Here I am starting my second thread of the day - sorry everybody!:D
Anyway, I noticed a thread about the JFK assassination. I have a book at home (Strange Stories, Amazing Facts) that lists a series of unbelievable coincidences between the JFK and Lincoln assassinations. I'll post them up, and does anyone here know of other bizarre historical coincidences? I'd be interested to hear of them.

Anyway...

1. Lincoln was elected to Congress in 1846; JFK in 1946.
2. Lincoln was elected President in November 1860; JFK in November 1960.
3. Lincoln was succeeded by a Southerner, (Andrew) Johnson, born 1808; JFK was succeeded by a Southerner (Lyndon Baines) Johnson, born 1908.
4. Lincoln's assassin was John Wilkes Booth, a Southerner born in 1838; JFK's assassin was Lee Harvey Oswald, a Southerner born in 1939.
5. John Wilkes Booth was shot before his trial; Lee Harvey Oswald was shot before his trial.
6. Booth committed his crime in a theatre and ran to a barn; Oswald committed his crime from a warehouse and ran to a (movie) theatre.
7. Lincoln said on the day he was assassinated, 'I believe there are men who want to take my life... if it is done, it is impossible to prevent it"; JFK said on the day he was assassinated, 'If somebody wants to shoot me from a window with a rifle, nobody can stop it. So why worry about it.'
8. Lincoln and Kennedy were both historic civil rights campaigners who were shot in the back of the head while sitting with their wives.
9. Lincoln was shot in Ford's Theatre; JFK was shot in a car made by the Ford Motor Company - a Lincoln.
10. Kennedy had a secretary named Evelyn Lincoln who tried to stop him going to Dallas.

Unbelievable, huh!?

All right then:

In 1898, Morgan Robertson wrote a book called 'Futility,' in which an 'unsinkable' steamship that carried some 3000 passengers set out on its maiden voyage carrying the rich and famous. As it neared the end of its voyage across the Atlantic, it struck an iceberg and sank with terrible loss of life because there were not enough lifeboats for all of the passengers. And the name of the steamship in Robertson's novel? The 'Titan.'

Uncanny!

Just before D-Day in WW2, the Times crossword used the code names of the five beachheads as words in the crossword.

The guy compiling it was "Interviwed" but the spooks were satisfied that it was a coincidence.

Hey my signature!!!!! gotta admit this quote is good...do you know what he said before that...I looked on the net for like 3 hours without finding anything but i think he said "We will hit you so hard that we will bury you" or something like that no?

The two killers of the Columbine High School had plan to each enter a plane and crash in the twin towers of the WTC after their shooting...  What a chance they never did!!! Oups Ben laden did it anyway...

On the contrary, it is MY signature, young one;)
In regards to the Khruschevian context, I have it somewhere among my files, and will look for it tomorrow. I'll just have to flick through his absorbing memoirs once more.

Simon, that was a funny joke.
Has anyone heard of a coincidence between NASA shuttle being in space and earthquakes happening down here?

The movie "Conspiracy Theory" talks about it .

Why are the famous murders only known by two names only and important people known by the full names ? Or something like that

Both the murders of Lincon and Kennedy are known by two names only.

It looks like history was some how repeating itself with Kennidy and Lincon

During outfitting, the German BB Bismark was alongside a U-Boat (sorry, forgot the number).

Jokingly, the U-Boat commander promised to save the BB if it got into trouble, and much was made of that at the time between the crews.

But, as Ark Royal steamed North towards the launch point for the Swordfish attack which would cripple the Bismark's steering and leave her helpless, ignoring the usual anti-submarine zig-zags etc in the rush to get into place, she steamed straight past the same U-Boat.

Which had, fortunately for Ark Royal but unfortunately for Bismark, used her last torpedo to finish off a relatively small cargo ship, apparently after some discussion as to whether using the last torpedo was worth it.

Here's kind of a funny little anecdote from WW2 which I've scrounged up from obscure memory:

Some American soldiers (I think paratroops) were pinned down by heavy German fire, when an officer remarked that they were throwing everything they had at them but the kitchen sink. Sure enough, there was a large explosion and down came a kitchen sink, to which the officer exclaimed "Damn, now they're throwing that at us too!" (or something along those lines).

Not really. This is just an urban legend. Go here (http://www.snopes.com/history/american/linckenn.htm) to get the scoop.

A German plane bombarded the Soviets with kitchen sinks in Stalingrad. I read in a book about that battle.

Sure is. Last year I made $20 on a bet about an urban legend (the Aladdin one, specifically), using that site to prove I was right.

Actually, it turned our the the guy was also a teacher at a school near one of the bases where Operation Overlord was being planned.
The story goes that when the teacher/crossword writer asked his students for some words to put in the crosswords the kids responded with codewords that they'd heard the soldiers talking about outside the base!
