Hi!

Roman ballista - a good flavour catapult for the romans. And perhaps to some other civs too. And this might prove very useful in some scenarios. ;)

Download! (http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads6/RomanBallista.zip)

Here is RomanBallistaLarge -civilopedia picture

This unit has not been tested in game, so if any problems occur, please let me know.

Here are some animated previews.
The order is: default, fortify, attack, victory, run, fidget and death

Well, that was fast. And it looks great. And I'm going to put him in my mod. :)

He doesn't flinch/jump when firing though...

Well, he's a batlle hardened little guy, who has pushed this thing for kilometer after mile. And he has shot it so many times... he does not flinch for such small things anymore... :)

This is great! Nice job.

Btw, aaglo, which program do you use for making the gif previews?. I'm using "From Flic to Gif" but it seems the flics loses some resolution.

Also, how do you do to put diferent anins (attack, death) in just a simple one?

Great job!

:goodjob:

@The Slayer,

I don't do the animated gifs from the flc's. I do them straight from the individual frames with a program called Gif movie gear. It's very decent program for gif anims.

[EDIT]: you can download the demo of that program from here:
http://www.gamani.com/

@Aaglo: Where can I get a demo?

@The Slayer: To have all the different animations in one, using Flc2Gif, you need to make a special flc for it.

@Aaglo, can I ask you a question about the program? First, thanks for telling where I can get a demo. Second, okay, I have my four storyboard PCXs I want to use. Is there a way to get what I want in, without exporting, and then importing, every sungle frame separeatly?

Gogf,
I don't know how it works with storyboards. I think it does, but in a bit different sb's compared to the flicster sb's. And it does not accept (IIRC) pcx-files. you have to save them as .gif or .bmp

This unit goes straight to the top ten!!

Thanks!!!:goodjob:

I saved it as a .gif, but it takes the whole thing as one frame, is there anyway I can have it split the frame? How do you do it?

Thanks for the help.

Gogf:
- you have to import it as a gif filmstrip (Import from>gif filmstrip...)
- The filmstrip should not have borders at all.

Maybe the same as the catapult with a defense value of 2? That's how I use it.

personally, I would use the unit either a replacment for the longbow, of the catapult

I would use Ballistas for Catapults, Fire Catapults for Trebuchets.

This unit is masterly! One of the best I've seen.. :worship:

Two things though..

#1. This machine was in fact managed by a two man crew.

#2. If you're a scenario maker and want to use the latin names for roman units, remember that this unit is a catapulta. The ballista was in fact the thing we today call a catapult.

Other than that, one of the greatest units ever!

1. Yeah but do the Firaxis artilery pieces have enough crew.

2. Pedantic and confusing. The roman troops caleed this a Scorpio (scorpion) and the medium catapult an Onager (wild ass). Each Cohort had 6 Scorpios and 1 onager. ( for those who care ).

Each cohort or each legion, or were there separate artillery cohorts attached directly to the legion? (and, yes, I know this will almost certainly vary depending upon which period we are speaking of, local circumstances, etc.).

Thanks In Advance For The Clarification,

Oz

I'm sorry you feel that way..

Indeed they did. That's the very reason for this modern misunderstanding.
The correct contemporary military latin term for them are still catapulta and ballista.. (for those who care ;) )

artillery wasa not grouped into its own cohorts until the late Imperial period, before then, they were under the direct responsibilty of a cohort (and yes, each individual cohort recived artillery peiceis)
