The History of the Ottoman Empire

The history of the Ottoman Empire is filled with conquests and the arts. One man would lead a small state to the glories of Empire through his madness. His name was Osman the Great. It started on the small penninsula called the Bosporus. Also called Byzantium by the Greeks to the west. Istanbul, as the capitol city was called, was sorrounded by the Black Sea to the north and the Agean Sea to the south. The ocean winds blew across the town of Istanbul as settlers left the gates to settle in Greece to the south-west. There the settlers founded a new city and so founded the multi city state of Turky. More settlements were founded in the Asia minor. Soon the new country began to take shape.-

Osman (then titled the Frail for his constant injury in battle) was pleased with his peoples progress. The controled the Asian Minor, parts of the Georgian mountains, contacts were made with the Arabians, French, Germans, Egyptians, Persians, and Russians. France was a powerful country controlling all of Southern Europe. Persia was the most powerful country in the Middle East. Their empire stretched from Hattins Horn to the far east. The land the Turks controlled wasnt sufficient to sustain a large population. Mountains and volcanoes littlered the country. But Turkey continued to expand and grow. Commerce increased, money was flowing into the treasury, the people were happy, wonders were being contructed in Istanbul. By the Medieval Ages the Turks were a midiocre nation. Respectred by most trading nations such as the French who were the most powerful country, second only to India. India had access to huge amounts of Gems and Spices, making the Indians the richest country on earth. In Europe things were not so pleasant, a war had erupted between Russia and Germany. Germany had pushed far into the Russian mainland. In the far east the Mongolians and China dominated, vast countries but with little wealth or power. Osman was a shrewd polititian. But his people were doubting his ability to make the Turkish life better. Something had to be done about fertil farmland and with the emergance of Gunpowder and a new warrior code Osman just may have the chance to prove his skill...

Major reforms were taking place in Turkey. Osman gave up his powers to a large group of nobles thus creating the first Republic in the Middle East. Ships and military weapons were being built at a huge rate. A new class of warrior was emerging, the Sipahi. Trained from childhood these warriors were the most skilled musket weilders in the world. The Turkish state was on the verge of a Golden Era. One November morning word arrived to Osman from the Arabian Prince Abur, it read-

My dear friend Osman. The Egyptians have attacked our holy cities of Mecca and Medina. They have been stopped short of our gates but we cannot hold for long. If you open up a second front in the Egyptian homeland you are promised all of your captured cities. I hope you will come to the aid of your felllow Muslim...

With that Osman the Frail went to the newly created Senate and read the letter to the nobles. A vote was cast and a decleration of war was chosen with a 67% vote. Turkey was to participate in its first war. No one knew how the Sipahi would stand up to the Egyptian army but Osman was confident enough to gather his own armor and set sail with his soldiers for Egypt...

It took 2 weeks to reach Egypt by galley. Some men died and others had to turn back. But when Osman and the rest of his men reached Egypt they marched straight for the capitols of Memhis and Thebes. The Sipahi were of great skill in battle and tore through Egyptian spearmen. Memphis fell in only 3 days. Thebes fell a week later. The Nile was an awesome sight to the conquering Turks. From Osman the Frails Accounts-

The Nile is a large river the likes of which I have never seen. It is amazing such a beautiful thing flows through the middle of the Great Desert...

With the opening of the front in Egypt came the collapse the the Egyptian offensive against the Arabs. City after city fell to Osmans soldiers until the Senate decided that the objective had been reached. Osman and his soldiers returned to Istanbul triumphantly. The Imam of Istanbul titled Osman "The Great". Turkey was no longer a small state, it had become a world power.

The Great Age had started. Turkey had nearly doubled in size. Controling land from the western side of the Horns of Hattin into the far western Sahara Desert. The Egyptians had moved south into the jungles of the Congo. Osmans ego grew emensly. He had created a better nation for his people and his Sipahi were seemingly unbeatable in battle. With his victory came his decision to dissolve the Senate believing he had the skill to run an Empire on his own. Instead of building city improvements Osman ordered the training of an army of Sipahi. Osman looked a map of his Turkish Empire. Persian cities cut the Empire in half preventing a land route between the provinces of Egypt and Turkey. Furthermore the Persian Emir, Xerxes, was constantly rude to Osmans trade caravans by taking "tolls" from their precious cargo. With an inflated ego and a rebuilt army, Osman began an invasion that would make Turkey the most powerful country in the world.

The armies of Sipahi and Immortals clashed on a scale never seen before. After each intense battle thousands were left dead on the desert dunes soon buried by their shifting sands. The first Persian city to fall was Anitoch. With the capture of this major city, came the joining of the 2 province empire. A lightning attack was launched on the Firtil Crecent. City after city fell before Osmans Sipahi. The war raged all the way up to Persepolis, the Persian capitol. The Emir soon asked for a Peace Treaty which Osman accepted. The Persian Empire was descimated. Turkey now controlled Iraq and the Holy Lands. Osman once again returned to Istanbul in triumph. Some people refused to cheer for the Sultan, for sons and brothers had been lost in the short and bloody conflict...

Meanwhile the war between Russia and Germany had spun out of control. The Germans were losing ground fast. It had been less then a year since the Persian War and the Russians were taking German cities at a rate that alarmed the Sultan. North of the Capsian Sea Osman set the line in the sand. Osman wrote a letter to the Tsar of the Rus, Catherine, it read-

Your recent advancement into the Capsian Basin alarms and troubles me Catherine. Do not cross the German city of Frankfurt or action must be brought against you. Let us hope you are wise enoughnot to antagonize the Turks!

Catherine dismissed the letter and told the Turkish enovy to stay out of Russian buisness. Catherine had made a huge mistake...

It was once again a November morning. The third anniversary of the Arabian Princes call for help when Osman recieved word that the Russians had crossed the Frankfurt line and captured the city. Osman was outraged that Catherine would be so arrogant. The next day Osman gathered his Sipahi and treaded north into the Georgian Mountains. The cold froze men to their souls as they crossed the friged mountains. After weeks of marching the soldiers found reliefe at the sight of the Caspian Sea. From their standpoints they could see Frankfurt on the horizen. To the east of Frankfurt was a visible cloud in the distance lead by a long line of mounted and armored soldiers...

Frome the accounts of Osman the Great-

The Sipahi lined up in their positions. Their flags raised hight and with thoughts of my glory they charged at the opposing Russian ranks. The opposing soldiers are skilled and brave. Similar to my Sipahi they are mounted horsemen weilding a rifle, the Russian villagers call them Cossacks. It is an almost equal match...

As I surveyed the battlefield I saw the wonderful carnage my well trained troops caused. It has been counted that our army has suffered huge losses at the hands of the Rus, but I am confident those men died valiantly in my honor...

Hudreds of Turks and Russians were left dead at the gates of Frankfurt. The Rus had lost the battle and began their retreat back to the steppes. Osman rejoiced at the Battle openly to his men. Although he had watched the battle from the saftey of the Georgian Mountains he knew it was his commanding skills that won the battle. After the battle of Frankfurt the Sipahi were on the Russian heels all the way to Moscow. After a 3 month siege of the City the siege was abandoned do to heavy losses. While in Istanbul celberating his victory Osman ordered the Commanding Officer, Mehmed al-Sur, to march straight for Novogrod, a coastal city built on the shores of the Baltic. The commander refused in favor of fortifying their newly captured cities in response to new Russian attacks. Mehmed won every major battle with the Rus afterwards. The Russians made peace with Germany shortly after. Osman declared Russias defeat and created a peace treaty that the Rus ultimately accepted. When Mehmed returned to Istanbul Osman ordered his beheading for treason.
Osman declared that the Great Empire of Turkey would witness a great era of peace. He was right for the most part, improvements were being built all over the provinces. In Egypt mass irrigation began which made the Tri-Cities the largest in the Empire. Osmans Empire was twice as populated as any other nation in the world and there was still room to grow. A new world was discovered in the far west which Osman ordered the colonialization of almost immediatly. New lands were colonized and named Cuba, Mexico, and South America. A new leader took power in Egypt and attacked the Egypt Province. Osman reacted with huge force that took more out of Egypt. Though the Egyptians had attacked and captured one colony in South America.
Tensions were building in the new Industrial world. Wars erupted all over, Arabia was finally captured. Osman led a coalition against the nation he saved, Germany, in response to an unproved assassination atempt by Bismark of the Germans against Osman. Germany was destroyed by the French and Turk Coalition. India which was the only opposition to Turkey was far larger country than Turkey, India could bring a coalition to bear on any nation through power and luxery. India signed pacts with Persia, China, and Egypt. While Osman preferred pacts with France and Japan. From accounts of Osman the Great-

I fear a World War will break out, the likes of which no one has seen before. New factories turn out weaponry at an amazing pace. The new industrial might of India threatens the boundaries of Turkey. Only more Sipahi can be created! Though their power weakens with every Rifleman created by the enemy...

Over the plains of Persia horizontal lead rain floods the field. Canonballs tear through formations of soldiers. In the field hospitals amputations are performed without anethstetics. All under the eye of Osman on the hill above. Yet another battle won by Osman. At the frail age of 81 Osmans first title was begining to return. Finally the Persian capitol had fallen. A 2 year siege ending in victory for the Turks. His aids help him slowly walk across the battle field. "Finally a road to the Indians", Osman said to one of his advisors. Over 20 thousand Turks and 45 thousand Persians perished before the capitols gates. The World War was coming to an end with the dissolving of the Asian Alliance. Once again Osman returned to Istanbul in triumph. Osman was unbeatable, at least by a weaker foe. Osman had taken a wife, Isabella, daughter of the King of France. Isabella bore 1 child. They named him Suliman who was being carefully groomed for the responsibility of Sultan. The Great Age had ended long ago with the common man living below the poverty line. But when all seemed calm for good the new leader of Inida, Ghandi II, demanded tribute from the Sultan. Osman refused and the issue was not heard of for a long while. The Turkish Empire has little holdings in the new world compared to that of England and Egypt. Many nations were coming to rival the size of the Turkish Empire. Politics were virtually eraticated with constant assassinations by Osman on potential rivals. Osman often sat alone in his chambers suffering from insomnia. Osman would spend hours upon hours rambling, plotting his empire, and simulating wars with small pieces while his obsolete Sipahi Guard would stand nearby. More words of troop movements reached Osman who dismissed them as cheap Indian tricks. Little did he know the most horrible even of his life was about to occur...

Suliman had taken Osmans sword to play with in the palace courtyard. Osman returned from a meeting to find his precious victory blade missing. Searching everywhere with anger building up with every room he searched. Finally Osman found his son in the courtyard holding the broken pieces of his sword. With uncontrolable anger and with strength he only kne in his prime, Osman struck Suliman on the head with his staff. Suliman fell dead on the ground. Realizing what he had done Osman held the body of his Suliman weeping...
It was a strange and foggy morning on the Bosphorus in November. Sixty years since the Egyptian War. In the far east on the borders of China an Indian Tank brigade charged into the Turkish villages destroying and burning everything in their path. Through telegraph a message was sent to Istanbul where the commanding officer who ripped the message out of the machine began running towards the imperial palace. As fast as he could he passed Sulimans memorial in the courtyard and ran up the winding stairs. Passing Sipahi guards he ran until he reached the great doors of the throne room. Bursting through the doors the officer yelled "My Sultan! The Indians have attacked us in Khazakstan! What shall we do?". Osman did not answer. When the officer approached Osman he found him dead with his eyes open. Yet another ruler had quitely passed leaving the Turks with a dieing Empire that ran from the New World to the borders of China and Russia.

The End
