I was playing around on a tiny self made world. It had six islands far enough apart that they could not be reach until ships could cross open water.

well it turns out that only 4 civs can play on a tiny map, so barbarians (raging hords) we able to rule with impunity on the other two islands.

well when I got the Great lighthouse and i set sail to check on the so called Barbarians. I found the island was full of horsemen.

Not only that, my first ship was mob attacked by 6 galleys.

I decided that the barbarians had their fun and it was time to "culture" the barbarians with a force of 4 galleys with veteran swordmen and pikemen.

NEVER UNDERESTIMATE BARBARIAN SPAWNING!!

Not only did I lose 2 of my 4 ships on the way in, I could not find a place to land. Every square was covered. Four units finally made landfall were attacked mearcylessly. They held off the first 6 or 7 attacks, but eventally cracked.

Before the last swordman fell I saw the "village" that spawn the Barbarians. I could not believe that there were 31 horsemen and 2 conscript warriors still inside.

I sure hope they don't learn astronomy before I discover the nuke!

hehehehe

You should just welcome them with open arms. They are a rowdy but loving bunch. ;)

I have noticed the same thing to a much lesser extent. I tell you I will now focus on finding the hole they are crawling out of instead of taking them out one by one.

Im a new civ. player and they just about drove me crazy in mylast game. They kept coming down from the north and sacking my cities and colonies. It help aid my downfall but I really thing it was the 4 computer players that all the sudden allied against me for no apparent reason.

Oh well Ruler Rochelle will be back.:D

I had similar results on Raging barbarians settings. Stacks of 17 to 24 horseman suddenly appearing outside my city or chasing around my settlers. I had an elite archer on a mountain pick of 7 out of 24, but there were still more behind them. :sniper:

And any one get a Great Leader while fighting barbarians?
Or there is no chance to get GL from barbarians at all?

I don't know for sure, but I've never seen it happen. I've had maybe 8 or so leaders total and they've all appeared after attacking enemy civs...and you know you attack barbarians at least twice as much.

You can get your troops to ELITE fighting barbarians.

I read somewhere, that you must beat a civ to get a great leader.

On one map I made, simply to enjoy the fun of building without being bugged, I put 32 barbarian villages, with only 2 routes to reach my little corner of paradise. Mein gott, that was a mistake!

Hordes of barbarians came down almost EVERY turn. I had spearmen fighting off a dozen at a time. About the only thing barbarians are good for (and why you shouldn't wipe out their villages) is creating elite troops. If you can keep cycling regular and veteran units forward, do so. Just do NOT expect any GL out of it. I must have created 30 elite units, and no matter how many barbarians they killed every turn, not a one became a GL.

I'm not sure if that's true. I've gotten ONE great leader to date, but I can't remember if it came after defeating a civ. I don't think it was, though.

Just to clarify -

You must win a battle vs. another Civ. It can be a totally unexpected battle. I got leader #2 with modern tank vs. calvary. Of course, it is so late in the game, I am trying to figure out where to use him. #1 was easy - Moved the palace to my new continent I was taking over. ;)
