I've tried the emperor level in civ3 a couble of times, and failed miserably. Usually the computer beats me in the tech race so badly that I just give up midway through the middle ages. Monarch, on the other hand, seems to be getting too easy. It is very rare that I lose a monarch game, and if I do it's usually because of bad luck (like starting all alone on a small island).

But this time I have decided to play one emperor-game through! I might win it, I might lose it, but at least I've played one through.

So why am I posting this here?

Because I want your advice. What am I doing wrong? What am i doing right? All feedback will be appreciated. Even about the writing that I do, altough I would more than anything appreciate feedback from the game itself!

Anyway, let's get started:

***

Version: C3C v. 1.22
World Size: Small
Barbarians: Sedentary
Landmass and water coverage: Continents, 70 %
Climate: Normal
Temperature: Temperate
Age: 4 billion yrs

***

And what nation should I pick?

Well, it’s a big game for me, so I want to pick the greatest nation in the world. For that I needed to download a mod from creation and customization forum, but finally I got it..

FINLAND! :p

Agricultural and Scientific nation with Pottery and Bronze Working as starting techs, Jaegers as special units (replacing infantry, faster movement) and president Kekkonen as leader! :D

CHAPTER I: TWO NATIONS IN THE SAME CRADLE
4000 B.C. – 1000 B. C.

Kekkonen, a man with a bald head and a funny furry hat, had led his barbarian tribe known as the “Finns” from the cold mountains of the west to a nice valley by the Northern Ocean. The area was not exactly the best possible spot to start a grand civilization that would once rule the entire world – there were loads of almost unpassable marsh in the northwest and hills and forests in the east - but there were also some good grassland in the south.
“STOP!” yelled Kekkonen at his tribe when they reached this spot. “It is time for us to start our own civilization”, he said – and so it was done. The city of Helsinki was established at this exact spot and the seeds of an empire had been cropped. Finland had became a real state.

Kekkonen looked around his empire – and more importantly, beyond the small borders of it. As the cultural influence of his palace grew, the borders of Finland expanded and Kekkonen called Tarja, his domestic advisor and closest friend, to tell about all the things that were found as the empire grew.
“Well, we’ve found tobacco from the northeast.. I hear that one can smoke that stuff, get hooked on it and die!” responded Tarja.
“Sounds good to me! But I want to know more! Let’s build a warrior who we can send to investigate unknown territories!”
And so it was done, as Kekkonen’s word was the law in Finland. A warrior started to travel from Helsinki towards the eastern hills, and soon this lonely fighter arrived to a mountain. Being the gutsy Finn that he was, this warrior decided to climb over it – and once reaching the top he saw surprising things. He saw and ocean far, far away. He saw jungle, loads and loads of jungle. But more especially, he saw people moving somewhere down in the west. This warrior was in a very privileged situation; as he got to be the first Finn to realize that they were not alone on this planet.

The Americans, as these people called themselves, were technologically advanced and their leader, Lincoln, looked VERY annoyed. Kekkonen soon figured that for some weird reason the Americans were annoyed with him.

3000 B.C.
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads7/3000bc.gif
A man called Livy has ranked both America and Finland at the bottom scum of the planet.
A settler that started out from Helsinki has found IVORY by the coast of the river few squares south from Helsinki. Seems like a good spot for a city.. also makes me wanna go to mathematics quickly, soon I can build Zeus’s temple..

2900 B.C.
City of Turku established. More ivory found in the east.

2710 B.C.
Alphabet discovered! Trated alphabet to America for masonry and some cash. I’m on my way to mathematics baby! I begin building a curragh in Helsinki immediately, I wanna see how big my continent is.

1990 B.C.
2 new cities – Viipuri in the east, along the same river (and ivories) as Turku, and Tampere in the west, near two sources of incence.

1725 B.C.
Got mathematics! Okay, it’s time to make the final plan for this game: I want the Americans out of my continent. I also want to go beyond their land to see if there are other nations there. In all scenarios that I have about the future of this game, the Americans must be dead. They are more technologically advanced than me (I don’t even have warrior code), so I think that a good way to get rid of them is to build the Statue of Zeus to my capital. Turku and Viipuri shall have granaries, so they’ll be the cities pumbing out settlers, while Helsinki concentrates on the wonder. I don’t even need a temple there since I now have incence and ivory.
Trated mathematics to America for Wheel and money. They don’t have ivory so I don’t have to worry.

1525 B.C.
American troops enter my territory. They have one warrior and one settler two squares away from Helsinki. I think they are trying to get to the north, beyond Turku and Viipuri, where there is not only good territory but also some ivory left.

1500 B.C.
Man, things are starting to go wrong.. my curragh, which had found a small island from north of Helsinki and travelled south, all the way to American city of Atlanta, was sunk because of a bad mistake I made. However, the curragh did manage to bring info about a new land southeast from Atlanta before it sunk.

1475 B.C.
I bring spearmen from both Turku and Helsinki to those free norhtern squares where the American settler might go after I demand them to leave. So they would have to return to their own land instead of going to the north where I'm planning to build a city soon. Why didn’t I bring warriors instead of spearmen? I don’t know, I thought it wouldn’t matter. But it did..

It started out as any other normal summer day of the year 1475 B.C. Kekkonen was having a lazy day in his palace in the Royal Square of Helsinki, when suddenly two of his closest advisors, domestic advisor Tarja and military advisor Mannerheim, rushed in.
“SIRE! The American warriors and settlers who we asked to leave..” started Tarja.
“Yes? I recon the have now returned to their own land?” asked Kekkonen
“They are surrounding Helsinki! We just demanded them to leave and they DECLARED WAR ON US! And all we have is one warrior defending our capital!”
“Wh.. what! Bring us help, Mannerheim!” Kekkonen yelled to his military advisor.
“Help is on it’s way from Turku and Tampere, sire. But they won’t reach us in time if the Americans really intent to attack. And if they do, they have a good chance of taking this city out. We have one ace in our pack of cards, however: their settler. If the American warrior attacks our warrior and loses, we will get their settler. Are the Americans ready to take that chance?” wondered Mannerheim.
“Bring me info as soon as it gets here!” yelled Kekkonen.
***

Two hours later military advisor Mannerheim returned.
“The Americans have left. They are heading towards the north and are propably going to start a city there and we can’t really stop them now, but at least our capital was saved.

1450 B.C.
Yup, I am now officially at war. Spearmen start returning towards Helsinki and Turku. American troops all around my southern border. Mostly warriors, they do not come to my territory. Propably they are heading for Helsinki, or maybe Tampere, which doesn’t have much defence. I can’t stop thinking that if the American “expedition” had had only ONE archer along with them, I would have propably lost my capital! I cannot allow this kind of mistakes continue to happen.

1350 B.C.
The Americans build the city of Chicago in the north with the same units that were threatning Helsinki 100 years ago. Three American warriors arrive to the same western mountain where my warrior once made contact with them thousands of years ago. They are heading towards Helsinki, there is no question about it. I’ll start bringing help from Tampere and Turku, where an archer will be finished next turn (see the map). They should make it in time (except for the archer), but.. will they be enough to stop the invaders? I think they should be, I wonder why the Americans aren’t using any archers themselves.

http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads7/anotherattack.gif

1300 B.C.
THE GREAT BATTLE OF HELSINKI
Help arrived just in time! The first American warrior attacks the spearman in Helsinki and kills it – so Helsinki would have fallen without the outside help. But now, as there is one extra spearman and one extra warrior, it is just too much for the remaining americans. Another warrior attacks, but this time my spearman walks away with the victory. The last American warrior is a coward and decides to fortify himself on the hills instead of attacking. Later he is attacked by my archer and my warrior. Both of them die, and the American warrior flees from the battlescene, not wanting to challenge the remaining spearman in Helsinki.

Finnish losses: 1 warrior, 1 spearman, 1 archer.
American losses: 2 warriors.

It’s not gonna be easy from now on, Turku AND Tampere will both be left undefended for at least 1 turn. Looks like Turku will have to stay undefended for 2. Luckily I can bring the warrior in Viipuri in there in just 1 turn. But still, the Americans are attacking aggressively all the time. I just hope I can defend my lands for as long as I get my wonder, then it should get a bit easier.

1175 B.C.
American troops – only warriors, once again – surround Turku. American warrior also arrives from the north, city of Chicago, to challenge my newly-founded city of Hameenlinna. They’ll reach it in 2 turns, I think I can get a warrior there just in time from Helsinki. Can’t bring more than one, though, since I need help to defend Turku as well. I can’t help but thinking that if my cities weren’t so close to each other, and if I didn’t have working road connections, OR if the Americans were building archers instead of warriors, I would have already lost this game.

1150 B.C.
THE GREAT BATTLE OF TURKU
My archer saved my ass. It succesfully defended itself after my spearman died. One American warrior didn’t attack, but instead decided to fortify himself to the jungles near Turku after all his buddies had died in the attck. Next turn this heroic archer attacked the jungles. The battle was tight, both units had only 1 health point left, but my archer came out as the winner. He became my first veteran unit, and the American threat was – once again – rejected.

Kekkonen and Lincoln stared at each other calmly, both at their own ends of the table. They had set up a meeting in the jungles south from Turku to stay on neutral ground when negotiating, so Kekkonen had brought some soldier with him to keep the wild animals away. His foreign minister, Erkki, had also came along, as well as his military advisor Mannerheim.
Finaly, Kekkonen opened his mouth.
“This war has lasted long enough. thousands and thousands of Americans and Finns will continue to die if this madness isn’t stopped. I set up this meeting to propose a peace treaty that accepts the current status quo and ends all hostilities between our two nations. Will you accept?”
Lincoln, who had been brave enough to come to this meeting all alone, kept his silent, calm stare on Kekkonen for so long that he was certain that peace would not come. Then, surprising everyone around him, he stated with a soft voice..
“I accept.”

After 350 years of constant fighting, the first American war had come to an end.

Finland and America were friends once again. Well, if not friends, at least peaceful neighbours.

1125 B.C.
American troops coming from the north surround Hameenlinna. I finaly get a warrior there. I decide to ask the Americans for peace, as I fear what might happen to Hameenlinna. They accept, neither side has to pay anything. At the same time I construct my sixth city, the city of Porvoo, to the western coast. Now my undivided territories reach from one coast to another.

1025 B.C.

Darn. I knew that someone had to build it, but why my worst enemy, for crying out loud!

1000 B.C.
The first 80 turns are behind me, I think this is where I will take a break. For my utter amazement I’m doing better than I thought.. afterall, I’m still alive :p
SCORE: Finland 225 p, America 224.. doesn't feel like I'm doing better than them.

Well, this is how my nation looks like in the year 1000 B.C.:

http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads7/1000bc.gif

It wasn’t over yet.
Kekkonen might have been friends with Lincoln officially, but unofficially he felt disgusted. The more he thought about Lincoln’s beard, strong chin and strong voice that was also soft in a funny way, he felt disgusted. Partially because Lincoln was such a brave leader, leader of a brave people – hating people is always easier when they are better – or at least as good as – the hater is.
The first round was over. The first American war that had lasted for 350 years had ended in a stalemate: neither side won, altough Finland got what it wanted: it defended it’s sovereignity against an outside oppressor.
“Next time”, Kekkonen muttered to his empty throne room with loads of bitterness in his voice, “next time it won’t be YOU being the aggressors. I still don’t understand why you didn’t use archers in this war but I will make you sorry for not doing so! Just you wait.. just you wait for my wonder to be finished! Hah.. mwhahaha.. MWHAHAHHAHAHAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!

To be continued..

Go Finmaster! Just remember to do things in YOUR OWN time, and I'm sure you'll make it.
Do you plan to destroy the Americans or sue for all their tech? I suppose both might work...

Erik: I was thinking of first suing them for tech after taking out most of their cities and 20 turns later finishing them. I have learned that when diplomatic victory is among the victory conditions, you don't want to leave small nations who hate you alive!
