I can't host or join a multiplayer game.

- I have 1.27
- I have no firewall (I have read and checked (and gone through) the firewall thread twice).
- I turned autosave off
- I reinstalled civ III
- I reinstalled PTW
- I reinstalled the 1.27 patch
- I can't join a game
- I can't host agame

It's annoying, because I can get through the entire process. I can set up a host game. I can see everyone joining. I can then get to the options screen and then launch. It says launching in 10 seconds, then launching in 5 seconds ..then it launches. But then, just as I see my map and units pop up, it blanks out and goes back to the main menu.

If I try to join a multiplayer game, it just times out. I can't understand what's going on. I have the 1.27 patch even though I live in Australia, but as far as I can see - I am using the "US" version of Civ III.

I have Vanilla Civ III and a separate CD called Play the World.

I am on cable, I have a G-Force Graphics card, Running windows 98 on a 1 ghz Celeron and have 256MB RAM and the game plays absolutely fine in single player mode. I have no other problems at all.

It seems that my Civ works 99.999% ..but it just boots me back to the main menu once I have actually set up a hosted (by myself) multiplayer game, or times out if I try to join one.

Also, I can play Civ II Multiplayer just fine and I have Windows personal web server set up on my computer and I have been using this setup for 18 months now and I have never, ever had any problem with "ports" or not being able to use anything else.

I use a lot of different web building software such as FTP and other things such as Voice Chat, mIRC etc.. I never ever have any connection problems with anything - only with Civ.

Can someone tell me what I can do to get it all working? It's driving me nuts.

Do you have a firewall at all? Anything to stop connection to the 'outside world'?
