View Full Version : USB Flash memory key help
MarineCorps Mar 20, 2004, 07:27 PM How do I use this thing anyways? How do I move things to it so that I can transfer to another computer? As I can't seem to figure it out. Wizard came up when I restarted the computer with the USB key in it and said something about not finding a drive for it. How the hell do I use this damn thing?
hbdragon88 Mar 20, 2004, 09:39 PM Well you put it into the USB slot. On mine at least, the computer automatically detects it and the drive shows up in My Computer as "Removable Drive - (letter)". You simply drag-and-drop as you would with a flopy.
bobgote Mar 21, 2004, 02:05 AM Ok, it depends on your OS.
XP should have drivers in built, but if not, the wizard that came up should link to drivers for it. if not that, then go to the website of the company that made the USB drive, and their site should have a number of drivers there that you can download. (might be in support section if not immediately visible)
CivGeneral Mar 21, 2004, 02:09 AM Same with mines. My USB Flash Memory Keys (or Cards as I call them) are automadicly detected in the computer and is reconised as a removable drive (On my laptop I also have a plug in Floppy Drive that plugs into the USB drive)
The location and drive letter on where the USB Flash Memory Cards depends on the computer. Usualy the USB Memory Flash Card is listed as Drive "E" (Assuming that "D" is the CD, "C" is the Main HD, and "A" is the Floppy).
MarineCorps Mar 21, 2004, 07:37 AM ok this is what I got from the product info: Easy to use - Operates as a letter drive, just like a floppy (No driver needed after Windows® 98). I use 98. SO what does that mean? :crazyeye: And the product is from dell. and the computer I'm moving stuff to is an old HP 6470z as my parents got a new computer and I get that one for my personal use.
@CG: A: Floppy
C: Hard drive
D: Zip drive
M: Cd drive
ainwood Mar 21, 2004, 01:26 PM That means that you need to install a driver. ;)
Did the USB disk come with a CD-ROM? If so, then there should be an installation setup for the driver on that or at a bare minimum a driver that you can install via the control panel under add / remove hardware).
Otherwise, try to get a driver for it from the manufacturers website.
MarineCorps Mar 21, 2004, 01:37 PM The key came in a box smaller then my hand. I got a driver and installed it (I think) but can't seem to get the key to work with the driver.
ainwood Mar 21, 2004, 01:44 PM Step us through what you're doing:
* When you put the USB disk into a USB port, what happens?
* With the disk in the USB port, go to control panel, then system, then hardware, then device manager. On the list of installed hardware, look at the Universal Serial Bus Controllers item. Is your drive listed there? Does it have a warning mark (yellow exclamation mark?)
MarineCorps Mar 21, 2004, 01:56 PM 1. Lights up with a yellow light that blinks.
2. Looking now.
FireBall Mar 21, 2004, 01:57 PM Go to Dell Suport, check if they have any drivers, if they do, download them, if not, then call their Toll-free number, they ought to be able to help you. This sounds liek a driver problem though, try re-installing/updating your driver from Dell's site.
BTW: Are you sure that the older HP computer has a USB Drive, fi not, then the USB Key probably wont work :D...
Also, try inserting the key into the older computer if it has a USB drive, see if it works.
MarineCorps Mar 21, 2004, 02:01 PM The driver is what I am having problems with now/
@ainwood: Um, for some reason the drive is not listed. The USB key is and it has the yellow ! on it.
ainwood Mar 21, 2004, 02:04 PM Ok - double-click on the USB key in the device manager, and see if it gives you an error description. You should be able to install a driver from the form you get when you double-click. Its likely that you simply haev the wrong driver. :)
MarineCorps Mar 21, 2004, 02:10 PM it says "the drivers fo this device are not installed (code 28). To reinstall the drivers for this device, click reinstall drivers" The it brings up Update device driver Wizard. And since I don't have a drive I can't upgrade.
FireBall Mar 21, 2004, 03:10 PM Can you tell it to "Look for Updates on the Intenet?"
ainwood Mar 21, 2004, 03:14 PM No - update driver also means install new driver! You need to download a driver from the internet.
Can you tell me that make and model for the USB device?
MarineCorps Mar 21, 2004, 03:25 PM USB device? You mean the key? It's a dell.
Or do you mean the USB: Intel82371AB/ EB PCI to USB universal host.
ainwood Mar 21, 2004, 03:42 PM The USB Key. Does it have a service tag or a model number?
Edit: Try this link. (http://www.memorykeytools.com/win98.asp)
bobgote Mar 21, 2004, 08:04 PM might not just be the USB key. you may need to install USB drivers too (although probably not given your last post).
Like i said before though, just go to the manufacturer website and get the driver for 98 from there (if they didn't give you a driver cd or disk).

Ironiclly thats the one I found off the dell website.
This is the key.http://search.dell.com/searchcom_redirect.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&cs=&k=USB+Flash+memory+key&cat=snp&tdc=2&tcn=9&curcatni=1&curcatna=dhs&tdcp=2&lbcp=1&ubcp=2&skuid=&inten=prodDetail&ty=content&cd=1&sfp=res&redp=http%3a%2f%2faccessories.us.dell.com%2fsna%2f productdetail.aspx%3fsku%3d311-3729%26c%3dus%26l%3den%26cs%3d19%26category_id%3d4 325%26page%3dexternal
MarineCorps Mar 22, 2004, 06:57 AM ok I got the drive installed last night but when I restarted the computer I got a window protection error and had to use safe mode to open windows.
MarineCorps Mar 22, 2004, 08:14 AM OK I tired to install it on a smiliar computer that also has win98. The driver installs but does not work, it has a yellow ! on it.
ainwood Mar 22, 2004, 01:35 PM I suggest you try Dell tech support.
A random option might be to try installing win98 service pack 1: http://www.softwarepatch.com/windows/win98sp1.html
MarineCorps Mar 22, 2004, 01:46 PM Er, installing things might be more then a little difficult as the computer is no longer hooked up to the internet.
MarineCorps Mar 26, 2004, 07:05 AM Figured out what was the problem with the key. the driver I installed was meant for win98SE.
Xi 12 Mar 26, 2004, 03:11 PM I have the same problem with my memory key(lexar media) and my computer with windows 98.
I can't download the drivers either, because it isn't hooked up to the internet.
It works on my XP, thankfully.
