but here goes:
Version: 1.21f
Bug description: The AI does not check whether a city location can actually support a city before founding one.
Background:
Normally this is not an issue as the city square always produces at least two food which is enough for one citizen, so as per standard rules there is no need for a check.
However, last weekend I was building my scenario "Empires of Sand", which is based on the core idea of there being one huge desert with scattered oases and one big navigable river (e.g. like Egypt and the Nile). The premise is that civilizations are _supposed_ to fight for the fertile special locations and leave the desert an uninhabited hostile no-man's land. To force this I reduced the desert food output to zero. However, the AI:s didn't comply to my wishes :). Instead they started building huge numbers of size1 cities in the desert which was possible because of the 2 food citysquare production.
To counter this I raised the food consumption per citizen to 3 modifying the fertile tile (grassland, plains, etc.) food output accordingly and everything seemed working fine. No cities in the desert except where they bordered more fertile tiles, which was ok.
But, but... when I later reviewed the history record I noticed that all of the AI civs kept trying to found cities in the desert. All game long and continously. Every desert city starved to death and disappeared at the same turn it was built, but the AI kept on trying wasting settlers and productions.
Shouldn't there be an AI check whether a location can support a city?

In my house i make a point to test drive every car before i drive them and to sample c.d.'s in order to not buy one hit wonders when it comes to music. as well as download pirated copies of games and make sure they are playable more then once.(been burned way too many times on games i get bored with fast)... Firaxis has made a great game here so i bought myself a legit copy even though i could have played this game illegally for ever. My point is this WHY ISN'T there a DEMO version of this game?
I like to support companies that create great games in order to encourage them to make more. I really hate the road of finding myself a illegit copy in order to find out if the game is all it claims to be.
This subject came to my mind while i was reading page 2 of this thread when the discussion of bypassing the security on the game.
Good job Firaxis now for the multiplayer version please please please:goodjob:
peso79 Jul 16, 2002, 08:10 AM Not sure if this is a patch issue or a game issue, but on my most recent game the "View Spaceship" screen stopped working after the last piece of the ship was built. When I hit F10 to launch, the screen will halt for a few seconds, the hard drive will run, and then the game proceeds as before without showing the spaceship view. All victory conditions have been enabled, so that's not the issue.
Anyone have any clue as to what's going on? I haven't run into problems with the game for seven months now. I've got the 1.21f patch. Specs on my computer can be provided, but it doesn't appear to be any kind of driver problem, since everything else works normally. :(

Okay, here's the problem. I'm sure it has o do with the fact my ol' motherboard is about to give out... Anyhow, I'll be playing just fine and dandy for awhile when the drum-like conformation sound begins to repeat endlessly, usually while on the diplomatic screen. After this, the game usually locks-up within a few seconds or so.
Also, a related tidbit. If you start the game in a resolution below 1024x768, the game will reset the resolution like it should, but the task bar ends up floating around in the middle of the screen... Quite weird, anyhow.
Thanks in advance if someone help me out. :)
Coollizy The most common problem for a computer to respon like yours is DIRT,DUST ETC.ETC.
If you are alright with opening your own computer clean off your CPU heatsink and FAN (Don't worry happens to us all). DO NOT USE A VACCUUM!!!.. go get a compressed air can and it should blow all the dust outta there.
What is probally happening is that the CPU is overheating and in order to protect itself it shuts down b4 any real damage can be done.
You can also take it to a service shop and just have them clean it.. I would have a hard time doing this cause every time i walk into a computer store i spend too much money on upgrades.
Failing to do this can cause other parts of your computer to fail shortly after.. needs to be done soon
HighCouncil Jul 31, 2002, 02:01 AM SO...I shouldn't blame Infogrames or Firaxis for that ****???
Let's talk about this "cool" 1.21 patch...
Multi bug fixed...Civ3 is JUST single player, so WHY fixing this bug???
THAT HURTS NOBODY ****ERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh, before I forget it, the compatibility...CONGRATULATIONS!!!!
I'VE NEVER SEEN .S.U.C.H. A. .S.H.I.T. BEFORE!!!!!!!!!!!!
And last, but not least, the SUPER support of Infogrames...
Listen..Perhaps, you live behind the moon, but the whole world konws, that Infogrames' "support" is !S!H!I!T!
And the editor...Now, THAT'S the best of all...
"We wanted to create an easy to use tool, whch could create playable and enyoable maps for the fans..."
Soooooooooooooooo.....really?????????
Without a minimap?
:rotfl: :rocket2:
O.K., perhaps I was too critical, but with SUCH A STRATEGY, you won't have fans anymore.
:(
O.K., when the next game is better, I promise, I won't blame you.
Jackanape Aug 02, 2002, 08:58 PM I know, I know, this sort of post has cropped up a million times, and I didn't want to have to ask again, but I'm left with little choice now.
I just bought myself a new and faster computer--an HP loaded with XP--and I'm excited about playing the game on a much faster system.
Of course, that's not really feasible right now. Th egame loads fine, and even generates the world fine, but as soon as I click to shut the "you have risen" screen to begin the game, it just plain shuts down. No crash, just no CivIII...
I've spent the majority of the week looking through this forum, trying various fixes, to no avail. It may be that the fix is here somewhere, but I'm tired of a week's worth of digging through old posts...
HELP ME PLEASE!
WarISgood Aug 05, 2002, 01:28 PM Civ 3 locks up when an fighter defends agaist me attacking thier city.
There are others who have this same problem, the only way to get out is to cntrl alt dlt, I totally reinstalled civ 3 and the saved game still had this same problem.
Everything else seems perfect, I dont know if this has to do with the new patch because I just started playing the game after months of owning it.
Help would be really nice because i cant play this game if this is going to happen, bombers seems too important a unit not to use :(
BTW im using the newest patch. I have no problems with any games, and I have alot!
pudd Aug 06, 2002, 12:27 AM I honestly cannot solve this font problem. One thing I would like to poll amonst the individuals having font divide problems is the drive of their windows installation. I know that when I installed Windows XP I forgot that I had an NTFS drive already mapped and my whole map got messed up. So my windows partition ended up on drive "G". Good luck changing it now. :) A possible bug could be the font location is (semi) hard coded. Reason I think this is when your programming and you look to a location where nothing is you get 0. Hense divide by zero. Again I'm on an invisible limb here but I would like to hear back about the location of installs.
G:\Windows\
G:\Games\Civilization 3

Jackanape Aug 06, 2002, 10:16 AM OK. Somehow, it works...thankfully!
Here's what:
I didn't upgrade any drivers, there were none available.
I simply changed my refresh rate from 60 to 75 hz...and while it didn't work right away, I think it helped.
I used the selective startup in msconfig, eliminating all items from my startup group FIRST:
Then, uninstalled and reinstalled Civ III, after which it played fine. Then I installed the patch, and it played fine again. It should be noted that I rebooted between each install and uninstall step, and actually played the game in a clean "no startup items" environment, created by msconfig.
GL, all!
camthalion Aug 10, 2002, 05:52 AM Hi all,
I just downloaded the latest patch (1.29f english), but it won't install. I have the original game, no bloody copy. The installed version is 1.07. :)
When I try to install the update, it says "The file civ3v129f.exe is linked to the missing export-GDI32.DLL.DeleteDc".
Is the download file broken, or is something in my Windows damaged? I have Win98SE installed on a PIII 600MHz, 192MB RAM, TNT2 video card, DirectX8.1 installed. I recently had some problems with spyware but have deleted them all with Ad-Aware.
Thanks,
Camthalion
trk Aug 15, 2002, 12:06 PM The thing had been working just fine with no apparent errors of any kind. A previous game played through to the end with no problems. This game was working fine but can not get to the year 1500. At the end of 1495 the game crashes - just stops.
I have saved right up to the end and the last thing that happens is a Persian caravel moves and then ...........
There is apparently no way around it. There have been no changes made to the system.
It is xp pro but again there have been no problems of any sort and no changes at all have been made to it.
I am using 1.21.
Nor are there any messages whatsoever.
trk Aug 15, 2002, 02:34 PM however 1.29 did work and amazingly it is now the year 1500!
Tha Leader Aug 17, 2002, 10:49 PM ooh my god... thank you... u have no idea how many problems that fixed before the game ran very slow... but now well its just amazing... thank's again
Republic_Outlaw Aug 18, 2002, 08:09 PM When i start any game and as soon as I build my first city the game sais there was a error and will close.... So basically i cant play civ 3 :( :( ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRICIATED AND PLEASE TRY TO MAKE IT SOON IM DYIN TO PLAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:D
HarvardAce Aug 30, 2002, 04:10 PM Game running along smoothly. Then in 1090, I get to the end of my turn, hit the end turn button, and then I crash to the desktop with an invalid page fault in Civilization.exe
I've tried all sorts of drivers, have upgraded to Win XP Pro, and tried doing different things before the end of the turn -- nothing is preventing me from getting this error, however, and I cannot continue my game.
This also happened in a previous game of mine.
This is happening with Patch 1.29f. I have never had any problems before this patch.
I've attached my save game file -- if someone could load it and see if it works on their computer, then we know it's a problem with my computer and not the save game file or the patch itself.
stting Sep 06, 2002, 04:52 PM I know that, compared to other bugs in this thread, this is fairly minor.
Anyways, when I load Civ3, the opening movie plays fine (i.e. displays smoothly), but the sound stutters. Also, during game play, there are various artifacts that I can hear repeatedly. The artifacts can be fixed by fiddling with the PCI latency timer in the bios, but the stuttering in the opening movie is still there.
I have that latest patch for the game (1.29f I think).
I have the GeForce4 Ti 4200 with the latest omega drivers and the SB Audigy Platinum with the latest audigy drivers.
As I said above, I have tried fiddling with the PCI latency timer, but that doesn't affect anything with the intro movie.
I am running WinXP Pro.
The opening movie plays fine on my older computer (PII 266 w/ WinMe).
Any tips would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

When I attempt to play Civ III, it freezes at the Infogrames Logo Screen. Once it made it to the Firaxis Logo Screen before it froze. Please help!!!
Jamesds Sep 08, 2002, 09:28 AM This isn't a severe problem, but is certainly not convenient.
You know when you put the mouse over a 'hyperlink' which leads to the civilopedia and it turns into a hand? (Or atleast the manual says it does that) Well my cursor doesn't! It just disappears until I move it away from the link. I look in the Civ3/Art/ Directory and founf the cursors image, but the hand wasn't in there! There were four empty spaces. I think one is meant to have the hand. Could someone please send me their cursors file (actually called Cursor.pcx in the Art directory) to fix this?

Globetrotter Sep 25, 2002, 05:01 AM Hi all
I had the original version 1.07
I only installed an optical mouse for my PC
Eversince, Civ3 crashed and my PC rebooted by a simple mouse movement. All other games work perfectly fine.
Going back to my old mechanical mouse solved the problem.
Any luck here?
Thx
cavemanf16 Sep 25, 2002, 07:40 AM I too have an optical mouse (IntelliMouse Explorer from MS) and Civ3 frequently locks up on me, or will just go really really slow while playing the game. Then after a few moments, everything is back to normal. I'm wondering if Firaxis' has a problem with their implementation of DirectX calls that involve optical mice AND with the copyright protection schemes on the Civ3 CDROM? Maybe the DirectX calls get mangled by those two freakin' piece of crap "copyright protection" files that are checked against the Civ3 CDROM. I really hate all this copyright BS. Why not go after the real pirates - the Chinese - and leave us Americans who pay for our products alone. Geez!!!
Petetus Oct 02, 2002, 05:33 AM First of all, thank you Scotie and Dan for your help on this forum.
I've downloaded de latest patch, v.29f I think, but after installing It, when I try tu run the game, I get a "game CD" error, like I didn't have the CD placed on the CD driver. I own an original copy, and the PC is a brand new P4, with a LG DVD drive.
I thing it might have something to do with my copy being spanish. Is the patch only designed for the US version of the game?
Does anyone know anything about this?
Thank you very much.
Undead Scourge Oct 10, 2002, 11:59 PM When i try to load a scenario it goes perfectly fine until the dialogue box saying what your civilizations is eg; Militaristic and Scientific and the free techs the game crashes without any warnings or error messages, plz help me
RomeoTDnH Oct 16, 2002, 10:51 AM I have had the same problem with the game crashing listing an IPF at 0167 (win98se) dating back to when i first baught the game last January 2001. Tech support has been hurrendous in helping and quite frankly im sick of them. They always say the same thing, ie. update this update that, blah blah blah..its all BS! Nothing worked so i gave up. Then the new Patches came out i had new hope..guess what..still crashes at the end of my turn after my cities produce. So i decided to load the game on my other computer...WOW you know what..it crashed in the same way after like 100 turns at the end of a turn. I called tech support and told them..they said did you upgrade this n that? What BS! I have the same crash on 2 different computers completely in 2 different games in 2 different years! Both after like 100 turns or more.
Well i upgraded to win 2000 pro Uninstalled civ. Installed the brand new cd they sent me for 10 dollars installed the latest 1.29 patch.(yes all the latest drivers!) Played a brand new game(since the old saves crashed still!) and guess what? A crash back to the desktop in the year 290 BC after over 100 turns. Tech support asked all the same friggin questions! I asked them to load my game and run it sent them the game sav file and my rules. HE hasnt done it yet..claims he has been very busy with other problems...hmm...seems to me tech support cant help with anything thats actually technical? The problem is a poorly written editor and the game was sold before the bugs were out of it?
Anyway I have an excellent game id like to be able to finish but cant! How frustrating. Been getting the same TEch run around for 9 Months..they cant help?
This crash is back to Windows 2000 Desktop at the end of a turn. I am posting after reading of the SAME problem some of you are having. It seems to me we all have Athlons and most of US have the Nvidia too..Is that the problem? Or is the game flawed?
MadsEjested27 Oct 17, 2002, 12:47 AM at least you got a reply for techsupport I didn´t

I have the same problem. I hit the Civ icon, and a pop-up error appears like the CD is not in the drive.
The game starts eventually when I open/close cd drive repeatedly and launch the game from the autorun off the CD.
still, would be nice to click once and have it run.
Also, first thing the game does it automatically change my resolution. It that what it should do?
thanks
WarningU2 Nov 14, 2002, 11:01 PM Thanks Sk0tie for your help here.
Just wondering are you aware of any patch that InfoGames are working on to fix issues with GameSpy? According to GameSpy tech support
"I have checked with the programmers, the game maker has failed to implemenmt
the proper technology. At this time, the game is not playable on GameSpy Arcade
until they have made further changes.
Christine Henderson
GameSpy Customer Service-Technical Support
http://www.gamespy.com"
btw ... I think the game is great. I am not having issues with the game except for the occassional sound blip. I can live with it. However when I tried to host a game on GameSpy it crashed Windows XP SP1 and took a while to recover.

I do not have any of the issues which the above users have. But, did you guys INSTALL the damn drivers that came w/ the mouse? If you did Uninstall them. In my experiance the Drivers designed for this mouse have messed up my system performance and functionality. To use the mouse simply plug it in, and let your computer Plug & play with defualt drivers. this solved many of my issues with the mouse, includeing a similar one. This advice is based of experiance from about 8 months ago.

Governor Issue (Background):
Recently, (about a month before PTW came out) I re-installed Civ3, and I noticed I could let the Governor Keep track of City mood status for the first time ever. Woo! So I began using it, and was VERY satisfied with the results. HOWEVER Civ3 PTW has a BUG in this Governor Feature!!
Bug Description:
Randomly, the Civ3 PTW Governor will allow a City to go into Civil Disorder, it doesn't happen to often, but it happens at least 20 or 30 times per game I have played.
Not ONLY does it let the City go into Civil Disorder, it KEEPS the city in this state, instead of changing the population to take it OUT of civil disorder.
The ONLY way to get the city back to non-civil disorder status, is to lick the city in the city screen & say "yes let me manually manage this city" or w/e, once you do, click the city again, and as norrmally happens when you do this all the citizens pop to the right locations.
After that you may turn the governor back on, and it will function properly again. Please fix this most annoying bug.
**update** I have had the governor switch the city back to a Civil Dissorder citizen layout after doing this, twice on my capital city.
ALSO
Could we get a patch to add a "Build Military Improvements" option to the production manager of the City Governor? That would be nice, the City Governor will never build them otherwise. (e.g. Barracks, SAMS, coastal fortress etc.)
One more thing, WHY WHY WHY does my governor INSIST on trying to replace my nice non-polluting, Solar Plants with COAL plants and Nuclear plants?! I do NOT understand this; could you make a flag system to specify when a improvement should not be replaced, or to show an order of worth? So that a coal plant would be ranked say a hydro plant or a solar plant?. tnx! ~Q

Hey, I am experiencing a problem reinstalling Civ 3. I recently installed the game on my new cpu. I was having a few bugs, and decided that I had downloaded too many maps/patches/crap from the website.
I uninstalled the game and everything ran fine, it said that the uninstall was successful. When I went to reinstall, it runs the installshield but then pops up a window that says "Do you want to remove the selected application of all its components?" I said yes, thinking that something was left behind. It then runs a quick check then tells me that maintenance is complete.
I checked and couldn't find a trace of the game on my hard drive. On the add/remove files option under My Computer, it tells me that Civ 3 is still there, a 1.3MB file. I try to delete it but it won't work.
also i had the out of range problem and fond someone posted run with 75 herts on 1024*768 runs perfect now this

Philius Caesar Dec 12, 2002, 06:42 PM I need someones help with my copy of Civilization III. I got this game last Christmas (2001) and I immediately ran into problems with it saying "Out of Range" when I attempted to load the game. My monitor would just go blank and I would get that stupid error message. I'd still have music in the background so the game apparently loads but my screen was blank. So somewhere in there I talked to Infogrames and they, after a lot of attempts, helped me figure out what to fix and the game worked fine for a while. I then installed a patch about a year after and I was all messed up again.
Civ III is apparently supposed to operate with a resolution of 1024x768 pixels but I only have a monitor that works at 800x600. I tried Infogrames suggested fix, adding the line "Refresh=60" to the Civilization3.ini file but it had no real effect. Now I check out the readme file for the game and it tells me to try these various lines;
"KeepRes=1 - When set to 1, your desktop resolution will be what the game uses. 1024x768 screens will be centered, but you will be able to see much more of the map on one screen.
*NoSound=1 - Disables all sound in-game.
*Video Mode=1792 / Video Mode=1600 / Video Mode=1280 / Video Mode=1152 - Force screen resolution to one of these settings."
Anyway, I attempted to follow their advice by adding "KeepRes=1" to my Civilization III ini file and even "Video Mode=1792". I experimented with these add ons to the file and was able to get the game to load up but now the title screen pops up and is way to large for my little monitor. Can anyone help me figure out how I can shrink this thing down to fit on my screen? I know this game will work with my computer and monitor, I've had it working before.
bluenose Dec 12, 2002, 07:14 PM goto display properties

set it to 1024 x 768
then click advance

and set refresh rate at 75 herts
i had the same problem for the same amount of time and about 2 weeks ago i found that some one posted this somewhere on this site so thank him
and by the way id uninstall then load it again
DONT Reinstall
Philius Caesar Dec 13, 2002, 07:22 PM Hi, thanks for the advice but I really can't change the resolution my monitor works at. I tried changing my resolution to 1024x768 and my monitor blanked out and I had a heck of a time getting my monitor to work again. It doesn't look like changing the resolution is an option for me. Can anyone help me? See above message for what my problem is. I'll give you more information about my computer if that's what you need.
Phil
bluenose Dec 14, 2002, 10:59 AM try just changing the refresher rate to 75 hertz
if that doesn't work then try different herts
but like i said i had the same problem on the other hand i can chage the res so i dont know if cnging the refresher rate and only the refresher rate will work because as u can see from my new problem i cant play the game
do u have the correct monitor installed?
they say it doesnt work on plug n play or default as my comp. is but the above post is how i fixed mine
im no expert but try playing around with the refresher rates or install ur monitor again

history Dec 19, 2002, 07:45 PM HELP! Is this one of those fixable problems? I built the Alpha Centauri spaceship in Civ3(all 10 parts!). I wanted to launch it, but couldn't figure out how to get to the progress/launch screen. Then I realized that the little S button in the lower right corner means Spaceship Progress. But when I click it, nothing happens! Like I said, HELP! Please email me at starlingsrealm@hotmail.com. Thanks!
Chieftess Dec 23, 2002, 08:02 AM Are you sure the spaceship victory was turned on?
Pavan Sohal Dec 27, 2002, 10:42 PM CivIII works great! except for the end of EVERY turn, where there is a 15minute pause. The thing keeps playing music, but the map is no longer scrollable, the white direction arrows disappear, and all I can do is wait (I'm waiting right now). It's not a driver issue I don't think, the problem was there before I upgraded to the latest nVidia drivers (I was not using Detonators before), the sound is working fine, I've tried before and after patches, before and after expansion installation (I bought both at the same time...stupid me) but its the same every time. Please help. Tech support hasn't gotten back to me...I bought the US version in Canada (is this a problem?).
I'm running a PIII 1GHZ, with 128MB RAM (performance is not an issue...the pause is an idle period), and plenty of free space.

ixian Jan 01, 2003, 09:41 PM hi i have this problem
ok firstly where do i download PTW to?
to the infograms directory or...?
because currently i have 2 options/icons
one(the old civ3 icon) and next(the new PTW icon)
isit meant to b like this?or shouldnt the PTW files auto attach to the civ3 files?
and theres this thing..i aint sure if its a bug or otherwise
i can only "talk" to other civilizations by contactinig the leader of a unit....i can no longer talk with other civs by going to the F4 screen n double clicking...the game would go into illegial operation when i try to leave the negeotiation screen..not so when i use the first method
and another thing still:(
my game "closed" when it cant find the middle ages.ini file to load...
thats why i suspect i probably downloaded PTW to a wrong directory..or did i?
pls help..
sinann Jan 03, 2003, 07:29 PM My Civ III crashes. There seems to be a loop that is messing things up. It runs very slow and then crashes. I have been in touch with the Civ III folks who were very helpful but it still is sick. I have COMPLETELY uninstalled, cleared out the startup folder with msconfig, undone everything in the CTR-ALT-DEL thingy. It still has cyberflatulence. Someone suggested I reinstall Win 98 and clean off the disk. I would rather not 'cause I have a bunch of priceless photos to archive and put on my CDRW first. I have Norton 2002 and use it religiously (how can using Norton be religious?).
Could I have some malware damage I do not know about?
Does anyone else have such a %^&$$#@ plight?
I want to conquer the world again!

All i get is a black screen then the desktop with the win XP error message "civlisation3x.exe has encountered an error and needs to close"
i have changed my monitor driver

updated both sound and video drivers and got all recent windows updates
my computer specs are

K7VTA2 motherboard
512 DDR ram

highlorddave Jan 17, 2003, 06:44 AM Welcome one and all
in response to my last post, i believe the problem with my cv ptw not starting could be due to it not finding the civ3 files from the original game.
i copied all the civ3 folders (art scenario ect) to the ptw folder and it got a lot futher into loading than in normally does.
i have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the CIV3 again but no luck.
if any1 knows any way i could force ptw to find the files it would be welcomed, or if any one knows if i culd juct copy the required files to the ptw directory that would also be apprecited.
any insight on this that resloves the problem would greaty cheer me up
Good day to you all
Dave

Polo Jan 19, 2003, 10:30 AM when I launch the program I get the "loading" window, few seconds later the screen becomes blank, and than I'm shifted back to windows with the resolution of the video card set to 1024X768 (even if the resolution before was different). The application bar remains in the initial position and size, and the program is blocked.
My computer is a PII 350 with mainboard Asus P2B 320Mb ram and a Matrox G200 Agp video card. I have a monitor SONY CPD-100ES, the OS is win98.
I'm running Adaptec Direct CD V. 3.0.
I tried to load the program after having unloaded every resident program I have (such as anti virus etc..) except the Direct CD, and after having set the resolution to 1024X768. I tried to launch it after having downloaded the latest versions both of directx (9) and of my video card's driver. Of course I did not fix the problem.
I've discovered that the files on crash are: igl.dll sound.dll mss32.dll binkw32.dll and civilization3.exe.
The dxdiag fails the testfor Directx 8 with all the trivers that i've been able to find on the net.
Is there anything else I can do? do you know where can I find a good new driver?
Dygig Jan 19, 2003, 02:22 PM I received PTW for Christmas and found this in the readme file -
"NOTE: AOL users will find it difficult to join multiplayer games and impossible to host games. AOL is currently working on changes to make on-line gaming easier. Contact AOL as to current status and workarounds."
Needless to say, I contacted AOL and got zero response. Does anyone know what this is about and when this will be fixed. I bought this game for MP and have not yet been able to enjoy it.
No idea Jan 31, 2003, 03:18 PM When I go to load a game in civ 3 it goes to about 3% and then comes up with the message "DatalO system error:GAME". Then it says "unable to read file C:program files/civilization III/saves/" etc.
And when I go to start a new game it does the same thing but it doesn't come up with any messages.
When I go to laod a scenario it says "cannot load file the file may be corrupt!".
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!
can anyone help me! CIV3 IS MY FAVOURITE GAME BUT NOW IT WON'T WORK AT ALL! :help:
SUBLIMINAL Feb 02, 2003, 12:57 PM i use the patch 1.29v and the game will crash on my second or third move of the game....?? i always use civ edit to make a new senario and i always make a new govt.and civilization .....but when i play it on the second or third move it just exits the game...WTF...HELP ME ....
Chieftess Feb 14, 2003, 08:33 AM Can you give more information, like what you added? If it's a new unit, and the game can't find the directory/graphics, it will crash.
GreenPig Feb 25, 2003, 01:42 PM I've been reading through these posts to no avail. i don't even get as far as the CIV splash screen. I getthe Safedisc/Macrovision screen, the screen goes blank, changes resolution, goes blank again then changes resolution back to normal, and I don't get any error messages either.
Civ was working fine up until two days ago. Never had a problem. The only thing I canthink of is that I installed the latest Nvidia drivers. I've changed them back and reinstalled Civ (after trying all the updates etc).

Try out the modifs I've posted. I'm interested in getting feedback, as I believe infogrames have made such a mess of this thing that your mileage may vary widely from one translation to another.

LASERCHiPs Apr 08, 2003, 12:10 AM PTW ISSUE:
I be having an issue trying to load saved games...If I try to load saved game and it has been 2 or more days since I have loaded it before Windows XP crashes and locks the my machine. The game loads to 73% then Crash!!! :(
error occurs in the civilization3x.exe
Note: this occures only on my own scenerio All I did was add a couple of units that's it I don't see how this would effect the game.
This is strange I was just playing the game before the weekend all week I would save the game everyday and I could access it now after the week end ..NOPE!!
I am a computer technician (5 years) and I can't figure this out...Does any body have any ideas on wha't going on and what I could do to prevent this from happening again..
bulletsponge Apr 09, 2003, 04:17 PM Ive been getting this Out of snyc error...In the original Post here...Skotie says how to avoid this error...
If you encounter the "Out of Range" or "Out of Sync" message from your monitor, find out what type of monitor you have, and install the CORRECT .INF for your monitor. DO NOT use "Default" or "Plug and Play" driver from Microsoft, this is what is causing the problem. GO MICROSOFT!
However...I have no idea how to do this...I know my monitor...Hitachi CM801...
Funny thing about this Out of sync error...Im playing a Lan game with my brother...he NEVER gets this error...so it does lead me to believe its my monitor...and I ONLY get this error when bombing with one of my bombers...sum'in Id really not like to avoid if possible...:)
So...any help is greatly appreciated...:)
bulletsponge Apr 10, 2003, 07:58 PM Well...disregaurd my above post...I have since found a way around it...I simply turned off battle animation...so the bombing run doesnt display anymore...not causing any out of sync error...:)
Jamesds Apr 19, 2003, 04:10 PM I get a really annoying problem. On a civilopedia link, I out the mouse over it and no cursor appears! It goes completely invislble.
I have a PII 400MHz, 32Mb Cougar NVidia Graphics, 128Mb RAM, 512kb Cache, Win95. The game always works perfectly fine, it's never crashed, I've had it for nearly a year now. But why doens't this cursor appear? Is it a problem with a dll in Windows or something????
Please help, I've posted twice and never got any replies.
It's only really an inconvenience though. It can't be my Graphics card, cause I changed it at Christmas. Still same prob.
Oh well, better not take it for granted, atleast I can still play Civ3!
Firaxis never give any good tech help though. Do they. They just give you a sheet on the most common probs, not your specific one. :(
gbortz May 14, 2003, 09:48 PM I cannot get cruise missles onto my carriers. Do they have to be in a city? Also I have the scientific discoveries and still can't get nukes. What do you have to do to be able to build them? I have installed the latest patch but still no go with these issues. I run a 2.2 AMD, Geforce Ti4200 and 512 MB RAM.
RubberDucky May 25, 2003, 01:58 PM Spent the last 2 days reading the posts and can't find anything like this:
Getting the lockups that are reported alot, seemingly random, but seems tied to autosave at end of turn. Can play for anywhere from 30 seconds to 5 hours before it freezes and I have to hard reboot. Tried it with autosave on and off, still happens.
After reboot I try to load last saved game, get 'DataIO operation System Error:Tile' , then 'Load Error- Error Reading File...(then it lists the savegame file). I can load the PREVIOUS savegame, but eventually (usually sooner rather than later) it locks up again. The lockups then seem more frequent.
I've started about 10 games so far so it's not just one corrupted game.

umanwizard Jul 25, 2003, 01:32 PM Sometimes, for no apparent reason, my game will crash back to windows. I can always use the latest autosave, but it gets really annoying especially on long turns late in the game, where it only autosaves every turn. I think the disk may be scratched, but I'm not sure. If it is, how can I order a replacement disk, and how much does it cost? If something else is the problem, what can I do to fix it? I don't still have the proof of purchase, unfortunately.

Bop Aug 26, 2003, 01:27 PM Hi. I've just installed the PTW patch from CIV3.com (1.27) and it seems to have done strange things to my CD drive. The game runs okay without the patch but when it's installed everytime I try to run it says "Please enter CD and try again". Needless to say I have the CD in the drive. Any suggestions?
Thanks.

Blakerules2004 Sep 28, 2003, 10:06 AM  Says error installing iKernel.exe(0xa00) What do I do?
sk0tie Oct 16, 2003, 01:41 PM Make sure you log in as an Administrator. Most games won't install for other users as the game was designed to be compatible with previous versions of Windows that did not have user permissions.
Click on the Start Menu and select Run. In the Run dialog box, clear any text that may be in the field and type MSCONFIG and click OK. In the System Configuration Utility, change the system to Selective Startup and uncheck Load Startup Items. Switch to the Services tab and check the Hide All Microsoft Services box. Uncheck any services left in the list and Apply the changes. Reboot your system when prompted.
Empty your Temporary directories. The files within these folders are safe to delete, and will not cause harm or loss of data to your personal files. The files located in these directories are miscellaneous files from installers and internet browsing. These two folders are in C:\Documents and Settings\YOURUSERNAME\Local Settings\ and are named "TEMP" and "Temporary Internet Files". Don't delete these folders, just delete everything inside them.
Clean the CD with warm water and use a cloth towel to dry it. Do not use any paper towels or abrasive products that may scratch it.
Right-click on the My Computer icon and go to Properties. Switch to the Hardware tab and then click the Device Manager button. Expand the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers tree, and double-click Primary IDE Channel. Switch to Advanced Settings and set the Transfer Mode on both devices to "DMA if available" and click OK to close the window. Do the same thing for the Secondary IDE Channel. Reboot after these changes are made.
Try installing the game directly off the CD and see if that does the trick. Open the My Computer Icon, right-click on the CDROM and select Explore. In here you will find Install.exe or Setup.exe. Double-click this and the installer should start.
If that doesn't work, try copying the game from the CD to your harddrive by creating a folder on your desktop and simply copy the files on the CD to the folder on your desktop. Once you have them on your harddrive, reboot your machine and install the game from the files on your harddrive via Setup.exe in that folder.

KingMattRoe Oct 28, 2003, 08:20 PM Ok, I'm hoping this is a relatively common problem so maybe someone could help. I have Windows XP on a Pentium Processor with all the gubbins.
Whenever I try to play the game it will go to the screen before the opening movie and then nothing will happen and I'll be stuck at windows.
It may be that my video card because that is the only thing that I can't verify as being compatible with the game but if this problem has happened to anyone else and they know what to do I would be grateful.

Are you referring to the game starting up and the movie plays then locks up (during the Infogrames Movie), or does the game crash and drop you back to your desktop?

One game that I'm on is a scenario and always freezes at the same spot and only the game music continues uninterrupted. I can only get out by con-alt-del.:egypt:
gbright Nov 01, 2003, 10:01 PM I have read all the replies to your post and I have searched the news groups and the forums here. I find only one question regarding this particular issue.
When I open Civ3Edit the Edit Rules page is displayed large and out of frame. I cannot move the window around nor can I minimize it. As a result I can no longer edit any scenarios.
My system:
Abit MB with 900 MHz Thunderbird
768 MB PC100
NVIDIA TNT 4 with latest drivers
Win XP , latest updates
Diamond MX400 Monster Sound latest ESS drivers
Shamrock C809-D with the only drivers I can find
What I have tried:
Setting display to various levels - 800x600, 1024x768, 1600x1200,...
Reinstalling game
reinstalling OS
Formatting drive and reinstalling Win 98, then ME, and then XP
Any suggestions clues or assistance will be appreciated.

Jan Mistique Nov 05, 2003, 03:35 PM I have a couple of queries so hope someone can help. I have just reinstalled Civ III (US Edition) + PTW (bought in the UK). Previously I have had it all up and running with no problems. Sorry if either of these queries has been asked before. You must feel free to ignore or point me in the right direction. I have searched and not found an answer to the MP query.
I have installed the US patch 1.27 and when trying to run the game, I get an error messgae saying the disc should be inserted -when it is! I have reinstalled a couple of times and even tried the UK patch to no avail.I do not feel that the disc can be faulty as I have just successfully installed from it. Any ideas?
The other query is re MP and occurred before trying to install any patches. I have successfully played this for months. Now I can't take my playing partners with me into games that I host and can't see their games if they host. So, when I host, I go into the staging window, my partners join and I click on 'launch' and go through to the setup window. My partners are then kicked out. My two partners can play each other and both can either host or join so I feel that the problem must lie with me.
What has changed? Well, I beta tested but had Conquests in a separate file. However, it is since then that I have not been able to play MP. At the same time I installed a pop-up stopper but disabled both this and the firewall before trying to play MP. I have since uninstalled the pop-up stopper and all the Conquests files to no effect. I am vaguely hoping that Conquests will fix all this but cannot wait for it to come as it is coming from the US. Anyway, I am not really optimistic on this point!
My system is Windows XP, Pentium 4, 2.0 GHz, 256 Mb RAM, Soundblaster with fairly up to date drivers. :) I am registered at Gamespy although don't go into MP from there. I have tried this too but it made no difference.
KingMattRoe Nov 05, 2003, 11:16 PM SkOtie - it is just the single image of the Civ III Castle before the movie - the splash screen I believe it is called. That comes up over my desktop, without taking up the full screen, and then dissapears, as it should. However, the Civ III movie should start up after but it doesn't.
So, if anyone has any clues I'd be really grateful.
daufoi Nov 15, 2003, 06:50 AM Hello,

Marc1980 Nov 23, 2003, 02:00 PM Hello
I have civ3(patched v129f) and civ3 conquest. Around 270BC or later if I try to load a saved game I get the following message with all my saved games:
DataIO operation System Error: CTZN
Loading Error, Error Reading File
after this all of my cities dissapear. I started 4 games this weekend but I always had the same results.
I tried these
1, Uninstalled the game.
2, Scanned my computer with F-prot Antivirus.
3, Installed Civ3 again.
4, I patched civ3 with civ3v129f.exe
5, Installed civ3 conquets
6, Tried to install the game to another HDD.
Nothing has happened. How can I solve this problem?

Thorgrimm Nov 24, 2003, 01:35 AM Try not patching civ 3 before installing c3c i have a brother who had the same problem, but on a reinstall he forgot to patch the other versions and the problem went away! Since then the game has ran fine.
Cheers Thorgrimm
Marc1980 Nov 24, 2003, 04:09 PM Hello Thorgrimm
Thank you for your advice. I tried it(not patching civ 3), but unfortunately I got the same result.
Any other idea?
Marc
Thorgrimm Nov 24, 2003, 04:20 PM Sorry the only thing i can think of is something is corrupting your sav. files, is it only after that date or does the other saves before that time also get the same errors?
Cheers Thorgrimm
Marc1980 Nov 25, 2003, 09:20 AM Hello
Yesterday I was playing with the Maya civ, I saved the game around 200 BC , then I tried to load it back. Unfortunately I got this error message. I tried to load my autosaves , got the same result. I could only load 4000BC autosave, and one which I saved in 600 BC.
I also get the same result when I play a Conquest game(scenario).
When I had only civ3 with patch, this error occured mostly in the modern age (that time I had win98se, now I have winXP).
I have a motherboard whit via chipset If I change it to a nforce2 motherboard, will it help me?
Marc
Thorgrimm Nov 25, 2003, 12:38 PM no i don't think it is the motherboard something is occuring that is making your new saves corrupted. If it was your motherboard other software would be affected as well. I would bet it is something in Win XP, as i do not own XP i can't help you there. One question was XP an upgrade or did you reformat your drive and then install?
Cheers Thorgrimm
Marc1980 Nov 25, 2003, 02:07 PM Win Xp was an upgrade, I did not format the HDD. I will try that if I can't solve the problem in a week. But hope Atari will answer my e-mail, because I don't want to lose 40 Gb.
Civ3 runs without errors on your system? What kind of computer do you have? Maybe I should buy a new one and sell this one:).
Marc
Thorgrimm Nov 25, 2003, 02:19 PM It runs great, but a little slow as i only have a 500 athlon processor and win Millenium. The problem with XP is that it is based on the NTFS file system, which is basicily NT. As the other versions of Win ME, 98 they are FAT based and most games have to balance the os with the fact that most systems out there still use FAT versions of win. And with my experience with NT tells me that after a certain point in the game XP can no longer process the info into NTFS system files and it becomes corrupted. I don't know for sure but a lot of people have been having trouble running c3c on XP. Remember NT was up to service pack 7 to make NT compatible with most games as NT was designed as a business and server software. So knowing "Microshaft":D XP is going to need a lot of service packs to make it compatible with Fat based games. I don't know if i have helped at all, but i tried.
Cheers Thorgrimm
jimkirk Nov 26, 2003, 08:29 PM win xp works best if its a clean install
Marc1980 Nov 27, 2003, 02:32 PM Hello Thorgrimm and jimkirk
So you think I should format my drive c: then reinstall winXp and civ3. Will it surely help me? Well, I will give it try. For me it is really interesting, why I can run first person shooters on my computer without any problem and I can't run a TBS. Usually these kinds of games have no compatibility problems.
I sent a bug report to Atari on Sunday, but I have not received any aswers yet.
One more thing. The programers of this game know about this problem(DataIO...), thats why they put this error message into the game. So I suppose they have to know what thing causes this error, but why don't they write it down in the readme file?
Marc
penelopody Dec 16, 2003, 05:48 AM I'd really appreciate help in this. Any suggestions in, um, mostly not too computerspeak would be great.

If my driver is wrong for the monitor and I can't find an Acer driver what do I do?? The computer guy at work has offered a monitor from there. will that assist instead?

Marc1980 Dec 18, 2003, 11:08 AM Yesterday I updated the bios of my computer as ATARI customer support advised, and it seems it helps me. In deity games on huge maps I got this error (DATA IO operation system error)around 1250 BC, but now I am around 20 BC and there is no problem! Yet:). Hopefully the old bios caused this error.

Marc1980 Dec 18, 2003, 11:17 AM penelopody
Read the whole topic, as far as I can remember there were a few posts about problems like yours. I think the problem is not with your monitor, I suppose it supports 1024*768, civ3 requires this resolution. I think it will be something with your video card.

thanks. will give it a try. fingers crossed :)
SuN_DiSCiPLe Dec 18, 2003, 06:47 PM Hi, I bought the gold edition of civilization and its work well, but when i dowload the 1.27 patch to be abble to play multiplayer game, a message appear and tell me to insert the play the world disc, but hes inside. I just want to know if there is a special patch for the gold edition or something like that.
Thanks
PS Sorry if my english is bad, its because my first language is french
Marc1980 Dec 19, 2003, 09:40 AM SuN_DiSCiPLe
This civ3 gold edition includes civ3 play the world, and you would like to play that one? I have civ3 conquest (it includes Play the world) and when I patched ptw to 1.21 I could not play with it because it required a cd. But I had only the conquest cd.
In such case you can go to:
Links deleted
and dowload a so called gamefix which is a game crack, but sometimes you can't play with your legal(original) version, because the patches overwrite a copy protection(or something like that) and the only way to solve this problem to use a crack. Hope it helps.
Marc
Marc, I understand what you are trying to do, and I applaud you for trying to help,

this game only runs on 1024x768 or something like that either manually set ur resolution to that
another thing if you check your monitor profile is it listed as "plug and play or generic"?
you need to d/l ot install the specific brand monitor i had the same problem till i went to my monitor manufacturers web site and d/l the profile for it now it works smooth except for a few drops to windows desktop .. i belive the game has a memory leak
jackass Jan 27, 2004, 02:47 PM i think our problem not about that its about uninstall fileif we can install game without it cheks if its installed or not we can install it but i can't do it :( my problem same with Ragnarok23 i tihnk we both can't install game becaus when we run setup game starts uninstall i'm gonna format my computer i think :(
Padma Jan 27, 2004, 03:22 PM Installshield creates a folder for each app that it is used to install. If it is still there, after an uninstall, it thinks it is still installed, but it can't uninstall, because it's already uninstalled - a vicious circle.
You need to find the InstallShield Information folder, and find the right folder under it to delete. Check this thread (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=74045) for more details. ;)
mwatson Feb 05, 2004, 08:02 PM Hi,
Everything works great in multi except Bombing... I can bomb (i'm the host) but noone who connects can bomb without causing an out of sync error. Both of us have Broadband connections and it isn't the firewall (tried it without it).
Thanks
brace Feb 09, 2004, 08:55 PM C3C loads up and works fine with no problems until DIPLOMACY is either started by a rival nation or I intitiate same. My computer then crashes to the desktop. I can communicate with some nations but when a particular nation contacts me or vice versa it crashes.
The only way I've found I can continue the current game is to reload the save game and hope that the one particular nation does not try and contact me again or it crashes again.
Not much fun.
This is a major bug and one that regularly repeats itself making the game unplayable.
Has this been recognised by anyone else??
I have no other problems with the game and have fully updated all my drivers. I've also implemented sk0tie's suggestions to no avail. I have updated to Beta Patch v1.15 with no joy.

rhikdavis Feb 21, 2004, 10:08 AM My problem is that the game won't even load from the start...I click on the shortcut...the drive spins up and then spins down, then nothing. The desktop never changes. How funky is that? I'm trying to run it on a Sony Vaio Laptop...
Did Skotie leave town? :D

hauck70 Feb 27, 2004, 08:48 PM Hi,
I just bought Civ III Conquest and loaded with no issues. When I try to start the program I get the error:
File Not Found
"Sounds/popupAdvisor.wav"
And then it kicks me out.
Any help you could give would be great.
Chris
rhikdavis Feb 28, 2004, 08:01 AM Hello, did you try doing a search for that file on your hard drive...then check the cd itself....Are you talking about Conquests or just regular civ 3..?
hauck70 Feb 28, 2004, 10:11 AM yes, check all civ programs and couldn't find. anything file with that name. I was thinking of removing both civs and reinstalling..
rhikdavis Feb 28, 2004, 10:29 AM That was going to be my next suggestion....plus try running civ 3 before you install conquests, just to ensure that it works....if you hadn't done that already. Good luck!

glee Feb 28, 2004, 05:34 PM I bought PTW from Amazon (UK) - so as far as I know it's the UK version.
I patched it (also using the UK version) and it ran OK under Windows 98.
Then I upgraded to a new home computer using Windows XP.
When I installed PTW, it ran OK (version 1.14).
When I used the patch, I got the error message 'Please insert the correct CD-ROM, select OK and restart the application'.
New computer spec:
Processor: Intel Celeron 2.60 GHz
Total memory 2.54MB
DirectX 9.0b
Video: Intel 82845G
Total memory 64.0MB
Version 6.13.0010.3510 (English)
Sound: realtek AC97 Audio
Version: 5.10.0000.2520 (English)
Irritatingly my other home computer also runs Windows XP and is happy with PTW version 1.27f.
Any ideas?
(I posted something similar on the Civ3 fixes thread - apologies if this is not correct etiquette, but the machine that doesn't work is the one connected to the Internet, so I can't play with my mates online...)
glee Mar 07, 2004, 06:05 AM OK, I found the problem.
There are innumerable versions of PTW (US, UK etc) and each has its own patch.
Amazon (UK) had sent me one UK disc and one US disc, so I needed different patches. Now both programs run (version 1.27).
If you're still awake (!), you can tell the UK disc by the 7 digit number on the CD (middle left). The US disc has a /2 after the number.
pindicator Mar 16, 2004, 01:55 AM I'm trying to get C3C to run with no luck. When I run the program, the screen goes black like it's trying to play the introduction movies. Then I get an error that reads "Invalid Page Fault in module CIV3CONQUESTS.EXE" and the game quits.
I've been over the Atari Support page (waiting for an email back from them), and tried Windows Updates and driver updates as well. Civ 3 Vanilla still works fine, but C3C will not get past the initial black screen without crashing.

Esca Apr 28, 2004, 08:16 PM I have C3C that I bought in Australia.
Which patches can I use?
USA European or some other.?
It is really annoying having so many versions, all in compatible, of the same game.
Must give support a lot of unnecessary headaches.
ainwood Apr 28, 2004, 09:02 PM For C3C, there is just an international patch.
Patch listing: http://www.civfanatics.com/civ3patches.shtml

It's a relief that there is one patch.
Normo May 18, 2004, 02:51 AM Ive just installed the conquests expansion and have applied all the relevant patches to conquests, civ 3 and play the world. I run play the world, select multiplayer, select internet and the server browser thing appears, problem is it says local games not internet games (which its supposed to), ive tried clicking the location button which doesnt change it. Also when it does say internet game (only happened once or twice so far) and i click host game it goes back to the main menu. I have the relevant firewall ports opened. Any suggestions would be much appreciated
draggor May 18, 2004, 08:10 PM I bought Civ3 Gold 2 days ago and installed it no problem. Have a dell 4600 PC and reinstalled all display drivers and video drivers yesterday, have directX 9.0b.
The game installed perfectly, and the editor works 100%, but when I try to launch the game the error message "please login with administrator privileges and try again" shows up. This makes no sense cuz i only have one account and it is an administrator account, and I installed the game on this account, 4 different times. I use windows XP home.
The shortcut isn't the problem either because going onto the cd directly and launching the application doesn't work.
I really don't know what's wrong...
in case it helps at all:

Padma May 18, 2004, 10:49 PM draggor: assuming you are correct when you say your account has admin privileges, then I would say the source of your problem is "XP Home". My understanding is that with XP Home, MS did something to the way Admin privileges are handled - something different from what was used in Win2K, and XP-Pro.
I'm sorry to say I don't personally know of any fix.
Have you tried contacting Atari Tech SUpport?
draggor May 19, 2004, 03:53 PM yeah contacted them 3 days ago no reply.
siziggy May 19, 2004, 08:11 PM Hi, bro...
When I run Sid Meier's Civ III - Atari Platinum Serie - in my comp (Win XP, AMX Barton 2600+, 256 Mb DDR, DirectX 9.0B and Inno 3d Tornado GForce4 MX Agp8x) only the initial video is showed after that the screen become entirely black and I just hear the music and sounds of commands perfectly but no one image in monitor...
I contacted the support of Atari - Infogrames but his indications (includes change file binkw32.dll from directory on PC from the file of CD, update the driver of graphic card, patchs, display settings and others) doesn't help me.
Thanks for any help...

nospacebar Jul 02, 2004, 03:34 PM I've had civ3 for a while, and am really enjoying it. however, recently i got PTW. I installed it (it installed fine) and went to play it. The autorun pops up, I hit play, and it whirrs for a second or two then asks me to insert the Civ3PTW disc - which is obviouly in the drive already. This keeps me from playing. Has anyone had this problem before? Does anyone know how to fix it?
Padma Jul 02, 2004, 05:40 PM nospacebar: The problem arises from the CD copy-protection system. Is the CD dirty? Is the CD in the same drive you installed it from? Do you have any "virtual CD" programs on your system?
Any of these issues (and probably others) can result in the problem you are experiencing.
nospacebar Jul 04, 2004, 04:40 PM The expansion cd is brand new, right out of the box (I tried wiping it off on my shirt, if that counts for anything). The computer has only one disc drive, and I don't think I have any virtual disc stuff - not sure on that one, I've never really heard of it before.
ainwood Jul 04, 2004, 04:44 PM Try the suggestion in this thread (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=91254). If that doesn't work, your best bet is to convince Atari Tech support that you have a legit copy, and they can help you (With a No-CD patch). :)
tagteamdogg Jul 10, 2004, 06:45 PM my friend made a copy of Civ 3 gold for me. but i have a DVD/CD-RW Combo drive, so it doesnt read the cd while its in the drive and keeps saying:Please insert the Civilization III Gold CD-Rom, and then restart the application. ive tried to find no cd cracks, but there isnt one for the gold edition. Ive tried to find a cd image to load onto a virtual drive, but there isnt one for the gold edition. Does anyone have any ideas, i cant stop thinking about playing civ 3 gold.
nospacebar Jul 11, 2004, 01:15 PM Thanks for the link ainwood, but I tried it and I'm currently using Ultra DMA mode 5 and it won't let me change it. I'll go try Atari tech support, but from what I read in other posts that may be a long shot . . . lol.

thanks

Yep. I am an XP Pro user with NTFS. Recent clean install. I am playing as the Americans as a regent and I recently met with the Germans who gave me contact with the Russkies and Japs. I have saved at the point and selecting diplomacy with the Japanese crashes the game. Diplomacy with the Russians does not. Going to the next turn also crashes the game.
If as suggested it is an NTFS issue then I may try playing with the permissions.
Prince David Aug 22, 2004, 05:41 PM If you encounter the "Out of Range" or "Out of Sync" message from your monitor, find out what type of monitor you have, and install the CORRECT .INF for your monitor. DO NOT use "Default" or "Plug and Play" driver from Microsoft, this is what is causing the problem. GO MICROSOFT! :goodjob:
This is the problem I'm having.
I tried to install Civ III and C3C on my mom's computer as I will be visiting for a while. She has this dinosaur that my uncle cobbled together for her. Works well enough for email etc.
So, what's an .inf? Where do I get it, and what do I do with it when I do? Help is appreciated, I don't know how long I go w/o my Civ. Look! My hands are shaking . . .

15' LG 500G studioworks monitor...
i am able to run the game on win98 compatibility mode but not on winXP....
can u solve the problem......
BTW frm where to get the corret .INF??
Turner Oct 07, 2004, 06:03 AM find the .ini file for the game (civilzationiii.ini, ptw.ini, conquests.ini) and add the line Refresh=XX, where XX equals whatever your monitor refresh rate is. You can find that by right clicking on the desktop, clicking properties, and then settings. hit the advanaced tab, and click on monitor. This will give your refresh rate.
If the file doesn't exist in the proper directory, just make it via notepad.
goyal Oct 07, 2004, 06:34 AM thanx a LOT buddy...........for a yr i was playing on tht compatibility mode...i tried everything updating my (monitor and graphics card)drivers but still there was the problem....

Turner Oct 07, 2004, 06:52 AM Glad to help.

jasper26 Oct 07, 2004, 01:34 PM A few other people have written about this one; I apologize if I missed the answer but I couldn't find a good one...
When i started civ3/conquests it says -load error/ file not found /
sounds/build/ancient/AncECfull.mp3. So I renamed the file that existed to match what it was looking for and eventually I got intot he game. But then, whenever I tried to initiate contact with another civ, a similar FILE NOT FOUND problem comes up, saying something like sounds/diplomusic/dipnapeace cannot be found. I just feel like this thing is going to keep crashing. Every reply I've seen just tells people to reinstall the game, but I've tried this a couple of times. I have DirectX9.0 or whatever the latest version is, and plenty of free space on my computer. Can anyone help me?
CJayCz Oct 09, 2004, 12:10 PM I'm having a problem (sort of). I currently have Civ3 vanilla version 1.07.
I have downloaded the latest patch and installed it but when I do, the game no longer works. The game just refuses to start up. No error screens or nothing, it just doesn't start. I have to uninstall and re-install (w/o the patch) to get the game to work again. This also happens when I try to use the Civ editor. When I start the program, Civ3 refuses to work unless i re-install.
I am currently running:
Windows XP Professional Edition
Pentium 4 1.64 GHz
Soudblaster 16mb Sound Card
S3 Savage Pro DDR 32 MB Video Card (i know it sucks...)
Direct X 9.0
Can someone please help me? Thanks. :king:
Turner Oct 09, 2004, 06:35 PM Make sure you're using the right patch. For VC3 it will be 1.29f.
CJayCz Oct 10, 2004, 06:03 PM I am using that patch, but when I install it and run Civ 3, it doesn't start. The game won't start at all.
Turner Oct 11, 2004, 01:16 AM Did you purchase this from a download site, as opposed to using the CD?
CJayCz Oct 11, 2004, 12:17 PM No, I purchased th CD legitamitely from Gamestop. I bought the whole package, manual, box, CD everything.
ainwood Oct 11, 2004, 01:32 PM Do you get any error messages at all?
Try Atari Technical support (http://www.atarisupport.com/newfaq/civilizationiii.php?browser=1&osType=WINXP&pageDisplay=MAIN) for some suggestions, most likely upgrading your sound card drivers and your video card drivers, and perhaps directx to 9.0a, b or even c might help. :)
CJayCz Oct 11, 2004, 07:12 PM No I get no error messages, the game just doesn't start at all. My sound/video drivers have been fully upgraded. I just recently upgraded to Direct X 9.0c and there has been no change. I will contact Atari support though so thanks for your refferal. ;)
simperial Oct 18, 2004, 05:39 PM Hey, im glad there is someone from Infogrames support to assist.
Niether my friend nor i can successfully host games. Everytime we try, the game is not visible in the multiplayer lobby. We are both running conquests version 1.22.
We are both running XP and have both disabled the XP firewall. I am no a T1 provided by my apartment complex and my friend goes through a router. Im not certain what kind of router it is, but he has opened all the specified ports for Civ 3.
We have no problems joining games, just hosting. However, this is a real problem for us because we wanted to play games with just the two of us and AI for awhile before considering joining other players.
Any help in solving this very frustrating issue would be greatly appreciated.
Venomous Nov 17, 2004, 09:18 PM I've got a Civilization III Limited Edition that refuses to start. I go through the start menu, select Civ III, and nothing happens. No changing screens, no frozen cinematic, just nothing. Upon calling up my tasklist, Civ III wont be listed as an application, but I'll see it in the processes list. Any ideas on how I can fix this? I've updated my sound and video drivers, run windows update, and even got the damn patch.
Any ideas?
ainwood Nov 17, 2004, 10:12 PM To ask the "silly" question - did you have any problem with the install? Have you tried reinstalling?
Also, have you tried browsing through explorer to the install directory to run Civilization3.exe directly?
Venomous Nov 17, 2004, 10:51 PM Yes, I've actually tried uninstalling/reinstalling three times. All three times it installed without a hitch. And having just tried running it by browsing through explorer I got the same results as before.
Interestingly enough, I can run the map editor with no problems at all. Does that mean anything?

Hi, this happened to me once before too. Try cleaning the disk, and reinstalling it. It was most likely a glitch of the graphics, and cleaning & reinstalling should fix it. Post here if it starts to work or if it stays the same, ok? :goodjob:

Seems like this message comes up because something in your C++ Library isn't there and it should be - however, I have no knowledge on this sort of stuff. You'd be better off either contacting Atari or waiting for a more knowledgeable person to post here. :)

Morning.
I just completed a new install of XP Home. I loaded CivIII and tried to play, but it won't work. I've uninstalled it. What do I need to do to get it to work properly? I've downloaded the newest patch, but of course haven't installed it. Don't want to do anything more until I'm sure I'm doing the right stuff. Thanx

chocolatefro Jan 05, 2005, 02:56 AM I'm having a problem (listed earlier) where I can't get it to launch after showing the splash screen, spinning the disk drive madly and then dropping back to the desktop, once (by changing resolution I think) I was able to get it to go black before it dropped back to the desktop. Anyway, I can't find drivers (will try tech at ATI tomorrow) for my video card as I have a laptop now and it seems likek neither ATI nor the mfg of the laptop carry them, and i've tried everything else listed short of the regedit (and my monitor is set at 60 hz so i doubt thats the issue). Here are my system specs and if people think i need to get a safedisk override I'm happy to do it, but I think its totally silly that a game would REQUIRE you to break safegaurds that shouldn't be a problem for people who bought it legit. P.S. I'm not running any fake drives or whatever.

Jakodinn Jan 07, 2005, 07:09 PM Hi, I live in Iceland and I bought Play the World and Civilization III here (in Iceland that is) and there's some problem with PTW. Everytime I've played the game for a little while (I haven't even gotten more than maybe six to eight Science advance things) an error message pops up, something about some file missing, so I decided to update the game but I dont know what patch to download. I downloaded the newest patch in that ftp shizzle and it didn't have any letters but the name of the patch (the other files in the folder had I and S etc. letters behind them wich matched all the beginning letters in the localized versions of the patch(Spain and Italy etc.)), but then I couldn't enter the game and got another error message wich said something about an IFC file missing so I downloaded an IFC file that was the excact IFC file that was missing but then I got a "Please insert disc" message and couldn't enter the game and I reinstalled all that shizza and the same problems came up so I made a nick here desperately seeking help from someone who knows anything about this and I hope your the right guy to ask.
I just started playing the game for the first time, cause when I bought it there was so much stuff going on and then alot of other games came out when I was gonna play this game so I forgot it and didn't play till just now and Im ridiculously excited about it, the first impressions made me almost piss myself and the reviews I read made me even more excited and then this bullshizzle comes up and I cant play it.
Im really mother****ing irritated.
I wanna buy Conquests but I dont know if it really improves the game and I dont wanna spend money on something not worth it seeing as Civ 4 is coming out sometime this year I heard. I have absolutely no idea when though so if you do, I'd really appreciate you telling me that too.
I got all the latest updates for my drivers and I got Windows XP, ATI Radeon 9500 PRO/9700 and enough memory so that can't be the problem.
Ginger_Ale Jan 07, 2005, 07:19 PM I would try a clean reinstall and downloading the patches from here (www.civfanatics.com/civ3patches.shtml). This site is very trust worthy, and you only need to download the latest patch for your area (ie; if you have the US version of PTW, the US patch, UK version, UK patch, etc). It sounds like either your install was corrupted for the science errors and/or the patch you downloaded was not the right one.
About Conquests: with the latest patches and everything, it is fine. Both games work equally well without problems if you get the right patches and the install works fine. It's at least 9-10 months before Civ4, so I would buy Conquests if I were you, but then again, it's not that long of a wait.
Apropos Jan 20, 2005, 10:32 AM Hello sk0tie
I just wanted to thank you, i have loved civ since the first one, and currently playing 3 1.29f, and i diabled the startup video (all i did was throw a _ at the beginning of the file name and it doesn't load, but also saves any kind of file missing notice, it works for other games) but i consistantly had issues with civ3 constantly giving me an error message whenever i tried to startup, it would do the preload then when i tried to load the menu screen, it would always crash. well after many different attempts at different fixes, i finally came across this thread and in the first page i found my solution! all i needed to do was flip my resolultion down to 640x480 16 bit and it works fine! i don't know if this is the correct solution, or just one that would work for me and Axraxes.
but without this thread i could have gotten so fead up i might have started uninstalling things and that is never good. thank you for having this here, and good luck to everyone searching for help!
thank you again
edit: one side bonus, so far it seams that my game has spead up, at least a little bit, one thing i know is i have learned to NEVER choose raging hordes barbarians when i plan on not exploring off my continent till about 500BC
ExSudburyGuy Jan 25, 2005, 06:20 AM Hi, I'm wondering if anyone's tried to play Civ3, using a wide-screen, high-definition TV as a monitor.
Since I got rid of my old monitor, and switched to using the (Samsung) high-definition TV as my monitor, I haven't been able to launch Civ3. I went out and bought Civ Complete and that doesn't work either.
The problem seems to be that the monitor only displays in 1280x720 (32 bit) or 800 x 600 (16 bit) formats. Now, I'm not sure if that's a TV issue or the video card issue. I have a Radeon 7000, 64 mb, video card.
All my other games, programs, etc. work just fine btw.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
ainwood Jan 25, 2005, 01:18 PM Try the ini file parameters in his thread (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showpost.php?p=1980093&postcount=781), as that allows you to force different resolutions (might work).
However, it is strange that you can't even launch. Are you sure that the monitor is the only thing you changed? Are you now using the TV out from your video card instead of the video out channel?
ExSudburyGuy Jan 25, 2005, 06:11 PM I'll check the ini thread. Thanks.
And I'm still using a 15-pin computer video cable. The TV has a computer video plug in, since it's built to be used as a computer monitor as well.
A.S.T.R. Feb 01, 2005, 02:39 PM I've got a Civilization III Limited Edition that refuses to start.
Any ideas?
At a guess, you are running Windows 2000? I was trying earlier today to fix a hang problem I have, and tried to run Civ 3 in Compatibility mode (all three of them: 95, 98, and NT 4.0). Nothing happened with any of those, but the processes were running, though taking no CPU time. You may want to log in as Administrator, open properties on your shortcut(s) or even the executable itself, and check out the compatibility tab (it's only visible as Admin). I at least got the splash screen back when I switched back to standard Win2K mode.
On a similar thread, is there anyone out there running Civ 3 (Limited or Gold, not sure which, but I got it in the fancy metal tin) under Windows 2000 with a Savage video card of any kind? I'm only getting the splash screen, then the computer switches video modes a couple of times, ending on 640x480, and hangs with the CPU maxed according to Task Manager. The screen is black, and I never see the opening video. I'm on a Pentium II-equivalent (AMD) ~533 MHz with 120 MB RAM. The video card is a Savage4. I seem to have seen one or two other threads here and on Apolyton implying trouble with those video cards, but those posters never narrowed it down to the card either.
Thanks in advance for any help.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
EDIT: Last night I got it working by renaming the intro video as someone had suggested, by putting an underscore '_' in front of the name. That got it started, though I'd still like to know why it hung on the video, and if it will hang if it tries to play any of the other movies. Also, after a couple hours of play (I'm in the 1780's, Warlord, beginning of Industrial Age I think), the white circle around my active unit no longer twists back and forth. What's up with that?
jayeffaar Feb 05, 2005, 09:33 PM Since I got rid of my old monitor, and switched to using the (Samsung) high-definition TV as my monitor, I haven't been able to launch Civ3. I went out and bought Civ Complete and that doesn't work either.
The problem seems to be that the monitor only displays in 1280x720 (32 bit) or 800 x 600 (16 bit) formats.
As far as I know, the game will refuse to start if you try to run it on a monitor that can't display at least 768 lines (since the game's minimum res is 1024x768).
On my HDTV, I get the same thing if I try to run it at 1280x720, but it runs at 1920x1080. Of course, at that res on a CRT rear projection HDTV, I can barely read the text so it's a bit pointless, but it runs and the maps are pretty to look at...

Turner Feb 25, 2005, 11:47 PM Are you playing a mod? It sounds like it, as I don't recall a tiger unit in the standard game. I would check in the thread you d/l'd the mod from. They would have a better answer than asking here.

barbarossa2005 Apr 16, 2005, 06:39 AM Hi
Recently bought Civ3, installed it OK, but it continually failed to run from both menu and Shortcut, even after several reinstalls. I also upgraded to DirectX 9.0. I ran the DirXDiagn tool, and under Direct Features ('Display' tab), I noticed both Direct3D and AGP Texture Acceleration are 'not available'. DirectDraw Acceleration is OK and enabled. Is this causing my Civ3 not to work? Does this have to do with my video and sound cards? or something else?? Please help, many thanks in advance.
xekario Apr 27, 2005, 04:32 PM I have recently bought Civ3, and I love the game, but, when my civilization gets around 1800-2000 AD the game crashes (5 different games, started from scratch). Jamming the reset button is the only option left. Then, I installed patch v1.29 (or something like that), the game crashes, but I find myself returned to my desktop. Anyone's got any clue about how to solve this annoying problem? It would help me a lot!
PS I didn't change a thing, no MODS whatsoever.
Genocidicbunny Apr 28, 2005, 07:24 PM I keep getting this problem. I install civ 3:vanilla and it plays fine. I have no need for patches since its already 1.29. But then I install PTW and it says insert CD when I try to play it. Funny thing is when I try to uninstall it it does the uninstall but then kind of replaces everythig since PTW doesnt go away. I decide fine, lets install C3C. As I try to install it it finishes and then says
Severe!!!
C3C failed to initialize setup (or something like that )
Will now uninstall.
And so It uninstalls. I try to figure out what the problem is and I run across another thing. Nilla C3 wont play or uninstall and it played fine that same day before the installations. I finally manage to remove it and start installing it again. Everything works fine. Then I decide to Install C3C again and the same thing happens. This never happened on my old comp or my laptop. I am running

shawn-m Jun 02, 2005, 01:37 PM Howdy everybody,
I picked up a slug of games a couple months back including Civilization III Complete and played musical chairs with limited HD space. Initial installation went off without a hitch, but I can’t recall if I ever actually loaded the game although I did register it. Civ3C was uninstalled within a week of its installation. A registry cleaner also deleted a few extra files along the way, although I can’t say what those files were. No mods of any kind were downloaded or installed during the brief time Civ3C was on the PC, although I would have patched it if an update were available.
So the time’s come to re-install (community and mods found here helped put a fire under my seat), but I’m getting the following errors from the install disk (disk I):
· Error 1316. A network error occurred while attempting to read from the file: C:\windows\installer\civilization III complete edition.Msi
· Error 1603 Fatal error during installation. Consult windows installer help (Msi.chm) for more information.
Prior to getting these messages, the installer uninstalls Civ3C components I thought were history –I can’t find anything associated with Civ3C in the Program Files. Like others who’ve posted here, Remove Programs still lists Civ3. Resetting screen res to 1024 x 768 (normally higher) doesn’t help nor can I find “AppName=Civilization III” in any InstallShield Info folder documents. Admittedly, I’m no PC expert so I’ve also been unable to find and reference the Msi.chm file.
Don’t know if this will help, but here’s a few specs:
OS: XP Home (SP 2)
DirectX: 9.0c
CPU: AMD Athlon 64, 2000 Mhz
Chipset: VIA K8M800, AMD Hammer
HD Space: 69GB free (had much more crud on the PC during the initial installation, HD’s space has since been freed up)
RAM: 1024MB
Video Adapter: Nvidia GeForce FX 5500 (256 MB)
Audio Adapter: Via AC97
Monitor: SyncMaster 17” LCD
System is networked with an older ME OS machine.
Anti-virus software was disabled during failed re-installation attempts.
Nvidia and all other drivers, I think, are up to date... Help would be greatly appreciated. I’d like to avoid HD reformatting although I’m beginning to wonder if that will help. Any advice?
shawn-m Jun 02, 2005, 07:34 PM Alright.
Following advice I’ve found elsewhere on this board, I’ve visited Atari’s website. Their RegEdit uninstall method sounds easy enough but for one thing: It’s not possible to delete {0AD84416-63A4-4CF3-BDDF-8FA866711FB0} if it doesn’t first exist.
well, crud... can’t believe it’s this difficult.
shawn-m Jun 03, 2005, 02:39 PM The long, arduous road to
SUCCESS!
(for me, anyway)
For those like myself who’ve followed the advice on this board and from Atari but still can’t re-install Civilazation III Complete, well, here’s what worked for me:
Back up that registry (and everything else you can) before attempting this. It’s too stinkin’ easy to scrap the wrong file when your bleary-eyed and in the middle of deleting hundreds of entries. If you have other Atari/Infogrames/Civ3 mods and titles installed on your system then be aware that the following actions will undoubtedly destroy them –unless you know exactly what you’re doing and what to look for. And if you do blow out your system? Well, that’s what backups are for. Lastly, perform this at your own risk since I’m no computer guru and can’t possibly foresee what will happen on other systems with different configurations and software. Hey, I’m not even sure about my own setup.
Still interested? Then here we go:
For starters, I used XP’s search function for hidden files using the keywords, Atari, Infogrames, Civ3 & Civilization. Yes, a few files were found and then deleted, but Civilization III Complete remained listed in Add/Remove Programs and the re-install still didn’t take. Then I performed the same searches in RegEdit.
I launched RegEdit and used the “Find” and “Find Again” commands with the following terms:
Atari
Infogrames
Civ3
Civilization
Loads of entry hits from across the registry took hours to remove. I deleted entire folders if they essentially contained nothing but Civilization III Complete keys. If the folder housed other information, I’d simply delete Civilization references and leave the rest of the folder’s contents intact.
Far and away the largest deposit of Civilization III Complete entries was located in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Installer\UserData\S-1-5-18\Components. Deleting entries from this location alone took me somewhere between one and two hours. Civilization III Complete disappeared from Add/Remove Programs and Civ3 finally re-installed perfectly –nor did it ask to be removed during the installation process. I haven’t used any patches or installed any mods yet, but the game does load properly. The rest of my system (so far) is perfectly stable. I’ll leave any subsequent game problems to another day, if and when they’re found.
Now here’s my question for others to answer: Keeping in mind that fixes from this board and Atari were tried first, could I have simply removed folders, keys and values from HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Installer\UserData\S-1-5-18\Components without deleting registry entires found elsewhere to achieve the same result? If so, it would make a long process somewhat shorter.
and with that, this noob is signing off for the day.

Sparrow37 Aug 11, 2005, 02:49 PM Hi, I am sorry i dont have time to read this entire thread right now, but in breif the peoblem I am having is when i try to run Civ 3 complete on my new PC the Civ 3 logo comes up and it stalls there, the game just dosent load, i was able to install with no problems at all. I am running Windows xp-64 and I am thinking this might be part of the problem, is there a fix for this?
as a side note i dont think it should be causing the issue but i ahvent yet installed the sound drivers on ym machine.
Turner Aug 11, 2005, 09:01 PM It might be an issue if you haven't turned the sounds off in the .ini file.
Install the sound drivers, and if it still doesn't work let us know.
Sparrow37 Aug 12, 2005, 12:05 PM I got it working, aparently it just took like 15 minutes to load up the first time..... after i let it wait for a while it loaded now it loads in a reasonable time. weird but hey im not complaining.
Madcivilian Aug 26, 2005, 07:58 PM I just bought civ gold, and I have conquests on the way, but the problem is I'm having the same refresh problem as some of you seem to have been having. I'm not as computer literate as some of you, and can't find this .ini file to alter even. Does it exist in gold? if so, where do I have to modify it?
I have a Nvidia Geforce 6200 graphics card and windows XP.
Just thought I'd volunteer so more info.
The monitor I'm using currently is horribly out of date, spent all my cash on the comp and a new graphics card. My moniter is an old circa 1996 acerview 54e 13" crt-which I heard became BenQ with a max refresh of 60-70. I don't know how to hack the registry and would like to avoid doing anything that won't let me upgrade the monitor as soon as I can afford it. Thanks
Turner Aug 26, 2005, 08:45 PM Well, the file doesn't exist until you actually start a game. But you can create it, and the game will append to the file.
Look and see if you have a 'PTW' directory. If so, create the file ptw.ini in that directory. In that file all you need is Refresh=XX where XX is your desired refresh rate.
FeezNuts Sep 22, 2005, 02:36 PM I am recieving a msi.chm windows installer error while trying to install off the 3rd disc. I don't believe civ3 has been installed on my computer before and i am sure all my drivers are updated. Please help with any thoughts!
