Corn Shucker Feb 14, 2004, 06:57 PM Just a simple question. "What is the best Unit Creation Program, and where can I find it?" I've given up on makeing unit requests, I've decided to take things into my own hands :) So Please, anyone who is experianced in unit creation, let me know.

Corn Shucker Feb 15, 2004, 09:02 AM Yes! I just noticed that :D Thinking of one :D lol.
Corn Shucker Feb 16, 2004, 06:34 PM How to use Paint?
ShiroKobbure Feb 17, 2004, 01:38 PM I have poser, it lets me make 3d units but you need another to make it civ colored
Corn Shucker Feb 17, 2004, 05:30 PM hmm im confused, could you plz was that post about paint or sumthin else :D
subbss Feb 17, 2004, 05:49 PM He is saying that he uses a different program called Poser.
Gogf Feb 17, 2004, 06:07 PM Download FLICster, and Jasc Paint Shop Pro. Then read a FLICster tutorial, that's how I learned to do it. I would use Poser, but it's quite expensive, and I don't have it :(. If you still need help, I'll link you to another tutorial :).
Ulyaoth Feb 17, 2004, 06:09 PM gogf could you please post the link to the thing you said you use? I need something for that.
Gogf Feb 17, 2004, 06:15 PM Which thing?
Corn Shucker Feb 17, 2004, 06:33 PM ok i downloaded FLICster, but Didn't know how to make units! just how to view already made ones, what do i do?
aaglo Feb 17, 2004, 11:41 PM Hi,
Easily the best unit creation program to date is Pov-ray ( www.povray.org ) :crazyeye:  . I use that.
Enjoy the complete freedom of doing whatever you like/can :p . Don't be restricted to using the available extremely detailed and beautiful props - instead build everything from basic shapes like box, cylinder, sphere, cone and torus
;) :p (equivalent to j/k)

;) :p (equivalent to j/k) I take this as a joke. If you're not joking on the part that you're actually using that completely text based graphics software to do such quality units, you either have lots of patience, or you're a genious!
I abandoned Pov-ray from version 2.0! I'd prefer OpenFX to POVRay on any given second!
aaglo Feb 18, 2004, 04:46 AM Like I said, that's what I use :)
Gogf Feb 18, 2004, 07:39 AM POV-Ray is text based?

@Gogf: Yes, POV Ray is completely text based, freeware and open source. It's ment to actually be a good freeware software, good at handling photo-realistic 3D rendering.
For modelling purposes, Moray is usually used and the graphics are then carried over to POV-Ray and rendered there.
@aaglo (again): :worship:
aaglo Feb 18, 2004, 02:36 PM I have also moray, but I don't use that (I haven't got the time to learn to use that  ) - so every thing is completely written...
#declare aaglo = mad ;)
Drift Feb 18, 2004, 02:46 PM You know aaglo, I did have a lot of respect for you prior to this thread, but now... Maybe Grandraem needs help with the cathedral. :worship:
I remember you saying that POV-ray has a learning curve of at least 1 year and that it's not very user friendly, but had someone told me of a 3d software that is used by typing, I would've laughed. A lot.
Gogf Feb 18, 2004, 03:24 PM Aaglo, can you maybe take a screenshot of what the text writing of one of your units looks like? I just have to see this. I can't believe you are making these units out of text, and finally understand why that windjammer would be so hard :worship:.
aaglo Feb 18, 2004, 03:34 PM Well, this is a part of the page that makes the rendered pic. Note the pink arrow, it just shows how much of the page is hidden further down.

Corn Shucker Feb 18, 2004, 04:17 PM Wow. Ok. Holy crap. So this "POV-ray" is the best program, but to me it looks impossible to use lol. How the heck did you learn all that junk? Is it easy to lear? lol.
Corn Shucker Feb 18, 2004, 04:26 PM oh and btw, aalgo, are you getting my pms?! lol havent heard from you yet.
Gogf Feb 18, 2004, 06:02 PM http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads6/dropmouth.gif  That's amazing Aaglo. I can't believe you can make these things that way!
Ulyaoth Feb 18, 2004, 07:54 PM that actually looks like a good program to use. If you know coding and stuff learning that should be a sinch. But still, gogf, I meant what program you use to make units, I need something user friendly to learn on.
Aluminium Feb 18, 2004, 08:35 PM Käynnistä is a long word for Start ;).
aaglo Feb 18, 2004, 11:36 PM It's quite easy to use, after you've done everything in the tutorial :)
Risbinroch Feb 19, 2004, 03:43 AM A question aaglo: You do absolutely everything with pov-ray? Only the program and the files included? All the textures and stuff too?
Do you use this program for animation and all? Ever considered doing a tutorial on how to make one of your units?
aaglo Feb 19, 2004, 04:48 AM Yep, I do everything except the following with pov-ray:
- I edit palettes with the palette editing tool (dl'd from the utilities forum)
- I make storyboards with SBB-utility (from the utilities-forum)
- I apply the palettes to the storyboards (an handle other copy&paste stuff) with paint shop pro 5
- I make unit flics with flicster
I don't know if I will make a tutorial on how to make units with pov-ray. But I have uploaded many pov-files in this forum for people to see what are the units made of :) (I don't know where it is, but I think I posted them last summer in this general forum).
Yes, pov-ray can do animations too.
