View Full Version : A note to map makers, please read
Thunderfall Nov 08, 2001, 08:18 AM You should always add a ReadMe file to the map zip file so people know who created the map. You don't need to write a long readme -- a short description of the map, date the map was created, and your contact info (name/nickname and email) would suffice.
*** The attached (txt/doc) file should have a unique name, preferably resembling the name of your map. So if your map is called "Sweden versus Denmark", you could name it say "sweVSden", rather than just calling the file readme.txt/readme.doc.
How to take a snapshot of the mini-map
Load the map using the "Load Scenario" option, then retire. You will see the mini-map in the game replay screen.
Pggar Nov 08, 2001, 08:28 AM In addition, if it doesn't cause you much troube, some shots inside the thread (even from the editor) to give us an idea of how good your map is. ;)
Thunderfall Nov 08, 2001, 08:36 AM yeah, a snap shot of the mini-map would be nice. :)
BTW, we had a little problem with the Views counter and the attachment counter (# of times downloaded) yesterday and earlier today. The problem should be fixed now....
Danno Nov 25, 2001, 06:56 PM has anyone made a map of australia yet???
IamSPARTACUS Jan 20, 2002, 01:42 PM i did the retire thing but how do i save the picture ? thanks...
[plasma]:die!:
Thunderfall Jan 21, 2002, 12:04 AM You can take screenshots using HyperSnap. All the Civ3 screenshots I took were taken with that program. :)

kittenOFchaos Jan 21, 2002, 05:28 AM My advise when concerning maps of the REAL WORLD to actually research were to put resources REMEMBERING their context in the game.
I will soon have done this myself :)
How how I wish we have a greater variety of terrains

damunzy Jan 21, 2002, 08:18 PM www.analogx.com
this guy has a free screen capture utility. I personally like the one built into windows. Just hit the "print screen" key and then paste the information into the program "MS Paint". The AnalogX one allows you to automatically name and save the files for taking lots of screen shots fast.
Malta Jan 23, 2002, 04:44 PM Thunderfall, perhaps you could edit your original post adding this suggestion:
The attached (txt/doc) file should have a unique name, preferably resembling the name of your map. So if your map is called "Sweden versus Denmark", you could name it say "sweVSden", rather than just calling the file readme.txt/readme.doc.
As a mapmaker and player in the Heroes community, this (naming attached files in a meaningful way) is considered common decency, and I think it would be nice if the Civ mapmakers could also get into the habit. As it is now, when I download a couple of maps I suddenly have several text-files which donīt reveal to which map they belong and which are called almost the same. That's confusing...
With that said, a great thanks to the people that actually bother creating maps.

That's a good idea. I am a huge Heroes fan myself so I know what you are talking about. :)

It's not a big problem. After you take a full screenhot of that screen, just crop the image a bit using the program's built-in image editing tool. That'll get rid of the stupid logo. :)
IamSPARTACUS Jan 25, 2002, 06:45 PM hey thunderfall... if you look at my preview on Boatless Journey you can see the improments ive made ;)
Kal-el Jun 07, 2002, 12:34 PM even easier than downloading some program is using the print screen button on your keyboard. Just hit that then open up MS Paint and paste the contents onto the canvas. From there you just crop the image to size.
tc_trancer Aug 27, 2002, 06:06 PM cool! i never new what that 'print screen' feature did, but now i do. cool, thanks for pointing that out, palehorse.

Actually, I have this problem from several games, not to mention all the other files from various proggies I've picked up. I have, still, over 900 "readme.txt" files on my system.
Here's what I do:
I take that file and rename it to "WhateverTheProgramIs Called.rme" so that I can tell by a search which readme I want to open. I tagged .rme files so they open in Notepad and they automagically open when double clicked.

Below the text box, smilies, and submit button is another area called 'additional options' - which includes an attachment feature. The other option is uploading to the server. You can do that by clicking the upload link at the bottom of the webpage (a new window opens with instructions).

Maccabee Feb 05, 2006, 11:52 PM Do I need third-party imaging software to create and post a thumbnail of say, the minimap or a screenshot, into a thread? I noticed several threads include thumbnails. Can I do this with the MS Paint or something else within WinXPPro?
Thanks for any advice.
Maccabee Feb 06, 2006, 10:22 PM Nevermind the previous request. I finally figured it out, with a little help.
rifleman Feb 02, 2007, 02:27 PM OK, huge bump here, sorry.
Is there a program that can generate civ maps from real maps? I'd really like to have an extremely large (360x360) map of the Med, but making something that big is way too tedious. Is there something out there that others have used?
d.highland Feb 02, 2007, 02:31 PM Not that I know of, sorry. There are however, many map files here, you might find the right one for your purpose.
Yoda Power Feb 04, 2007, 11:14 AM There is a bmp to bic utility, but it still requires a lot of work.

Plotinus Apr 01, 2007, 12:31 PM Click on "Downloads" near the top of the screen to go to the File Database. There's an option there to Add a file.
