Hello.
I'm attempting to create my first Conquests PBEM game but Civ locks up at the "Assigning Team colors..." progress bar.
I've shut down firewalls, AV, etc. Tried a million different combinations of names, civs, etc. Still no luck.
Any ideas?

ACK!
This is exactly what is happening to me with the 1.27 patch for bloody PTW...
Sorry as this isnt a solution but an "I feel your pain" type of response..."

I just got a new Radeon 9600 Pro with the latest 4.3 catalyst driver, and now the exact same thing is happening to me! It didn't with my old GF4 MX440.
Maybe it's a driver problem?

Did you manage to fix your problem? Care to tell me how?
No one has any similar experiences to share? Maybe we can figure this out...

Ok - I've had a search, and haven't found anything conclusive, although there are a couple of things for you to try.
Take a look at this thread (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=68135&highlight=assigning+colors).
It appears that the problem might be due to something about gamespy trying to locate an internet connection when you're not connected to the internet.
This post in particular seemed interesting:

I figured out how to play PBEM/Hotseat without an internet connection, and its not quite straightforward. From the main menu, select Multiplayer. On the "Choose Multiplayer Game Type" popup, select "internet" NOT "hotseat" or "PBEM." When connection to GameSpy can't be made, you will be dumped to the main muliplayer menu, and location should be set to "Local Games." Then, select "host," and you will get the multiplayer setup menu. Select "Hotseat" or "PBEM" as the game type, set turn timer to "none," select your game and players, and then "Launch." Voila! Because C3C already knows GameSpy isn't available, it doesn't lock up trying to find it.
I hope this helps. :D
The other option might be to make sure you are connected to the internet when you try to configure the game. :)
