Theodora's Gambit.

Germany (me) is to the North of Constantinople and is a big power. France is NW and powerful and The Ottoman Empire is small and W. Byzantium has 3 island cities. Aztecs are Med and N of France and have planet a colony called Tula on Germany's NE coast.

All powers are Republics.

Germany has a large fortified city called Konisburg 6 tiles North of Constantinople. There is an Iron mine just South with a fortress on top of it manned by 1 Med inf.

In Theodora's Court.

Theodora (polite): So Von Ribbentrop, what have you for me today.

Von Ribbentrop (polite): Well we Scientific folk have a machine called a Printing press and are developing a wonderful new government called Democracy that will make us wise and rich.

What will you offer for it ?

Theodora (polite): 30 gold.

Von Ribbentrop (polite): Well a fair price is Astronomy

Theodora: We will trade Astronomy for Printing Press and 50 Gold.

Von Ribbentrop (gracious): We Accept. This has been a most profitable meeting for both of us:

Theodora: Want to Renew right of passage ?

Von Ribbentrop (polite): Fine by us. If you like send 3 Longbowmen and 2 spearmen and take Tula. Bismark hates the Aztecs.

General Constantine: My lady an excellent plan.


Domestic Advisor: We need another city.

Exit Von Ribbentrop (polite):

Chapter 2. Theodora’s Big mistake.

Theodora: We need another city but Tula is too far away. The city of Konisburg is the one I want. Too long the sight of its walls and the uncouth lout in the fortress has spoiled my view. The last thing I want to see in the morning is some German lout smoking, slouching, urinating on my workers and scratching his private parts. General Constanine Get Me Konisburg !

General Constanine: Germany has a much bigger military and our last spy reported 2 Pikemen and a Med inf in the city of Konisburg. I will need 5 longbows to have a chance and 3 more spearmen to hold it.

Domestic Advisor: That will waste 50 shields.

Theodora (Furious): Build me an Army to take Konisburg. Do it now!

Science Advisor: I have wonderful news: We have a source of Saltpeter and can build Musketmen that are better than German Pikemen in every way !

Foreign Affairs Advisor: Bismark will be incredibly furious – If we must fight a war fight the horrid Aztecs.

Theodora: He’s a horrid little man always demanding things. Offer him an alliance against Germany. I need money – sell gunpowder !

Theodora gets her money but the Germans buy gunpowder from the Greeks.

All is peaceful in the world except for a small border skirmish on the Aztec Greek border.

Meanwhile an intrepid force of 5 Byzantine Longbowmen race down the road to Konisburg and rain their arrows on Konisburg under cover of darkness.

Sorry - 3 part story.

Part 3 is on how Germany formed (or bought) an alliance with France and the Ottoman's and attacked. The key strategic move was the founding of the German city of Salt on top of the Byzantine saltpeter source claiming it for Germany and more importantly denying it to Theodora.

From then on it was a straight Med inf smash on spearmen by france and germany that wiped theodora off the face of Pangea losing 3 cities to the French and 3 to the Germans.

The key point of Theodora's Gambit is never ever try it !

10 AM Bismark's Cabinet Meeting.

Bismark (B): My maid told me we are at war with Byzantium - is this a joke ?

Defence Minister Rommel (R): Do these look like a joke ?

R places a longbow and a byzantine uniform (bloodstained) on the table.

R: Approximately 5 byzantine longbowmen attacked Konisberg last night killing 2 pikemen and wounding our med inf. Lieutenant Von Stauffenberg attacked the remaining longbowman and captured these.

His unit has been awarded the Iron cross and konisberg has been relieved and the enemy retreated. I have also requested more troops from Minister Speer.

Bismark. This is a right of passage betrayal by a friend. If the Witch Queen Theodora wants to behave like an Aztec treat her as such. Rommel - Give me a plan. Speer - Give Rommel what he needs.

Speer. I can produce 20 units in 4 turns for the loss of only 50 shields and have given the order.

Rommell: I have sent task forces to cut off Constantinople's roads and am initiating operation SALT.

B: Salt?

R: Simple - we build a city on the Byzantine saltpeter source and claim it for ourselves.

Von Ribbontrop: Rommel told me that an alliance with the Ottoman and or the French will put pressure on the western enemy cities and I seek permission to trade technologies for them.

Bismark: You have it. Get Goebbels to write me a speech. I intend to write to the families of all the german soldiers who died because of that Theodora Witch.

Guard (Corporal Hitler). The byzantine ambassador requests to see you Mr President.

Bismark. Take him and his family and staff to Konisberg. Exchange them for our people in Constantinople.

Rommel. What are our rules of engagement ?

Bismark. Wipe out Byzatium - that is all.
