View Full Version : Lost in the sea, with alliances, 8 humans PBEM
Arrogant Feb 15, 2004, 08:31 AM Damn, those PBEM games move slowly. The best antidote is to make more of them.
Ok, another twisted game. Rules as follows:
C3C 1.15, with obligatory installation of any future patches
Archipelago, 80% water
No barbarians
No seafaring or expansionist civs allowed
Obligatory alliance with the first civ you meet (unless already allied with someone else, of course). This will eventually form 4 alliances of 2 players each
Level: Monarch, Map size: Standard, Climate: Arid, Temperature: Cool, Age: 5 Billion, Culturally linked starting locations: Off, Cultural conversions: Allowed, Preserve Random Seed: On
All victory conditions on, except Wonder & Diplomatic
Other rules as usual
Participants should specify:
Desired Civilization
Time zone (GMT) and times they can play
E-mail address
Credit card details (I hope they fall for this)
Astorian Feb 15, 2004, 10:09 AM I will play.
preferably Ottomans
GMT
zen39025@zen.co.uk
looking foward to it
DogBoy Feb 15, 2004, 01:43 PM Sign me up! I see a world dominated by India!
Civ is India
Time zone is GMT-5 and I play at night which will be 0100-0400 GMT.
e-mail is greeneclan AT mchsi DOT com
I have a question tho. After the game is down to just the two people left, do we have to fight each other?

No, I will spare the life of my former ally. :D
Maybe the game will not reach this point... the allies of the last two players may have already been wiped out.... but if it does, I suggest that the two winners should not fight each other. This will allow the players to focus more on their alliance without having towards the endgame the thought that they will soon have to fight their ally. Such a thought may jeopardize their good relationships and make it more like a game without alliances. Of course, if they both agree to fight each other after everybody else is dead, nothing can stop them
Arrogant Feb 15, 2004, 03:07 PM I've also been thinking of a few other changes for a kinkier gameplay:
Climate: Arid
Temperature: Cool
Age: 5 Billion
The age setting will allegedly reduce the clustering of terrains, so that it will make it less probable for a civ to end up on an island with just one or two terrain types. I think this will even up things somewhat.
Let me know if you agree.
Astorian Feb 15, 2004, 06:24 PM There will be a lot of desert and tundra, making those plains and grassland all the more valuable.
We won't be short of oil thats for sure!
DogBoy Feb 15, 2004, 06:36 PM Any settings you want are fine with me. Something different is always good. Would get kinda boring if everygame were pangaea and normal settings, eh?
magog Feb 15, 2004, 07:30 PM this game sounds cool. no real naval battles in single player. let's put those rusting pleasure boats to some real use!
so, can I join? i'd like to take the greeks modified as, lemme see, eh, the croatians? yes! my email: e.jakub@centrum.cz, loc. GMT +1
fanste Feb 15, 2004, 11:10 PM game settings sound... interesting :D

theforceman Feb 17, 2004, 06:35 AM Arrogant, how about if you edit the first post, saying two more players wanted?
Arrogant Feb 17, 2004, 08:29 AM Done, in a rather blatant way :D
Arrogant Feb 18, 2004, 01:39 AM ....and BUMP again. We need 2 more players.

I'm pretty flexibile I could play a turn anywhere from 8 am my time to 12 evening. Just depends on my day. Most likely I'll check multiple times per day.
Looken forward to it
Arrogant Feb 18, 2004, 07:00 AM Now we need 1 more player :)
Kaboth, please post the times you can play
CaptainCommando Feb 18, 2004, 04:19 PM I'll play! Not sure what Civ though..... never really play Archipelago... gotta decie that pretty quick.
My E-Mail is: captainketchup_@hotmail.com
Also, I have no life and can pretty much play anytime, I'm on Pacific time, western U.S.
Ok, I think i'll play as Korea, never played as them before.
DogBoy Feb 18, 2004, 04:25 PM Captain Commando, he said no seafaring or expansionist civs. But if there is none left, I'm sure he will allow it. As for playing a PBEM, it's really easy. You will get an e-mail from the person before you with the .sav attachment. Simple put that .sav file in your save folder. Then start civ3 conquests and select load game. Load that save. On your first turn you can enter a password if you want. Make sure you remember your password. Then you play your turn. When you are done with your turn. Hit the end turn button (the little blinking orange light at the bottom right hand corner in every game). It will ask you to save the game. Save the game and it exits. Send that save file to the person after. That's all there is to it.

CaptainCommando I have assumed you can play between 12 noon and 12 midnight your time. Is it ok ?
I'd prefer if everyone would specify a password in their first turn and send all passwords to me (the host of the game already has the administrative password so you have to trust him anyway). But I'll use the passwords in case we need a replacement.
Kaboth Feb 18, 2004, 04:47 PM I edited my post about 10 hours ago the times are there. I'll just post them here to anywhere from 8am to 12 evening I'm likely to check my email. I'm really quite flexible and will ussully check multiple times per day. So fit me wherever suitable.
Arrogant Feb 18, 2004, 05:05 PM Here's my proposal for the playing order. If there are no objections I'll start it and send the first turn to Astorian in less than 11 hours so that he can play it.
Kaboth - Aztecs - GMT+10 (can play 00-14 & 22-24 GMT) joshthecybs AT hotmail DOT com

DogBoy Feb 18, 2004, 05:09 PM looks good, send it
Kaboth Feb 18, 2004, 05:21 PM Yep lets play
magog Feb 18, 2004, 05:58 PM yes, let's start.
I have a few questions about the rules of the alliances, though.
1/ As cultural conversions are allowed, is overtaking an ally's city through culture going to be considered a violation of the alliance? Or do we have to rebuff the rebels? In other words is "cultural war" possible?
2/ What are going to be the sanctions against a possible violator of the alliance?
3/ Does the alliance mean necessary RoP AND mutual protection pact or should it be understood as just the simplest of non-agression deals?
4/ Can we have spies with the ally? (and the occasional production sabotage :-)?)
5/ How can it be assured that one of the allies doesn't scheme against the other with the other players?
there may be other things needing clarification, this is just what came to my mind first. I think these issues are not so important for the first few turns, so we can settle them while playing.
Any ideas?
Kaboth Feb 18, 2004, 06:52 PM Yes good questions though I don't believe siding with the enemy against your teamate would be wise as when they are defeated you are all alone.
As these alliances are permanent I would be giving all my tech to fellow allies for free and expect them to reciprocate. Also if two civs begin on the same archipeligo island must they still be allies as this could lead to heated land disputes though it has great advantages also.
magog Feb 18, 2004, 07:10 PM quote:
I don't believe siding with the enemy against your teamate would be wise as when they are defeated you are all alone.
well, yes and no. you can secretly betray your ally and let a foreign civ take his cities. up to this point yes. But the newly taken cities will probably be full of corruption and no culture. If you have your core cities on that island continent you can easily take over the once-your-ally's cities and expand in the most badly needed area of your home continent, note that one city on your continent is worth many a faraway outpost. So, you would end up alone but huge and more powerful than ever. Or am I pushing it too far? :-)
Nothwithstanding this, I am absolutely resolutely positively not planning on bringing these cute little evil strategies into the game. I am a natural born fairplayer, to make sure.
Kaboth Feb 18, 2004, 07:43 PM Good I was kind of afraid you might end up my natural ally :D
BTW where'd you get your name magog? Heroes of Might and Magic 3?
CaptainCommando Feb 18, 2004, 09:02 PM Yeah, I can play 12 noon to 12 at night, thats perfect. I'm on a semi-homeschool program and only go to school every other day, and even then only until noon.
So yeah, lets start the game, this is my first PBEM and i'm looking forward to it :)
Arrogant Feb 19, 2004, 01:47 AM Good questions :goodjob: Here's what I propose:

This should be allowed since if it isn't, one might have to get out of his way to prevent it. Cultural conversions are not violation of the alliance.
2/ What are going to be the sanctions against a possible violator of the alliance?
We can discuss it, but I propose no sanctions. This is like asking what will be the sanctions in case someone keeps disbanding his own units :D If one thinks he doesn't need his ally and can win by himself, well, let him try. He could end up with a pissed off ally :D
3/ Does the alliance mean necessary RoP AND mutual protection pact or should it be understood as just the simplest of non-agression deals?
No, not necessarily, but I think that at least RoP between allies is common sense so that they can use each other's roads.
4/ Can we have spies with the ally? (and the occasional production sabotage :-)?)
I suppose so, if you think that it is at your best interest.
5/ How can it be assured that one of the allies doesn't scheme against the other with the other players?
Again, we don't need to. Anyone who thinks he can make it alone is welcome to try.
Personally, I intend to fully trust my ally, let his units around my cities, give all tech and resources to him, let him know about my plans etc. I don't think that any other way would be better for me.
BTW, as soon as we see someone, and before he sees us, we should post here who our ally is. This is necessary because it is possible for two players to discover the same third player in the same round, and then they will both think he will be their ally. So, as soon as you see the first civ post here and let us know who he is.
fanste Feb 19, 2004, 02:50 AM Yep, good answers, i think the rules are sound and solid, and... looking forward to the first turn :)
Arrogant Feb 19, 2004, 03:47 AM 4000 BC sent to Astorian around 10:00 GMT
Please, everyone, don't forget to enter a password when the prompt appears, and e-mail or pm it to me asap.
Good luck!
theforceman Feb 19, 2004, 05:45 AM Yep, good answers, i think the rules are sound and solid, and... looking forward to the first turn
I second that. Good luck everyone!
Astorian Feb 19, 2004, 06:32 AM 4000BC sent to theforceman at around 12.30 GMT
good luck eveyone!
theforceman Feb 19, 2004, 03:41 PM 4000 BC sent to Magog. My mail program wouldn't let me send the mail at first, but now it seems to work. Tell me if you didn't receive it.
CaptainCommando Feb 19, 2004, 07:09 PM Think there is any hope of one turn/day, or are our schedules/timezones too different? Damn, why can't you all be as lame as me?
magog Feb 19, 2004, 09:32 PM 4000 BC sent to DogBoy - India 0258 GMT

I tried sometime ago to set up a really fast game (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=74746) with 8 humans. I got 2-3 players but no more. If you are interested you may sign up over there and maybe we'll get this baby moving again.
Games with 3-4 players can be fast but I already play a lot of normal MP with 3 friends so what I really miss is the 8-people stew.
magog Feb 21, 2004, 07:06 AM hi, thanks for the answers, not really exhaustive but let's hope the alliances will hold.
i am just writing to excuse myself from the game till tuesday night. sorry for the inconvenience, but no can do. it is just these two weekends now and a week in march, so, pls, don't be too mad at me.
Ad Kaboth: "BTW where'd you get your name magog? Heroes of Might and Magic 3?"
No, Revelation. (not a video game yet, or is it?)

No problem, as long as we know it beforehand. What I hate is wondering what the heck happened...
CaptainCommando Feb 21, 2004, 05:48 PM Yeah, so long as we know you're gonna be gone it's fine, just if someone disapears for a week and nobody knows what's going on it sucks.
CaptainCommando Feb 22, 2004, 06:39 PM Umm, it's been four days since Dogboy posted here, and he still hasn't sent me the save....
DogBoy Feb 22, 2004, 06:49 PM That's because I don't have the save. I visit this forum constantly, but not much has been happening. Magog said he was going to be gone all weekend. My guess is the save is in his e-mail inbox waiting for him to get home to play it.
CaptainCommando Feb 22, 2004, 08:21 PM Oh..... damn.
Guess we'll just have to hang tight for awhile.
He said he sent it though..... guess there was an error.
Rocinante Feb 23, 2004, 11:04 PM Shameless solicitation alert!!
Am looking for a few players for my first attempt at hosting a PBEM game.
click here (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=79694)
Arrogant Feb 25, 2004, 03:18 AM magog, in case you haven't noticed, DogBoy doesn't have the save. You have to send it again (if you think you already have, that is).
magog Feb 25, 2004, 05:08 AM hi to all!
i am sorry for the delay but i really did send the sav to dogboy on 20th feb 1:58 GMT+1. it was sent properly, i got no error message and the sent email is contentedly stored in my sent-mail folder. i have now resent it to greeneclan AT mchsi DOT com, pls confirm the address is right. i have no idea what might have happened, i am pretty much convinced it was not my fault. ??? let's see what happens this time.
CaptainCommando Feb 25, 2004, 03:17 PM I'd just like to pop in to say i'll be gone this friday evening through sunday, i'll be back sunday night though, so don't nobody panic too much ;)
DogBoy Feb 25, 2004, 04:36 PM I still have not received the game from Magog. I sent you an e-mail in hopes that we can establish a link between us. You can reply to my e-mail with the save and hopefully that will work.
magog Feb 25, 2004, 06:52 PM i got dogboy's email and sent him two emails (one with the savegame the other without it) I am playing another PBEM game and everything works fine with my address and savegames. I do not know what to do, I will try sending it from another address once more. if that fails I can email it to someone else to try forward it to dogboy or I can try to upload it somewhere (do not know how to do it though). well well well...
DogBoy Feb 25, 2004, 07:11 PM Ok, I got the e-mail with the save. I didn't get the e-mail without the save though. Something is definately weird here because I never have problems getting my e-mails from my other games. I'm just glad we got it going finally.
CaptainCommando Feb 25, 2004, 11:49 PM Game sent to Kaboth.
Arrogant Feb 26, 2004, 02:40 AM DogBoy & CaptainCommando, please e-mail or pm me your passwords.
Kaboth Feb 26, 2004, 05:27 AM 4000 bc sent to Fanste
@magog in homm3 gog was a fire throwing demon and the magog was its upgrade :)
Arrogant Feb 27, 2004, 01:44 AM Unbelievable! I have the game again! Oh, what a feeling! As if I have found a lost child... or a passionate but washed-out love of my first youth... a pet that I thought was dead, but now it appears at my front door, barking happily to bring again joy and meaning to my life... My preeecccciouuusssss... [/disturbed poet]
Anyway, 3950 BC sent to Astorian around 07:45 GMT :)
Astorian Feb 27, 2004, 07:01 AM 3950 sent to theforceman around 13:00 GMT
theforceman Feb 27, 2004, 09:10 AM 3950 sent to Magog around 15:15 GMT. Now await x turns of boredom, until I can get an Enkidu Warrior going. Oh well :) Nice to see the game get going anagin, anyway!
Arrogant Feb 27, 2004, 03:06 PM Kaboth, please e-mail or pm me your password.
magog Feb 28, 2004, 11:38 AM hi, sorry again for the previous delay (none's fault), all is fine now and my connection to dogboy works fine from another email address. no more delays due to technical difficulties.
I sent the sav to dogboy yesterday and he got it. by the way, should we post here every time we send a sav to the other player? This may become a very long thread!
CaptainCommando Mar 01, 2004, 03:25 PM Ok, i'm back, nobody panic ;)
Arrogant Mar 03, 2004, 03:25 AM It seems that someone here cannot play. Ok, let's find out where is it stuck. A bit disappointing for a PBEM to get stuck in 3950 BC. theforceman has already posted that he sent the game. If I'm reading his post correctly, magog has also sent 3950 BC to DogBoy. Is this correct ?
DogBoy Mar 03, 2004, 06:11 AM I don't think the game is stuck with me. I got 3950BC and played it. I never saw a turn after that. Somebody has it tho...
Arrogant Mar 03, 2004, 09:13 AM Then it must be with CaptainCommando or Kaboth, since fanste has been sending me the other PBEM regularly.
Ok, which one is it ?
Kaboth Mar 03, 2004, 02:54 PM My most recent save is 4000bc Fanste; I averted my eyes from your mini map location buddy but you really should have got a password for circumstances like this when people have to check their most recent saves.
Thus 3950 bc has stopped somewhere before me; maybe CC as he has been away recently but active again in his other PBEM games. Maybe someone should send him his turn again.
CaptainCommando Mar 03, 2004, 03:53 PM Weird... i don't think i have it, let me check my E-Mail....
DogBoy Mar 03, 2004, 03:54 PM In the interest of keeping this going, I went ahead and send Captain Commando the turn again. So if he plays it and sends it and you think you have already played it, you probably have. Just play and send and hopefully we can keep this going.
CaptainCommando Mar 03, 2004, 04:05 PM Originally posted by DogBoy

Ok, i just go tthe E-Mail, played and sent it, i think we're ok, i guess it just didn't get through the first time.
Kaboth Mar 03, 2004, 04:41 PM Okay I'll have to stall the game for about 12 hours. Unfortunately my university I am at atm does not have Civ3 Conquests
Arrogant Mar 04, 2004, 03:36 AM 12 hours ? We played 1 turn in 12 days, 12 hours is just 1 second in comparison.
Kaboth Mar 04, 2004, 04:57 AM 12 hours ? We played 1 turn in 12 days, 12 hours is just 1 second in comparison.
Hehe. Yeh I guess so.
Sent turn to Fanste
It may be wise to decide on a common naming format for the file so we don't keep looking accidently at other people's (who didn't make a password) turns from old saves. Any word on this Arrogant.
Arrogant Mar 04, 2004, 06:03 AM I use "To_AST_3900BC.SAV", since this is the only game I send a save to Astorian. If he was after me in another PBEM too, I guess I would use "LitS_To_AST_3900BC.SAV"
You said fanste doesn't have a password ? Strange, he sent me his password...
Astorian Mar 04, 2004, 02:34 PM Hey Arrogant, since your from Greece can you tell me what Astorian means? I have no idea, it was just a name of a character I had in a game of roleplay once. I heard it has greek origins though.
Kaboth Mar 04, 2004, 03:16 PM Well unless Fanste made a password up in a turn later than 4000 bc he does not have one at all.

It isn't a Greek word as far as I can tell, but it probably denotes the resident of Astoria (http://www.queenschamber.org/QueensInfo/NeighborhoodPages/astoria.html), which is an area near Manhattan largely populated by Greeks, hence the relationship with Greece. As you can see from the link, the place got its name from J.J. Astor.
DogBoy Mar 04, 2004, 07:07 PM I will be out of town this weekend. I will play my turn Friday night before I leave, and I will be back Sunday night. So basically I will only miss Saturday night. Sorry for the inconvenience.
fanste Mar 04, 2004, 07:22 PM Strange, i was prety sure i wrote my password in... i'll see if it asks me for it when i take my turn in a couple of hrs when i get home from school ;)

CaptainCommando Mar 06, 2004, 04:52 PM Ok, i go tthe game and sent it to Kaboth, but nobody posted here that they sent it to me which delayed it a bit, lets all try to make sure we post everytime we send the file so we avoid delays, mmmm'kay? ;)
Kaboth Mar 06, 2004, 05:48 PM Yes I think that people should post everytime. I always have my Instant messenger on so I see when emails are received but many of you may not use msn messenger or anything similar.
Sent 3900 bc to Fanste
wow Astorian still hasn't made his first base. I can tell cause his score is still 0.

Arrogant Mar 09, 2004, 11:33 AM It looks like Dogboy has a modem problem, as Predesad has posted in other threads. Hopefully he will have fixed it by tomorrow.
predesad Mar 09, 2004, 02:18 PM After further discussion with DogBoy he says as long as this problem continues he will play each turn everyday by downloading it from his mail at work, taking it home at night to play, then mailing it from work the next day. He said he has the turn for this game and will be sending it on sometime tomorrow from work.
DogBoy Mar 09, 2004, 08:10 PM Ok, I'm back online! I live in a new subdivision and houses are still being built. The construction workers hit the cable line, but the cable people came today and fixed it. Hopefully they don't hit it again.
Just played my turn and sent it.

Certainly, since magog also agrees. Presumably CaptainCommando will be back tomorrow and we will continue normally. PM your e-mail to theforceman who should send you magog's turn until he's back. You then have to send it to DogBoy. I'll also PM you magog's password.
Rocinante Mar 16, 2004, 09:34 AM PM sent. Happy to be of service. I already have Dogboy's email.
Arrogant Mar 18, 2004, 02:53 AM Kaboth, have you received the game from CaptainCommando ?
Rocinante Mar 18, 2004, 03:01 AM Captain Commando is awol--left last Thursday and hasn't been heard from since.
Arrogant Mar 18, 2004, 03:36 AM He posted he would be back on Sunday... anyway, I'll wait until tomorrow and then ask for a permanent replacement.
DogBoy Mar 18, 2004, 05:15 AM we had to get a replacement for him in another game we are playing
Kaboth Mar 18, 2004, 05:17 AM Yep I havn't received anything and If I had I would have played and posted by now
Arrogant Mar 18, 2004, 09:43 AM In that case... would Rocinante agree to take over the Koreans ?
Rocinante Mar 18, 2004, 10:23 AM Yeah, sure, point me the way to Korea and you guys can get your game back on track.
Arrogant Mar 18, 2004, 12:14 PM So, DogBoy can you send the game to Rocinante ? I'll pm him CC's password tomorrow.
DogBoy Mar 18, 2004, 02:31 PM Ok, I just sent it to him. Rocky, can you confirm you got the save?
Rocinante Mar 18, 2004, 03:00 PM Got "lost in sea 3800BC"--am waiting for the password.
DogBoy Mar 18, 2004, 07:59 PM Hmm, I didn't even think about the password. If that is the case, I will send the game to the host so he can use the admin password and make a new password for the game, then e-mail it to Rocky.
Kaboth Mar 18, 2004, 08:13 PM I think you can skip the password either that or CC never had one in my other game just click on the cancel I don't need a password icon a couple of times. Worked for me. Or perhaps you can enter a new password for yourself. Just try and bypass it in case he never seant a psword to anyone.
DogBoy Mar 18, 2004, 08:18 PM I just checked it, it has a password. I went ahead and sent the save to Arrogant. He can enter the admin password and make a new password and sent the save to Rocky.
Rocinante Mar 18, 2004, 08:45 PM Should have results for your in an hour or so, just now got back home.

I really don't know what we're going to do if 1.22 can't load 1.20's saves. Maybe the first who played with 1.20 (Rocinante ?) should patch to 1.22 and play again ?
Let's see whether Astorian can load the save with 1.22

Obligatory alliance with the first civ you meet (unless already allied with someone else, of course). This will eventually form 4 alliances of 2 players each
Arrogant, I know there has been some confusion among players. Rochinante attacked someone who was ment to be his partner not realising. The issue was corrected before the save proceeded to me though.
Should partners be posted here as they are met to prevent confusion. I've met noone yet.
Nevermind that I saw your answer Arrogant. Yes post as soon as you meet someone.

The last few hours I've been busy removing a trojan from my system. It is the most nasty trojan you've ever seen, it creates shortcuts to your desktop, changes IE's home page, etc. It creates lots of random files and registry keys. As far as I know, no AV can catch it or even remove it. Read more about it here (http://www.krank.hu/blog/index.php?itemid=199&catid=5). AFAIK, the only way to protect yourself until now, is to uninstall the MS Java Virtual Machine.

theforceman Apr 21, 2004, 08:08 AM Arrogant, are you sure it's not a hoax? A few days ago I got a mail that told me to delete a file called jdbgmgr.exe, which has got something to do with the Microsoft Debugger Registrar for Java. It turned out to be a false alarm, Sophos's web page said. Read more here (http://www.sophos.com/virusinfo/articles/jdbgmgr.html). Anyway, if it's real, good luck removing it.
Oh, and turn sent to Magog.
Arrogant Apr 21, 2004, 11:48 AM Hoax ? Heck no, when I saw those 3 shortcuts on my desktop, 5 links in my favorites, and IE homepage set to feednsomething, I just thought it's the usual harmless link. I kept removing everything and it kept appearing again after a while. VERY annoying. Your version maybe a hoax, I don't know, since apparently this has a lot of names and generates different keys and filenames.
Keep in mind that this vulnerability is NOT going to be fixed since the MS Java Virtual Machine is not supported anymore by MS.
Kaboth Apr 21, 2004, 05:53 PM How do you guys run into all these viruses I've only ever had one blaster one when I'd addicentally forgot to reinstall the Windows XP security patches after reinstalling reinstalling XP.
theforceman Apr 22, 2004, 01:25 AM Well, that sucks. Do you have any anti-virus program? I'm running F-Secure, which is quite good really. Every now and then a pop-up tells me that a virus has been downloaded or something like that. I really don't have any idea of how I get them. My only guess is that we're 5 people sharing the computer, so there's lots of traffic almost all the time.
I have also tried Avast, some sort of freeware anti-virus program that totally crashed my computer when I tried to install it... so keep away from it :)
Arrogant Apr 22, 2004, 02:57 AM Guys, this is not a virus, it is a trojan. And AV does nothing. Read the comments from the site I linked. People had installed all the latest antiviruses but it didn't help at all.
All you have to do to get this trojan is visit the wrong site. And no, it wasn't a porn site, I haven't visited one for years and I would remember if I had accidentally stumbled on one of them. I don't know from which site I got it since I had visited quite a few that day.
FYI, I have an almost fresh installation of Windows XP with all (yes, ALL) patches installed, 2 pop-up stoppers running at the same time and I am behind a firewall. But all these will not help. The thing is that MS will not fix this vulnerability because they don't support the Java VM anymore. But most people have it installed, it even comes with some XP/Me/98 patches. So, for the time being, the only way to protect yourself is to uninstall it.
Don't say that it will not happen to you, because if this doesn't happen, something else will :D I'm an (amateur) low-level programmer who knows how to navigate around the net and I can avoid most dangerous things, but one can never avoid everything...

i have actually been using the free home avast for some two years now and have been absolutely happy with it. i can only recommend it. I also use a firewall and have started using the supposedly more secure mozzilla recently. Never had any problems worth the name. and then i do sometimes visit the, say, darker corners of the net... wonder.
back to the game. how exactly do you jump with a settler over a sea strait again? can't find that one in the civguide. i don't complain about my island, only sorry there is no more refrigeration tech in civ3, i would save a fortune of that over here. oh, kill the seals and eat them raw! I should have played for penguins.
DogBoy Apr 22, 2004, 10:36 PM I have never heard of jumping a settler over a sea strait. The only way that I know of is to put him on a ship and transport him over there. As for the refrigeration, I have plenty of that where I'm out, I kid you not. There is no way I'm even going to be competitive in this game. My cities will never get over 2 due to all the tundra I'm in unless I build harbors. But that will take ages because I have no shields! I feel sorry for the guy that I find to be my ally.

Kaboth Apr 23, 2004, 03:07 AM I use Antivir which i've noticed in tests done by various magazines to be the most effective free antivirus.

Yeh tundra is bad. It's alright if theres just a few squares and plenty grassland. Perhaps you'll have some promising islands nearby when you get map making, one can only hope.
My Internet browsing is fairly conservative so I don't run to much risk of picking up viruses.

Never heard of this either. Perhaps you are referring to when tho horizontally adjacent squares with water in between them vertically can still be crossed.

magog Apr 23, 2004, 06:41 AM and one more thing why have TWO? pop-up stoppers? I have one good browser that takes care of that. ???
the settler thing, it was meant as a joke. You know, like I am stuck on an awful island with nowhere to expand and the first trireme is some fifty turns away if not more so how the **** could i put that settler over THERE? Nevermind. My curragh is out there and floating and I have a strong presentiment that it will be the other loser i will find myself allied to in no time. Well, every world domination victory has its beginning. I suppose...
Kaboth Apr 23, 2004, 05:08 PM Yeh it's hard to get these jokes online sometime put a smiley next to it that helps sometimes :)
Joke though it may be it does remind me of something. If there is a short distance between two islands, I think I read somewhere you can join them up with transport ships and walk units straight over hopping from one ship to another in a single turn or 2. You can potentially save a turn of travelling by boat. And have less units wasting time waiting for pickup. Can't remember where I read it on civfanatics though.
DogBoy Apr 26, 2004, 07:14 PM Anybody know what happened to the game? We went from a turn a day to 4 days with no turn.

DogBoy May 02, 2004, 05:22 PM Ok, we seemed to have stalled on this game. We were doing so well. Has anybody gone on vacation and didn't tell the group?
