View Full Version : The City of Huntington
FortyJ Feb 11, 2004, 09:56 PM Welcome to Huntington
By order of the honorable Governor Plexus (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?postid=1587388#post1587388), I hereby assume the position of Mayor for the township of Huntington.

The coastal community of Huntington is blessed with an abundance of dyes in the jungles to the southeast. This resource has attracted a number of artisans who have already begun to apply these dyes to various fabrics, creating wondrous works of art. The banner displayed above, titled Sunset in the Sacred Rainforest, was given to Governor Plexus after the official founding of our great town.

Cyc Feb 12, 2004, 12:56 AM Greetings Mayor FortyJ. I'm just dropping by with a complimentary case of wine. One Mayor to the other, I hope things work well for you here. Nice work on the first post! Love those colors.
On a professional note, I would be extremely interested in securing as many different colors of Dye as you have available. I'm currently working on creating a label for my product. I'd definitely like some variations of Red, maybe a pink or purple. Also I'd like to see some greens and blues. :) I hear the City of Huntington has a supply of the best Dyes in Fanatica. Hopefully, we can come to some kind of arrangement.
*Mayor Cyc slaps a mosquito on the back of his neck SLAP!*
Anyway, Mayor FortyJ, it's good to see you out and about again. Best of luck with your new city. :goodjob:
FortyJ Feb 12, 2004, 09:34 AM Lord Mayor Cyc,
*SLAP*
My humble thanks for such a kind gift. I have heard that there is no equal to the wines of Montpellier. The people of Huntington shall treasure it.
*SLAP*
Of course, wine is always best shared with friends. I insist that you stay for a formal banquet in your honor during which we can open a bottle, or three, of your nationally reknown wine and drink to the prosperity of both our cities.
*SLAP*
We will, of course, invite some of the more prominent local artisans to display their craft so that you may see for yourself the variety of colors we have already unearthed from our generous rainforest. These colors will naturally become more available once the main road is completed, connecting our town to the rest of the nation.
*SLAP*
But enough of that. Come now, and let me show you around the seaside oasis of Huntington. Besides, the closer to the beach we get, the less we have to deal with these infernal blood-suckers. *SLAP* ;)
ybbor Feb 12, 2004, 03:45 PM *comes soaked in mud with a boar coming after him*
whew! hope that jungle is gone soon, anyway, i am sugesting a motto such as now is dye time to _______ (i.e. act, paint, get drunk, swim, live, etc)
or this is dye place to be/live
FortyJ Feb 12, 2004, 03:54 PM Excellent timing Ybbor!
The assembled party watches as some of the men working on a nearby building intercept the boar and kill it mercifully.
Gentlemen, please deliver that to my house. We will roast it for the banquet tonight. I'm sure it will go wonderfully with this majestic wine. Ybbor, as you are responsible for delivering this meal to us, you must do us the honor of joining us tonight.
*SLAP*
We can discuss your proposed mottos over a glass of wine and roasted boar. Come, let us celebrate! Just one favor, eh? How about washing off some of that mud first?
FortyJ Feb 13, 2004, 11:05 PM 775 BC - Mayor's Report
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads6/DGIV_Hunt_775bc_work.gif
We have one workable tile inside our current are of control, and unfortunately, this tile produces no materials to assist in production. We desparately need to clear more tiles.
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads6/DGIV_Hunt_775bc_pfcg.gif
While Food and Commerce are nice, our Production needs to be increased.
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads6/DGIV_Hunt_775bc_dom.gif
As you can see, despite our small size, we make a respectable contribution to the national coffers. Both our gross and net contributions to our national revenue exceed the national per capita average. As we continue to grow, we will surely become a commercial center for the empire, rivaling even Deux Rivieres itself.
FortyJ Feb 13, 2004, 11:19 PM "Sire, are you sure this is wise?" asked the young man standing behind him, helping him on with his coat.
"Relax, Pierre", FortyJ said, as reassuringly as possible. "The road has been completed for some time and I promised myself that I'd visit the other towns once it was finished. It is high time that I fulfilled that promise."
"Yes, sir, but the reports of barbarian raids continue to come in. It's simply not safe to travel." replied the aide, meekly.
"It's safe enough" stated FortyJ with a finality that was not missed by his trusty aide. "Besides, it is time for us to share the wonders of our most colorful dyes with the rest of our nation."
"I'm certain your trip will be successful, sir" reassured the young man, who had casually positioned himself next to the main door to the mayor's chambers.
"I only hope that we can persuade the powers that be to continue expanding to the south before too long. Otherwise, I fear that the next settlement we see nearby will be Babylonian rather than Fanatican." FortyJ said, as he left his chambers.
"Let us hope it does not come to that" replied Pierre, following the mayor out into the hall.
truckingpete Feb 14, 2004, 11:55 AM Truckingpete looks at the mighty fine city off the coast... He has been at sea for day..months..even years every since he left the capital city..he doesn't remeber...All of a sudden a person comes out and calls himself the mayor... He says,"I am Mayor of Huntington. I am FortyJ. Come in and stay for awhile." I say,"Thank you kind person. I have been traveling for a long time."
*SLAP*
Then Truckingpete says,"By the way you have to get rid of that jungle, or at least get some bug spray.." *FortyJ and Truckingpete laugh.*
FortyJ..You are not the only person in this WONDERFUL city...
So I am happy to say that I am Movin' in!

Welcome to the great town of Huntington, the town with a lifestyle to dye for.
As our city's second official citizen, I invite you to join the village council to help shape the future of our great town. Together, I believe we will guide our city to becoming the envy of all the world. Or at least figure out a way to deal with these pesky bugs.

truckingpete Feb 15, 2004, 02:08 PM I would like to say that this lovely town is in the provience of Berry...
The citizens have votes for the provincial boarders in a poll and this is the winning one....

This proposal won by just by won vote...it was 10 votes and the other one was 9 votes...
So welcome to Huntington, Berry!!:D

I picked the colors Jungle Green, Light Blue, and Dark Blue...Plus I added a dye thing to the flag...
I picked these colors becuase:
Jungle Green: We have a lot of jungle by us.
Light Blue: We are right by the coast.
Dark Blue: Our boarders almost touch the sea/ocean.
I put the dye logo becuase we have dye in our city.
I like the # 2 the best.
Thanks!
Truckingpete
FortyJ Feb 15, 2004, 11:16 PM truckingpete,
I write you from just outside our national capitol. I am pleased to report that our travels are going well. I have already secured a dozen customers for dyes and our trip is just beginning. Tomorrow I will plead our case with the governor for more workers to help clear the jungles around our fair town.
With respect to the artist's rendition of our town, I apologize for that error. I'll make sure the artist includes that barn of yours in the next version.
I have instructed the courier here to return the flag samples you included in your letter to you for safe keeping. I like them all very much, but I think we should incorporate some of the national flag into our own. I'll commission one or two designs of my own for us to discuss later on.
In the meantime, keep the locals happy. I've given the courier a copy of my order placing you on the council, so by the time you receive this message, you will have all the authority of a council member.
Respectfully,
FortyJ
truckingpete Feb 16, 2004, 05:55 PM Mayor FortyJ,
You have been busy traveling. I hope your travels are still good. I agree for having some national flag in our fine town. One thing do, should we keep the dye logo? We have dyes in our city so I think we should. I can't wait for you designs for the flag.
I am much thankful for being on the council. I will do the best on the council.
Say to the artist that it is ok for that mistake. Everyone makes mistakes. he did a good job though.
Well that is it for now. I will try to keep these citizens happy the best I can.
Oh and another thing. There is talk about we visiting a new country to our north. The citizens think that we should build a galley to get to those unknown boarders. They want to build a galley in our town. We are the only town by the water. That's why they want to build it here. I think we should once the workers come.
Good luck on your travels!
Friend,
truckingpete
P.S. - If we build this galley, may I be first to command the ship if it possible. I would like to meet the new country.
ybbor Feb 16, 2004, 08:00 PM Mr. Mayor, i humbly come to you

truckingpete Feb 16, 2004, 08:44 PM Welcome ybbor!
May I be first to welcome you to Huntington! I see you have ment the bugs. We are working on the bugs.
*SLAP*
For the flag thing, that isn't offical. We are just requesting the flags right know. You may request if you want. I would like you to paint my house if you want. (Don't forget my barn.)
Right know Mayor FortyJ is on a trip do business for our wonderful dyes. He will be back shortly.
Welcome to Huntington ybbor!:goodjob:
FortyJ Feb 17, 2004, 10:05 AM 550 BC - Mayor's Report
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads6/DGIV_Hunt_550bc.jpg
We have one mined tile that is contributing to our overall production efforts, but this has now created a timing problem for us. And what is that strange looking individual in the southeast? More to follow...
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads6/DGIV_Hunt_550bc_box.jpg
Production, Growth and Commerce all are respectable considering our size.
<><><><><>
Due to the increased productivity from the mined grasslands in the east, our workers are destined to be recruited before our city can grow large enough to support them. Combine this with the fact that there are elite Babylonian warriors a mere 20 miles from town and it would seem prudent to ammend our production schedule somewhat.
Furthermore, there is great talk about constructing a sea-going vessel, something the experts are calling a galley, in hopes of exploring up the coastline and finding other nations with which to trade. I am pleased to say that Huntington is high on the list of suitable locations from which to construct such a vessel.
Therefore, I am proposing to the village council that we recommend to the governor the following production queue: Warrior (2), Worker (5), Galley (<15)
The galley would require no more than 15 turns to construct at our current rate of production, but it is likely that the workers will have completed the terrain improvements due east of town and that our productive capacity may increase, thereby shortening the amount of time needed to complete production. What says the council?

FortyJ Feb 17, 2004, 10:15 AM Ybbor,
Welcome to Huntington. I hope you find this town as lovely *SLAP* as we do.
Our Village Council is still seeking one more member and since you are our third registered citizen and due to your contributions to the town, I invite you to join the council and continue to serve the community as a councilman.
Once again, welcome and please let me know if we can be of any assistance in helping you get settled in.
Respectfully,
FortyJ
Lord Mayor of Huntington
FortyJ Feb 17, 2004, 11:47 AM Fellow citizens of Huntington. I offer for your consideration the following designs for our city flag.
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads6/DGIV_Hunt_Flag1.jpg
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads6/DGIV_Hunt_Flag2.jpg
truckingpete Feb 17, 2004, 05:31 PM Mayor ForyJ,
Ok, let me get down to bussiness. I like your proposal for the building queue. I AGREE with it. But may I say, that after the galley, build military. If Babolyon attacks, we will need defense. So after the galley I would to see another warrior or even a spearman to guard out city all the time.
May I request to go on the sea voyage to this new country to trade with. I will try to keep you posted daily on our trips. This trip might be dangerous because there is barbarians out in the sea I think. But I will be fine if you allow me to go.
I like you flag proposals very much. The black is a really good color. (What program are you using to make the flags?) THe first flag is different becuase of the pink thing coming down. The 2nd is the best I think. My I suggest that maybe the flag colors could be rainbow. (Like tye dye colors.)
Thanks you.
Friend,
truckingpete
ybbor Feb 17, 2004, 07:48 PM well, thanks for the welcome! i'll get to painting your houses/barns as soon as you tell me what colors you want. i like the first flag best, but may i suggest not having that pink stripe down the middle? i am interested in joinging the council, what would my responsibilities be?
FortyJ Feb 17, 2004, 09:08 PM Truckingpete,
I agree with your assessment, we will desperately need to contribute to the military effort, probably sooner than we'd like. In fact, if we can persuade the governor to produce a worker elsewhere and direct them to our town, then I would recommend that we remove the worker from the queue and recruit a warrior and then immediately switch to a galley.
The "black" in the flag is meant to be a very dark green to represent the jungle surrounding our town. The pink column in the center, dipping into the bowl of pink dye is designed to represent our town (and it's dyes) providing the very essence of our national flag, nay the nation itself.
As far as your desire to command the galley, I believe that the assignment of that position will fall under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Defense. However, I imagine that it would be prudent that we supply a representative from the shipyard to act as a liason to the military so that we can answer any questions they have as well as log any feedback so that we can implement any changes in future designs.
I encourage you to get more involved with the shipyard and assist them in the design and production of the prototype vessel. Feel free to update me on your progress, but be sure to use the standard couriers as there are foreigners roaming the countryside and I would hate for some priviledged information to fall into the wrong hands.
Keep up the good work at home. I should be back there shortly.
Respectfully,
FortyJ
<><><><>
Ybbor,
You don't like the pink? Our national color? What would you recommend in its place?
As far as serving on the council, the responsibilities are great and extremely time consuming, but I feel you are more than capable of handlng the job. We expect you to keep close tabs on the wishes and concerns of the citizens of our fair community. Also, the citizens expect you to govern the town (along with your fellow councilmembers) in the best interests of all Huntingtonians.
It is an elected position, and should more citizens move into town, we will begin conducting elections, including our own debates, etc. However, until that time, we only ask that you serve your community to your fullest potential as one of the founding councilmembers of the Huntington Village Council.
If you have any additional questions, feel free to ask either myself or Truckingpete.
Respectfully,
FortyJ
ybbor Feb 18, 2004, 07:41 AM i have no problem with the pink, it just doesn't seem tight down the center, what if we switched the drak green stripes and pink stripes? right now it seems like the pink is a beem coming from the dyes, which seems to cheesy to me. you are a fabulous artist, and i have n complaint in what you did, i'm just making a sugeestion.
i herby accept the position of city councilman
FortyJ Feb 18, 2004, 11:46 AM I hadn't thought of it that way, Ybbor, but I can understand your point. Here's yet another version for your consideration:
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads6/DGIV_Hunt_Flag3.jpg
ybbor Feb 18, 2004, 04:55 PM now that is good! :)
i'm still waiting for the colors you gys want...
truckingpete Feb 18, 2004, 06:11 PM Mayor FortyJ,
The recent flag that you posted looks excellent.
In you latest post to me, you said to ask the Minster of Defense. Where can I ask him to see if I could join on the voyage, and to ask him questions about this galley?? Is the Minster of Defense Sarevok?? How can I get involved in the shipyard??
Plus off our shore, we can see a new country that we can explore!! We are learning so much about this world.
I like to say I am starting a newspaper for Fantican... Here is the location..

I am going to busy trying to get the paper organized. I hope i can ge the first issue out soon..

Make it up. I was hoping to inspire you to post some creative stories about the development of the nation's first galley. For example, "Today we finally discovered some suitable lumber that we can use to build the prototype. This version will be built much smaller than the intended final version as we are not yet sure it will work as we hope, but we are still extremely excited to be able to finally get started."
Have fun with it. This also applies to the role of Village Council Member. Use your imagination, or do a little research, or both and post something about what a village leader might do. Be sure to keep it consistent with our level of technology though. It wouldn't be good if you posted about visiting day care centers or something similar as these institutions really didn't exist in 550BC.
Which brings up another point, specifically related to your newspaper idea truckingpete. Be sure that you don't include anything involving a printing press in your newspaper related posts. That tech is not yet available to us and including such technology would be in violation of CHD rules, which this thread has agreed to adhere to.

truckingpete Feb 19, 2004, 05:18 PM Dear Mayor FortyJ,
Step out of RPG mode for a little while...
For the newspaper thing, I will keep the printing press out until we get it. Plus I will use my imagination. I am a little new at the DemoGame...
continueing RPG mode...
The builders of this "galley" is using the wood from our beautiful jungle...*SLAP* These constructors are making a plan now to see how they are going to build it...They say it is going to be powered by "oars"?? I don't know what those are yet... They also say that they are going to put a big piece of faberic and top of this "galley"?? The call this piece of faberic a "sail"...It is supposed to help the wind push them into the sea...
I will continue to update you on this "galley"...

You can find this poll here (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=79363).
truckingpete Feb 20, 2004, 05:21 PM UPDATE ON BUILDING OF GALLEY
Here is the latest update for the galley building...
The designers of the boat have released a scetch. Here is the scetch:
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads6/galleypete.jpg
They are going to hire oarsmen whice get paided a HUGE amount of money!! By the way, an oar is a A long, thin, wooden pole with a blade at one end. They say that it is going to be safe for man to travel on water. It is giong to take a lot of money to build this galley. So say good luck to the designers....
Thanks!

Due to the thought of war with Babaloyn, may I suggest that sometime we should build a barracks so our units can survive more in battle..

Well, it seems that the regional government had other plans that what we local yokels desired, but the end result was that we have another worker clearing the jungle outside our town. Now, we need to change our direction to the much anticipated galley that the nation so desperately desires.

truckingpete Feb 21, 2004, 05:58 PM Once again, here is another update on the galley...
The builders decided to start building a galley in St.Octaviansburg. I will be gone a few days. I will be going to St.Octaviansburg for a little while to see how they are going to build this galley. The town is only about 40 miles away. I will have to go through jungle..no road yet. Plus I hear barbarians are everywhere. Wish me good luck and I will keep you updated!! Take good care of my animals in my barn!
P.S. - I see the people have built a shipyard by my house..I like it..I needed a dock for my ship anyway.
FortyJ Feb 21, 2004, 06:50 PM While it does seem that the most recent snafu by the regional government concerning our production queue will cost us the honor of producing the nation's first naval vessel, it is still overcomeable.
Perhaps we should consider producing a harbor to improve the productivity of the coastal waters.
Also, it seems that the results of our public opinion poll are in and that Flag #6 is the hands-down favorite. Shall the council accept this flag or shall we discuss this matter further?
Raven1er Feb 21, 2004, 10:40 PM FortyJ- I'll be residing in your city.

stepping out of RPG mode for a sec...
I'm not certain where that quotation of yours comes into the conversation, but I think you're confusing area with distance. A tile does represent 100 sq. miles according to the demographics. But, if we assume that a tile is a square, then each edge of the tile would be 10 miles long (10 mi x 10 mi = 100 mi ^2).
resuming RPG mode...
Attention Citizens of Huntington...
Be sure to come by the Village Hall to help celebrate the adoption of our new flag. There will be food and drink (including those world famous beverages from Montpellier) for all. Bards and Minstrels will be on hand for entertainment and at mid-day, we will raise the new flag in the front lawn for the first time.
We hope to see you there!

truckingpete Feb 23, 2004, 05:28 PM Due to the flag rising of our town, I will come back to Huntington as fast as I can...I will stay in Huntington to see if they build the galley. Thanks!

P.S. - I might be back early if I ride my horse very fast. I might be back tonight even.
Raven1er Feb 23, 2004, 05:33 PM I'm homeless. LOL
FortyJ Feb 24, 2004, 12:41 PM CivGeneral, Raven1er and all other citizens seeking residence (either part-time or year-round),
You are of course, welcome in our fair town. We'd prefer if you stay year-round, so as to enjoy the wonderful lifestyle we have created here, but we certainly understand if you only wish to stay during the most beautiful seasons of the year.
If you wish your residence to be included in the illustrations of our town, you need simply identify where your house is.
Also, all residents are eligible for the upcoming village council elections. Elections will commence tomorrow afternoon. Each citizen will be asked to vote for 3 candidates. The candidate receiving the most votes will be elected mayor while the 2 runners up will join him/her on the village council.

ybbor Feb 24, 2004, 06:49 PM so, do we need to announce our canidacyof village councilman/councilwoman, and are you going to create a poll in the poll thread, or are we posting who we want here?
FortyJ Feb 24, 2004, 10:08 PM Unless you state that you are not interested in running, you will be considered an elligible candidate and will be included in the election.
FortyJ Feb 25, 2004, 12:32 PM The elections for Village Council (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=79866) are open.
truckingpete Feb 25, 2004, 05:25 PM I like to say, may the best man/woman win!!
CivGeneral Feb 26, 2004, 12:34 AM CivGeneral arives in his home for a couple of days during his election for govenor. He stands alone in the moonlit night sipping a cup of tea.
CivGeneral: The night is full of the unknown. Who knows, I would be commanding an armarda of iron ships that blow fire. *Chuckle*
Political Advisor: Who knows what the future may hold.
truckingpete Feb 26, 2004, 07:50 PM Truckingpete stares out to the sea by his house. He has been living in Huntington for awhile. A lot has changed then. New citizens moved in whice are great friend. The city has grown. Grown more than any other city almost. We had threats of Babaloyn attacking us. This city has been through a lot and survived everything. The Mayor of this town is great. With elections going on, this town will become even greater who every is in charge of this beautiful country. *Truckingpete decides to take his boat and go a little night fishing.* After truckingpete gets back he decided something that got the people of this town scared...
I bet you are wondering what that is..well I am going traveling everywhere. I will travel in the desert and other towns. Just need a little adventure that's all. I will be back as soon as I can. I must visit these new towns that are being built. I will sell some dyes while I am traveling. Well see you later. (Don't worry I will come back to Huntington 2 days before Term 3 starts. Have to see who won the Mayor of Huntington. Then I will continue my wonderful travels.)

FortyJ Feb 29, 2004, 12:10 AM Thanks Truckingpete, but I think a change in our local government would benefit us all, so I withdrew/resigned shortly after the election had concluded.
The Village Council for the 3rd term will be Truckingpete, CivGeneral and Ybbor. I, of course, will remain on to assist the council in any way they see fit.
Congratulations to the new council!
truckingpete Feb 29, 2004, 11:58 AM Well, I will do the best I can..I am going to be busy this month....First issue of Fanatican Newspaper came out..That's why it will busy all this month too...the newspaper...

Our city has grown to size 2.
We have one red shield as you can see.
We have a spearman gaurding our city.
We have a Babylon Warrior in our city radius too.
We have a lot of jungle cleared out too. So not as many bugs!!:D
We are also building a barracks.

FortyJ Feb 29, 2004, 08:55 PM Fellow citizens and members of the Village Council,
It is wonderful to see our community growing, especially when the prospects for our town are so great. I am concerned that all of our workers are now working on tiles that are outside our radius of control. We should lobby the president to redirect at least one worker to our town full time so that we can stay ahead of our growth. Particulary, we should mine the tile due east of Huntington before we grow again to size three to ensure maximum production even after we grow.
truckingpete Feb 29, 2004, 09:02 PM Attaction Citizens of Huntington,
I agree that we should clear the jungle around us. Plus to have a worker always in our city radius to work the land. We want to grow big to be a city. Right now we are a town. If we clear the jungle we don't need and other tiles around us..we will be a city...If the Village Council agrees to take on the President for this jungle removment..I will gladly will..So do we agree??
From,
Mayor Truckingpete
FortyJ Mar 01, 2004, 09:17 AM Might I suggest that we not "take on" the president ;), but rather petition for at least one worker dedicated to our city full time. We really don't need to clear any more jungle for a short while since we have 4 workable tiles. We do need to mine all four of those tiles so that we can maximize our productive capacity as we grow.
I would also like to see a harbor constructed in our town as soon as possible. We should let the other, land-locked towns focus on armies and land-based military. We should lead the way in our nation's naval exploits, both militarily and commercially.
ybbor Mar 01, 2004, 10:22 AM oh yes, yes! dye the mines, er...mine the dyes, actually...maybe we should
*slap*
i think that was the last one, anyway, maybe if we paint the mines people will like it in there, and want to work there
truckingpete Mar 01, 2004, 05:37 PM FortyJ "take on" was just a expression..:crazyeye:
Anyway I have requested a worker to be here all the time and clear out most of the jungle. Plus, what should we do when we have cleared tiles? Shall we mine them or farm them? Or shall we just keep them blank?? I say we put half mining, other half farming. For the harbor, I will contact the governor to see if we could produce a harbor. First, shall we finish the barracks or just start on the harbor right away? It will take 27 turns to complete the harbor?
So shall we skip the barracks and produce a harbor to make a navy??
From,
Mayor Truckingpete
FortyJ Mar 01, 2004, 08:15 PM I would bypass the barracks and go straight for a harbor. We're going to need one and the harbor will generate extra food for us to grow as well.
If we do get the harbor, then I wouldn't irrigate any of the land tiles, but rather mine them all - we'll want that bonus production.
ybbor Mar 01, 2004, 09:37 PM yes, skip the barracks, i saw that and thouight "why are we building that?" but i din't really think of much more useful, and at first when i heard harbor i thought of useless upkeep, but when i thought about the point you raised of then bieng able to mine all squares...
truckingpete Mar 02, 2004, 04:58 PM Ok I will contact the governor and tell that the Village Council and the Citizens want a Harbor to be built, not a barracks. Plus I will tell him to mine all the tiles.
tao Mar 03, 2004, 12:56 AM May I draw your attention to the following:
After clearing the jungle, Huntington has 8 grasland tiles. If mined, each gives 2 food and 1-2 shields. With harbor, the water would give you 2 fod and 0 shields. Thus as long as you have grasland to work, you don't work the water.
Including 2 food from the city center, you have a total of 18 food from the gras, enough for population 9. But without aqueduct, Huntington cannot grow beyond size 6. Thus I don't see the current need for a harbor for reasons of population growth. It makes however very good sense to have at least 1 habor asap for trading purposes.
FortyJ Mar 03, 2004, 09:30 AM Good points Tao.
You assume, however, that all the jungle tiles will be cleared in time for laborers to work them. Given the fact that we now must petition the president for even a single worker to clear these tiles and mine the already cleared ones, it may be quite some time before we have all the jungle cleared.
Certainly an aqueduct will be needed for our town, but constructing it first would provide us with an improvement that will likely not be needed for a number of turns after it is completed. However, a harbor would begin providing benefits immediately after completion, while our laborers get to work producing an aqueduct just prior to when it will be needed for our town to grow into a city.
DaveShack Mar 03, 2004, 09:47 AM I'm not a resident, but...
A harbor will also help the citizens avoid disease from the jungle while they wait for it to be cleared, since water tiles can then be worked without inducing a food shortage. Working in the jungle is known to be bad for one's health.
FortyJ Mar 03, 2004, 11:08 AM Not to mention *SLAP* it's easier to concentrate *SLAP* on what *SLAP* you're doing.
truckingpete Mar 03, 2004, 05:02 PM Well, we are going to get all the jungle cleared. After that all of them will be mined. Plus our harbor will be built. Talk about good news. It will take a while to clear all the jungle, and to get all the tiles mined. So after all this is done we should be a city by then.
ybbor Mar 04, 2004, 05:38 PM war!maybe that barracks isn't so useless, although i would rather produce horsemen
truckingpete Mar 04, 2004, 05:41 PM War With Babylon!!!
If you haven't found out it...we are at war with Babylon. We are one of the closet towns to the enemy. So we need to talk about sending more troops guarding our city. We got this far, we are not giving up. If Babylon troops get in our cities radius, stay and fight..Don't panick...We will survive....
So shall we get more troops in our city???

It is for the Village Council to have meetings. I added a Ball Court too to have some fun. Enjoy!!
Balastulin Mar 04, 2004, 10:05 PM Balastulin, misunderstood and scourned by the many cities he had travelled through, finally stepped out of the jungle, exhausted and fevered from the malaria which had ravaged him and gazed upon Huntington. The crystal sea lovingly caressed the mangrove swamps around the town yet the people were lively and smiling. Glory upon glory though was the colour which danced before his eyes. Truly, had he found his place?
Mayor sire, I have travelled many of the cities of our wondrous empire and been refused all but meagre rations, sufficient to take my frame beyond the bounds of their city. Today I believe I have found a town in which I may grow old and happy. All I ask is for a small plot on the shore where I may watch the crucible of the sun pour its golden light into the boundless seas. I do drink heavily, yet I have much to offer, not the least those years I spent as a slave, my body broken and my spirit crushed in the barbarian shipyards ere I escaped. Many secrets of their construction I bring with me and lay at the feet of the good people of Huntington such that one day we may rule the oceans and my conscience may perhaps be laid to rest.
What say you, good people. May I count myself a resident? I humbly await your decision.
ybbor Mar 05, 2004, 04:20 PM what's that thing SW of the shipyard/truckingpete's house &barn?

FortyJ Mar 05, 2004, 11:05 PM Lord Mayor Truckingpete,
Your dedication to our town is beyond compare. It gives me great pride to call myself a citizen of this town.
I apologize for not letting you know sooner, but I have carved out a little slice of civilization from the wilderness across the water. While the only way to reach my house from town is by boat, I am not too far away to keep an eye on things. In fact, from my front lawn, I have an excellent view of your mansion. ;) (ie. the small patch of land E-NE of the Mayor's Mansion)
If I may digress for a second on a matter of business. Please encourage the president to put the workers outside our town to work mining the available grasslands as soon as possible. While clearing the jungle will surely benefit us down the road, we could benefit from the mining much sooner.
Until next time,

crest: hmm, like a seal?
Balastulin Mar 08, 2004, 08:57 PM Hey guys,
thanks for letting me join your fair town. It's a place to dye for.
I know I ain't been here long, but I've seen what people with pointy iron sticks can do, so I too vote for swordsmen, although if we stop war, I'd like to see a nice library, to store all our information on building ships and the techniques for producing those wonderful artworks.
And last thing. If I could possibly have a place on the coast to the right of the ball court (up and left from FortyJ's boat.) Talking of the ball court, who fancies a game?
truckingpete Mar 09, 2004, 06:25 AM Okay. Let me get down to bussines...
FortyJ, I would be glad to contact the governor about your issues.
Next, I will make a poll what we shall build next. When there is a mixed vote, we call for the citizens to a vote on a poll. (Did that make sense?? ) I will post on the message after I get the poll up. Plus I want more motto requests. The I too, will make a poll on it unless we all agree..Plus we want Crest (AKA Seal) requests.
I think that is it.
Thank you..

EDIT 2 : Here is the poll...

FortyJ Mar 09, 2004, 10:35 AM Lord Mayor,
First, let me thank you and the artist responsible for such a lovely rendition of my quaint little home on the waterfront. Please feel welcome to come by for a visit any time.
I have some suggestions for the handling of our village affairs that I would like you to convey to our regional governor.
We should relocate our laborer currently toiling in the dye fields east of town to the mined grasslands due north of town, as long as the extra shields produced are not wasted. This should reduce our production time on the harbor from 12 turns to 9.
We should mine the dye fields to maximize the production from that tile.
By the time the harbor is completed, we should be size 4, and hopefully have the dyes mined and being worked, thereby producing 5 shields per turn after the effects of corruption and waste. If we need units, then we should begin producing spearmen to aid in the defense of our nation, but if we are in no immediate need of units, we should build a barracks in preparation of more offensive-minded units.
Until next time,
FortyJ

Balastulin Mar 10, 2004, 10:21 PM Excellent, though I profess that I'm really not that good. I'm more used to a strange game they played from my home village where the field is round and they hit a leather ball with sticks. It's called cricket and it's very popular, though I'm not sure it would fit in well in this town.
However, the painting of our town does make it look decidedly like an oval pitch!

Second...What are we going to make after a swordsman?? Shall we build a city improvment..or another unit??
Thank you!!
Mayor Truckingpete
ybbor Mar 14, 2004, 09:10 AM why's that guy unhappy? crowdedness right? anyway, i see no advantage in making him happy, also, i say we continue to build military units
tao Mar 14, 2004, 12:09 PM Dear Citizens of Huntington,
may I suggest to you not building swords but horsemen. Soon there will be those nasty creatures called pikemen, defense 3, 4 if fortified. And our poor swordsmen will die. Swords are powerful in the Ancient Age, but a dead-end unit. No upgrade in plain Civ. (Only in C3C they can advance.)
Horsemen on the other hand are fast in reaching the enemy, can retreat if red-lined, and can be promoted to strong knights and earth-shattering cavalry.
Build horsemen! Please!!
truckingpete Mar 14, 2004, 02:08 PM Dear Toa,
You have a point...a good point...(I keep thinking this in C3C but it isn't.) So I will have to agree with you. Once we are done researching Feudalism..the horseman can upgrade (to knight.) So I decided to switch it too horseman becuase it is a smart chioce. We might build Pikemen too...So we are going to build a horseman. Pretty soon we will have to build an aqueduct so we can continue growing...So we will build horseman for a little while...When we get to size size, I think we shall build and aqueduct...All agree??
Thank you.

Balastulin Mar 14, 2004, 07:13 PM Sorry about being so angry. I've cooled down now, though it wasn't the crowdedness, it's just that I'm so bad at basketball that Ybbor beat me 146-3 (a freaky three pointer that bounced off a passing citizen who incidentally is now unhappy as there are no medical expenses and he wants the ball court closed down. No way, I say.)
What to build next. Horsies are always nice, though are we sure that we want to sanction the young blood of Huntington to fight in wars far off. I'd dearly like to see a Library built to spread the knowledge we have and to acquire the knowledge we don't.
Excellent work on my house there by the way. Thank you so much. I can send humorous jokes over to FortyJ with flag signals and watch the sun set with a glass of Montpellier 325.
FortyJ Mar 14, 2004, 08:34 PM I once again propose that we build a barracks before building any offense-oriented units. Our nation needs heros - great leaders to lead us into the troubling times ahead. These leaders will not emerge from regular troops, but rather from elite units. We would be foolish to send troops into the field of battle without training them first.
I say we build a barracks and then begin recruiting horsemen to aid in the war effort.
truckingpete Mar 14, 2004, 09:31 PM Dear FortyJ,
I have to agree with you..We should build a baracks so our units can last longer in battle..So first we will build a barracks..then some horsemans...

@Citizens,
Do we all agree on just keping the unhappy person..well unhappy?? Keep in mind once we grow bigger there will be more unhappy citizens....
Thanks!

Balastulin Mar 14, 2004, 09:52 PM Barracks - let the city of Huntington be renowned for its fearsome warriors. A city of heroes, clad in the most beautifully coloured fabrics of course.

FortyJ Mar 16, 2004, 09:55 AM Yeah, I know... you hear those reports of Spring Break locales where the girls outnumber the guys 3 to 1 and you're thinking "Awesome", but let me assure you. Once you're forced to live with them full time, with no chance of parole, it's another story altogether. :D

I like to bring this up to the Village Council...
We have 2 unhappy citizens. Like I said before, when we grow more the citizens become more unhappy. (This time a man and a woman are unhappy.) The President said to hire an entertainer, so I did. Plus we aren't growing anymore!!! What are we going to do. We can't stay at size 5 forever. Shall we build an aqueduct??
That us it..
From,
Mayor Truckingpete
EDIT: Not a entertainer.. A mean Tax collector!!

Dont tell me, They are having communication problems ;).
Anyway. I do think that after the barracks have been done that a settler should be built to ease the unhappyness problems.
Balastulin Mar 17, 2004, 08:42 PM We have an evil tax collector, not a fun-loving entertainer. Personally, I think there's too much crime going on and I don't feel overly safe so would like to suggest that we train another band of people to become spearmen. That'll ease the population's fears?

FortyJ Mar 17, 2004, 10:22 PM Lord Mayor Truckingpete and the Village Council of Huntington,
Despite our upcoming festivities, I write today with a heavy heart, for what I am witnessing does not make me feel like celebrating much.
It seems that despite our switch to a Republican form of government, that our elected leaders refuse to increase the funding for entertainment throughout the nation. To complicate matters, they expect us to continue to recruit military units to fight this war. Sadly, in order to accomplish this, we must sacrifice our ability to grow.
If I were governor of our province, I would insist that the Congress increase entertainment funding immediately or I would halt all production of military units and improvements in favor of temples so that our towns can continue to grow. If our leaders wish us to fight this war for them, then it is only fair that they provide us with some entertainment to keep the people content.
Keep up the good work. I look forward to seeing everyone at the celebrations planned for this weekend.
Respectfully,
FortyJ
truckingpete Mar 18, 2004, 05:31 PM Dear FortyJ,
I think the war is over with Babylon...If You mean another war..what war?? Yes with this new government, we will have to get used to it...It will take awhile BUT it is an improvment from the last government...I have also heard that people don't want to increase the entertainment...If this continues, we will be out of control...Don't think it won't get that far though (Hope not)...But the party will continue..Maybe we can talk our mines off of all this...Like I said, we need a little break..
If you are nominated for governor...I would gladly vote for you!!We need new blood anyway...You would be a great governor, but he election is far away...
From,
Mayor Truckingpete

Are that is new is the library to learn!! Has information about all over the world...Don't forget to get a library card!!!
FortyJ Mar 25, 2004, 09:17 PM Sign me up.. Heck, I'll even volunteer to help out around the stacks of books.
By the way, any ideas on where our soon-to-be-completed temple is going to be constructed? I figure it's only a matter of time before someone's going to be forcefully evicted to make room for one of our improvements.
Once the temple is complete, we should look to construct a means of getting some fresh water to our fair town. I'd wager that would allow us to grow even larger than our current size. once that is done, there would be nothing stopping us from becoming the envy of Fanatica.
Respectfully,
FortyJ
PS. When are the elections going to open?

I'd wager that would allow us to grow even larger than our current size. once that is done, there would be nothing stopping us from becoming the envy of Fanatica. Please allow me to ask why you build the temple NOW. Why not build the aqueduct before the temple? You can grow to size 7 without needing a temple for happiness. And having the temple will not speed up building the aqueduct.
Balastulin Mar 25, 2004, 11:50 PM I second that idea. If we get an aqueduct up and going, we will be the pride of Fanatica. A great city with a great future. A temple would follow in just eight turns, probably seven if you include the extra population. And once we're happy and growing, we'll never look back.
truckingpete Mar 27, 2004, 11:12 AM I see I have a lot of questions to answer now...well here I go...
First, I didn't request the temple to be built. The governor did. the good news is that when it is complete our citizens will be happy. I will try to request the governor to build the aquduct.
Hope you guys are enjoying the library. Did you know that Fanatica was at war with Babylon for awhile..Oh oops, I bet you already knew that.
Now on to the elections!! Everybody here is nominated. To un -nominate..post it here. I will not be running for Mayor again Everybody needs a chance. This was the best term every!! The new Mayor should know the drill by now. Post updates on town etc...I will be running for Governor at-Large. Wish me luck!!
See you at the polls!!:D
P.S. - Polls will go up on Mar. 29th. Will be open for roughly 24 hours. The once the vote is complete, I will post and say welcome to the new Mayor. (It is like giving a person knighthood, but in this case, Mayor-Hood...:D)
Mayor Truckingpete
tao Mar 29, 2004, 12:05 PM I regret having to tell you that building the granary currently is an absolute nono. Granaries help cities to grow faster. But Huntington currently cannot grow at all. You need to build an aqueduct first.
However, if we go to war against Egypt as outlined here (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?s=&postid=1715477#post1715477), it would be in the very best interest of Fanatica to switch to galley now, even request money to hurry the galley, and build the aqueduct afterwards.
Even then, you have to face the fact that Huntington is low in shields, because there are no mountains, hills, or plains. And until railroads you can do nothing to change this. Thus I would build a market and/or university instead of the granary. But it is not my decision.
truckingpete Mar 29, 2004, 05:07 PM Okay tao...
the governor is ignoring my decisions..So it is not my..I keep requesting, but the governor won't change 'em. You will have to talk to the governor about this. I am trying the best I can!!
Anyway, everyone must be in elections...So I will post a poll. You can see it in the Poll Fourm....
Thanks!
Mayor of Huntington
Balastulin Mar 29, 2004, 10:42 PM I think that we have been partying a little too hard recently, as the idea to build a granary when we have no food to put into it is quite clearly insane. I blame the bureaucrats. Now, if we had an aqueduct, not only would be able to support a larger population but I might have a chance of getting rid of this stinking hangover.
truckingpete Mar 30, 2004, 05:52 PM The results are in from the polls for the next Mayor of Huntington... Here are the results...
Balastulin - 3
FortyJ - 5
Ybbor - 5

I'm a bit saddened that you elected not to run for re-election TP. Any chance you'll consider staying on and serving a second term?
