Yesterday I've completed my first victory by space race, using the Romans, on cheiftan level, standard size map, 8 civs.

I began in the middle of a very large continent. As I've learned it is best to establish cities in the early game. Sending out several warriors to scout the terrain I found many screens of empty real estate. This is unusual (highly!) for a standard size map. Eventually I encountered the greeks to the south, and the Babylonians, Japanese, and French to the north. By this time it was around 2000 BC, and I had established several cities. It was apparent that mine and Japan's empires were the largest.

It was at this point that I decided to try for a space race victory. I focused my research on the required techs, skipping over the optional techs. A secondary goal of mine was to complete wonders or scientific advancements in historically plausible timeframes. (My previous victory had me barely in the modern age by the year 2000)

I entered into the middle ages around 900AD. I completed Leonardo's Workshop in 1425. :D Also in the 1500s, I sent my first vessels across the sea, in search of the new world.

I was able to enter into the Industrial age before 1800.

By 1902 my roman democracy had entered into the modern age. The apollo program was completed in 1972, and I acheived the space race victory in 2005.

It is also interesting to note that at no time during this game did I have a shortage of resouces, and also that no civ declared war against any other civ. This is atypical of the way that games normally play out.

Now I want to try to get a space race victory in the 1900s.
