It seems that no one posted any working non-overlay landmark, so I tried to experiment with it. By non-overlays I mean LM Grasslands, Plains and Deserts, whose behavior is probaly known to all who tried.
I got steppe terrain working, though it is still very tricky.

I can only use one of the three, plains in this case - other must remain unchanged in order to blend the steppe with the rest. In other words, no modified LM can touch normal terrain. No hills/mountains/forest can be placed on it, but LM hills/mountains/forests can.

I remember warpstorm saying that making non-overlay LM terrains is possible, though he didn't say how... so does anyone know better solution? This works, but requires so much editing of surroundins, that becomes more of a problem than advantage.

Here is example of steppe, surrounded by LM terrain to blend correctly:

and here's example of steppe touch non-LM terrain, so that it blends with it's "mother" plains and makes mess:

Ooh! I really like those steppe gfx...I plan to make a "Genghis Khan's Conquests" Scenario after the Peloponnesian War scenario, and these steppe gfx will really help!:goodjob:

similiar graphics are in some graphics mods already ie. Rhye's I think, so if you want the steppe, you can use those mods. The idea here is to have it without replacing the plains, but currently it's not very usable.

So you're saying that LM desert can't touch normal mountains? In that case: Oh woe! :cry: I can find a workaround for it, by not using plains, but it's a pain in the derriere, sure enough...

yeah, if LM desert is modified so it looks different than standard desert, it can only touch LM mountains.

Strange. My understanding of Swedish goes up by the minute or so it seems. ;)

Too bad about LM terrains. Might explain why after the blissful times post release we haven't heard much from the terrain modders about LM terrains.

But if I understand things correct it isn't the mountains per se that is the problem, but rather the grassland under the mountains? We can put forest on different "underlays", can we also put it on LM terrains? Is it possible to put mountains and hills in this way on LM grassland? :hmm:

no, not the grassland. it's the "blender", so to speak. game engine blends terrain taking 1/4th of each tile, and often not only the file you would expect... if you place a mountain on LM terrain, indeed a grassland appears below, but since that grassland is non-LM, it blends with non-LM terrain, and 1/4 or 1/2 of that terrain will appear on surrounding tiles - as shown on my 2nd pic. So the only way to keep blending correct is to place LM Mountain/Hill which has LM grasslands below which in turn blends with other LM terrains...

Interesting. Any change you will make those steppes for normal terrain too? Cause I could sure use them..

@Yoda

Sure np, it doesn't take much time, but you'll have to suffer from the problem I described ;)
