The modern day tri-colour flag was only used after the Revolution and the First Republic. But what was the flag immediately before that. Was it a gold lion on a blue background?

when pope leo II crown charlemage in 800 ad he gave him a blue banner with gold fleurs de lis on it. phillip I in 1076ad had it as his symbol. it was a dozen or so fluers de lis on the banner till 1376ad when it changed to just 3

Actually the flags posted here do not exist since Louis XIV. The flag of the last Bourbon Kings before the Revolution was either plain white or white with the three gold fleurs de lis.
