View Full Version : Medals, and multiunit graphics
Neomega Apr 13, 2004, 10:38 PM For the units Id like to see small armies used, which instead of HP bars, would take graphic damage, or lose troops in infantry formation.
I'd also like to see medals awarded for all sorts of feats to list a few:
purple heart: down to one peg, and then revived
Valor: spearman beats a tank, gets medal of valor
bronze star: 5 kills
medal of honor: 10 kills
etc.... :)
Flak Apr 14, 2004, 06:32 AM Intriguing idea. It would be kind of interesting for the more superstitious of us to know which units, for whatever reason, seem to consistently kick butt. I like it.
sealman Apr 14, 2004, 08:51 AM I kind of record my kills now with a little number in the name.
Infantry (15) - this unit has 15 confirmed kills.
Submarine (3) - this unit has 3 confirmed sinkings.
ect.

I like that idea.
I used to name them with the year they were created.
CIVPhilzilla Apr 14, 2004, 06:00 PM And with each medal, do they get something special like extra attack or defense?

I guess some would like it that way, allthough I would be perfectly content with just a cosmopolitan change, so I could view my units, their medals, and get angry when a three-bronze star tank gets taken out.
More like superstition, but also adding a little more uniquness, and therefore more importance, and therefore more drama to every unit.
Jeremiah Apr 14, 2004, 10:31 PM I like the idea of medals. Units should not be just faceless minions.
aaglo May 14, 2004, 03:11 AM I like the medal idea too. But changing the basic stat's would be too good I think. They could be treated in some other way, like:
- An unit with a purple heart could heal twice as fast compared to normal troops.
- An unit with a medal of valor could have 2xChance of creating a leader
- An unit with bronze star would have a boost on their secondary stat (boost to attack on a defending unit, a boost to defence on an attacking unit)
- An unit with medal of honour would have a boost on their primary stat (vise versa the previous "-"). These 'boosts to primary&secondary stats' would then need the units to be flagged to either defence or offence.
Anyway, this is a cool idea not to be ignored :)
warpstorm May 14, 2004, 04:57 AM Great idea NeO.
Gengis Khan May 14, 2004, 05:00 AM Don't like the graphical damage idea, not everyone has the monitor to show such fine detail on such a small swordman.
REALLY like the medals award! As long as they keep it purely for "cool points" and don't change the units at all that get them. It should just be something that is purely cosmetic.

Infantry would lose guys. Vehicles would show damage.
Pirog May 14, 2004, 08:58 AM I like the ideas of medals, but wouldn't like to see those units get any special abilities or something.
That would only lead to people exploiting it to create super units...

Maybe promotions could be included as well as replacements for armies. After several medals.
First promotion: Unit could lead battalion (2 units).
Second promotion: Unit could lead regiment (3 units).
Third promotion: Unit could lead brigade (4 units).
I know that a brigade typically is the same as a regiment, I think it is when a colonel becomes a brigadier general his regiment becomes a brigade. Maybe someone could correct me if I'm wrong on this.
HAND May 15, 2004, 05:23 AM Maybe when a super unit gets KIA, theres a little gravestone or memorial left on the battlefield...if its sea unit a floral memorial could be left at see..
illphil May 15, 2004, 02:32 PM I love the idea of medals, but agree with the others that say it should not change the units stats.
I just think there should be even more types of awards, if they can be thought of. Also if it does not obstruct the view too much have a box in a corner or around the side somewhere that despilays what each unit has+ stats like specific # of kills. I think the info box in bottom right does not currently have enough space to do this idea justice.
I love superstition in games, and i liked how you could track the number of kills a unit had in Starcraft.
Mr. Dictator Mar 24, 2005, 08:05 PM how about HEAVILY decorated units give an extra happiness when stationed in a city, or maybe have each unit have a home base and it makes them happier even when they are gone
Yuri2356 Mar 24, 2005, 08:45 PM how about HEAVILY decorated units give an extra happiness when stationed in a city, or maybe have each unit have a home base and it makes them happier even when they are gone Like how air aces and other heroes were brought home during the World Wars to be used in recruitment and propaganda efforts.
Maybe a decorated unit could draft a citizen without any penalties because they've been 'encouraged to join' rather than conscripted?
Mr. Dictator Mar 24, 2005, 09:08 PM or the parades for famous troops like Alvin York when he returned home would cause automatic WLTKD for a limited amount of turns
Rule Brittania Oct 21, 2006, 02:24 PM and of course depending wat civ your with they should get a diffrent medal like if its a american unit it gets the medal of honour and if it was english then it would get the Victoria Cross and so on
Mewtarthio Oct 22, 2006, 09:20 PM Ack! Necromancers! Begone, foul undead!
...*cough* sorry. Seriously, if you feel like replying to a long-dead topic, it's better to just make a new one (possibly linking to the old one).
Anyway, back to the topic at hand:
...well, actually, this is already included in the game by means of the promotion system... though, granted, the promotion system didn't exist in 2004...
Rule Brittania Oct 23, 2006, 01:18 PM erm sorry at the time a hadn't seen how old it was if i had i wouldn't of bothered
ProfessorK Oct 27, 2006, 12:55 PM REALLY like the medals award! As long as they keep it purely for "cool points" and don't change the units at all that get them. It should just be something that is purely cosmetic
I agree that the idea is great, but that it should be costemic because otherwise you have that added to the normal promotions that units get for experience. Perhaps unit that do something extraordinary (like the spearman taking out a tank) should get one immediate promotion. This could be based on how long the odds were that they beat which the game calculated anyway.
I'm fairly new to the game and I didn't know that you could name units other than naval units....which I always do because it makes the units "come to life for me". I'll have to start doing that when I create them because it would be a blast to track them and their success. Thanks for helping me make the game more than numbers crunching.
