View Full Version : New unit: Flying Castle
aaglo Feb 19, 2004, 11:41 AM Hi!
This is as fantasy as they come (again). A flying castle by aaglo and Vuldacon - I think you won't be seeing these in real life - or atleast in real use in real life. This unit has only magical attacks. "Why is that so?" you may ask. Well, if a wizard of such power, who can lift a castle from the ground, has to rely on such mundane things as arrows and catapults, he/she wouldn't even have the power to raise a castle from the ground
The unit model and most of the animations are done by aaglo - the unit sounds, fidget & updated run animations, ini-files and the user-friendly readme are done by Vuldacon (muchos gracias)
This unit can be used as a ground unit or as an air unit (with a funky bombard animation :D ) - see the readme- and ini-files for more information.

aaglo Feb 19, 2004, 11:42 AM And behold, it's not so bad looking in the game either :p
Gogf Feb 19, 2004, 11:43 AM THIRD POST!
Wow, this is just amazing Aaglo. Simply amazing!
Yoda Power Feb 19, 2004, 11:47 AM This came out great:thumbsup:
aaglo Feb 19, 2004, 11:50 AM I just had an idea - this could be used as a some sort of city graphics too :D (the castle part that is - it just needs to be put on the ground :mischief: )
Drift Feb 19, 2004, 12:02 PM And maybe two other city sizes as well?
Castle looks great. It really came a long way from the first preview that itself, was already very good. However, I think I would've preferred a more majestical death anim, slowly keeling with the whole thing crumbling into pieces as the magic keeping it together ceases to work. It's no biggie though, upside down thingy is fun too. :)
mrtn Feb 19, 2004, 12:22 PM Now I just hope Grandraem or tjedge1 finish some sort of mod with this beauty soon, I want to play with it. :D
Grandraem Feb 19, 2004, 12:29 PM [dance] Happy Day!
Perfect, aaglo! Stunning!!! Thank-you.:goodjob:
@mrtn
It's in the works, but tjedge1's is probably closer to completion.
Drift Feb 19, 2004, 01:05 PM I haven't ruled out the possibility of adding this into MoM, so there may be one mod with it in the near future :) I just have some trouble with its stats. What kind of an unit should this be? A bombardment unit with a defense value?
Gogf Feb 19, 2004, 02:41 PM That sounds pretty good (if I ever make a fantasy mod (doubtful), that is probably what I would do).
Raw is War? Feb 19, 2004, 03:23 PM Turned out great aaglo   :)
embryodead Feb 19, 2004, 03:48 PM yeah, very good :) I also think that city graphics are good idea.

spincrus Feb 19, 2004, 05:10 PM Did you even think about the people that died in that castle when it collapsed upside down? HA? DID YOU AAGLO? So inconsiderate...
 It's superb. Typical. :worship:
I just wish that units could create caters when they died, too, though.
tjedge1 Feb 19, 2004, 06:56 PM I'm alittle over half way with my mod, but the laptop is coming! As soon as I get that baby, I will be able to quadruple my worktime on the mod, since I can take to work and they make me take a full hour lunch and 2 breaks totaling out at 35 minutes and then I'm always a 1/2 hr early. That isn't including the time at home when my wife drags me screaming from my personal office.
All these great units coming out by aaglo and embryodead, not to mention the special request that Kinboat is doing for me, I'm beginning to get impatient on waiting to finish my mod. :rotfl:
BTW: :thumbsup:, too bad I'm not a mutant or I'd giving you a dozen more of those. :mutant:
Drivebymaster Feb 19, 2004, 09:58 PM When's the Laptop due?
Drivebymaster Feb 19, 2004, 09:58 PM OOPSS BTW This is a perfect unit for my mod thanx
Nwoll Feb 19, 2004, 10:05 PM Great unit, Your work (as well as many other great unit creators) has inspired me to try to make a fantasy mod.
Again, AWESOME Unit!
Drift Feb 20, 2004, 01:53 AM I just had an idea. I don't know if this was what you were after with the city graphics idea, but this castle here could use a city building animation i.e. planting itself to the ground. I'm not going to use it that way, but wouldn't it be the coolest thing if this thing planted itsef to the ground resulting in an exactly same looking town?
aaglo Feb 20, 2004, 01:56 AM :D
So, now this is a settler-unit
spincrus Feb 20, 2004, 02:05 AM @Drift: After all the effort with the attack animations, this unit deserves more than being a settler :P
In fact, if it was possible to create settlers who could automatically create cities with population 2 or 3, this would be a very good option.
But the idea itself is nice. A settler unit which costs more shields, but less population points. For fantasy mods, of course
Sleepy Eyes Feb 20, 2004, 04:20 AM Very Creative! I am going to use this like a bomber or something in a mythical era o ;)
My wife plays civ and wants a unicorn and I can never seem to find one for her. But this Castle will do just fine :goodjob:

I've also requested for an unicorn and embryodead hinted of there being a possibility of him doing one at some point. :)
Castle went into MoM BTW. It's a high-end Chaos Mage unit with both A/D and bombardment stats.
tjedge1 Feb 20, 2004, 06:06 AM I've requested a unicorn a few months back. I got one response and now that person hasn't been around the same threads as me. He was very frequent for a while. I'll have to look him up. He mentioned making a Pegasus first then put a rider on it.
Amesjustin Feb 20, 2004, 07:42 AM Very Cool! :goodjob: It's too bad I can't think of any way to tie this into anything I am currently working on. Its a real beauty!

I decided to stop caring 'bout the lives of civizens when I, as a diversion, sent 20 Tanks on a suicidal landing behind the Egyptian lines, and had them raze three size 20-25 cities and disband the resultant slave workers before the Egyptians redirected sufficient force from the main front to take them out.
I never bothered bothered to calculate total losses in that war, but if we assume each worker unit to be 10k people, disbanding of slave workers alone amounted to millions of dead.
Sleepy Eyes Feb 20, 2004, 12:16 PM I wish I knew how to convert units from other video games. I have TA Kingdoms and it has some interesting units like pegasus and some interesting units that would be neat to see in Civ. ANd I think ill check out. And I think Ill check out Drifts Mod now.....

Vuldacon Feb 20, 2004, 01:24 PM   ..."Far Out" aaglo! Looks Great... I can hardly wait to get my pilots license for it. Great Fantasy addition...Love it.
puglover Feb 20, 2004, 02:07 PM Who else thinks the death animation is hillarious?
The unit rocks. ;)
vbraun Feb 20, 2004, 05:08 PM Very nice!
*vbraun reminds aago about the galley ;)
Vuldacon Feb 20, 2004, 05:53 PM Here is a Fidget animation for the FlyingCastle from aaglo. Just took the initial lighting aspects of the Attack and applied it in an alternating manner. Because I like the excellent lighting effects aaglo created with this unit attack...I thought it would make a nice Fidget.
Here is a preview:
I will place the Zip in the next Post.
Vuldacon Feb 20, 2004, 05:59 PM Here is the Zip for the FlyingCastleFidget for any who want it.
Wonderful Unit aaglo.
Get the Zip here: size 83.9 KB
tjedge1 Feb 20, 2004, 06:04 PM Still no sound for this unit yet? Is anyone going to attempt it?
Chris85 Feb 20, 2004, 06:22 PM Amazing unit Aaglo!!! :worship:
I can't wait to see the looks on my enemy's faces when this baby floats over their heads and conquers their cities. :mwaha:
Vuldacon Feb 20, 2004, 06:33 PM tjedge1 ... Yes, I am working on the sounds...want to take a little time to try and do it justice. I think the Death CRASH of this Huge castle along with my desire to impliment good appropriate sounds for the Attack animations deserve some experimenting.
...because I want this unit to leave the city and also have Air Bombard for the MageBomb.flc....I will probably make it an Air Unit (which cannot capture a city) and this will make it Vulnerable to Any land unit Attack when outside the city. Probably set it invisible and give it Attack and Air Bombard. I believe the Attacks A and B along with the MageBomb.flc can be used this way. Because everyone will not set this unit the same, Players will be able to take the Sounds and impliment them within the settings they use for this unit. I will Post the sounds and the .INI when finished.
tjedge1 Feb 20, 2004, 06:36 PM Sweet thanks. Sorry if I sounded pushy, I just get so excited sometimes. :D

Sims2789 Feb 20, 2004, 09:25 PM i remember reading about this in a the Requests thread. i thought, "that would be tight!" i still agree with my original statement. nice work!
aaglo Feb 21, 2004, 02:07 AM Hey!
That fidget ain't bad at all
Good work ;)
TVA22 Feb 21, 2004, 09:54 AM great job!

Ahem! As a matter of fact I can control myself in that situation. I have more experience in that field, thank you. :groucho: That's a different kind of excitement. :p :king:
Corn Shucker Feb 21, 2004, 02:07 PM Dude you should make a hole graphic from where it left the ground :D
Vuldacon Feb 21, 2004, 03:57 PM Glad you approve of the Fidget aaglo, it is from your work so it was not difficult... You Really Create Sharp, Detailed Animations! Always a Pleasure adding your Units to my game.
... BTW, If you have any particular ideas concerning Sounds for the Flyingcastle, Please let me know here or a PM or e-mail. As the Creator of the Unit, I assume you have some specific ideas you would like as Sounds. Let me know your thoughts.
aaglo Feb 21, 2004, 04:11 PM Ideas for run-sound?????? Birds singing? I'm under the impression, that it wouldn't make no sound at all. Perhaps just a little sound of wind blowing perhaps?
Vuldacon Feb 21, 2004, 05:59 PM "Birds singing" ...I doubt that ANY Bird would be singing around that Huge Phenomenon Flying around. Perhaps Rumbling Wind, mixed with some sort of sound that indicates the Power involved that sustains the Castle in Air...Magical and or Ominous Power. I'll see what works but it wont be Birds singing or even a few bars of "The Hills are Alive with the Sound of Music"
Aluminium Feb 21, 2004, 07:34 PM It flies!! :nono: Does this Castle know that there is such a thing like gravity? Whatever I like it! :goodjob:
Mr Funkypants Feb 21, 2004, 10:51 PM Really sweet graphics and stuff! We are all crazy to like this stuff. :crazyeye: I mean, who ever heard of a flying castle! Great idea anyways though, could be used 4 lots o' fun. :D
tjedge1 Feb 22, 2004, 11:04 AM My players made a flying castle in D&D. Back in the early 90's.
I think the song "the Hills are alive with the sound of Music," would be great for a fidget sound. Any way it could be included in a package for those of us who enjoy a little comedy with our conquering?:cry::lol:
Xen Feb 22, 2004, 11:07 AM am I the only person to remember the part form gullivers trvals where good ole' Gulliver is in a flying castle for a time?
tjedge1 Feb 22, 2004, 11:18 AM Never saw or read Gullivers Travels. Always wanted too, just never seemed to get around to it. Now I will have to make more time just to find out about the flying castle in it.
Xen Feb 22, 2004, 11:24 AM It realls is a nice little story :) I would think that the fantasy modders (like you, IIRC ;)) would get a great deal of good ideas from it :)
Arghis Feb 22, 2004, 11:43 AM Wonderful units Aaglo ! i'm without words !
Bravo
Vuldacon Feb 25, 2004, 02:37 AM OK...Finally Completed some sounds for the FlyingCastle.
Included: Fidget/Victory flc and a Run flc.
Sounds: AttackA, AttackB, Fidget, Victory, Death, MageBomb and the Run Sounds for Air and Land Unit Settings.
Also included are Three .INI Files with settings for the Three Basic ways to use the FlyingCastle...Land Unit, Air Unit and "Leave the City" Air Unit.
Please Read the Read Me in the Zip.
After Struggling with the Looping of the Run Sound in the Game, I was forced to abandon the Wind and Rumbling sounds I tried for 2 days but I hope the sound I managed to make work will meet with approval...if not, as aaglo has stated...it could Run Silent.
 I am sure you Guys wil let me know your thoughts about these sounds.
Get the Zip Here: Size 861 KB http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads6/FlyingCastleSounds_and_Updates.zip
Due to Server problems I was Unable to check the Upload so let me know if any problems Downloading the Zip.
aaglo Feb 25, 2004, 03:02 AM Hehe!!!
Cool sounds  ;)
And thank you very much.
BTW: the link should be .../FlyingCastleSounds_and_Updates.zip
I'll edit the first post :)
[Edit]:
Vuldacon, do you mind if I upload the updates in the CDG forum too (I won't make a direct link to civfanatics)? Or do you want to do that?
Vuldacon Feb 25, 2004, 03:46 AM Vuldacon, do you mind if I upload the updates in the CDG forum too (I won't make a direct link to civfanatics)? Or do you want to do that?
Sure aaglo...you can do what ever you like...BTW, I had major problems with the site and even Uploaded twice lol. Never did get the Upload Page to load and then even the typed address was goofed....it should be ok now after I managed to edit it.
BTW...do you think tjedge1 will be happy to Finally get the Sounds
tjedge1 Feb 25, 2004, 06:26 AM yes I am, did I bug to much? ;)
I do seem to frustrate people lately.
Dogmeat Feb 25, 2004, 12:06 PM The way the castlewalls light up after the castle fires looks strikingly beautiful. That animation really stands out.
Vuldacon Feb 25, 2004, 01:53 PM yes I am, did I bug to much?
No, Not at all tjedge1...Just takes a Great Deal of Time to try and create sounds and make the timing work with Units. Some are Very Difficult to do well...It took almost a Month of experimenting and testing to create the sounds and get the Run to work well in the Game with Kinboat's Beholder Unit. Many Factors affect how sounds are played in the game. There is no Manual or Exact Formula to use that I know of and although I have gained more understanding about how to apply sounds, I still have to use some "trial and error" testing as well. The Run sounds are ALWAYS the most difficult to make the timing work in all directions and for different movement rates without .amb files. Anyway...Hope you like the sounds for the FlyingCastle. No doubt, many players would have had some different sounds in mind but without their opinions, I did the best I could within a quick time constraint.
Players are free to add, delete, change or use what I create as they like. It is all for Fun and I certainly don't profess to be able to please everyone with my additions...only hope some will Enjoy them. Sorry, that was Long Winded
TheMorpheus Feb 25, 2004, 05:30 PM What an idea , perfect work :goodjob:
Dann Feb 25, 2004, 06:59 PM Wonderful unit. Thanks. :goodjob:
All I have to do now is think of how to integrate this into a historical mod or scenario. Aaaargh!
What tech should I associate this unit? Theory of Gravity? :D
Aussie_Lurker Feb 25, 2004, 11:56 PM It reminds me of the flying castles from the 'DragonLance Chronicles', and would be fantastic in a scenario based on this story!!! Fantastic work, BTW, looks Waaaay Cooool ;)!!!
Yours,
The_Aussie_Lurker.
tjedge1 Feb 26, 2004, 05:36 AM A DragonLance mod is in my plans after the one I'm working on. ;)
@Dann: Theiry of Gravity? Yeah, that could work. Cool idea. I just might do that in my personal mod. :hmm:
Vuldacon Feb 26, 2004, 03:13 PM Maybe it is only me but it seems that the Flyingcastle would be best as an Early Unit with the Prerequisite Mysticism or Monarchy...All depends on if the Unit is added to games with "usual" Units as well or if it is added to a Special MOD that uses ALL new units of a specific nature like an all Magic MOD.
...it is still a Castle (Fyling or Not) and generally speaking about Castles, they fit better around the Middle Ages but this is a Fantasy Unit and therefore Not subject to basic or "Normal" settings. As a Land Unit, I set The Victory Sound to reflect the essence of what would be heard from a Castle during the Middle Ages.
Personally, I am using the FlyingCastle as a Land Unit with the following Editor settings:
Prerequisite-Mysticism
Class-Land
UNIT STATISTICS
Cost-10 (100 shields)
Moves-3
Zone of Control-checked
Attack Str.: 7
Defense Str.: 6
Operational Range-3
Bombard Str.: 8
Bombard Range-1
Rate of Fire-5
HP-4
UPGRADE TO: Siege Cannon
Required Resources-None
UNIT ABILITIES
Blitz
All Terrain as Roads
Radar
Ranged Attack Animation
Lethal Land Bombardment
Lethal Sea Bombardment
AVAILABLE TO: I use European Countries but you decide.
AI STRATEGIES -LAND
Offense, Artillery, Explore
STANDARD ORDERS-ALL Checked
SPECIAL ACTIONS
Load
Pillage
Bombard
Upgrade Unit
Yes I have this Unit set Powerful but it is in an Extreme MOD with Very Strong Units.
Note: You can set Rebase with this or any Land Unit and they will Rebase to Any of your Cities from Any LAND area. It is an OverKill Ability if anyone desires it.
All things considered, the FlyingCastle is a very versatile Fantasy Unit...Have Fun with your personal Editor Settings.
Dann Feb 26, 2004, 06:25 PM That bit of mine about the Theory of Gravity was a joke. If anything it SHOULD be made obsolete by ToG. :p
