Ok, after being pipped to the post by the depressingly powerful Celts in my first ever attempt at an Emperor game (and my first story which can be viewed here (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=68306)) its time to get payback.

I'm certain I could have won that game, if it wasn't for a few mistakes on my part early on, so I'm going to try again.

Rules are the same as last game, I return to the throne of the Great Spanish Empire, but this time, the game will be played solely in C3C, changing the powerful Spanish from Commercial and Religious, to Seafaring and Religious.

There are little rules, apart from trying to win this round, and if the opportunity comes up to wipe the pathetic Celts off the face of the planet, then it’s all good.

The first game tested a few things. Now I mean business. Republic is a must, keep wars brief, or at least very bloody for the other side, bring Conquistadors into play a lot quicker. Oh yeah, and win this time.

If I don't win, I'm gonna sulk for a few months  and never play as the Spanish again.

Spanish Revenge

Civ: Spain
Enemies: 15 Civ’s (Celts, Chinese, Iroquois and Koreans added intentionally, rest random)
Difficulty: Emperor
World Size: Huge
Land Mass: Large Continents, Wet, Warm, 4 Billion Years
Barbarians: Roaming
Default Rules

(same as last game)

“Madrid shall be founded here!” proclaims Isabella, “the capital will use the land to grow to a huge size, now, advisors, tell me what the countryside is like”….

http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads7/steviejay_4000bc_madrid.JPG

Here’s the known world circa 4000BC, hills to the north, a river flowing east, forests to the north. Set research to writing and I’ll head there at minimum science (due in 50), pulling in 4gpt. On prompted for a heading which Spanish workers should take, Isabella insists that Spain must produce 2 warriors, a settler and then a granary.

3750BC
Spain produces herfirst warrior, he shall head west, along the river in the hope of finding its source.

3550BC
On its travels my warrior comes across a mountain, upon climbing it he gazes upon the cold tundra of the south, definitely not some place where I’d like to place my cities. However it does show a herd of cows just north of the mountain and good grassland, so it is decided that Isabella’s next city will follow the river and settle near Madrid.

3450BC
Madrid produces another warrior. This one however will head away from the river and will instead follow the coast.

3400BC
The first warrior finds the source of the river, a huge mountain. Unfortunately the warrior has not found anything else of interest so it shall head further west in the hope of finding other civilizations.

3200BC
On following another river our first warrior stumbles across another warrior scout from another land, they seem strange to us and they call themselves the KOREANS.

They are cautious of the glorious Spanish Empire, and so they should be. Soon they will fear the very mention of our name. For the time being however they have mastered the secrets of tempering bronze yet are religiously backwards with no concept of worship, they worship no divine being, and have also yet to master the arts of potted jars. The religious Spanish people are appauled at the extent of how backward the Korean people are and insist that we spread the word of our religion to the unbelievers. In a trade of skills we are taught the art of Bronze Working in exhange for showing the Korean people the Divine light of God and also Pottery for which to help their poor civilization grow.

3150BC
The Koreans seem to be working their way westward so my warrior will head north into uncharted territory in the hope of furthering the knowledge of the Spanish Empire.

3100BC
A friendly Jute tribe have gifted to us their best warriors, these fighters will greatly aid the Spanish Empire.

3000BC
Exactly 1000 years since the rise of the great city of Madrid, a settler is formed and given the instruction of settling the land found by the warriors of Spain centuries ago.

IBT- During the course of the years, a wise man has travelled the earth, to places and civilizations so far away that not even rumours of their deeds have found their way to Isabella’s ears. His name is Machiavelli and he has formed a list of the Wealthiest Nations of the World. It greatly pleases Isabella to hear that her people, the “Glorious Spanish”, are the most wealthy of all the people of the world.

The complete list is as follows
Glorious Spanish
Great Russians <----- Yup they’re there >
Fine Chinese
Mediocre Inca
Puny Portuguese
Pathetic Carthaginians
Hopeless Indians
Forgotten Babylonians.

2800BC
In the year of our Lord 2800BC, after 200 years of travelling, (just a leisurely stroll) the settlers sent from Madrid finally reach their destination and the great city of Barcelona is formed.

2670BC
A warrior from Spain comes across a small village deep in the wilderness, far from the reaches of Spain, however, this village know of Isabella’s deeds and they also are aware of her potential and to gain the favour of the Spanish Empire, they gift us 25 gold to help in the prosperity of the Spanish Empire.

2630BC
Unfortunately, for every Jute village that basks in the divine right of the Spanish People, there is a Bulgar tribe which believes themselves superiour to Isabella’s troops and rise up in arms against them.

2550BC
For the past 100 years or so workers of Spain sent from Madrid has been working in secret, working far from the eyes of the citizens of the Spanish capital, its mission has taken many years but finally it is complete. And the labours of their work can now be revealed, animal skins from the forests to the north arrive in the markets of Madrid for trading amongst the people. This luxury greatly pleases both the people of Madrid but also Isabella, who is now seem in and around her palace wearing the finest array of furs from a variety of animals

2510BC
On their travels a warrior scounts come across a rather odd phenomenon, a mountain which spews out the very fires of hell!! This creation of the devil is far enough from the eyes of the humble people of Madrid to avoid a panic and any possible expansion must avoid this place at all costs. This place shall be known as Devil’s Mountain.

2430BC
The great Burgundian tribe comes forth to teach the great warriors of Spain a new art of fighting, they show us that there needs to be a certain code of behaviour when fighting in order to allow for men to become better warriors. The tribe is greatly thanked by the warrior who discovered them and a promise that they will not be forgotten.

Isabella is so pleased with the learning of this that she immediately sends her emissaries to Korea to speak personally to King Wang Kon in order to share this knowledge in exchange for compensation of Spain’s part. Alas, they are still backwards compared to the intelligent Spanish and the Spanish emissaries leave without any form of exchange.

2310BC
In the city of Madrid a great building is constructed, Madrid’s Granary will allow the more prompt dispatching of settlers in order to better colonize the world and spread the word of the Spanish Empire.

Deep in the wilderness, far from the Spanish Empire, Isabella’s own messangers are continuing to preach the joys of the Spanish Empire to any other human beings they may find. These words have fallen favourably on the ears of the chieftain of a Phoenician tribe. They have shown us exactly how we may interpret God’s words through forces of nature, they call it Mysticism and it indeed shall greatly enrich the priests and wise men of Spain.

Isabella is still harbouring the idea of a trade agreement with the Korean people, such a trade now would allow a better friendship to form and also a possible alliance. For the second time in 20 years emissaries are sent to the Korean capital in the hope of a trade and……… oh, they now know the art of tempering iron and the ability to construct larger buildings using material far in advance of even the best palaces in Madrid.

Unfortunately the friendship that Isabella was hoping for is not in the mind of Wang Kon, who insists that Spain must part with a huge sum, all of their reserves (245g and 3gpt) along with their newly discovered knowledge of Mysticism to be taught the workings of Iron, such a price is out of the question for Spain and instead the emissaries return from the Korean capital with the knowledge of Masonry, which was traded for the sum of Mysticism and 45 gold.

IBT-
The warrior which was so generously gifted to us by the Jute people was ambushed whilst it was nearing another friendly village by some unknown barbarians, although outnumbered 2 to 1, the warriors showed their skill in battle by killing off the infidels and as a result, the warrior gains a great deal of experience, going from a conscript to a regular.

2230BC
Following a run of luck which surely has to be a gift from the Gods directly to Isabella, the Jute warrior comes across another village far from civilization. These people are simple but they transport around and farm their land using strange wooden constructions. They are indeed suitably impressed with what the Spanish people stand for that they share this knowledge, and the Great Spanish Empire learn the secrets of “the Wheel”.

The Koreans surely must not know of such devices?? A trade must be bartered.

“Dear Wang Kon, perhaps this strange device will allow you to part with your knowledge of Iron Working??”
“Absolutely not, if you want our secrets then you must give pay handsomely, how about this?”
“My liege!! That is simply unacceptable, that is all of our treasury, we cannot afford such a deal”
“Then our secrets are our own”
“well what will you give for the secrets of the wheel? Surely you must be aware of its potential implications?”
“well……..90 gold?”
“I believe Isabella can accept such a deal, good doing business with you King Wang Kon”

2150BC
With the growing size of Madrid, and the fact that Spanish Warriors are so far from their loved ones proves too much for the great people of Madrid, and they take to the streets in protest. Isabella meets with her wise men to discuss a solution for this. There is much discussion and after great debate there are three solutions.

“My lady, we can do three things, 1. We could train another warrior for defencive purposes and also to quell the rioters, 2. We could take some of the rioters and form them into entertainers or 3. We could raise the luxuries throughout the empire.

Isabella thought about this for a time, “We cannot stop work on our settlers, Spain needs to grow quickly, so we cannot train new warriors and we can’t take the rioters and make them entertainers, they are needed in their workshops building equipment for the settlers, so raise luxuries, just a little, I do not want to be bankrupt.”

“So it shall be done my Queen”

2110BC
Word reaches the people of Barcelona of the plight of the people of Madrid, and they also rise up in protest. Luxuries set to 20%. A road to Barcelona will soon be completed so soon the furs which have been making the people of Madrid happy will soon find their ways into the people of Barcelona’s hands allowing luxuries to fall further.

2070BC
For the first time in hundred of years, our warriors finally find new life other than the irritating barbarian tribes. They speak of themselves as the Sumerians and they are truly a warrior people, their warriors are heavily armed, so much so that our own warriors seem inferiour as a result.

King Gilgamesh seems to be friendly however. Although they seem unable to teach us how to construct their Enkidu warriors they are however knowledgeable in the ways of Iron, and at a much cheaper price than the Koreans, they part with such knowledge. Teaching them the ways of the Wheel and 140 secures the purchase. Not even half of Spain’s gold was needed to learn these new ways.

2070BC
In such a productive year two things have happened. Firstly Madrid has produced another settler, which will be sent north into the forests to secure more furs supplies for Spain. Soon however a settler must be sent far into the West, to secure the only deposit of Iron which is in the land Spain is aware of.

Secondly

cont....

Two warriors from the nation of Egypt come into view of one of my own warriors and a dialogue is struck up. These people are simple by comparison of the cvilizations already known by the Spanish Empire. To better their own people, Spain shall part with the knowledge of Mysticism for all their wealth. The skills of Iron Working and Alphabet will be hidden from the people so that they shall grow slow, the people of Spain do not need a powerful enemy on every front.

A Spanish warrior is able to disperse a barbarian camp far to the north, and amongst the ruins of the simple hunts is a vast sum of plunder. This shall greatly benefit the Spanish Empire.

2030BC
Aware of the huge sacrifices Isabella is making in order to further the Spanish Empire, the greatest builders in all the land form on Isabella’s palace to improve her living conditions.

Alas, this was before the news reach her that a warrior of Spain was slain in battle attempt to rid the world of the Barbarians. More bad news ensures as a warrior enters a small village and inadvertly drinks from the Holy well, such an insult ensures that the men folk of the village rise up against Spain’s warriors.

1910BC
The settlers sent from Madrid finally reach the place they were instructed to, the forests north of Madrid. Here they form another great city, the city of Seville.

1830BC
Another dark day for Spain. Another Spanish Warrior insulted the chief of a small tribe, and as a result the tribe declare war on Spain. Isabella makes a note to instruct her generals to teach their troops some manners.

1790BC
A lone wise man runs into Isabella’s court clutching all manner of things, he is breathless but seems excited.

“My Queen, we have finally mastered it!! The art of writing is now ours!!”
“What does it do?”
“Erm…. It means we can now store our knowledge on all manner of things, and also allows us to set up a perminant base in the capitals of our enemies, this skill was not easy to come by!!”
“Hmm……. So does that mean not many people would know it??”
“erm…….well no I do not think so”
“Interesting……. Ok wiseman, send Emmisaries to all the people that we know, the Koreans, the Sumerians and the Egyptians”
“yeah my Queen, but tell me, what about the Chinese??”
“……….. the who???”

Seems I’ve known these people and didn’t realise it

The Chinese don’t know much, and have no money.

Build Embassies in all the capitals.
Egypt- size 1, guarded by a spearman and a settler, 3spt, on 100% science
Sumeria- size 4, Guarded by 3 Eduka Warriors, 7spt, on 80% science, 20% tax. Oracle in 25 turns
Korea – size 1, Guarded by a spearman, 3spt, 100% science.
China – size 1, Guarded by a spearman, 3spt, 100% science.

http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads7/steviejay_1750bc.JPG

The above pic is a before and after shot of the mini map after I build embassies, as you can see I’m pretty much boxed in. The Egyptians and Sumerians can’t expand west and north respectively because of the Koreans and Chinese so they’ll take my land (as you can see the Sumerians are already doing) The Sumerian city next to my own is scarily close to the iron deposit so I’ll need to build my next city there. This game could get hairy very quickly.

You are in need of more cities. How to do this ?

Tips: start a granary and whip it. After that start pumping settlers like there is no tomorrow.
Improve the lands with workers.
To do this, you should stop producing military, they are nice for scouting and police, but they use up valuable shields.

Build some curraghs. Explore over sea as well.

I've played a bit more without posting it beause I had to split in a hurry after dinner. Unfortunately I've made the same mistake as I did in my last story, sea exploration is somewhat late in coming.

==============
1575BC
After a long time of very little, the city of Toledo is formed in the just west of Seville, all this time, the settler heads west to secure the iron deposit.

1550BC
A warrior in the far north discovers a friendly tribe, which makes a change from the past few times. They know what the Spanish Empire stands for and are quick to share their wealth with Isabella.

1525BC
On its travels north, a warrior comes into contact with another Civilization, they call themselves the Maya and they are indeed mysterious. On building an embassy we learn that their capital is in the far north and is large in comparison to the cities of the south. Size 6, pulling in 8spt and is only 19 turns from building a Great Wonder, the Pyramids. They’re also researching at 80%.

1500BC
the Spanish Settler heading for the Iron deposit to secure it for Isabella stumbles across a settler from the nation of Sumeria, this is bad because they will either, steal it for themselves, or build their cities behind my city, leaving it extremely isolated in time of war.

1450BC
Found the city of Santiago to secure that the iron deposit will not fall into the hands of Spain’s enemies.

1400BC
The world begins to feel just a little crampt in Isabella’s opinion. A Warrior from Spain comes into contact with the Indian people.

1325BC
Deciding that the other nations of the world were not ready to learn the skills of writing from the Spanish hundred of years seems to have been a good deal, as now, the Sumerians are still ignorant to the skills yet have mastered the art of Mathematics and Polytheism and will give Mathematics and all their gold to get their hands on mastering the art of writing.

1300BC
The Sumerian city of Ur completes the Oracle.

1250BC
The Great city of Murcia is formed, bordering with the Sumerian city of Isin. Their expansion must be capped or we shall be overrun!!

http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads7/steviejay_1250bc.JPG

This is the great Spanish Empire circa 1250BC. As you can see the Sumerians seem to be building right into my back yard. I could easily just build east but I want to try and check the Sumerians. I think the Koreans are busy building west because I‘ve not really seen them and the Egyptians are too far north at the moment to offer any problems.

1150BC
Form the city of Valencia north of Santiago.

1125BC
Hmm, this is quite good for me. The Spanish people seem to be well liked by all. Everyone is polite, perhaps they know the power of Spain and choose to be friendly. Isabella sells the art of Writing to the Egyptians for 100 gold.

1100BC
Build the city of Zaragoza, Spanish Wise men are worried that city may flip to the Sumerians so temples will need to be built to guarantee that the Spanish people there stay to the true path

1075BC
Pamplona is formed south west of Barcelona.

IBT- the Mayan capital completes the Pyramids.

steviejay
Apr 16, 2004, 07:28 PM
1050BC
Research Philosophy and………… damn….. no free tech, Isabella is not pleased. To make up for their short comings, Spanish Wise men begin to research a form of currency, which should hopefully bring great wealth to the Spanish Empire

On close consulation with her advisors, Isabella summons forth the Egyptians and arranges a deal where they gain the knowledge of Philosophy by parting with the knowledge of Map Making. 130 gold to Cleopatra personally secures the deal.

Map making is then sold to everyone else, Sumeria for 50 gold and India for 30 gold. To sweeten the deal Spain learns the practise of Polytheism and also gain 50 gold for Philosophy and Map Making.

IBT- Some strange race known as the Portugese complete the Mausoleum of Mausollos. Who are they?? Does that mean there are more people out there??

750BC
Form the city of Vitoria, I really need to start thinking of building up my military, I only have warriors, and the Sumerians are getting very powerful.

670BC
The city of Santander is hastily formed in the tundra to the south of Barcelona to grab 3 supplies of furs before a Sumerian settler can get his hands it it. Isabella would like a world wide monopoly on the fur trade to greatly boost the Spanish treasury later on.

650BC
Begin to settle eastward by building the port town of Asturias, next to Madrid this is my only port so I will need to make it strong to ensure that in the future, Spain shall produce La Grande Armada to rule the waves.

630BC
A Persian city complete The Colossus, who are they???

610BC
The city of Jaen is formed on the Sumerian border at great risk to a cultural flip!! The wise men pleaded with Isabella to rethink, but Isabella was hungry for more land, and her word was law, so the city was formed.

530BC
It has been almost 2000 years since a warrior from Spain first gazed upon the great Devil Mountain, and in that time it has been shunned by the people of Spain….. until now. A group of fearless settlers travelled far and have founded the city of Logrono under the ungodly shadow of the mountain. Prayers are said at temples throughout Spain for God to look down upon the inhabitants of Logrono with a favourable eye and ensure that the people are now swept away in Lucifer’s wrath.

IBT- The Korean capital of Seoul has complete a great building, the Temple of Artemis

510BC
It is a cool day in Madrid, Isabella has just returned from the temple paying homage to God for saving her people from bloodshed for such a long time and is relaxing in her private chamber when her Cultural Advisor requests an audience. Having been friends for so long Isabella isn’t angered at the intrusion and welcomes the advisor in.

“My Queen, we have bad news from our embassy in Ur, the Sumerian capital.”
“What is the matter?? Is war afoot??”
“Thankfully not, but the news is perhaps worse, we have heard that the Sumerians have completed the Hanging Gardens”
“Does this give them a military advantage?”
“No my Queen, however it does shoot the Sumerians ahead in Culture by a huge deal, we need to take extreme measures to ensure that our border towns are not persuaded to leave the warm bosom of Spain”
“Order temples constructed in all the cities. This should increases our culture and hopefully it will please God to the extent where he will shield the people of the cities from the false gods of Sumeria”

490BC
Another port town, this time Valladolid, is constructed in the east. Settler production has slowed to only one or two towns which will hamper Spain’s expansion but the threat from her neighbours are too great to ignore.

470BC
Beijing, the Chinese capital, completes the Great Wall.

430BC
To better understand the way in which great buildings can be made, an emissary is sent to the Indian capital. They are aware of the secrets of construction yet are ignorant of both Philosophy AND Polytheism. Adding in 240 gold secures a trade and in order to spread the wealth, construction is then sold to Koreans for Currency, Codes of Law and 70 gold. The Egyptians will give Spain 130 gold for the secrets of Consturction, Mayans will give more, giving 190 gold for Currency, India offer 320 gold for Currency

So in a single stroke, Construction is obtained for 2 techs and 240 gold. And because of it Spain is now wise of 2 more techs and 410 gold, a profit of 170. All in all this was indeed wise trading on the part of Queen Isabella.

410BC
Palma is constructed north of Valladolid and Cordoba is built to take control of a fresh water lake north of Devil Mountain and Logrono, in the barren plains.

IBT- A Settler of Spain, sent to secure Wine deposits to the north inadvertidly strays into Korean territory, to secure a closer bond of friendship, Spain offers, and Korea accepts, a Right of Passage. Also, The Great Lighthouse is constructed in the Egyptian city of Heliopolis.

steviejay

390BC
The Sumerians come straight up to Isabella, disregarding protocol and demands straight Codes of Law from the Spanish People. The look on the face of Isabella’s military advisor shows her that unfortunately she has no choice, she caves into Sumerian demands and accepts that, in the centuries that will follow, this will not be forgotten.

330BC
In a move which will surely irritate the Egyptians something chronic, the Spanish city of Teruel is formed in the far north, securing all 3 sources of Wine. They will be annoyed because just one square away, is an Egyptian settler. Isabella laughs out loud at this and simply comments that “it was the will of god”.

310BC
News reaches Isabella from afar that a massive force of Barbarians has formed near Valladolid. The state of the Spanish Army is enough for Isabella to fear for her citizens in the far off lands.

210BC
For 230 gold Spain is able to purchase Horseback Riding off of the Indians, propelling her into a new Age of prosperity. To regain some gold the skill is then sold onto the Koreans for 40 gold.

190BC

http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads7/steviejay_190bc.JPG

The advisor who screamed “I TOLD YOU SO”, was quickly beheaded

130BC
The city of Aleria is founded in the hilly land east of Devil Mountain.

IBT-
Smoke Jaguar- “Isabella, grant me 74 gold and I will pray to the great jaguar that he spares the Spanish land from his fangs”

Althought Isabella pretty sure that her God can give the puny Mayan cat a beating of the highest order, she is all too aware that Spain in no position to fight anyone, so reluctantly she buckles. Talking to her advisors she’d still rather give up 74 gold than a tech, so the Sumerians are still top of my list of people Isabella would wish to give a kicking to.

90BC
Finally connect up Iron to the city of Santiago, now I just need to get a road to Madrid….

90AD

With a Spearman factory at Toledo and a Catapult Factory at Barcelona Isabella decides its time to start thinking offensively. Unfortunately heading west is out of the question. The Sumerians are the pimp daddy at the moment so any attack on them would be futile. That leaves north….

http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads7/steviejay_90ad.JPG

This is the Spanish northern border, there’s still a lot of space to be filled, but not by Spain. We shall let the AI build there and take the cities later. The nearest neighbour is the Egyptians, who are on the same score as Spain, and the Spanish Army is “average” in comparison so a long drawn out war isn’t the best idea.

Isabella sends for her Military Advisor, General Estavan Jae (get it?? No? oh well) and demands that he forms a plan for the invasion of Egypt using all of Spain’s military might whilst safe guarding against a possible strike from Sumeria. General Jae leaves and for several days consults his staff and the various maps made of the north. After much debate, a map is drawn up and shown to Queen Isabella and the rest of her advisors.

http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads7/steviejay_90ad.JPG

This is an altered map of the northern area. To the far right, circled with the green ring, is the Egyptian city of Lisht, “probably” lightly defended but frankly I’m not pinning my hopes on it. To the east of Lisht are Chinese and German cities and to the west is an ocean, a bottleneck to be more precise.

http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads7/steviejay_firstattack1.JPG

Unless the Egyptians are planning on marching a huge army through Chinese territory, which Mao would just “love”, that means to get south, any army needs to get through Lisht, so if an army controls Lisht then they shall control the battle, in theory. Four or five spearmen, along with as many catapults as can spare should hold back any attacking force, the only thing going for the troops of Spain is the enemies inability to attack whilst redlined. Spanish wise men are bordering on Medieval Infantry here but so are the enemy so in order to counter this, Spainish workers must construct a huge number of catapults or, ideally, Trebuchets.

http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads7/steviejay_firstattack2.JPG

This is the western side of the lake. The two circled cities will fall easily, they can’t be redefended fast enough to stop whatever I throw at them, which will probably be quite a few Swordsmen. The idea will be to take out the cities of Buto and Edfu and rush forward towards Pi-Ramesses., the square just north of Pi-Ramesses is easily defendable. The problem is getting units there, Catapults don’t like mountains very much. If Spanish defensive units are not fast enough the Egyptians will pour though this side like water down a drain. The city of Pi-Ramesses is a stop off point. Push forward and consolidate a position there, then advance along to the two Egyptian cities of Hieraconpolis and Heliopolis. The solid green area is a mountain range which should offer protection against Egyptian troops. Capture these cities and sue for peace. On a side not the red box is a spearman/settler combo, they will obviously build a city somewhere, however where that is exactly is still unknown to Spanish generals.

Now, a plan has been given to Isabella, now all that is needed is the troops. Currently there are 14 warriors, 17 spearmen and 7 catapults guarding the Spanish Empire, more or less all of these troops are on the Sumerian border. The catapults are the key here, as long as there are around 2 catapults to every attacker then the attacking units should be able to able to fight their way to their objectives.

IBT- News reaches the court of Isabella that a people known as the Russians have been destroyed. Isabella is unsure how to react to such news as she was not even aware of the Russians existence. She dismisses the news and life goes on.

Subnote- WOOOOOO No more Russians!!! Good, saves me having to kill them!!!! Now just the Celts to finish off and I can rest peacefully.

150AD
The Egyptians have built the city of Pithom just west of the two oasis north of Cordoba. This shouldn’t be a problem, just need to move faster to get to the objectives.

To quicken my ability to get catapults to the place they need to be, a number of workers will follow the main force and construct roads to hasten the arrival of reinforcements.

IBT- In order to connect up Spain’s iron supply a number of workers were forced to stay into Sumerian territory. Needless to say the Sumerian emissary to Spain was quite vocal about how units trespassing wouldn’t be tolerated. But its at this point where Isabella showed her crafty side, she offered Sumeria a Right of Passage, which, for 80 gold, was accepted. This now ensures that the Sumerian people are friendly and polite towards Spain, securing her western border so troops can be moved to the north.

170AD
Madrid is set to produce warriors in great numbers. With Madrid’s huge production, she is able to train and field a unit of warriors a turn. These units will not be sent to the front just yet, as they will be formed into swordsmen once a steady supply of iron is established.

190AD
A permanent trade route to the iron deposit is formed, somewhat faster than expected. 5 warriors are taught in the art of swordsmanship immediately,

260AD
Rumours reach the Spanish Empire that a Byzantine city has completed the Statue of Zeus.

290AD
Travellers from far away land bring news that the Mayans have completed the Great Library. Although saddened that this is a great wonder which Spain could have went for themselves, Isabella is all to pleased that Sumeria didn’t win the race to build such a Wonder, as this would have made their culture almost unbearable to the border cities of Spain

340AD
After a great amount of time and effort on the part of the Spanish people, a large army is assembled in and around the Spanish city of Cordoba. 16 Catapults, 7 Spearmen and 12 Swordsman it is surely the largest army Isabella has yet formed and even more units arrive each turn. Now comes the moment of truth, Isabella has instructed that the plan be followed exactly, which dictates that the force must be split in two, with a large holding force being sent to Lisht. This is very dangerous. If General Estavan Jae has miscalculated the enemy then they shall throw everything they have down the Pi-Ramesses straight at the main attacking force, totally diverting past the huge catapult force stationed in Lisht.

http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads7/steviejay_340ad.JPG

Lisht is defended by 2 spearmen and a swordsman, all regular. Taking the city sould not be a problem.

http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads7/steviejay_340ad2.JPG

This city should also not be a problem, however, Spain’s military advisor brings particular attention to the unit which looks different from the others, a pikeman.

5 Spearmen, 4 Swordsmen and 10 catapults will be sent to capture Lisht while everything else (including all reinforcements) are sent to capture Pi-Ramesses and the surrounding cities.

370AD
A Right of Passage is agreed upon with the Mayan to ensure that the catapults heading for Lisht may travel through the mountain pass without trespassing.

390AD
Whilst moving troops into position for the final attack against Egypt, news reaches the Spanish generals of considerable Mayan troop movement. At least ten units are heading south through the Pi-Ramesses. Isabella spends several nights with her wise men pondering where they may be going?? They are not at war with anyone that Spain is aware of. Only time will tell.

410AD
The Sumerians cancel their Right of Passage with Spain. Isabella is disappointed but she lets the deal disappear into history.

It is also in this year that there is a landmark in the history of the Spanish Empire. The wise men of Spain finally research a new form of government, the Republic, and a revolution is ordered immediately. As Spain decends into Anarchy, cities shake as the crowds gather to loot and plunder. During this time Isabella stays secure in her palace, defended by her Royal Guard.

IBT- During this dangerous time, the Chinese offer Literature to the Spanish people for 300 gold. Libraries would indeed be very useful for the Spain, however at this point she is on a war footing, so China is politely refused.

420AD
With a new year, there is a new government, Isabella proclaims herself head of the Spanish people (again) and life continues….. or does it?? Because of the huge army Spain is now supporting, it puts a huge strain on the Spanish treasury, at 70% tax she is loosing 76gpt!!! If this war doesn’t start soon then Spain will be ruined!! Marketplaces are ordered in the major cities and Egypt is sent a demand for technology. She is not expected to agree to the demand, but in the future people will look upon this moment as the time when war could have been avoided if Egypt co-operated with Spain.

http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads7/steviejay_420ad_war.JPG

War is upon us. May God favour the bold, and not listen to the infidels prayers of help.

IBT- In other news, another mystery is solved, as the Mayans declare war on the Sumerians. This will work extremely well in Spain’s favour. As the Sumerians send troops north to punish the Mayans it shall block off any Egyptian counter attacks.

Due to stupidity on the part of Spanish generals, the Egyptians a re able to steal 3 of Spain’s workers. These must be retaken as soon as possible.

430AD
With war declared the Spanish General given the task of taking and holding Lisht moves his troops towards the objective, scouts from the force shows a warrior and 3 archers in close proximity, which may try to reinforce Lisht, with so many Spanish defensive troops the soliders would much rather prefer to take these units on out in open field, rather than try to get past them in the city.

On the plus side, news which results in a large cheer throughout the Spanish Empire, the 3 worker units of Spain captured by the Egyptians were liberated by a spearman unit released from the main stack attacking Pithom. Whilst the liberation was going on Spanish units marched on both Pithom, and a smaller force on Edfu, catapult bombardment will commence next turn

IBT- The might of Sumeria is shown as she begins to move a huge number of units towards her forward cities to defend against the Mayan. On the Egyptian front the forces at Pithom and Edfe are not harassed at all, raising questions as to where the Egyptians were. At Lisht, the stack was able to repulse an attack by a Medieval Infantry, thanks mainly to the catapults present.

440AD
At Pithom, the real attack begins, with ten catapults the Spanish forces are able to severely weaken a pikeman unit, a spearman unit and a Medieval Infantry stationed in the city. With the defenders heavily dazed by the initial bombardment, Spanish Swordsmen run forward with cries of “For Isabella” and “For the Empire” and, without any loss of life, was able to wipe out the remaining defenders of the city, capturing an Egyptian worker.

http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads7/steviejay_pithom.JPG

Unfortunately the defenders of Edfu, still at full strength because of the lack of initial bombardment, fare better against Spanish steel, killing one brave Spanish warrior, however this sorrow was masked by the triumph felt by the other swordsmen as they engaged the enemy and avenged their fallen brothers by capturing Edfu, and adding 2 Egyptian slaves units to the Spanish Empire.

With the successes of the Spanish troops at Pithom and Edfu unbeknown to the troops on the other side of the lake, they begin their bombardment of Lisht, however due to an unfavourable wind coming from the direction of Devil’s Mountain, the catapults are largely unsuccessful, forcing the Spanish troops to engage the energy at close to full strength. The futileness of this is shown in the first melee as a swordsman falls almost immediately to an equal Eqyptian unit, the force at Lisht has been largely underestimated. The bombardment has shown that there are more defenders in Lisht than there is attackers in the force outside wishing to take the city. The generals sit and ponder over the big question, “Do we wait for reinforcements, or wait till next turn and hope for a favourable bombard rate?” A runner made its way to the other side of the lake and explained the plight of the forces at Lisht and as a result reinforcements have been dispatched at all due haste, but they shall not arrive for some time across the open country. With that in mind the generals of the forces around Lisht order that the troops there dig in, a siege has begun.

IBT- The Maya/Sumerian war seems to be going badly for the Mayans according to Isabella’s spies. The Mayan’s insist on attacking with inferior warrior and Javelin thrower units whilst the Sumerians counter attack with knights.

At Lisht the units which are now fortifying themselves in for a long stay, watch helplessly as 3 Archers, 2 Swordsmen and 2 warriors pass through the city on their way to Pithom. The plan was good, just insufficient rescources were allocated.

450AD
After a much more successful bombardment of Lisht the 3 remaining Spanish Swordsmen rush forward and engage the enemy, for no losses they are able to kill a spearman, a swordsman and a warrior. With no swordsmen left the attack slows down but the troopers at the forward units scream at the generals demanding that the attack continue, with only a weakened spearman in sight the battle can be won this year! After much pondering, and taking into consideration the consequences to the Spanish Empire if more Egyptian units are left to pour through Lisht, the General in command dispatches orders to a spearman…. Attack at all costs. The spearmen are apprehensive of attacking, as they have only been trained in defensive warfare, they charge the defender and are almost defeated themselves however God was looking down upon the battlefield and knew the Spanish cause was good and just and…..

http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads7/steviejay_lisht.JPG

Five more Egyptian workers become slaves to Isabella. The balance of power just went Isabella’s way.

With the capture of Lisht we find that there is but a single road through the mountains, so any unit which wishes to attack Lisht will (probably) follow that road, when the catapults can be brought into play next turn, it should be almost impregnable. The main problem is the units which left Lisht last turn, as they may try to retake the city.

On the other front, things are going a lot slower. With so many Mayan troops coming down from up north, and also with only one road going through the whole mountain range to Pi-Ramesses, Spanish catapults are finding it hard to get to their objectives. The Spanish generals wait and hope that these Mayan units will move next turn to allow the advance to continue.

IBT- Our embassy in Beijing has finally found news of interest to Isabella. The Chinese has formed an alliance with the Mayan against the Sumerians. This makes it very interesting, although China are even weaker than the forces in play in Egypt, its still two against one. It shall be something worth keeping an eye on to see how the war there progresses. Yet more Mayan units are pouring south, this is presenting a logistical problem Spain hadn’t envisioned. Messangers bring good news from Lisht, although there was a large counter attack, the units were able to hold off 2 archers and a warrior for no loss however an Egyptian swordsman was able to kill a Spanish Spearman, which is unfortunate. News reaches Isabella that the Sumerians have completed the Sistine Chapel.

460AD
With a new year and the catapults being reloaded, they are able to move into the town of Lisht, finally completing their objective, albeit several years too late.

In order to take control of the road coming down the mountain range at Pithom, a spearman unit will be forever on guard duty there.

http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads7/steviejay_mountain.JPG

this map from the front shows exactly the problem facing Spanish troops, however it does mean that there is no chance of an Egyptian counter attack through here, so Lisht might be required to be reinforced further.

IBT-Egyptians loose 2 archers and a warrior for the loss of a lone spearman at Lisht. There seems to be a lot of troop movements in the mountains surrounding the city.

470AD
Troop movement, not battles of any kind.

IBT- Egypt and Sumeria sign an alliance against Maya!! This is exactly what Isabella was dreaming of. A war on two fronts.
Damn, Logrono flips over to Sumeria.
The Egyptians move units towards Lisht, now its time to test the defenders of the city!

480AD
Kill 2 Swordsmen at Lisht and capture 5 more Egyptian slaves. Move more troops towards Pi-Ramesses

IBT- A lot of troop movement on the Mayan’s part.

490AD
Bombard Pi-Ramesses and rush in with swordsmen, kill a Pikeman and a Swordsman, leaving only a redlined Medievil Infantry however the only other unit which can attack this turn is a spearman, and it losses against the superiour weaponry of the Egyptians.

IBT- Seoul complets Sun Tzu’s Art of War. The Mayans are really moving troops down now, ts getting a bit more interesting, however Isabella’s wise men say that, although there are a lot of troops on the front, they are no match for the iron swords and armour of the Sumerians

500AD
With the turn of the new century, another objective is met by the Spanish War Machine. After a brief bombardment, Spanish Swords clashed with Egyptian pikes and swords in a great battle but in the end, Glorious Spain proved triumphant, capturing the city of Pi-Ramesses.

IBT- The Mayan “massacre” continues as countless Mayan soldiers die needlessly at the hands of the Sumerians.

510AD
Move troops towards the forward cities of Pi-Ramesses and Lisht, treasury is running dangerously low……

IBT- More troops move south from Mayan lands up north, and get wiped out by the Sumerians

520AD
Isabella is worried, normally her daily briefings involve only her generals and military advisor, but today is different, today all of her most trusted advisors are in attendance. There is a hush as the Domestic Advisor takes the floor. “Ladies and Gentlemen, Honourable Queen, I regret to inform you all, that the Spanish Empire is bankrupt. The strain on our economy to support our great armies is too much. I expect we only have ten years before we have to begin decommishing units to…..
“IMPOSSIBLE!!”, screams the military advisor, “do you really intend to weaken the units defending the Empire from the Infidels to the north!!??”
“The funds must come from somewhere, either that or we must return to a Despotism”
There is a hush, and eyes turn to Isabella. She is deep in thought at the troubling words she has heard, clearing her throat she speaks, “how long can we survive in Republic?”
“Ten years at present, perhaps more if we are able to sell Spanish Wares to the other nations”
“then let it be so, we shall stay a Republic until we cannot sustain it no longer. Foreign Advisor, see who is willing to trade. Your Queen has spoken, so let it be. Now, tell me about the war……”

And so it was. Emissaries arrive in all the capitals of all the known world searching for buying for Spanish goods. Thankfully the Indians do not yet know of The Republic and will trade 100 gold and Literature for the pleasure. This gold will add another 20 years to the life of the Spanish Republic. The emissaries from the capital cities of Maya and China return with nothing to show however the representatives in Korea fare better. The Koreans are unaware of the secrets of the Republic however they are aware of Monarchy, a government which would truly make Isabella a Queen, and they also are unaware of Literature, this information is important, but at present Monarchy is more important and a straight trade for The Republic is secured. Once news reaches Madrid and Isabella of such a government, another revolution is ordered (again). The “Queendom of Spain” will vanquish all its enemies.

On the war front, with Pi-Ramesses taken, a small force is detached to take the Egyptian city of Buto, the last city on the Spanish side of the Great Lake.

With Monarchy now within sight, the proposed end to the war has now been dismissed as unnecessary and the troops shall push on. As a result Isabella has demanded that, as soon as Buto falls, the main force in Pi-Ramesses shall press forward towards the cities of Hieraconpolis and Heliopolis. Fulfilling the primary objectives set almost 400 years ago. Also, at Lisht, with Egyptian troop movements light, a huge force of 3 Spearmen, 8 swordsmen and 11 catapults is sent to try to capture the Great Egyptian city of Elephantine, this city will be a great starting point for the Second Egyptian war, which is already in development.

IBT- The Sumerians take time out from beating the Mayans about to send an emissary to Madrid. Here they offer Madrid friendship, in exchange for Spain to renounce her ties to the Mayan and declare war. This alliance would guarantee Spain’s safety in the west, however Spain has a Right of Passage deal with the Maya and breaking t would severely damage Spain’s word of honor so because of this, Spain must decline…… for the time being.

530AD
Isabella orders the checking of the official records and when her royal clerk returned with the treaty, it shows and it roughly translates to four turns left until expiry. When that happens, Isabella muses, then we shall see what the Sumerians have to offer.

With the loss of two Spanish swordsmen, the city of Buto is finally captured, the Egyptians have been pushed back to their side of the Great Lake.

IBT- Sumerians capture the Mayan city of Tulum. Spanish units see no more troops coming down from the north, and even see some Mayan units retreat.

540AD
An Army of 11 catapults, 7 swordsmen and 1 spearman reach the walls of Heliopolis. Such a large city will take some effort to crack, but when it does it shall be glorious, because even outside the city, a great beacon of light at the objective, the Great Lighthouse

At Elephantine, 7 swordsman and 3 spearman reach the outskirts of the city, unfortunately the 12 catapults sent to aid the assault will arrive later than expected due to the wheeled units inability to cross great mountains

IBT- Spain looses a swordsman and a spearman from Egyptian counter attacks.

550AD
The battle for Heilopolis begins with a lengthy 11 catapult bombardment. Kill 1 pikeman, then a spearman….and another…….a midevil infantry…… and a pikeman…….. YES

http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads7/steviejay_550ad.JPG

Unfortunately there’s a Midevil Infantry stationed in the mountains around the city.

IBT- The Egyptian Med Inf is fought off however another arrives on the mountain range. The plus side is that now the catapults can now be used to defend the city.

560AD
On the other front, the catapults are finally within range of the Egyptian city of Elephantine. Although the attackers are wearly and worn from constant Egyptian attacks…..

http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads7/steviejay_elephantine.JPG

With the capture of Elephantine, Isabella informs her advisors that she wishes peace. Her troops are worn down and drawn out and the Egyptians are beginning to throw hurtful blows.

Isabella and Cleopatra meet on a Spanish Galley in the middle of the Great Lake, a neutral venue which was easily agreed upon. Cleopatra seems eager to end the war and will even offer Engineering….. for a price, 177gold that is. A handshake ends it. The Egyptian War of 420-560AD was a bloody one, however, Isabella knows, and maybe even Cleopatra knows as well, that the Egyptian War would not be the last….

With the newly acquired art of Engineering, India are more open to a trade. They are not aware of such skills and also are unaware of the government type Monarchy. Teaching the Spanish people Feudalism secures Engineering and Monarchy for India. This now guarantee’s that the next Egyptian war will be fought with Medieval Infantry, Pike men, and Trebuchets.

Summary of Egyptian War

http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads7/steviejay_560ad.JPG

From the very start I knew that there would be a huge amount of fighting on the left side of the Great Lake. However I was hugely surprised at the lack of resistance after taking the city of Lisht, I was almost certain Egyptians would pour down there, I was even hoping for a degree of leader fishing, but unfortunately not. As you can see it got to the point where I had units in Lisht doing nothing where there was a nice big juicy target just within reach.

Taking the cities were easy. With the catapults even pike men didn’t hold up to even regular swordsmen. My main problem was projection of force. If I had left Lisht alone then I could have had all my troops to taking the left side of the lake, maybe even moving on Thebes, but obviously I wasn’t aware that the Egyptian army wasn’t willing to engage me in full battle and it wasn’t a risk I was willing to take. Another problem was just plain logistics. The mountainous range made moving catapults without roads impossible and the stream of Mayan troops hogged the roads and it took a lot longer than I had wished to take Pi-Ramesses. Also, the flipping of Logrono cut my supply line so reinforcements took 4 or 5 turns longer than they should have, even if they reached the front lines at all.

The Republic was also a disaster for me. I went from about 50gpt in Despotism, to -80gpt in Republic, which wasted all my treasury and in the end, forced me to change to Monarchy. What was worse was, despite me having 2 luxuries, furs and wine, the people were always unhappy and at -80gpt odd I couldn’t raise the luxury slider so for the reign in Republic, a lot of cities were in disorder. Definitely not the best way to try and win my first Emperor game. I shall need to wait for quite some time in order to gain the funds to upgrade my armies to Med Inf and Treb’s but when they do I’m hoping for a decisive thrust, following the catapults from city to city. All put one of the cities can be taken without taking the time out to build roads. Any attack will probably be launched from Heilopolis. But that’s in the future, right now, its time to build libraries and market places.

IBT- The Sumerians are moving a huge amount of troops across Spanish land, normally such a threat would result in a stern faced Isabella telling the country in question where they can put their troops but frankly, if they declare war, the Spanish Empire will cease to exist.

570AD
This year is a year for consolidating the new territories added to the Spanish Empire, defensive troops are moved into their positions whilst the offensive troops relax after years of fighting. Isabella has plans for her swordsmen though, the veterans of the Egyptian war will be rushed to the nearest city with a barracks for retraining in the art of Medieval warfare, where they will be given better swords and armour for which to crush Spain’s enemies. However this costs money and the long war took a lot out of Spain so this may take longer than wished.

IBT- The Mayans appear before Isabella and request that the Right of Passage between the two great nations be renewed. However Isabella knows that this will offer no gains, and, with the Sumerian deligation in the next room, would not be prudent, so the Mayan Emissary is dismissed down hearted.

580AD
With the current budget, Spain is able to upgrade one swordsman to Med Inf each turn. IT shall take time, but soon Spain’s army will be even more of a force to recon with.

IBT- In the post-war years the world has calmed down somewhat, The Sumerians are still looking to wipe the Mayans out, but the Mayans are no longer sending unit after unit down from up north

590AD
Spanish workers are put into overdrive to bring the countryside up to its peak level, all grassland must be mined and all plains and desert must be irrigated as soon as possible so that the Spanish War Machine can be upgraded faster.

Isabella, looking at a map of the known world makes a poignant statement………. “there is an awful lot of black out there”

Now begins the dark years of the Spanish Empire, and for the known world as a whole. From this time until 650 AD there was little in the way of noticeable diplomatic encounters, no wars, nothing, just rebuilding and upgrading for the Spanish people. In 620AD The Sumerians and Indians sign an alliance against the Mayans but this did not trouble Isabella or the Spanish people.

650AD
A Galley of the finest sailors in all of Spain is produced at Madrid harbour, its mission is to find new life.

Also worth noting is that the Indians, Mayan and Chinese don’t have any iron. And the Egyptian supply is within reach of the Spanish army should the urge take Isabella.

IBT- Zaragoza flips over to Sumeria. The Culture of Sumeria is crushing Spain.

670AD
India and Sumeria sign an alliance against China. This now means that India is at war with the two civ’s which sandwich her on the map. Isabella’s advisors severely doubt India can survive such a crushing war.

700AD
Sumeria ropes in the Koreans against the Chinese and the Mayan, its turning into a North Vs South battle, the only good thing is, Spain is being left along to rebuild her military

720AD
“My Lady, we have made contact…..”

http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads7/steviejay_720ad.JPG

Who they are?” Isabella enquires, “can they solve Spanish money troubles?”
“<sigh>, I am afraid not ma’am, they are the Inca and they do not even yet know Codes of Law”
“Are you telling me we risked the lives of those brave sailors to meet a race who’s mentally inept??”
“Yes my Queen”
“Doh’”

IBT- Renew Spain’s Right of Passge with Korea. Wang Kon looks different somehow….

authors note- I’m starting to fall way behind in tech

Maya and India sign a peace treaty.

730AD
In order to better get troops to the front, and also to repair the supply line destroyed by the flipping of the fools in Zaragozza, Isabella demands that a Right of Passage is signed with the mighty Sumerians. Isabella has sat about too long whilst the Egyptians live happily to the north. They must be destroyed, she wants war!!

IBT- The Koreans request the audience of Queen Isabella and offer an alliance against the Chinese. Unfortuantely this is rejected, Spain does not wish a war on two fronts. As the Korean deligates leave, an Egyptian slinks into the Palace. He has been sent personally by Cleo and was wondering whether or not Spain would like to join in an alliance with the Egyptians against the Chinese. With a short chuckle he is also shown the door.

Its now when tragic news reaches Isabella. Heliopolis has deposed the Spanish Governor and return to Egypt. 2 Spearmen were lost. War is now upon us, or it will be

740AD
“2 turns remain on our peace treaty with Egypt my Lady. After that we may declare war again honourably”
“Estavan Jae, tell me about our Armed Forces?”
“My lady, the picture is this,”

http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads7/steviejay_740ad1.JPG

“With those units we are more than capable of taking the cities we want, the main problem will be holding onto them. There is a lacking of defensive units at the front, Army Group West has none at all after the rioting that ensured during the flipping of Heliopolis and all of Army Group West’s defensive units are in Elephantine”
“Can we wage war now and win”
“Erm….. ma’am, we can wage war this very second, and we can deal a huge blow to the Egyptians, however their counter attack may take our cities back off of us”
“Two turns until we can declare war again??”
”Yes my Queen”
“Find a solution before then”

750AD
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads7/steviejay_750ad.JPG

“My Queen, this will be the proposed attack. Army Group East will begin the battle with the capturing of Avaris, if possible a light garrison will be stationed there to defend against recapturing. Then the majority of Army Group East will begin a long march towards the Egyptian capital. By the time Army Group East (AGE) reaches Thebes, Army Group West (AGW) will have captured the two cities of Hieraconpolis and Heliopolis. If needed AGW will then march on Thebes to support AGE, if not, then AGE will continue north to the city of Memphis. AGW’s final objective after Thebes will be the city of Asyut. However, this attack depends entirely on being able to get defensive units to the front as quickly as possible and also China holding down as many Egyptian troops as possible. With the lack of Horsemen and the use of Catapults, speed is not possible, it will be a solid, slow advance, city hopping if you will. Even the slightest delay will result in severe casualties.” Estavan Jae pauses for effect before continuing, “…..as you can see, the captured cities are marked with black crosses, this is because I believe if we cannot get the defensive units to the front….. we may be required to burn the cities we cannot hold to the ground to ensure that the offensive may continue, and deny them their use by the enemy”.
Isabella seems alarmed at the prospect, “Razing the cities?? Killing the civilians? Surely there would be retaliation from the other nations
“Not so my Queen, but one thing we would need to do would be to rush our own citizens to the scene to found cities on the newly aquired land before anyone else does, primarily the Sumerians”
“What are our objectives for this war??”
“Domination of the Great Lake”

Isabella informs her closest advisors, “War will be decled in 40 years, Your Queen has spoke”. Messangers were dispatched from Madrid immediately to Army Group West and East to change to a war footing, and expect reinforcements in the coming years. By 800 AGE and AGW will have enough supplies to complete their objectives.

770AD
Pikemen from all corners of the Spanish Empire rush forward to join AGE and AGW.

IBT- The Chinese offer an alliance against the Koreans, which is politely declined by Isabella, Spain needs allies, not more enemies.

780AD

Hmm, is that a city??? Doubt it could be very big, with it being in the shadow of the capital, might be worth a look.

20 years to do, more troops arrive at their staging areas.

IBT- Sumerians begin work on JS Bach. My god, if they get that…….. cultural win, without a doubt.

Spanish galleys provide more information of the world around us as they bring news of another people, the Celts.

Authors note- there they are, the evil Celts. Pretty far away, also for pure irony sake, the Celts own the Russian city of Moscow, its entirely possible that when I found out the Russians were destroyed, it was the Celts that did it

800AD
In order to hopefully trade with the Incans, the Spanish people gift to them all the technology they need to progress to the next Age. With luck they shall study the technology that Spain does not have and a trade agreement can be sought.

With the coming of the year of our lord 800AD, Isabella undertakes a secret tour of the troops at Elephantine. In the years since the plan for the Second Egyptian War was set, both Army Groups have grown considerably.
Army Group West now consists of 11 catapults, 4 Medievil Infantry, 3 Spearman and 8 swordsmen. 26 units
Army Group East is build up of 9 catapults, 5 Midevil Infantry, 1 pike man, 1 swordsman and 6 Trebuchets. 22 units.
With such a large force it is still unknown whether or not the razing of Egyptian cities will be necessary and the subject is extremely sensitive and is rarely talked about.

A deligation is sent to Cleopatra personally. Their demand is simple, teach us the secrets of Invention or die in honourable battle. They refuse, and war is again declared.

IBT- No Egyptian retaliation for the declaration of war. Both Army Groups at 100%

810AD
With no Egyptian resistance, Isabella gives the orders for her armies to advance. AGE will begin offensive operations against Avaris next turn, whilst AGW must wait before it can enter range of its objective.

IBT- AGE defeats an attack by an Egyptian Longbowman and a Knight tries to flank the Army.

820AD
For no losses, AGE is able to capture Avaris after a brief but successful bombardment.

After inspection of Avaris, Spanish Engineers are about to make an interesting discovery, the Egyptians are in control of the Great Wall of…… well Egypt. Taking Egyptian cities has just been made just that little bit harder

IBT- the only action from the Egyptians was the lone Medieval Infantry outside Avaris. Unfortunately a regular Med Inf’s defence isn’t a match for the attacking force of a veteran Med Inf.

830AD
On its travels a Spanish Galley comes into contact with another people, the Byzantine and their Queen, Theodora.

After a completely unsuccessful catapult bombardment, which resulted in no damage to the defenders of the city, Spanish troops charge the pike men of Heliopolis. With the loss of 2 Med Inf the Spanish attackers are able to kill 3 Pike men and a Longbowman to recapture the city and regain control of the Great Lighthouse. With the capture of the city, the Spanish troops are able to hear rumours about a Egyptian Knight unit is just outside the city walls, and is promptly attacked with Spanish swordsmen.

IBT- NO Egyptian counter attack. Hmm, wonder where they all are?

840AD
Make contact with another civilization, the Portugese.

Move the healthy troops of AGW onto the next objective, Hieraconpolis. When this city can be captured, the Egyptian iron supply can be cut, severely weakening their ability to project force.

IBT- The Sumerians have once more requested an audience with Isabella and her advisors. This time, they are greated more warmly. They only ask for one thing…… an alliance against the Mayan………. This time, Isabella agrees. SPAIN DECLARES WAR ON MAYA!!

On the Egyptian front, there is a great deal more resistance, loosing 2 spearmen to Egyptian Longbow men.

850AD
Using catapults meant for the attack on Hieraconpolis, an Egyptian stack of 3 Longbow men, 1 Med Inf and 1 spearmen, it is hoped that these units will withdraw and the attack on the city can proceed.

IBT- Maya and Korea sign a peace treaty. 2 swordsmen are lost for the loss of 1 Longbow men.

860AD
After the loss of 2 swordsmen and 1 Med Inf, the city of Hieraconpolis, 2 Pike men, 1 spearman, 1 Longbow man and 1 Med Inf loosing their lives fighting for the city.

“Tell me news from the front!”
“Well my Queen, Army Group West has captured the city of Hieraconpolis, its second objective, the Egyptian capital and her only iron supply are now within range of our troops. Army Group East’s advances are slower. They are bogged down at their first objective, trying to hold what they have gained, it may be…. Somewhat difficult for AGE to march on Thebes to aid the attack there. I recommend we ……. I’m sorry, you, send the remaining troops east, towards the Egyptian port town of Abydos.”
“And Egyptian resistance”
“It is growing, our forward troops fear as many as ten units are already heading south from Chinese land to help defend their homeland.”
“And what of China?”
“The Sumerians are just too powerful for them, I fear the nation will fall in approximately 30 or 40 years”
“Can our armies survive against the full force of Egypt ‘s army?”
“We don’t know, without defensive reinforcements….. we shall need to get back to you on that”

IBT-an Egyptian longbow man is defeated against the defenders of Heliopolis. Everything else is quiet and calm.

870AD
Move the remaining troops of AGE towards Abydos, 4 Med Inf and 13 Trebuchets (upgraded catapults thanks to the barracks captured intact in Avaris. The injured troops of AGW are withdrawn to the relative safety of Heliopolis whilst attempts are made to bombard the road to the Egyptian iron deposit but unfortunately these are unsuccessful and with no captured barracks in any of these cities (the nearest barracks are 10 turns away in Murica) the catapults cannot be upgraded to Trebuchets anytime soon.

All the catapults of AGE however, are upgraded to Trebuchets.

IBT- Sumeria and Egypt sign an allianceagainst the Mayan…… if they can do that…… what is stopping them from signing an alliance against Spain??

880AD
It was once noted at a royal party that Isabella proclaimed, “northing catches me by surprise, I am Queen by order of God Himself, I know everything that I need to, nothing phases me”.

This did-

http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads7/steviejay_880ad.JPG

Musketmen……. The Egyptians have harnessed the power of gunpowder. After the initial shock, the realisation is Spain must continue on to get to her objectives before the Egyptian army can be brought to bear.

AGW again tries to destroy the link to the iron deposit and fails. Catapults just do not have the power.

IBT- Nothing. Messangers return from the front with absolutely no news, they are sent back to the front with one command from Isabella, find the Egyptian army.

890AD
Whilst AGW sits peacefully in their captured cities rebuilding their strength for the assault on Thebes, AGE begins a bombardment against the most powerful defenders yet encountered. However God must be looking down on the Spanish people once more, the bombardment is a resounding success, decimating the defenders of Abydos. The small group of Med Inf charge the dazed defenders and, without loosing a single man in the mellee, not one…

http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads7/steviejay_890ad.JPG
The Med Inf capture the city as if the defending units weren’t even there. And Isabella was worried about the strength of such units!

IBT-
“The Egpytians move a Knight to within range of Elephantine, and a longbow man just out of reach. That is the only news from the front. The Koreans are also acting strangely my Queen, they are sending a great deal of units up the mountain range on the west side of the Great Lake, and the units which they sent up the east side have turned and are now heading west. We do not know where they are heading. Worst case scenario, they are going to try to take our Egyptian holdings as our Right of Passage with them ends very shortly"

THats me completely up to date with my story. I wasn't planning on writing so much at once but I kinda had a wee tiff with the girlfriend so I didn't really feel like sleeping and just felt like playing.

On thinking about it I think I could have handled the Egyptian invasion better. with so little Egyptian units I could have steam rolled through the majority of them before Cleo could react.

On comparing this game with the last one, there's ALOT more civilizations going about. In the first game the Celts and Russians took out the Scandinavians, English and Germans and on the other continent the Japanese and Chinese took out the Aztecs, Americans and the Indians. but in this game, everyone's in with a chance. The main factor here is iron. I have a source, Egypt does, Sumeria does and Korea does but thats about it. I'm not sure about the other nations though......

I'm wondering if Saltpetre is the same, if that is the case then I will be in a very good position because even if I personally don't have a source, I'll get one off Egypt. I'm still not certain if the Sumerians do.

I'm absolutely HATING the new Spanish traits, give me Commercialism over Seafaring ANYDAY, I'm having huge money troubles, and I can't change to republic because of my huge army and I can't disband the troops because if I'm going to take advange of my iron deposit(s) then I'll need to take out whats left of the Chinese and the Maya (I think the Indians have iron and saltpetre)

Things are going badly with the culture on the Sumerian border. If they get JS Bachs then I just dunno whats gonna happen, it won't be good. More or less all the border cities have everything including Colluceums(spelling) to try to dampen the Sumerian capital, but I don't think it'll be enough

This is so much harder than my last game

Another great read, but it seems like deja vu, only the Sumerians are starring as the Celts this time. You're putting off dealing with the most powerful nation until ... when? I fear you are picking the wrong opponent in Egypt when you should be trying to ally the whole continent against Sumeria before it's too late.

Apr 19, 2004, 04:50 PM
I wanted to extend my powerbase further north before I go toe to toe with the Sumerians. I was also hoping to get a few easily defendable cities north to counter the comming swarm of units coming back south after the Sumerians take out the Maya, the amount of units heading north each turn is just IMMENSE, so if I can get a few cities and heavily defend them then I don't need to worry about a huge counter attack from all the units which will turn right round the moment I declare war.

I just don't think myself powerful enough to take on the Sumerians at this moment in time. I don't have the units to take them on myself and I don't have the rescources to bring in the Indians or Koreans, which would be the only real threats to them. the Koreans would be really useful as I would then be able to squeeze them silly.

Another annoying thing is my lack of horses. I can't get knights at all and I won't be able to get horses from another civ untill Astronomy (or is it Navigation.......anyway) at least. So any war I have will be a slow, Med Inf/cannon/Trebuchet battle, and I don't have any armies so its a slow advance.

It'll require a great deal of planning.........

just a quick question. With the new patch for C3C and the whole corruption thing, does it matter where I place my Forbidden Palace? I know in the PTW and the like the FP acted as a second palace and reduced corruption accordingly, but I'm sure I read somewhere that this isn't the case now and instead lowers corruption slightly in general.

So if I was to build my FP in say........... Barcelona (stone throw away from Madrid) would this be a bad move, or should I instead try to place it further north??

gunsnroses

i believe that the corruption close to your (forbidden) palace is lowered thanks to it. So in that case it does matter where you build the FP. At least, i always build it reasonable far from my capitol. But i'm no expert, so let's wait what other say

900AD
19 troops of Army Group West, 6 Swordsmen, 2 Med Inf and 11 catapults begin their march on Memphis, and they have orders to disable the Egyptian Iron deposit on their way.

21 troops of Army Group East, 4 Med Inf and 17 Trebuchets enter the mountains surrounding Byblos. With morale high after the easy victories at Abydos it is hoped for a repeat at this objective.

IBT- Sumeria and China sign a peace treaty, guaranteeing their survival for ust a little longer, however, with Egyptian troops up north somewhere, it shouldn’t be long before their fate is sealed. The Koreans seem to be friendly, instead using our roads to continue north however an eye must still be kept on them less they notice the power they have over us.
India and Sumeria sign an alliance against the Maya, it is simply a dogpile now, they Maya cannot last.

The Egyptian knight fails miserable to retake Elephantine, loosing its life in the process. The Sumerians move even more troops north, Spanish Generals worry at just the sheer scale of units currently heading north at this moment in time, however it should be noted that there is no piece of information which states that they are sending musketmen north….. can they really have no source of saltpetre?

910AD
Both of the Army Groups march on their objectives. A relief force of Trebuchets and pikemen are being assembled just east of Almeria. When it has gathered sufficient force it shall march along the roads north, and relieve the defenders of the newly aquired cities.

IBT- Umma, a Sumerians city, completes Leonardo’s Workshop and an Egyptian Knight tries to attack a spearman situated on a mountain and dies horribly.

920AD
Despite a large bombardment of Byblos, it is decided by Spanish generals not to risk what little Med Inf AGE has in the field. It is hoped that when the Trebuchets are reloaded they can prove more decisive. In AGW, the task force move towards Memphis.

IBT- On Isabella’s insistence, the Right of Passage with Korea is renewed.
For some rather odd reason the “Spanish” people of Buto, have risen up against Isabella and pledged allegence to Egypt.

930AD
The bombardment of Byblos also proves to be fruitless, maybe next year.

IBT- With the renewed Right of Passage with Korea, Isabella finds it suitable to renew her Right of Passage with Sumeria as well.

In a huge display of courage and faith under fire, a knight, a longbowman and a Med Inf were defeated by 2 Med Inf and 1 swordsman respectively.

940AD
After another completely useless bombardment of Byblos it is decided that those troops will instead move back towards Abydos and then to Elephantine.

AGW is having more success though, with the larger cities, there are no walls, and although this gives an increased defence against the attackers, there is no bombard defence. Due to this, 3 Musketmen fall on Spanish swords…..

http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads7/steviejay_940ad.JPG

Hail to the Queen baby!!

IBT- Ur, the Sumerian capital completes JS Bachs Cathedral. How much culture are they pulling in now??

950AD
Due to a stupid error on the part of a drunken general, AGW mistakingly heads on a path north when it was meant to swing round south and engage the Egyptians at Thebes. This will now take several turns to fix. On the other front AGE heads west to attack, the larger, but more easily bombarded, city of El-Amarna

IBT- Egypt and China sign a peace treaty. Rough times are ahead….

960AD
The error is corrected and AGW heads south towards Thebes. In another moment of pure stupidity the rear guard of Army Group East notices that the walls of Byblos have been taken down to allow growth, so AGE is ordered to return to Byblos to capture the city.

IBT- No Egyptian movement, strange.

970AD
With the question of whether or not Sumeria actually has the ability to produce Musketmen like Egypt can, Isabella instructs a spearman from Spain to use Sumerian roads to do a quick scouting of their major cities. If indeed they don’t have saltpetre then that raises a very interesting question.

AGE arrives at Byblos once more, operations shall commence next turn. AGW is still outside of range of Thebes.

IBT- Maya offer’s Spain a peace treaty however this would cause serious offence to the Sumerian people, and he is regrettably declined.

The Egyptians from Buto manage to capture 3 of Spain’s workers and Memphis returns to Egyptian hands.

980AD
After a successful bombarding of Byblos, weakening the musketmen defending the city, 3 Med Inf rush forward to strike, killing 2 Musketmen for the loss of 1 Med Inf. Unfortunately for Spain, AGW does not have the offensive units needed to follow up this offensive, and it slowly dies out.

IBT- 3 Longbow units move north from Thebes towards the reaquired city of Memphis and also a longbowman from the city of Buto is successful in defeating a Spanish Pikeman at the Wine city of Teruel. The Sumerians begin work on the Smiths Trading Company.

990AD
With weakened troops, AGE is able to finally capture the Egyptian city of Byblos. Unfortunately despite a large bombardment, AGW is unable to even attempt to take the Egyptian capital and, with units threatening the Wine town of Teruel, Isabella decides that she must sue for peace. For the pleasure of meeting Isabella, Cleo is willing to throw in Invention for peace.

IBT- The Sumerians have so many troops going through Spanish territory that Isabella sometimes has trouble sleeping less she wake up to a Sumerian spear pointed in her face.

1010AD
A barracks is rushed in Heliopolis. Immediately 2 Spearmen are upgraded to Pike men, 2 Swordsmen are upgraded to Med Inf and 5 Catapults are upgraded to Trebuchet.

IBT- Egypt and Maya sign a peace treaty.

1020AD
Move more troops into both Army Groups, if they can be called such. Army Group East consists of 3 Med Inf and about 17 Trebuchets. Army group West fares better with several Pikemen and Med Inf, but not as many Trebuchets.

Spanish Galleys encounter another nation, the Iroquois.

With only 17 turns left before war is redeclared, Isabella decides that it might be best to get one Army Group to full strength first then work on the other rather than try to get both to full slower, as a result, AGW will get all new units until it reaches a state of readiness which Isabella and her generals find appropriate.

IBT- Spanish troops report a strange sight, Indian troops riding into battle on the backs of Elephants!!

1030AD
Troops which were heading to reinforce AGE are diverted to AGW, instead of trying to force Egypt in a pincer movement, Spanish tactics are now thinking instead of one large thrust, composing of the majority of Spanish offensive units.

IBT- Egypt begin work on Smiths Trading Company.

1040AD
Upgrade 2 Catapults to Trebuchets

IBT- The Sumerians cancel their alliance against the Maya with the Spanish. This is good, the Maya can become friends of Spain again. The Sumerians also seem to have contact with a race known as the Persians. For contact with the Incans they are willing to share, but Isabella is shrewd and will wait until she can offer it around the known world first.

1050AD
The Portugese will offer Spain Contact with the Persians, 3gpt and 12 gold for the Spanish contact with the Incans. Isabella agrees that this is a deal which Spain can accept.

The Persians know less than the Incans, and the generous Spanish gift to them the knowledge of Polytheism, Construction, Currency and Mathematics in the hope that they in turn will offer something acceptable to the Spanish people. And once more God looks down favourable on Spain and Isabella. For due to the Persians scientific nature, they are aware of the skills of Monotheism, a skill which has illuded Isabella for many a year. A straight trade for Engineering secures it for the Spanish people. The Sumerians offer 70 gold for contact with the Incans.

Isabella also offers the olive branch to Maya and a peace treaty is signed.

In a final act of Diplomatic genius, Isabella offers Feudalism to the Persians. It is hoped that they shall research new technology which can be traded with Spain for the skills of Literature, The Republic and Monarchy, which seems to baffle the Persian scientists. Also, Monotheism is traded with the Incans for 20 gold in the hope that they may learn new skills also which can be traded with Spain.

IBT- During this turn “Isabella” was required to go put the washing in the washing machine for her mother so missed troop movements for the enemy, however from a glance it does not seem as if Spain is in danger of invasion. (roughly translated as mum shouted and steviejay was required to go a running :( )

1060AD
Troops are arriving at Heliopolis, the headquarters of Army Group West, in trickles. They will be organised in groups once they arrive.

IBT- The Egpytians ask that Spanish troops be removed from their land. Oops

1070AD
More troop movement.

IBT-Sumeria and Korea sign an alliance against Maya

1080AD
This turn Isabella caught up on some much needed sleep zzzzzzzzzzzz

IBT- zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

1100AD
With the turn of a new century, AGW is finally at a strength which Isabella believes to be powerful enough to take on the Egyptians. 15 Trebuchets, 14 Med Inf, 4 Elite Swordsmen and 8 Pikemen. The pieces are set, all we need now is a match to ignite the fires of war once more.

Ok, here’s the plan.

http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads7/steviejay_1100.JPG

The light blue lines show the planned thrust, straight across Egyptian territory, ending at the vital spice city of Alexandria. However, Isabella is aware that, on the battlefield, plans rarely last the length of the entire war so as a result, she has requested that once Asyut has been taken, plans be made for two other, potential, attacks, should the opportunity arise. Once Asyut is taken, if the Egyptian capital looks in a vurnerable situation then every effort should be made to take the city. The loss of such an important city would surely damage Egyptian resistance. Also of a priority would be the old Chinese capital, Beijing, which currently holds the great wonder, the Great Wall. If at the time the city is taken that no opportunity arrises, the original plan will be used and Alexandria will eventually fall, ensuring that the other cities of the Egyptian “empire”, are thrown into anarchy.

IBT- No Egyptian movement.

1110AD
This time, defence is no longer an issue. The stack of 17 offensive troops which now form Army Group West are defended by eight Pike men units and aided by 15 Trebuchets. Move AGW to the jump off point. The hills north of Hieraconpolis, 2 turns march to Memphis. Peace Treaty be damned.

IBT- Sumeria ropes in Carthage against the Maya. Dogpile/

Heliopolis flips back to Egypt. Oh well, good place to start.

1120AD
Its noted that instead of a Musketman appearing to defend the city of Heliopolis after it flipped, there is instead a pikeman, this suggests that the Egyptians have lost control of their saltpetre deposit.

Isabella demands the audience of Cleopatra and almost immediately begins a long speech on the religious purity of the Spanish people over the Multi-God Egyptians and how their preaching to false gods has greatly angered the true God. Once she has finished, she slams her fist onto the table and in a clear voice, explains why Cleopatra was called today, “Give us the secrets of Gunpowder or perish”, with a laugh, Cleopatra tells us to forget about it. And with that, war is declared, reputation be damned.

In this move, AGW begins its trek towards Memphis and what is AGE in name only, advances on Alexandria to harass the defenders there.

IBT- Spain renews her Right of Passage with Korea, firming up a friendship which has lasted since almost the beginning of time.

Egypt kill a Med Inf from AGE using a Knight, Isabella wasn’t aware they possessed mounted units and is rather angry at her embassy for not informing her prior to the declaration of war.

Heliopolis is “liberated” once more. Spanish Med Inf kill two Egyptian Longbowmen at Buto and AGW moves closer to Memphis. AGE bombards two Egyptian longbowmen that strayed within range of their Trebuchets.

IBT- The Koreans offer an alliance against Maya, which is politely refused. Spanish troops are too busy with Egypt at present.

Sumeria cancel their RoP with Spain.

Egyptians kill a Med Inf from AGE with longbowmen

1130AD
Recapture Heliopolis with no losses. That was the east part……

Kill 2 Longbowmen from the city of Buto that tried to sneak south to attack Spanish interests there. Taking Buto will be near on impossible without trebuchet support, and Isabella can’t afford to divert the units.

IBT- Sumerians cancel their RoP with Spain.

Egyptians capture 4 Spanish workers and 1 Trebuchet, but fail to attack either Army Group.

Sumerians begin work on Newton’s University. They’re THAT far in front???

1140AD
Recapture the Spanish workers and kill the Knight responsible, even if it does cost Spain THREE Med Inf to accomplish the task. Move AGW towards Memphis and order AGE to return to the relative safety of Byblos

IBT- The Iroquois and the Sumerians sign an alliance against Maya.

Portuguese begin work on NU.

The Egyptians attack both Army Groups. No losses with 2 lost longbowmen and 1 retreated knight. They are able to kill the pikeman that went to the rescue of the 4 Spanish workers stolen last turn. Isabella is afraid to admit it to anyone, but she just doesn’t have the defensive troops needed to go toe to toe with longbowmen and knights.

Ur completes Smiths Trading Company.

IBT- Sumerians rope in the Inca against Maya, its getting silly now.

Loose 1 pikeman, 1 Med Inf, 1 Swordsman and 1 Trebuchet.

Little action on the Egyptian front this turn

1170AD
Move AGW towards the next objective, the Spanish city of Heliopolis is under threat from Egyptian Knights. Isabella agrees its time to act.

http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads7/steviejay_1160.JPG

And act she did!!

IBT- Spanish troops at Heliopolis kill 2 Egyptian knights and a “brave” Egyptian longbowman attempts to attack AGW but is unsuccessful.

1180AD
AGW moves into the surrounding countryside of Asyut. By now the whole Egyptian nation knows about Spain’s policy and what happened to the inhabitants of Memphis and a panic ensures.

Much to the happiness of the inhabitants of Heliopolis and Hieraconpolis, Spanish troops are able to kill an Egyptian knight and longbowman to ensure the safety of the two towns for the time being.

AGE is able to bombard and kill 2 Egyptian longbowmen.

IBT- News reaches Isabella that the Sumerians have capturerd the Mayan capital. Her advisors predict it will only be a matter of time before the once great nation crumbles.

On the Egyptian front an Egyptian longbowman looses his life to Spanish pikemen, both Army Groups were not touched.

1190AD
After a large bombardment of Asyut, the defenders are left a shadow of their former self. With great skill Spanish generals throw their troops into battle, and, once the fisrt defender has been vanquished….

http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads7/steviejay_1190ad.JPG

His name is Cordoba and he proclaims his superiour military knowledge and to prove it further, shall establish an army the likes as which has never been seen. He shall band together the best of the Medieval Infantry into one superiour force. This greatly pleases Isabella and it is rumoured that there has been several……… intimate letters exchanged between the Queen and Cordoba

However, the main problem becomes now clear. Cordoba states, that in order to train the med inf in the ways of fighting in a proper army, he needs the rescources of a city. But at present he is stranded, along with all the other troops of Army Group West, deep in enemy territory. And with Spain’s scorched earth policy, it may be some time before he can safely return to a city. Now the generals of AGW are stuck with a difficult situation. Do they allow Cordoba to tag along with AGW until the end of the Egyptian campaign…… or do they capture Asyut, disobey Isabella’s order to burn everything and instead hold the city to allow Cordoba to train his army. Such a force would be of great help in the destruction of Egypt, but can such a city be held??

Cordoba shall name his army, “Isabella's Fury”, and it shall be used to crush her enemies. It will be sent north towards the city of Tatung whilst the rest of AGW moves on east towards El-Amarna.

On the eastern front, an attempt is again made by the generals to try to push back the Egyptians. 4 Pikemen and 2 Med Inf are sent to guard the 16 Trebuchets of Army Group East, if it can be called such, as they advance on the Spice city of Alexandria.

IBT- An Egyptian Knight tries to dislodge the defenders of Byblos but fails miserably. They Egyptians seem to be withdrawing their attacking troops, possibly to regroup. A pikeman/settler pair seems to be moving towards the land opened up by the destruction of Memphis.

1200AD
With complete ease, Isabella’s Fury is able to slice through two Egyptian pikemen at Tatung

Throughout Egypt, Spanish troops are able to kill another two of the dreaded Egyptian longbowmen and an Egyptian Knight. The Egyptians are now down to a small force and a handful of cities. However it will be impossible to complete wipe out the Egyptians at this time, due to the rather annoying city on the other continent. So Isabella has demanded that all Egyptian territory be seized on this continent and it is hoped the peace treaty shall be extremely favourable to the Spanish people.

Also this turn, the culture of the two cities of Heliopolis and Hieraconpolis has proven too much for the feeble Egyptians, and the boundaries of the cities grow. Because of this growth, the Egyptian supply of iron is now in Spanish hands. With a slight monopoly on iron, in a largely ironless world, the demand is large. The demand is so great that for the spare supply of iron, India will almost teach the Spanish people the skills of tempering gunpowder. For 54 gold and 1gpt, India share the knowledge. This will greatly boost India’s fighting ability against the Egyptian skum and also allow Spain to produce a powerful defensive unit.

Despite one frantic few minutes whilst Isabella demanded to speak to Spanish Geologists to confirm that Spain did have a supply of Saltpetre, it greatly pleased Isabella to learn that Spain has two sources-

http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads7/steviejay_1200ad.JPG

both in Egyptian land conquered at the start of the war so many years ago.

With two sources, Isabella demands that someone be found for Spanish wares. She is shocked to find that Sumeria does not have a source, despite seeing Sumerian troops carrying muskets for quite some time. Will Sumeria trade………

http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads7/steviejay_1200ad1.JPG

When news reached Isabella of what the Sumerians were offering for Spain’s supply of Saltpetre, she wasn’t so much surprised, as perplexed. Fearing some trickery by her advisors was afoot, she failed to believe it at first, but after much discussion with her advisors, it was found to be genuine, and “the Spanish mouth bit the Sumerian hand up to the elbow”

IBT- Portugal and Sumeria sign an alliance against Maya. I bet they wish they hadn’t declared war now. The Sumerians rope in the Byzantine as well. And almost immediately as soon as Isabella hears news of these new alliances, an extremely eager Sumerian delegate arrives to request that Spain joins in with the rest of the world in battle against the Maya. With no trade that Isabella’s aware of, Spain agree’s, might make the Sumerians like us more.

Egyptians take out one Med Inf, but another is able to fight them off.

1210AD
With the straightforward, by the book destruction of two Egyptian spearmen, the city of Tatung falls to Isabella’s Fury, trapping 6 Egyptian workers and a worker from the lost civilization of the Chinese.

With the fall of Tatung, AGW moves east along a jungle road, towards the next objective. As they move scouts from the force discover an Egyptian Longbowmen in the thick tree’s adjacent to the Spanish troops, without trebuchet support (as this would slow the advance down) an elite Spanish swordsman charges forward and …….

Hail to the Queen baby!! Bartolome comes from the same stock as Cordoba and as a result, shall form another Medievil Infantry Army, Isabella’s Wrath.

Unfortunately, the imergance of a leader has also highlighted the road ahead which AGW will follow, and, much to the horror of the generals leading the force, it does not go all the way through the jungle as previously thought. As a result, the force must go back the way it came and form another plan of advance

AGE finally reaches the city of Alexandria. After a brief rest to set up the Trebuchets, an assault shall begin.

The Sumerians look different……..

IBT- The Egyptians pounce upon the swordsman unit from which Bartolome appeared and, despite a ferocious defence, which saw the death of an Egyptian longbowman, he finally falls. Also, the cowardly Egyptians try to dislodge the force outside Alexandria but fail miserably. Perhaps they have lost their bottle. There is also a group of 2 Musketmen who seem to be roaming about. Their purpose is still unknown

1220AD
After a large bombardment of Alexandria, it is discovered that there are 2 pikemen, 1 spearman and 1 longbowmen situated in the city. The Trebuchets bring all 4 defenders to redlined, but they still outnumber the two Med Inf which have tagged on with the force. First Med Inf goes in…. looses, 2nd……. Win, 2 left. Whilst waiting to weigh up the options one general looks down upon the defenders of Alexandria and gives the order, attack. The pikemen seem cumbersome with their large weapons and they look even worse trying to advance on the enemy with them. First Pikeman…… win…….. second…….. win, but only just…….. could we?...... third pikeman against longbowman…….

http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads7/steviejay_1220ad.JPG

Victory!!!!

No less than SIX sources of Spice are now in Spanish hands. Such news will please Isabella greatly as this will please her people, and even better, the foreign traders. However at this point no trade will be undertaken, not until the city is secured.

At great risk, Isabella’s Fury moves north towards Beijing. This leaves the city of Tatung undefended for the time being, but Isabella believes that it is a risk worth taking, she cannot risk the Great Wall falling into Indian hands, and to prove her point, there are two Indian War Elephants outside the city.

Kill 1 longbowman threatening Elephantine. Send AGW south towards Thebes.

Attack a weakened Musketman with an elite swordsman….. no leader.

What is sure to be only a footnote in the cronicles of the great Spanish Empire, the city of Buto is retaken after Isabella finally allocated enough units to the task, the Egyptian “empire” grows smaller still”.

IBT- India and Maya sign a peace treaty, nice of them.

But to counter this, the Sumerians bring in the Persians against the Mayan.

The Sumerians have cavalry……..

Loose a Med Inf just west of Elephantine.

1230AD
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads7/steviejay_1230ad.JPG

With only one enemy left in Beijing thanks to the Indian War Elephants, the city falls without any incidents.
With only one enemy left in Beijing thanks to the Indian War Elephants, the city falls without any incidents.

For 47gpt, Spice is sold to the Sumerians. They are extremely gracious with the Spanish people.

AGW heads towards Thebes and Isabella’s Wrath attacks the defenders. It is able to kill a pikeman but suffers heavily for it.

IBT- a bathroom break means that the chronicles of what happened inbetween this turn shall forever be lost. However from a brief scan of the battlefield the only noticeable move is that those two wandering Musketmen have wandered in the direction of Hieraconpolis. Although a vet pikeman behind city walls should be enough to defeat a musketman, Isabella has not progressed this far by taking chances so a pikeman will be transferred from Heliopolis.

1240AD
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads7/steviejay_1240ad.JPG

The question of “is there a city south of Thebes” has been answered.

AGE is moved south to El-Amarna. Although extremely short on offensive units, it is hoped for the same favourable conditions which allowed them to take Alexandria.

On its travels, the Spanish Galley (yes its still alive) comes across a Carthagian city known as Hippo. Much giggling ensued.

IBT- Maya and Inca sign a peace treaty.

A number of Indian units are heading south. Probably tocapture the city of El-Amarna.

Byblos flips back to Egypt.

steviejay

1250AD
For the loss of a single Med Inf, the city of Thebes, the capital of the puny Egyptian Empire, falls. Isabella holds a grand party in Madrid to honour such an occasion

AGE moves closer to El-Amarna and the Med Inf not used in the attack on Thebes, moves to Giza, the new home of Cleopatra.

IBT- The Egyptians disconnect one of Spain’s iron supply and Elephantine flips back to Egypt. What causes flips? What factors are used in determining what flips and what doesn’t???

Lisbon completes Newton’s University.

1255AD
Move AGW towards Giza and Isabella’s Fury towards El-Amarna. Move troops towards Elephantine, but that is not a priority.

IBT- Thebes flips. That was fast……

1260AD
Thankfully the pikeman gambit worked, and with the loss of only a single pikeman, El-Amarna is now in Spanish hands. The frsit good new in some time for Isabella.

With 5 War Elephants outside Byblos, that city is all but lost.

3 musketmen are bombarded and then wiped out by Army Group West and Giza is captured. With so much trouble with keeping the cities they are captured, Isabella orders the complete razing of the city of Giza. The city which for so long was unknown to the Spanish people will soon be forgotten once more. Isabella just isn’t in the mood to be nice.

Move troops into positon around Thebes and Elephantine. With luck, the war should end next turn

IBT- Egypt capture two workers, they won’t have them for long.

1265AD
Thebes is captured by using only 1 Med Inf. One left….

Elephantine is also finally recaptured, for the loss of 1 Med Inf.

For good measure, Isabella’s Fury takes out an Egyptian Musketman.

Time for peace……

http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads7/steviejay_peace.JPG

It would have been possible to get Chivalry as part of the deal if Spanish treasurers had parted with some gold, but to be honest, it is not needed. Firstly Spain has no horses of her own so they would need to be imported at great cost. Secondly it would cost a great deal of money to build all these fancy knights and by the time a suitable force would be built, then Cavalry would be upon us all. So no, this deal is acceptable to the Spanish People.

However……… hmmmm………….. if Spain was to purchase Theology from another source…….. would Egypt part with something more valuable…… for 950 gold and her World Map, Theology is bought from the Indians.

http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads7/steviejay_peace2.JPG

That shall do nicely. And so ends the Second Egyptian War. Egypt can no longer be called anything close to a power. Spain has greatly improved her chance of survival for the time being. Now is the time to look elsewhere for conquest.....

This is Sumeria. The red lines are the borders Spain has with them. Seeing as both civ’s are blue bordered then the red lines will make it easier. The 4 cities circled with blue are main Sumerian cities. They all have wonders, hell Ur has about 4!!
Trying to work out how to invade………

http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads7/steviejay_spain_invasion.JPG

If the invasion is launched from Valencia then the Spanish invasion force can reach the core cities in the opening turns. The huge amount of units up north means that in a number of turns there’s going to be a horde of units coming down which will just chew up my newly conquered Egyptian cities so speed is essential. That means, auto razing. Burn down as much cities as is possible and go grovelling for peace.

If an invasion is launched from Valencia that means that there’ll be a number of Sumerian cities to the forces rear. Ideally those cities would be better returned to the Spanish Empire. No cities pushing into Spanish territory would guarantee some of the more productive centers. But taking these cities would slow down the advance onto the core Sumerian cities and ultimately, give the forces to the north more time to return to the home land.

However………. If India was to declare war on the Sumerians……the amount of units coming from the north would be limited.

Giving on average a minimum of 3 Mustketmen per city, say….. size 10 cities each, on average. And with only Med Inf there’ll need to be a huge amount of them and worse, they’re will be a huge casualty rate. Say. 2 Med Inf per Mustketmen, and that’s with a hugely successful bombardment from the Trebuchets. So the forces required would be……. 30 – 40 Med Inf maybe? With all the trebuchets available, more than what will be needed to take the cities so there will be a form of defensive bombardment should the stack be attacked. And that brings us to a new question…. Defence. The Sumerians have Cavalry. 6/3/3 is better than 2/4/1 anyday

http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads7/steviejay_offensive.JPG
Start on the far right X and move to position 1. Attack the city and Raze it to the ground. Use the newly opened land to move to position 2. The mountains will allow great protection against Sumerians cavalry retaliations. The biggest threat from Sumerian counter attacks will be on the long march to the city of Umma, objective 3. The level grasslands will offer a great opportunity for Sumerian Cavalry to pound the attacking force. To counter this the attacking force shall to go the objective with the river Umma on their left side, which should offer some protection against attacks.

So defensively how many units should be assigned. Say……….. 10 – 20?? Probably more like 20. Cavalry shouldn’t be taken lightly.

But how long will it take to build such a force??? Currently the Spanish Army has 26 Med Inf, 2 Armies (both Med Inf) 33 Trebuchets but only 3 Musketmen. If the entire Spanish economy was pushed behind the coming war then it should be possible to get the required units. With Isabella being a friend of rounding things off, the force should consist of 40 Trebuchets, 40 Med Inf and 20 Musketmen.

Can the force be built before the Sumerians unleash another invention which will make the possible invasion harder??

Need to do some more enquiries, pick out productive cities and change production to a war footing but the idea seems sound. I just need to try to get an idea on the type of response that the Sumerians would give me for invasion. Then I've got to try to find a way to get the Indians in on the game. Things to do things to do..........

Do the Sumerians have more than one horse source? If not, taking their one souce will ensure you ahve no new cav units to face hehe. :) Good luck!

steviejay
Apr 25, 2004, 09:00 AM
Unfortunately I'd thought of that and yes, they do have an extra source of horses. One on my border with them (Umma) and one on the opposite side, on the Korean border (Zabalam)

The Koreans owuld be nice but the Indians are essential. I honestly can't tell you how many units headed north. since the Mayans declared war WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY back in 420AD the Sumerians have been sending units north. They've wiped out the Mayans but they're still sending units north, I dunno why, would be really nce if they declared war on the Indians, save me the bother of trying to persuade the Indians to join in my struggle.

If the Koreans come to play they shall die gloriously in battle, can't be helped but it should take some heat off me.

Done a quick check of Ur, its pumping out 28spt, thats a Cavalry every 3 turns. All the main cities in Sumeria are size 11 or 12, so I'm looking at around 7 cavalry every three turns, excluding the units which I'll need to take care of which are currently moving through Spanish territory to get up north. need to do more planning.....

did you consider the likely hood that Sumeria might attack you from Isin, bad-tibira,, zaragoza, marad or other cities that's north of Ur?

just wondering...

steviejay
Apr 25, 2004, 09:12 AM
did give it some thought (when you've got armies marching through your empire its hard not to!) but I don't think they'll touch me. They've been marching units through my empire for close to 1000 years and haven't touched me so I doubt they will.

if you're refering to when I actually declare war, then yes, I think an offensive from those cities is very possible, thats why I considered taking them out first, but if I did then it would allow Sumeria more time to defend her larger cities, which I will need to burn to the ground to severely hamper their ability to retaliate. I'm kinda hoping on the time table- burn Jaen to the ground turn two of the war, burn Der to the ground turn 4. Take away two size 12 cities and thats gotta hurt. If I can get the Koreans in then hopefully they can take away the Sumerian horse source at Zabalam, leaving their only deposit at Umma. The good thing is that the Sumerians don't have any saltpetre. I'M giving it to them at a hefty price (115gpt) that means when it runs out then they might not be able to upgrade to riflemen, making my life alot easier cause I'm sure they're almost at that point.

oh............. yeah thats right ain't it, oops. feel slightly silly now. but the Sumerians were producing Musketmen long before I traded them Saltpetre so they're getting a source of Saltpetre from somewhere.

ok, I have bad news for everyone that may have been following this game. FOr the past two weeks I've been having problems with my computer due to a "few" viruses, this severely restricted what I could do on the computer (had to use a mates computer for internet access) and I couldn't play Civ.

It got to the point where I was screaming at the computer so I was forced to reinstall windows. I backed up everything and I put the saved game especially on its own floppy disc (remember what happened with my last Spanish game where I forgot to carry it across and it was stuck on my old computer??) anyway I reinstalled windows and I was putting everything back on the computer. Shoved the floppy disc into the drive and copied the saved file, went to paste it and............ nothing happened. :hmm: tried again, this time I notice that the A drive is making alot more noise than it should trying to read the disc. After a few more attempts it finally tells me that the "disc is corrupt" I tried a few more times in desperation to get it to copy across (even tried to load up the saved game from the floppy) but to no avail.

I'm sorry to everyone that I can no longer finish this game, I'm quite depressed about it as well considering the feedback I was getting from all of you.

I just want to say sorry again to everyone who was reading my attempt to regain some honour and I appologise to the upmost at my inability to double back up the saved file.
