OK, first game finished:
I was the Americans on the huge world map with 7 AIs (yeah, I'm a chicken...). Regent, because I got SMOKED on Deity and the one below that (can't remember the name...). Everything else standard...
Game starts, I'm in North America (surprise!), but on the west coast, anyway. The Aztecs are in New Mexico, I'm thinkin' what the hell?? Semi correct placement or what??? But I quickly find out, that the Chinese are in Brazil, phew, I was worried there for a sec ;).
Game goes along smoothly, I completely overrun the Aztecs, thaoug in the peaceful way (I surround them with cities to prevent them from settling in North America). I am very effective *happy*, they get like 6 cities in total, none powerful and all in Mesoamerica. Anyway, Eurasia is crowded: Babylonians, Germans, English, Russians, French, all beating up on each other, and yet still better than me... I wonder... The Persians are on Australia and threaten to pull away, both culturally and technologically, but for some reason which I am not able to discern, they do not... Lucky me;).
Anyway, by 1 AD I was all over NA, and my worst enemy BY FAR was Corruption, maybe half my cities were producing, researching, etc. While the other half were just sitting there with tons of food and a production of 1 (yes one) shield... I actually played very peacefully, not fighting until 1720... However, I continued improving terrain, and building, building, building. I switchd to Republic, hoping for a reprise from corruption... Nah-ah, not with these rules! I don't think I noticed any change from Despotism to Republic! That's CRAZY, not that there seemed to be any difference betweeen Democracy and Republic by 1430 AD... BUT by then I already had the Forbidden Palace! In this particular game easily my most important building! After its construction my to-be-empire quickly became one, I pulled ahead in science, and thus in culture as well because I always got a head start on the wonders, etc. So, by 1700 the world was ripe for war! for the past 1000 years nothing much militarily had happened, but now all hell began to break loose...on the Germans! The Persians an the English first, and for 200 years, with maybe 10 peace years in between, tey continuously remained not only at war, but in contiuous battle! I was VERY impressed by the AIs viciousness. I, since I always had a thing for the underdogs, offer to support the Germans, they gladly accept! YEEHAAAA, I kick the Aztecs with my newly acquired tanks and artillery (man, bombarding rulez sooo much :)). The Germans actually transport over from Africa to capture two Aztec cities in the Carribbean, they never ceased to amaze me.. But corruption, my eternal hated companion, kicks in again, the captured Aztec cities in Mesoamerica are worth...less-than-****... But I keep them, as a buffer againt the Iroquois and Chinese in SA. By no I am way ahead in science, not in terms of Civ2, e.g. they still can only build galleys, but I am at least 5-10 technologies ahead. By 1760 I find out that the English HAVE tanks and the Germans DON'T... So I figure, I'll give them their Panzers, they deserve it! But, I cannot just give them the technology that is required, NO, I have to supply the entire tree leading to that advance which is as of yet still unknown to the Germans, thats like 5 technologies... Oh well, give them panzers I say :).
It is now 1820, the Germans are beat, just holding on, with literallly every Nation, except me, at war with them, they are barely clinging on to their territory, I have made a plan of bombing the **** out of the English, I set up a colony in the Philippines by 1840, everything takes so long, it seems.... So I begin bombing the English in Vietnam, I divert practically their entire fleet and large parts of their airforce, which is good for the Germans and bad for me... But I manage and kill approximately 30 Man-O-Wars, but they manage to kill 2 Battleships, and, sniff, 2 fully loaded carriers... They do this by sending in massive amounts of low tech ships to bombard my ships and then sacrifice 2 or 3 ships to kill them off. Again I am amazed... And angry!!!!! Once the Persian and English battleships appear on the scene, I start to get into trouble, but due to my massive bomber force in the Philippines (15+) I can hold them off and even kill some. In this phase I find out that subs SUCK, my nuclear sub got killed by a man-o-war! 6 attack is waaaaay to low, and movement 3 is too little, should be 4. It is now 1850, I am still in a Democracy, and all of a sudden... 90% of my cities go into a civil disorder!!!!!! I thought war weariness was a slowly accumulating effect!!! Well, I might not have checked my cities for the past two turns, but thats still more like a lightning fast rebellion out of the (blood-drenched-)blue :). Anyway, I can make peace with everyone, lucky me, and from now on I watch the Germans get eaten up, on the side the backward Babylonian Empire is reduced to one city... But noone really cared about them, they were just in the way... And then, OH NO, the Persians strat their spaceship!!! Soon to be followed by the Chinese, and I don't even have the Apollo program, being to lazy to build it... I start it, and I finish it, from now on, for the first time in the game, my strategy is set... I never liked this part in Civ2: You build the Apollo program, and if the ame was fun, e.g. there was competition, you'd have to start the spaceship. Or, if the game was normal, e.g. the AI was hopelessly backwards, you got the spaceship just to get it over with ;). Anyway, by 1900 my space ship is finished, you only need 10 parts, all unique, to finish it, you can't rush, like wonders, and once you launch, you win :) Because there is no differing flight times anymore. I loved every minute of the game, especially the bombardment of the Aztecs and the English :) It was just so much fun. Ah, on to my next game then, this time on the equivalent of King :).
One thing I noticed however: Wars do not pay off! Capturing is only viable for cities closeby, courthouses reduce corruption only marginally. And razing, well, that just means that your supply lines get longer and longer, realistic, yes, maybe, ut still... And razing and resettling poses the same problems as capturing with the exception of no need to worry about resistance.. And you'd have to build the settlers...
I'll try a commercial civ next time, maybe they have less corruption issues...
