Difficulty: Emperor, 1:st attempt

Tribe: Random, Celts
Version: C3C, orig.
Victory: Domination in 1615
Score: 6242 (firaxis)

Not too long ago I was awed by those who had mastered regent with their honor still intact. Then the other week I did beat monarch, first a Cultural 20K with Babylon around 1862 AD , and Conquest in the 16th century with Japan. Not great results, but scores where never really an issue. Oh, please mind my English.

So I decided I would try out Emperor. Took a random civ, got Celts. A decent start way down south, a river with mixture of BG, forests and plains. Some mountains and hills. Scouting results in contacts of Spain, Portugal and the Dutch. Got plenty of luxuries. Furs, silks and gems but there are no goody huts around. From nowhere I'm down 6 or 7 techs that very recently no one had available. By now my surroundings are scouted and I've started on a peninsula. I guess that there probably is an expantionist civ on the other side of the continent, which would explain the tech explosion.

What you can't trade, you can take. Spain builds a city on a chokepoint to my not fully settled peninsula, and I decide that would be a good defensive location to own. A crusade against Spain is mounted. I've got Horses but no iron, horesmen it is. Max research towards mathematics, and once completed cities near the target city (Seville) are whipped for catapults. 5 catapults and roughly 10 horsies advances into attack position. Two spears are defending but are defenses are cut short by the catapults. Horsemen moves in unhurt.

Whips some more catapults and spears to defend the stack. Horses are produced back home. I check on the Wonder situation. Dutch have Pyramids. Spain has MoM and are producing TGW. Portugal are producing ToA. I'm way behind in techs. Spain are not interrested in giving up any tech to me so the war continues. My stack therefore advances on a nearby large Spanish city (pop 6).

The turn in between my arrival and my attack Spain completes TGW.
Sigh, city and walls, but my faithful catapults are attacking nicely, horses finishes off. Another city spanish falls which was located on an Iron source. Got a leader from that one too, builds FP. I build two Gallic swordsmen to be able to initiate a golden age if necessary. I consider horses to be a better option, since they can be upgraded to knights, in the very near future.

Spain finally gives up construction when their capital falls. Interrestingly it was defended by four spearmens and an archer. I expected more. So far. all other captured cities are down to 2 or maximum of 3 defenders, with the occasion of a newly produced archer. My stack searches for a new target, Portugal. My cities are producing war material only to fill my war pipeline, and thus I'm low on culture. ToA would help me enourmously. In a few turns half of portugal are in my posession, including the Temple of Artemis. Got two leaders from the battles. Produces two armies.

Meanwhile my curragh meets England, and Babylon (who has built the Lighthouse). Babylon already knows Feudalism and Engineering. England are less educated, but still ahead of me. The Dutch completes TGL in a city 8 turns away from my army. A spear are denying Spain iron. Portugal have four cities now, coastal hills and mountains. Spain have three in a similar conditions, though one have marsh.

As the armies approaches I saw some Swiss merchenaries, and realises that, the knight approach perhaps wasn't that good after all. Fortunately, catapults are the tune the game listens to. TGE are captured and in the same turn rendered obsolete. I'm up to Education in one turn. Unfortunately didn't get the republic or chivalry. Tries to trade some things, but in vain. Portugal and Spain have zero gold. Babylon are already knowing metallurgy, and England are equal to me. The Dutch won't speak to me (very strange).

Starts to research chivalry at max. Meanwhile upgrades catapults to trebuches and spears to pikes. My march on the Dutch continues. An embassy is established in London and Babylon. The Dutch are covering all grounds into England. It is apparent that the TGL city are located very close to an excellent chokepoint into the north part of the continent. A military alliance with England versus the Dutch are in place for some 100 gold. Revolting to Monarchy.

Chokepoint are mine with a loss of four or less horses. Another city falls, and chivalry becomes reality. Spends some time upgrading horses into knights and continously hammer down the Dutch. When most horses are upgraded, set research max towards printing press. Babylon are up to physics or higher by now. Embassy is established with the Zulu to locate where they are.

Trades printing press + gold to England for Gunpowder, and sadly reaslises that there are no salpeter in my territory. (Which spans to 30% of the landmass). England, Babylon, Zulu has one. Trades contacts and meets Ottomans. Researches chemistry and metallurgy and trades astronomy. Researches navigation. Makes peace with the Dutch (alliance is at an end), who are now down to 5 citites, three which are based on tundra. England however continues their war.

Trades map with everyone, get's physics for navigation and gold from Babylon. Sigh, now he got that nice glasses of his, nationalism.

I search the English territory for their salpeter source. It's at tile of a city at the far end of their territory! I declare war on the English, and get an alliance with the Dutch. English cavalry are falling to Swiss mercenaries. While all English forces are concentrating on a border city, some galleons loaded with knights are moving quietly around their territory. Salpeter city is mine. The war continues. England builds Magellans voyage in London. London is captured next turn, only to flip two turns later. I get a total of four flips in less than 10 turns. With that half my army is vanished and I decide to make peace with the English.

Reality check. Ottomans and Babylon are democrasies both knows nationalism and whatever more... Both are quite large somewhere between 15-25%. Zulus are behind in tech. Spain, Portugal and the Dutch are no threat. England is more of a nuicance than a threat. I decide that it's a little bit too quite on the other continent, and I make ottomans and babylon attack the zulus. England and the Dutch continues.

I realise that I need to create a vast army if I'm going to keep either or both my major opponents in check. With that decision I choose to go communism. I research railroads, economics , nationalism and communism. While I create a major workforce to improve all cities in preparation before communism. I'm quite happy I didn't pillage too much. Meanwhile the Zulu's goes extinct and so does Spain. The war rages on, now with England as rogue nation.

I spend some turns whipping temples, libraries, courthouses, marketplaces and banks to get my economy going. It's interresting to see that courhouses actually are making a difference in communism. Essentially before this I had no infrastructure whatsoever.

I trade replaceable parts with babylon, and performs a major drafting round. Upgrades all my cannons and trebuches to artillery.
Declare war on England, and in four turns they are history. (Artillery is too powerful). The Dutch is up next, but they have a MPP with both Ottomans and Babylon. Well, I can do that too. I get a MPP with Babylon and Ottomans, and provoces the Dutch to attack me.
They refuse and therefore I declare them war. With a cascade of that Ottomans declare me war and Babylon declares the Ottomans war. Perfect. What's even more perfect is that Babylon doesn't have any coal!

Four turns later there are no Dutch cities left, and most of my army are due Ottoman kingdom. By now both Babylon and Ottomans had moven through anarchy into fascism, and science hade been standing, more or less, still for atleast 20 turns.

The industrious giant of the celts drafted and produced great numbers of infantry and artillery which were moved, along with a number of settlers, into the ottoman territory. The ottomans who probably had reduced their numbers in the war agains Babylon had no chance. Within 20 turns I had achived a domination victory of 6242 points at 1615 AD.

Keys to victory:
All essential wonders where laid down before the feets of my armies.
Brought along artillery at all times.
Damn lucky MPP with Babylon. Had both declared on me the outcome would probably been a lot different.

Interresting notes:
At the end my "chairdom" was so corrupt that my economy was negative (-50) at 10% luxury and 0% science. This included The Smith trading company. Even though my civ wasn't that tightly managed at the end I think that a communist state should probably be with a commercial civ, and probably a lot smaller than one could expect. The amount of micromanagment necessary also suggest this.

Pyramids and communism is an excellent combination. Quick drafting is very nice, if only to quell resistance or to guard artillery.

I was expecting bigger stacks of troopers. But the most enemy troopers I saw at one time, was at the capital of Babylon (inspection) with 8 Infantry.

Thanks to all people at this site who have posted tips and strategies.

Back to my thesis now, sigh.
