View Full Version : Announcing heihojin's 14th PBEM game - Conquests!
heihojin Mar 13, 2004, 04:05 PM I am now taking signups for my 14th PBEM game!
This is a Civilization III: Conquests epic game and requires the latest versions of Civilization III (currently v1.29f) and Civilization III: Conquests (currently v1.15 Beta) to participate.
So far, I have the following confirmed players: heihojin (me) - random civIf you would like to play, please post a reply, send a private message, or e-mail me with your e-mail address and civ preference (if any). I require your e-mail address to hold your spot!
Please also either update your profile to indicate your location - city, state (if you're in the U.S.A.), and country - or indicate your location in your request to play. Alternatively, you could specify your time zone. I use this information to arrange turn sequence from East to West around the globe.
I am willing to customize your civ for you if you provide the appropriate information for the fields (Formal, Noun, Adjective, Title). Please note that your civ is considered public information at the start of the game; if you opt for a customized, random civ, you are expected to inform the group of the actual civ given to you immediately following your first turn.
The game will begin as soon as I have eight confirmed players. If you have not specified a civ preference by the time the game launches, you will be assigned a random civ. Spots for the game and civ preferences will generally be filled first-come, first-serve, as determined by the timestamp of the request; however, I may deliberately favor some requests over others in the interest of balancing my games.
Turn summaries will likely not be posted to this or any other forum, as I am far more interested in actually playing the game than with posting turns in a public forum. If you would like to post a turn summary here for the benefit of forum visitors, however, feel free to do so.
Commitments
By requesting to play you commit to the following: You agree to contact me (through e-mail, private message, a third party or other means) as soon as possible if you encounter technical difficulties or other circumstances that prevent you from fulfilling these commitments. You agree to act in a courteous manner toward all other players at all times in your "out-of-game" communication.
You agree to abide by the general protocol for gameplay as set forth in the welcome e-mail, as well as any changes to the protocol I may make during the course of the game.
You agree to inform the group when you are going to be unavailable for a period of greater than 24 hours.
You agree to check your e-mail at least once daily (at least twice daily is preferred).
You agree to promptly respond to all messages - immediately, if possible.
You agree to complete and forward your turn within 24 hours of receiving it.
You agree to refrain from "in-game" communication with another player until making contact with that player's civilization.
You agree to play the game to completion unless personal or technical circumstances render it impossible for you to do so.If you would like to peruse the general protocol for gameplay prior to signing up, let me know and I will happily e-mail it to you.
"In-game" communication refers to sharing information about your civ or other players' civs, making deals, proposing alliances, etc.. "Out-of-game" communication primarily refers to administrative matters (such as "Dude, where's my turn?" e-mails), but also includes innocuous conversation (such as "Where is everyone from?" e-mails).
Default Game Settings and Rules
Unless specified otherwise, the default game settings and rules will be as follows: Game Type: Play By Email
Game Mode: Standard
Turn Timer: None
World Size: Standard
Barbarian Activity: Roaming
Land Mass: Continents
Water Coverage: 70% Water
Climate: Normal
Temperature: Temperate
Age: 4 Billion
Difficulty: Regent
Allow Domination Victory
Allow Space Race Victory
Allow Diplomatic Victory
Allow Conquest Victory
Allow Cultural Victory
Allow Civ-Specific Abilities
Allow Cultural Conversions
Preserve Random SeedPlease note that many of these rules are open to discussion beforehand; I will generally side with the majority opinion.
One question that has frequently arisen is whether reloading the game is allowed. Although the "Preserve Random Seed" rule removes most of the incentive for reloading, there are of course other advantages. Unfortunately I know of no way to regulate the number of times the game is reloaded, so any rule prohibiting reloading is impossible to enforce. Furthermore, reloading seems quite acceptable in the event of an error, e.g. if you make a mistake in moving your units. Because I am reluctant to support rules that cannot be enforced, and because I'm sure that I personally will have to reload at least one game due to an error, I do not have any rules regulating reloads. Ultimately, it's a question of what provides the most enjoyment for you as a player.
Please note that once you make contact with another player's civ, your diplomacy options are completely unrestricted. Feel free to invent whatever deals you wish, regardless of whether they are enforceable from within the game or not.
These games tend to fill up quickly, so submit your request to play now! If you do not make this game, I always accept requests for alternate spots in this game and any of my other current games, so there's a good chance you can get in at least one of my games as an alternate.
Here's to the next war!

Thanks Sorry EL_OSO, LouLong private messaged me before you posted. I'll be glad to send you an e-mail when I begin taking signups for my next epic game. It won't be until April at the earliest, though.

EL_OSO Mar 15, 2004, 04:25 PM No need to apologize. I assumed that was what happened. You can definitely count me in for the next one. April is not too far away. :D

heihojin Apr 03, 2004, 05:51 AM It seems I was a little hasty in requesting the upgrade to v1.20, as I simply assumed (wrongly) that Firaxis gave a damn about their PBEM players. Once again, their fumbling developers have screwed us and I am forced to ask you to maintain an obsolete v1.15 Beta installation.
It is relatively simple to maintain two distinct installations of Conquests. If you haven't yet upgraded, and are still using v1.15 Beta: Rename the Civilization III\Conquests folder to "Conquests v1.15 Beta" or something like that.
Uninstall Conquests with "Add/Remove Programs" from your Control Panel.
Reinstall Conquests to the default folder.
Install the patches for both v1.20 and v1.22.
If you have already installed the v1.20 or v1.22 patches, you can follow the above steps to rename your Conquests folder to "Conquests v1.22", uninstall Conquests, reinstall Conquests, and then install the v1.15 Beta patch. Thankfully, all three patches can still be found at http://www.civfanatics.com/civ3patches.shtml.
I have sent what I'm sure will be the first of many negative feedback submissions to Firaxis. If you would like to add your two cents and let them know how miserable they've made your game-playing experience, the URL is http://www.firaxis.com/contact_gamefeedback.cfm.

DogBoy Apr 03, 2004, 06:12 AM heihojin,
I have already played game #13 with the 1.20 version before getting your e-mail and this post. Do I need to go back now and replay my turn with the old version? Also, why are we going back to 1.15? Yes, 1.20 has some bugs in it, but it's still playable right? Or is it unplayable for some people? I have played a lot of my 20 different PBEM games in the past several days with the 1.20 patch and all work. My single player games work also. Just wondering what the problem is.

I patched to v1.22 and attempted to load a v1.15 Beta save game. It failed to load.
I am unsure as to what the extent of the incompatibility is. The CFC home page states that v1.20 cannot load save games from earlier versions. The official Civilization III site doesn't even mention v1.22 yet, but states that v1.20 can load earlier saved games. So this is what we are going to do: For the current turn (3550 BC) for Game 14, play it as v1.15 Beta.
When I get the turn beginning 3500 BC, I will attempt to convert it to v1.20. Assuming I am successful, we will play 3500 BC under v1.20.
When I get the turn beginning 3450 BC, I will attempt to convert it to v1.22. Assuming I am again successful, we will play under v1.22 from that point forward.Did I mention that I hate Firaxis? :saiyan:

DogBoy Apr 03, 2004, 06:33 AM Lemme just ask one question then. Like I said, I already played the game #13 which is the Middle Ages game using 1.20 before I saw your e-mail and the post on CFC. I also sent the game IsildursHeir, and then I sent him another e-mail telling him not to play the game. I did a lot that turn. My question is, do you want me to replay that turn using 1.15, or can I put that off until we figure out if 1.20 is going to work. Let me know what you want me to do regarding the Middle Ages game and I will do it. Thanks.

LouLong Apr 03, 2004, 07:10 AM I had already played my turn with 1.20 before getting your mail. It loaded without any troubles and I had sent it to Portuga already...

I had already played my turn with 1.20 before getting your mail. It loaded without any troubles and I had sent it to Portuga already... OK, we'll do this instead then: If you have not yet played your 3550 BC turn, please do so using v1.20.
When I get the turn beginning 3500 BC, I will attempt to convert it to v1.22. Assuming I am successful, we use v1.22 from that point forward.Oh, I forgot to mention...
I HATE FIRAXIS!!!!! :wallbash:
heihojin
heihojin Apr 04, 2004, 07:48 AM I just received the turn beginning 3500 BC, which I presume was played by LouLong and all players following him using v1.20. I then attempted to load the game using v1.22, and it failed to load.
Thanks to Firaxis, we now have to decide which obsolete version of the game to maintain so that we may continue playing this game. We may choose either v1.15 Beta or v1.20. Given the known problems with v1.20, I recommend that we stick with v1.15 Beta. Unfortunately, this will require replaying the 3550 BC turn.
I will wait 24 hours before resending the 3550 BC turn to be replayed using v1.15 Beta. If anyone has a good argument for choosing v1.20 instead, please post it.
I really, really, REALLY hate Firaxis. :wallbash:
heihojin
DogBoy Apr 04, 2004, 08:19 AM My only good arguement for using 1.20 is it works. I am now in 21 PBEM games and everyone is using 1.20. I don't want to have two versions of civ3 on my computer. But if everybody wants 1.15, then I will. Yes, 1.20 has some problems, but those problems won't help or hurt anybody and give anybody an unfair advantage. Only my $.02.
LouLong Apr 04, 2004, 11:31 AM I agree with dogboy. BTW

DogBoy Apr 04, 2004, 04:09 PM LouLong, you doing ok there? You seem like you want to ask me something but the words just aren't coming out.
theforceman Apr 05, 2004, 04:58 AM I agree with DogBoy as well, on his grounds. (Except that I'm only in 2 PBEMs - how on Earth do you manage to keep track of 21 games?!!:) )
heihojin Apr 05, 2004, 06:01 AM Very well, we'll keep the game on v1.20.

A problem occured when I was typing but I did not realize it had taken 4 posts altogether !
Anyway , just wanted to say : BTW aren't you supposed to be in PBEM 13th thread (because Heihojin keeps on reminding you) :D
DogBoy Apr 05, 2004, 05:08 PM Yes, I should have been posting in the hhj#13 thread, but I didn't realize until after several posts.
I keep track of 21 different e-mails by using an excel spreadsheet. It lets me know the name of the game, what the save is called (everybody is different), the date I sent the turn (always the date I receive it cause I play too much), and peace/tech trade/wars with the people in the game. It's really quite simple, and lots of fun because some of these games take days to get back to me.

You too!?!
I keep track of my Heihojin PBEMs with an Excel spreadsheet, where I record the dates and times when I recieve the turn, when I send the confirmation, when I send the turn, and when I recieve that confirmation. And then I keep track of some events (research, wonders, etc.) just for the heck of it. But I never thought of recording peace treaties, trades, and wars! (On the other hand, I've only come across that once in all of my PBEMs... ;) )
heihojin Apr 07, 2004, 01:27 AM I've finally sent the 3500 BC turn out as v1.20. I'm sorry about the delay; I became somewhat distracted this weekend.
This game will remain as v1.20 until further notice.

DogBoy Apr 07, 2004, 04:33 PM Vancouver, I can see that you are as addicted to this game as I am. I even keep "battle reports" for some of my games. I take screen shots to record what has been going on. In one game I'm currently playing, I have a web site. It's a crappy web site because, well, I suck at web sites. It's a 2 player game where each of us has 4 civs. Very challenging and very fun. Go here if you want to check it out.

Vancouver 2010 Apr 07, 2004, 08:14 PM OK, maybe you're slightly more addicted to it than I am. But I think I'll do that for Heihojin XV... :mischief:
DogBoy Apr 25, 2004, 08:34 PM This save is for Eliitmees in the chance that he's not getting my e-mails.
MFCamillus Apr 25, 2004, 09:23 PM He went on vacation Friday through Sunday. He just may not have had a chance to get through the backlog yet.
DogBoy Apr 25, 2004, 09:25 PM Ok, thanks. I was just wondering if something bad had happened to him. Glad to know he's ok.

DogBoy Jun 03, 2004, 05:44 AM Don't know. I got my turn yesterday and sent to EliitMees. He should respond today that he got it.
LouLong Jun 03, 2004, 05:58 AM Ah ok then. Did not know it was still running as I had not gotten it for a while.

EliitMees Jul 01, 2004, 04:36 PM I am going on vacation tomorrow and will be back on 12 July. My apologies for slowing the game down.
theforceman Jul 05, 2004, 09:11 AM I'll be on vacation from the 12th through the 27th. I could try to find a stand-in, though, if you can't wait.
DogBoy Jul 05, 2004, 10:42 AM I would say that is up to you and Heihojin. If you trust your stand-in, then get him. If you don't trust him, then I'm sure Heihojin, and the rest of us, don't mind waiting. I was gone, then EliitMees, so no reason why you can't.
LouLong Jul 05, 2004, 11:20 AM I agree 100% with Dogboy's point of view.
Most PBEMs are slowed down because of holidays but it is perfectly understandable. It is too bad you leave right when ElittMees comes back for two more weeks but there is no way you can organize your holidays because of PBEMs (or maybe we could set up a PBEM players travel company ;-)).
theforceman Jul 07, 2004, 04:01 AM Yeah! "Bring your laptop and join the PBEM Travel Company to Egypt, where we will sit in the shade of the Pyramids playing C3C on a WLAN connection!" :)

DogBoy Sep 01, 2004, 05:59 PM I don't mean to stick my nose where it doesn't belong, but he did say he would have to settle down before playing game #14 on the Ascendancy board.
theforceman Sep 07, 2004, 06:54 AM I'm so sorry, EliitMees, I should have notified you too. Anyway, I'm right now in the Czech Republic teaching English for half a year or something. I hadn't been able to connect to the Internet until now (my apartment doesn't even have a phone!), but from now on I can connect from the school I'm working in with my laptop. I expect to send the turn tomorrow (I forgot the CD in my apartment, doh!).

From now on please use this one: eliitmees @ meritec . ee
