View Full Version : Announcing heihojin's 12th PBEM game - Conquests!

Feb 10, 2004, 11:57 AM
I am now taking signups for my 12th PBEM game!

This is a Civilization III: Conquests epic game and requires the latest versions of Civilization III (currently v1.29f) and Civilization III: Conquests (currently v1.15 Beta) to participate.

So far, I have the following confirmed players: heihojin (me) - random civIf you would like to play, please post a reply, send a private message, or e-mail me with your e-mail address and civ preference (if any). I require your e-mail address to hold your spot!

Please also either update your profile to indicate your location - city, state (if you're in the U.S.A.), and country - or indicate your location in your request to play. Alternatively, you could specify your time zone. I use this information to arrange turn sequence from East to West around the globe.

I am willing to customize your civ for you if you provide the appropriate information for the fields (Formal, Noun, Adjective, Title). Please note that your civ is considered public information at the start of the game; if you opt for a customized, random civ, you are expected to inform the group of the actual civ given to you immediately following your first turn.

The game will begin as soon as I have eight confirmed players. If you have not specified a civ preference by the time, you will be assigned a random civ. Spots for the game and civ preferences will generally be filled first-come, first-serve, as determined by the timestamp of the request; however, I may deliberately favor some requests over others in the interest of balancing my games.

Turn summaries will likely not be posted to this or any other forum, as I am far more interested in actually playing the game than with posting turns in a public forum. If you would like to post a turn summary here for the benefit of forum visitors, however, feel free to do so.

Commitments

By requesting to play you commit to the following: You agree to contact me (through e-mail, private message, a third party or other means) as soon as possible if you encounter technical difficulties or other circumstances that prevent you from fulfilling these commitments. You agree to act in a courteous manner toward all other players at all times in your "out-of-game" communication.
You agree to abide by the general protocol for gameplay as set forth in the welcome e-mail, as well as any changes to the protocol I may make during the course of the game.
You agree to inform the group when you are going to be unavailable for a period of greater than 24 hours.
You agree to check your e-mail at least once daily (at least twice daily is preferred).
You agree to promptly respond to all messages - immediately, if possible.
You agree to complete and forward your turn within 24 hours of receiving it.
You agree to refrain from "in-game" communication with another player until making contact with that player's civilization.
You agree to play the game to completion unless personal or technical circumstances render it impossible for you to do so.If you would like to peruse the general protocol for gameplay prior to signing up, let me know and I will happily e-mail it to you.

"In-game" communication refers to sharing information about your civ or other players' civs, making deals, proposing alliances, etc.. "Out-of-game" communication primarily refers to administrative matters (such as "Dude, where's my turn?" e-mails), but also includes innocuous conversation (such as "Where is everyone from?" e-mails).

Default Game Settings and Rules

Unless specified otherwise, the default game settings and rules will be as follows: Game Type: Play By Email
Game Mode: Standard
Turn Timer: None
World Size: Standard
Barbarian Activity: Roaming
Land Mass: Continents
Water Coverage: 70% Water
Climate: Normal
Temperature: Temperate
Age: 4 Billion
Difficulty: Regent
Allow Domination Victory
Allow Space Race Victory
Allow Diplomatic Victory
Allow Conquest Victory
Allow Cultural Victory
Allow Wonder Victory
Allow Civ-Specific Abilities
Allow Cultural Conversions
Preserve Random SeedPlease note that many of these rules are open to discussion beforehand; I will generally side with the majority opinion.

One question that has frequently arisen is whether reloading the game is allowed. Although the "Preserve Random Seed" rule removes most of the incentive for reloading, there are of course other advantages. Unfortunately I know of no way to regulate the number of times the game is reloaded, so any rule prohibiting reloading is impossible to enforce. Furthermore, reloading seems quite acceptable in the event of an error, e.g. if you make a mistake in moving your units. Because I am reluctant to support rules that cannot be enforced, and because I'm sure that I personally will have to reload at least one game due to an error, I do not have any rules regulating reloads. Ultimately, it's a question of what provides the most enjoyment for you as a player.

Please note that once you make contact with another player's civ, your diplomacy options are completely unrestricted. Feel free to invent whatever deals you wish, regardless of whether they are enforceable from within the game or not.

These games tend to fill up quickly, so submit your request to play now! If you do not make this game, I always accept requests for alternate spots in this game and any of my other current games, so there's a good chance you can get in at least one of my games as an alternate.

Here's to the next war!

Sure, I'm in. I'd like to actually join a game from the start, instead of replacing other guys.

I'll take the Americans. With some modifications:

Additional: Rubberjello said he wanted to join "a famous heihojin game". What I would like to know is: famous for what? (I'm in regardless of the answer.)

I will tell you why it's famous. First of all, he is the best host I have played with. He has the more complete set of rules. Second, he doesn't let a game stall. He keeps track of where the turn is and turns really do take one day turn around (usually) in these eight player games. I have been in several of these but unfortunately had to give them up with I went to Afghanistan, but now that I'm back I can see the games I was in are well along their way. I'm looking forward to getting back into this one.

Sounds good. I was just hoping that it wasn't famous for consistently having hugely massive wars in them.

Thanks for the kind words, DogBoy!

Let me clarify one item: the 24-hour turnaround commitment is an individual commitment, meaning that you are expected to complete and forward your turn within 24 hours of receipt. In an 8-player game, this typically results in a turn cycle of 4-5 days. Shorter turn cycles are possible, but they ultimately depend on player availability.

Well, I do have a couple regular players who have warmongering tendencies, but none of my epic games have evolved into world wars - yet. Although that would be pretty cool...

Of course, the admin of this game would never consider invading a peaceful, neighboring sovereign nation for any reason. Trust me! :satan:

Prettyvacant, you must have a new e-mail. I e-mailed you when I got back to finish our game but you never responded. And just as the game was getting good too. I doubt we could play it as it was PTW, but we might. I still have the save file if you want to try to pick it back up again.

hi!
Is there still a civ left? i'd like to join in, but have never played PBEM before. how long does a game like this take? I may be out for some 5 days in late feb and a week in mid march, would that be too much of a problem?

my email: e.jakub@centrum.cz

i'll choose the rest if i'm in.

Let me know what tribe you'd like to play within the next 24 hours, otherwise you'll get a randomly picked civ.

You can expect this game to take more than a year to complete, perhaps two years. Time off is generally not a problem, unless it's going to be for two weeks or longer. Just let me know with as much advance notice as possible.

We begin the game with the following confirmed players: heihojin - random civ
purvisxiii - random civ
DogBoy - Persians, customized as "Magnificent Persians"
Vancouver2010 - Americans, customized as "Canadians"
fanste - Ottomans
Portuga - Egyptians
magog - Celts, customized as "Moravians"
Rubberjello - random civI just sent the welcome e-mail and the 4000 BC turn. When you receive the welcome e-mail, please send me a short reply indicating that you have received it. If for some reason you have not received it, please let me know as well.

Be sure to read the welcome e-mail before playing your first turn. Remember to carbon-copy me on all turn sends and confirmation receipts for the first turn only.

DogBoy and magog: There was not enough room to fit your customized Formal labels, and so I concatenated them to "Persian Empire" and "Moravian Empire" respectively.

Enjoy the game!

heihojin,
I was wondering could I use your rules and similar settings for my own PBEM game that I plan to post here? They seem to be recognised well in the community as a good game to play so I thought it'd be great to use while we all wait for your next game.

Thanks a lot,
Just one quick question though how do you organise the order in which people play. Do you check the day time for each persons timezone and then make sure they fit in the order according to their afternoon/evening which should be the time most people would check their email to play their turn?

hi guys, as i said before i won't be able to play during the weekend (till wednesday morning). i will be away this week and not playing until monday 29th evening. I am very sorry, have to have a vacation.

by the way why is it that my capital shows as the top 1 city? is it more or less random or does it have any reason? It is a beautiful city and I hope it stays on the top but why now, all the cities must be more or less the same at this point?

It seems I was a little hasty in requesting the upgrade to v1.20, as I simply assumed (wrongly) that Firaxis gave a damn about their PBEM players. Once again, their fumbling developers have screwed us and I am forced to ask you to maintain an obsolete v1.15 Beta installation.

It is relatively simple to maintain two distinct installations of Conquests. If you haven't yet upgraded, and are still using v1.15 Beta: Rename the Civilization III\Conquests folder to "Conquests v1.15 Beta" or something like that.
Uninstall Conquests with "Add/Remove Programs" from your Control Panel.
Reinstall Conquests to the default folder.
Install the patches for both v1.20 and v1.22.
If you have already installed the v1.20 or v1.22 patches, you can follow the above steps to rename your Conquests folder to "Conquests v1.22", uninstall Conquests, reinstall Conquests, and then install the v1.15 Beta patch. Thankfully, all three patches can still be found at http://www.civfanatics.com/civ3patches.shtml.

I have sent what I'm sure will be the first of many negative feedback submissions to Firaxis. If you would like to add your two cents and let them know how miserable they've made your game-playing experience, the URL is http://www.firaxis.com/contact_gamefeedback.cfm.

In an attempt to convert this game to v1.22, we will do the following: Please play the current turn (3450 BC) using v1.15 Beta.
When I receive the turn beginning 3400 BC, I will attempt to load it using v1.20. Assuming I am successful, we will play 3400 BC using v1.20.
When I receive the turn beginning 3350 BC, I will attempt to load it using v1.22. Assuming I am again successful, we will play 3350 BC using v1.22.heihojin
