I'm willing to host a PBEM game for 4 to 6 players in Conquests.

Players should be able to play at least once every day.

I'm planning on a standard or small map with random settings and accelerated production 'on' to speed up game play but I'll go with the majority flow.

Anybody interested?

It will be my first hosting and first PBEM (I just joined another but I don't think it is going anywhere soon)

Send email address to join up.

I'm on the west coast and would like to play against other Americans, North or South.

Please be willing and able to construct full sentences in English--insults and taunts are so much more effective when your enemy can understand them. "All your base are belong to us!"

Kaboth
Feb 23, 2004, 10:24 PM
So are us Australians excluded or may we join? If so reserve me a position. I'll get back to you with more details later.

Feb 23, 2004, 10:43 PM
Excellent news, what kind of setting should we use? I was hoping to use some settings that will make the game go faster, like a small map and accelerated production.

I can often play for short periods mornings, afternoons, evenings, and late night but never know what my schedule will be before hand. I often work 'in the field' during the day but am often at home all day working on the computer.

I'm sure the other game will get going sooner or later but it may be fun to have two going at once with mostly the same cast--the politics could splash over from one game to the next.

Feb 23, 2004, 11:43 PM
Ok, this means i'm in THREE PBEM games at once, but none are even doing jack so.... let's go!

I think the three of us are way active, and just one more is necessary for a good game, especially on a small map. I think 4 is fine, but if you wanna do 6 no problem, it'll just take a bit longer and there is more risk of a stall.

ALso, i'm not a huge fan of AC, but i guess as long as there are no AI to screw us with it, i'm ok.

Rocinante
Feb 24, 2004, 12:08 AM
Okay, a small map, no accelerated production, 4 players and no AI. Sounds like a free-for-all. Pan, arch, random? lots of water, no water...
No one likes to be stuck in jungle but should we go random settings or what? I really don't give a rip about the settings so help me out here.

Rocinante-I'm Egypt in the other game so I'll stuck with it here--can you spell Cleopatricide?
CaptainCommando-??
Kaboth-??

CaptainCommando

I'll go with Persia, please. :)

Kaboth
Feb 24, 2004, 05:57 AM
Rocinante I recommend opening the conquests editor and select generate map from the menus and try a few different settings, get a feel for the type of terrain each setting will create. The choose whatever you want. Personally I like as many grass/jungle/marsh squares with a modest amount of hills/mountains and pangea 60%. But do as you wish when you've picked settings I'll pick a civ to play as.

DogBoy
Feb 24, 2004, 07:16 AM
I will play if there is a spot left. I play 9:00PM-midnight EST. I want to be random civ. My e-mail is greeneclan AT mchsi DOT com

Rocinante
Feb 24, 2004, 09:22 AM
Okay, I'm going to go ahead and generate the map--I'll post the particulars and then Kaboth can choose his civ and we'll get started. If anyone else shows up between now and then I'll probably let them in the game if they seem okay.

Thanks for joining Dogboy, we play the same hours, cool--I'll set your civ to random.

this may not be the order of play--I'll set the order and give out email addresses as needed:
Rocinante-Egypt
CaptainCommando-Persia (gotta love those immortals)
Kaboth-tba
Dogboy-random

Rocinante
Feb 24, 2004, 10:11 AM
Here are the settings except one--do we want culturally linked start locations?

otherwise it is:
Monarch
no AI
restless barbs
pangea 60% H20
normal climate
temperate
4 billion years
allow cultural conversions
preserve random seed
usual win conditions

these can still be changed so pipe up if you have ideas.

CaptainCommando
Feb 24, 2004, 03:43 PM
I don't really have much of a preference with CUlterlly linked start locations. I usually put it o njust because it 'makes sense,' but in a multiplayer gam ei don't reall ycare. If anyone has a preference make sure to speak up.

DogBoy
Feb 24, 2004, 04:43 PM
Cultural linked postions don't matter to me. All the other settings look fine. But I didn't see the land size?

Kaboth
Feb 24, 2004, 04:55 PM
I say turn off culturally linked start location; it makes it easier to predict who may start near you.

I'm GMT+10 timezone. email: joshthecybs at hotmail dot com

I shall play as Iroquis. Name Kaboth. Title Lord.

Rocinante
Feb 24, 2004, 06:19 PM
Sorry to leave off the size--small map

No culturally linked start positions

otherwise the same as above

If I don't have to go first I'd like the order to be
Kaboth-Iroquois--Lord Kaboth
Dogboy-random
CaptainCommando-Persians
Rocinante-Egypt

I'll send the game asap

Dogboy, CC's email is captainketchup_ AT hotmail DOT com

Rocinante
Feb 24, 2004, 06:56 PM
The game has been sent to Kaboth.

I had to go first, have a pretty good spot with grassland near a river and jungle ( I hate jungle ). I was a bit undecided as to whether to move my settler or not but since I had thought of going last anyway--I did move my settler.

I should be able to play every day for the foreseeable future. Please let the group know ahead of time if you have to miss a day.

I asked for a chat room for our game but haven't heard back yet.

Dogboy, what civ did you get?
I sure hope I'm not between CaptainCommando and something he wants--those Persian Immortals are really tough, I went up against a bunch in GOTM28 and had to give ground before gaining the upper hand
Gonna see how tough the Egyptian War Chariot is-haven't played as Egypt before (against the barbs of course--I would never unleash such a devastating weapon against you my dear, gentle rivals)

Just don't interupt my guy's prayer hour 'cause they get really angry if you do.
These religious civs pray a lot you know--actually I wish they'd train more and learn some tactics but they are usually out praying! Sometimes I wonder what they do in those temples...

Dogboy, please check in each day if you can. Did you get the game from Kaboth?

DogBoy
Feb 27, 2004, 05:57 AM
I got the first save from him, nothing more. Perhaps he could post his save because I check this board about 3-4 times per day. I really can't understand what the problem is. I get e-mails from everybody else. When I sent him an e-mail and he replied to that one, I got it. The only conclusion I can come up with is he might have typed my e-mail address wrong. He could either post the game here, or just respond to my e-mail everytime he sends me a turn.

Ok, Kaboth just sent me turn 2 again. I got this one several days ago, played it, and sent it to Captain Commando. Maybe the problem is not between us. Maybe it is between us. I'm going to send the same turn again and want Captain Commando to reply once he gets it. Something is definately screwy here.

Rocinante
Feb 28, 2004, 08:30 PM
I'm going to send 3950BC to Kaboth again. If he can play it again and send turn 2 to Dogboy then perhaps we can get back on track. I'm hoping Captain Commando can have turn 2 in his in-box when he gets back about 24 hrs from now.

DogBoy
Feb 28, 2004, 08:41 PM
I really don't think that is the problem. Kaboth has sent turn 2 to me twice, I have received it twice, I have sent it to Captain Commando twice. Yet he has not responded to me that he has received it. That's why I'm wondering if he is out of town, not playing the game anymore, or whatever. I'm attaching turn 2 here for him to download just incase he's not getting my e-mails.

Rocinante
Feb 28, 2004, 09:28 PM

Not allowed to post any specifics about it but I sure had a good time getting GOTM29 started. I can say that you start as the Egyptians and you are on the Nile. This month we are playing at the Emperor level so I'm really getting a challenge.

GOTM is basically vanilla Civ3 but with the new C3C civs added.

Dogboy probably built city on first go and he is an expansionist civ so started with a scout which I believe is +20 score. And it's likely he popped a hut and got a warrior or tech by now resulting in his +30 score above me. But heh Dogboy drew Portugal on a pangea map; I feel sorry for him :)

i dont know exactly where i am going to line up in the turn rotation,i didnt look, but i am GMT -6 hope that doesnt slow things down if the game goes form the US to europe back to US or something like that.

from what i gathered i will be taking over for captaincommando who is the persians. i like the persians but i have never really had good "luck" with htem, everytime i take them i get a start that keeps me from doing what i want, i hope i at least get iron so my immortals can hunt down portugal : D

Rocinante
Mar 18, 2004, 11:55 PM
Welcome to the game, Predesad, I will save your demise for last!

I think GMT-6 puts you in the American mid-west and that is fine, I'm west coast and I think Dogboy is too. Kaboth is from down under (where the women glow and the men thunder) so he gets his turn while we're all asleep.

You are last in the rotation and will send the game to me at jmot AT sprynet.com. Your friend/nemesis Dogboy will send the game to you. He popped a settler out of a hut and is still gloating.

I'm off to get this thing started again.

predesad
Mar 19, 2004, 02:16 AM
i am not quite in the midwest, but rather in the sooutheast, TN, i think dogboy is in eastern time zone, this should fit fine, he'll probably send it to me in the morning, can you email me the password?

Yep, the rotation will work out just fine. Glad you decided to join us Predesad. As for Rocky2, let's keep playing it. Nothing wrong with one more PBEM.

Predesad, what parts of TN do you live?

predesad
Mar 19, 2004, 10:31 AM
in the middle of nowhere.

basically in TN you have about 5 choices:

Nashville
Memphis
Knoxville
Chattanooga
Clarksville

otherwise you just live in the country

but seriously, i live in northern West TN. if you've ever heard of Jackson or Paris, which i seriously doubt unless you have actually been here, i am near those towns. the town i live in is so small they haven't named it yet ; )

As for "unless" I lose. Go ahead and change that to "when" I lose.

As for Rocky2, sucks we gonna drop it. I had a pretty decent starting position :( But ya, it does feel a little empty with only 3. It would have made for some interesting diplomacy.

predesad
Mar 20, 2004, 01:15 PM
well, to be perfectly honest, at this point in the game there is nothing he did which hurts me, there is a slight depature from what i would have done, but it might not even be memorable within another 10-15 turns.

As for "unless" I lose. Go ahead and change that to "when" I lose.

Oh, I forgot to mention what the goody hut popped. It popped a...

"This is a test, this is a test of the Emergency Broadcasting System. This is only a test. BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP. This has been a test of the Emergency Broadcasting System. It was only a test. Had it been a real emergency you would have heard instructions after the beep. We now return you to the regular programming already in progress."

I can't believe I popped that. You guys are just going to see my score skyrocket now. Anyway, just wanted to make you guys jealous.

take a look at the portugal uu, the carrack, it does not sink in ocean, so when he gets to astronomy, if he lasts that long, he will have a significant naval advantage in addition to what he already has, if that nuclear bomb thingy doesn't work i will have to use these ICBM's captain commando planted in my capitol

nothing with the speakers, just that i dont have one of those super computers, i onlyhave 700 Mhz & 64 MB memory, the music in the game slows it down really bad. i am often takng 4-7 turns at a time, 2 of those games are in the industrial ages, another game takes at least 30 minutes to play the turn, and that's with the music off. it makes a huge difference and i greatly appreciate any cooperation.

Ok I never realised it had such an adverse effect on slower computers verywell I'll keep the sound of or play winamp in the background.

I guess you don't play huge pangea maps with full comps like I do then I suppose Predesad, not that my computers special (2 years old now, 1.7ghz, 256 ram, 64Mb geforce 2).

DogBoy
May 05, 2004, 05:12 PM
Don't matter to me. What I have discovered is you can play a 1.20 or a 1.22 game using either patch. Very weird.

predesad
May 05, 2004, 06:27 PM
if this was started as version earlier than 1.20 (like 1.15) then it should not be playable on 1.22, unless it is modded. Even if it just had a map made, though, it is a modded game as far as the patch is concerned. But as far as upgrading, I dont care. As far as the number change, the turn number in the victory status screen is always one turn behind because the first turn (4000 BC) is considered turn 0, the turn actually take place in between what we consider as turns. But the renumbering is fine and i will try to remember when i send it on.

Rocinante
May 05, 2004, 06:36 PM
false alarm--no need to change versions

I'd just as soon pass the game around with the same name everytime--rockypbem.sav or something and that way I wouldn't have to keep deleting the old saves when they pile up.--just keep overwriting the same one. But it doesn't really matter one way or the other.

btw, thanks for the great game so far--we are much further along than any other game I'm in.

May 07, 2004, 12:32 AM
just rename the file when you get it by clicking on the old file in your folder and it will overwrite it, i rename saves all the time because i keep a copy of each turn i have recieved and each turn i have sent. i could go back and delete the older ones, but it has come in handy a couple times to have saves from a couple turns back.

btw, i did not get a turn tonight

BTW I will probably not have any chance to play on May 13, 14, and 15--sorry guys but I'm chairing a three-day seminar at a facility only about a half hour from home but they've rented a room for me and expect me to stay there--I'd sneak home and play but I'm sure my wife would have an absolute fit if I did (she no like Civ3 as it is).

56b sent to Dogboy,

Sorry about slightly longer delay, had a lot of university work on my plate yesterday. I have gone back to calling the file name simply rockypbem as suggested. It is much easier.

Where's the game?

I don't have it. But it appears that when the forums went down this weekend most people used that as an excuse not to play the game. Not just this game, but every game I'm involved in (24 total). Very frustrating.

Predesad must have it--I'll email him

Ok, just found out that Predesad is going to be away for an unspecified amount of time. I just pm'd him asking him if he wants me to play his turns for him. If he says yes, and you guys don't have a problem with it, I can play his turns. If you guys do have a problem with it then I won't play his turn. Just let me know.

Unspecified?!?--and didn't even say he was leaving.

I'll be gone from Thursday afternoon to Sunday morning anyway so let's wait until then.

I think we should only play our own civs--if need be I can get someone to play Predesad's turns for a while.

Well, the pm I got from him wasn't from him. It was from a friend of his. His friend doesn't have his e-mail address but can access these forums. He also sent me his passwords to his games but didn't say if he wanted me to use them or not. That's why I pm'd the guy back.

But I understand if you don't want me to play his turn. In a 4 player game like this it could get unbalanced. I also don't know if he wants a replacement because he didn't say how long he was going to be gone for. I will try and find out. I just hope everything is ok with him.

Thanks, LouLong, C3C v1.20 or v1.22--both seem to work okay.
Don't know if Predesad will ever return, but if he does he may want his place back--we'll just have to wait and see.
In the meantime, welcome to our game, hope you have some fun playing it. Dogboy can send the password to you and you will be getting the saves from him also. Send the save to me: jmot AT sprynet DOT com
