View Full Version : New units: Golden Hind & English War Galleon
aaglo Feb 26, 2004, 02:18 PM Ships ahoy!
Actually these are two different versions of the Golden Hind:
- One version with almost-historical -looks (named Golden Hind)
- One version with Civ3 Man-O-War -looks (named War Galleon)
Here are the downloads:
Golden Hind (http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads6/GoldenHind.zip)
English War Galleon (http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads6/WarGalleon.zip)
Here are the animations of the Golden hind (the anims are exactly the same with war galleon - just the looks are a bit different)
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads6/HindDemo.gif
And here is attached the XL (256x256) of the English War Galleon. And I think you can guess why I call it English
[EDIT]: How convinient. I post specific english units to these forums, and my post count is 1666 - the year when the city of London was almost completely burned down :devil2:
Yoda Power Feb 26, 2004, 02:21 PM First to reply! Looks great:goodjob:
Gogf Feb 26, 2004, 02:23 PM Third post!
Perfect Aaglo! It's simply beautiful! I would have prefered it with more cannons, but it's still probably your best unit yet, IMO.
Cimbri Feb 26, 2004, 02:26 PM Ah Aaglo, very nice work. :goodjob:
Louis XXIV Feb 26, 2004, 02:35 PM It is kinda ironic, but I would have completely missed it ;)
The unit looks good, btw :D
thestonesfan Feb 26, 2004, 02:40 PM The master shipwright strikes again!
Thanks, aaglo!
Raw is War? Feb 26, 2004, 02:53 PM Very nice aaglo
Drift Feb 26, 2004, 02:57 PM Both are great, but like I said in the preview thread, I like War Galleon's sails more. Therefore I proclaim it as your best ship so far. :)
The Slayer Feb 26, 2004, 03:02 PM  :faint:
This ship is superb!! :omg!:
:goodjob: aaglo
W.i.n.t.e.r Feb 26, 2004, 03:14 PM calling this unit superb would be an understatement :king:
mrtn Feb 26, 2004, 03:22 PM Nice one mate!
Vuldacon Feb 26, 2004, 03:42 PM :goodjob: Totally Excellent aaglo! Both Ships are Great! I Especially Love the Esthetics you applied to the English War Galleon...Absolutely Stunning. The English in my MOD have declared this aaglo Day in your honor. Goes Straight into my Game .......Thanks.

I agree.
@Vuldacon: How about "We love the Aaglo day"?

Come on, we already have that, nearly every day recently (not that I complain !) ;) !
Grandraem Feb 26, 2004, 04:10 PM What more to say except excellent, as usual! :)
Ozymandias Feb 26, 2004, 04:15 PM Beautiful! -- You're spoiling us :D -- BTW love the sinking anim especially.

Dom Pedro II Feb 26, 2004, 05:27 PM Any ideas for application in the epic game? Anybody?
I think maybe I'm going to create a line of purely warships for civ...
I mean, there's very little naval specialization until Magnetism.
I think that maybe this could be a step between the Renaissance Galleass and the Frigate? Or perhaps more of a contemporary of the later Galleass but more powerful that could upgrade later to a Ship of the Line... thoughts?
EDIT: Silly me... I also meant to thank you and say that this could be, IMHO, one of your finest and most complex naval vessels ever.
TheMorpheus Feb 26, 2004, 05:44 PM Wonderful :goodjob:
I love your animation style, great work again :king:
embryodead Feb 26, 2004, 05:50 PM Golden Hind should be obviously a Privateer replacement for English (with better stats). Then, War Galleon could simply replace Galleon, also with additional attack point or sumfin.
They're beautiful of course :)
tjedge1 Feb 26, 2004, 06:22 PM :thumbsup: man your making my thumbs tired aaglo.
Dann Feb 26, 2004, 06:30 PM Holy ....!
Beautiful, mon. :goodjob: Thank you.
Downloading.....
spincrus Feb 26, 2004, 07:07 PM Simply stunning.
aaminion00 Feb 26, 2004, 07:55 PM Excellent :goodjob::thumbsup:
CamJH Feb 26, 2004, 08:14 PM Where do you find the time? :)
You keep cranking out great units, one after another!
Gogf Feb 26, 2004, 08:41 PM Aaglo, can I ask you a question? I decided I'm going to try to learn to do something in Pov-Ray, so can you post the files here? I want to see what they are like, and experiment a little. Thanks a lot!
Dom Pedro II Feb 26, 2004, 09:03 PM Hmmm... so perhaps then these should simply be put towards making the English navy consistently superior to others throughout the course of the later part of the game?
Makes sense for those of us who want to really make ultra-unique civilizations.
Ekmek Feb 26, 2004, 10:49 PM aaglo I love your stuff. Any chance you can do late 1800s stuff. Civ3 only has an iron clad and I think there is a huge gap between galleon-ironclads to destroyer-transport navies.

This is what I thought when I did these. I think, that English should have superior age-of-sail -navy.
And perhaps the french too. :hmm:  (after all, the ship-of-the-line available in conquests has french emblems in the sails)

Arne Feb 27, 2004, 02:24 AM I am two pages to late. Many thanks again, aaglo. This unit was sooo much needed. :worship:
It's GREAT! (both versions are great).
If you are going out of sailing ship ideas... how about a two masted sailing ship? ;) I think, a brigg or briggantine would be a good addition to all navys, privateer-fleets or trading fleets.
Mithadan Feb 27, 2004, 02:48 AM What can I say? It's so beautiful!
Gogf Feb 27, 2004, 05:18 AM Thanks so much Aaglo :)!

gen.dragolen Feb 27, 2004, 11:39 AM aaglo,
I too have no end of admiration for your artistic skills.
I have one request for a unit that should be very easy for you to do since it will be based off of your ancient age galleys: could you make a cargo ship from the galley models ?
I'll try to find some pictures for you, but a quick search hasn't yielded anything good. From the NG articles I have read, the ships were almost as long as the warships, but much wider to hold cargo. The one suggestion I would make would be to make the sails as the civ colour marker, though there is nothing as beautiful as a billowing white sail and some spray from the bow wave.

aaminion00 Feb 27, 2004, 12:51 PM
Holy crap... err... Gen. Dragon, there's a 5 line limit to signatures... lol
Gogf Feb 27, 2004, 01:34 PM Sounds like a good request Gen.Dragon, but as Aaminion said, there is a five line signature limit.

I could maybe try :crazyeye:
NateDawgNY Feb 28, 2004, 02:44 AM I'm posting a little late, but aaglo I did want to say that your units are top quality. IMHO these latest units have even surpassed those standards. Thank you for all your work!
Lusikka755 Feb 28, 2004, 03:55 AM This is going to my game for sure!
Great unit!!:goodjob:
Ivid Feb 28, 2004, 04:53 AM Thank you, aaglo, for another excellent naval unit! Your work is always superb. Thanks again for sharing your artistic talent!

ocedius Mar 18, 2004, 02:55 PM Is the file server down cuz I can't download any files.
Arne Mar 19, 2004, 02:11 AM No, the server isn't down. To me DL works.

capman Apr 15, 2004, 04:05 PM Hello aaglo
I join the praise with your great work in creating civ units.
I have a big favour to ask.
Any chance you could provide the civfanatics community with a "spanish" version of the golden hind unit? One without the three lions?
No markings on the sail. And if you want a version with a cross on one sail.
Would be much appreciated.
I'm trying to create a modified age of discovery
scenario with a potential spanish armada ;-)
The galleass unit will come in handy too.
Cheers
Capman
aaglo Apr 15, 2004, 05:19 PM that spanish think actually isn't such a bad idea...
we shall see.

would be great...
I'm using your corsair ship too, as privateer replacement.
The orginal privateer is way too modern for the 16th century.
What I'm also missing is an offensive land unit to raid harbour cities like Cadiz or caribbean ports. A pirate or buccaneer if you will. Wearing a big hat and handling a rapier and a pistol ;-)
Currently I'm using the man-at-arms unit, also found in this forum.
BeBro Apr 16, 2004, 07:54 AM Great units aaglo :)
Sword_Of_Geddon Apr 16, 2004, 01:09 PM Ah, I love sailing ships  . So much better than ugly modern naval vessels.
gorn Apr 16, 2004, 01:13 PM Beautiful ships, already in my mod ... but I'd like to 2nd the call for a Spanish Galleon and (more importantly, for me at least) a land-unit PIRATE! Shiver me timbers, t'would be nice!
capman Apr 17, 2004, 01:06 PM Ok, I searched the web for some pics of galleons, etc
Here are two quite good websites.
http://www.wolfson.ox.ac.uk/~ben/meagher.htm
http://www.greatgridlock.net/Sqrigg/squrig2.html
Visually the spanish galleon does not look that different from an elizabethan sea dog. Lower forecastles perhaps...
For the age of discovery scenario basically three types of ships are important.
caravels, carracks and galleons. The galleass is more a troop transporter and I can't imagine them leaving coastal areas...
As to a pirate unit. The swashbuckler from kinsman is already in use for that role, I read.
Additionally a dutch merchantman could be introduced as UU for the Netherlands. But I'm not sure if they would make sense in the period 1490 to 1640.
The frigate, man-o-war and ship of the line units are definitly pre 1640.
aaglo Apr 21, 2004, 03:33 AM I think I definitely should do some sort of large spanish war galleon (even if it was the last thing I'd do).
And same goes for the "Henri Grace a Dieu" (french war ship).
I can't help it - I just love old sailing ships... :)

Hm, french? The name of cource, but wasn't "Henri Grace a Dieu" an english ship? I think it's the same ship, wich was called "Great Harry" by the people. ;)
aaglo Apr 21, 2004, 06:21 AM oh
so it was  - I have only heard the name of the ship and saw pictures, never saw anything written about it.

IbnSina Apr 22, 2004, 10:11 AM These are outstandingly good units! I like (and use) most of your ships (and bombardment units). Keep up the great work!
