The first game, i played on prince, normal world, 7 civs + me. I was surrounded right off the bat, 2 civs above me 1 below and 1 to the right (sea was to the left)
i tried to expand asap and secure some territory and ended up stepping on too many toes. They ganged up and screwed me over. They vaped my army (3 warriors and 2 archers) and proceeded to lay waste to my border cities. I retired when i knew there was no way out.
Second game, i decided to go chieftain. Huge Earth map. 9 civs + me. That was a joke, i alone could have taken all 9 of em on, they were still in ancient era while i was using industrial era stuff, i didnt want to waste time so i just quit that game.
Third game, i played warlord. 2nd largest world, 8 civs + me.
I was on a continent along with the romans. We split it roughly half and half, they had the upper half while i had the bottom. We co-existed peacefully like brothers for over 5000 years, then just 1 spearman flushed the 5000 years of peace down the toilet. I demanded that the romans remove their spearman or declare war. They had withdrawn the last several hundred times but this time they declared war. I had been working towards gunpowder to get my musketmen, as my insurance against those damned legions. I kept iron working from the romans for as long as i could. Even tried to get control of their ore deposits, but i failed. They were able to secure 4 iron ore patches and whats worse, i almost completly ignored the luxury resources. When i finally realized wtf was going on, they had taken control of all the resources outside my borders except for 1 iron and 1 silk.
I managed to get control of them and so i had 2 iron, 1 horse, 1 silk. Thats it!
well its not all bad, i have horses and i have iron. I would be able to hold out till gunpowder.
So then i finally reached the tech, i was so releaved, finally i can secure my borders and attempt to retake some of those resources from the romans. But wait, the musketmen dont showup on the build list, whats going on!? Holy crap! i have no saltpeter with in my borders. The 5 ore deposits were on the wrong side of the bloody border!!! NOOOOO
To make matters worse, they were far away and deep inside the Roman Empire. To get to those resources, i would have to take on the dreaded Roman Legions. So i finally started producing some serious war material. Longbowmen, War Elephants, Swordmen and Horsemen. Thats when that spearman entered my soverign territory and i asked Ceaser to remove him or declare war, he chose the latter.
My situation was not desperate, i had pikemen (3 defence rating, legion as 3 attack) so his legions didnt pose much of a threat to me, all i had to do was simply hold my cities while i built up my forces, simple. Well it didnt turn out so, BOTH my iron ore deposites were sitting right on the border, one was actually outside my border, i had a colony secure that source.
So i was expecting the new AI to be smart, attack the colony/roads and attempt to kick "the feet out from under me." So i stationed most of my forces right next to the iron ore and the silk deposits. Now both of these were on opposite sides of my empire, one was on the east coast, the other was on the west. This meant the forces guarding the center were spread pritty thin and sure enough thats where the romans sent their first wave. Roughly 8 or 9 Legions. I had no choice but to pull some of my war elephants from the flanks to re-enforce the center. I was expecting the comp to attack the weakened flanks so i kept the pikemen ready to move incase they attacked, but they never did. The romans sent wave after wave of legions at the center and i was finally forced to move the bulk of my forces to the center to meet the spearhead of the Roman invasion. My Elephants fought bravely recieving support from Swordmen and Horsemen. I had left my Longbowmen (4/0/1, powerful mofo's but only in attack) to meet any units heading for my resources. After a few turns, i had to pull some of those way to keep the lines in the center from crumbling. I had about 3 or 4 Longbows on each side and thats when it happened. The comp rushed me on side (the iron side) with about 5 or 6 horsemen. Because the horses can retreat from battle when they get hurt they were able get away from the attacking longbows and the very next turn retaliate. Since my longbows couldnt retreat nor did they have a defence rating, they fell like flies. Then the comp destroyed my colony and then pillaged the road connecting the other iron ore to my cities.
With that, the comp effectively removed my swordsmen and pikemen from the picture. i was left with longbows and war elephants (they dont need any resources, this is why they are so good) i could have held out but the roman legions are powerful and cheap while my elephants are powerful but rather expensive. They outnumbered me and took my northerly cities, my main industrial base was now in Roman hands. I said gg and retired.
This AI code is almost as smart as the ones that play chess. I am very very very happy that i lost cuz its something new :)
