View Full Version : Indian Summer
GR8Madmax May 12, 2004, 02:39 PM This is my first story and I’m definitely not a story teller. I’ll try my best to write something interesting and worth reading. Feel free to comment/criticize/suggest as I progress. Any feedback will be helpful. :goodjob:
I’ve had the idea for this story for a while but school kept me busy. Now that the finals are over, I get to work on this.

GR8Madmax May 12, 2004, 02:55 PM The summer has been hot and humid as usual and Orhan Gandhi has been enjoying his vacation from school. He sat on the steps of the Museum of Arts and Sciences in Delhi, watching all the foot traffic in and out of the magnificent edifice. He was kicked out of his favorite spot in the museum as that particular section was being renovated. He loved Indian history, especially the War Elephant Display and spent countless hours inside the building when ever he could.
Being the son of one of the greatest men in history has its drawbacks. Your privacy is limited as your every move is watched by personal security. Today he was lucky. He snuck out of the palace without any one noticing. He was extra careful today as he “borrowed” his father’s prized procession, the journal that contained the historical events of the great Indian nation. All the history books that he ever read at school were based on this journal. The great Mahatma Gandhi is overseas, spreading his word of peaceful coexistence, and won’t miss it any way. Orhan looked around once again, realized it is indeed safe and opened the journal.
Chapter 1 – The Beginning
4000 BC – I am Mohandas Gandhi. My distant ancestors were nomads, but over many generations they became skilled at farming, road-building and irrigation, and settled down in small communities. People have vested absolute power in me, trusting that I can build an Indian civilization to stand the test of time. This is my journal.
The artist finally finished “the Great City of Delhi” on the place wall and it looked great. He also had limited information regarding the surroundings of the city as brave explorers were hard to recruit. I have asked the artist to do future drawings and paintings. Tiger attacks were being reported to the South of the city and the Himalayas to the West were haunted by the mythical Yeti. The “abominable snowman” is said to have the ability to make itself invisible and appear at will.

3750 BC – I made a proclamation that any one brave enough to go on an exploration mission to the East will be given 10 pieces of gold. One brave warrior emerged from the crowd and said he will risk his life for the future of the Indian nation. I was overjoyed!
3700 BC – We are not alone! The brave warrior has come into contact with a native Ainu Tribe. The Ainu were amazed by the stories the warrior told…the brave new nation, peaceful leader, mythical creatures. The Ainu offered some spices that they acquired from the region and the warrior liked the taste of spices in his “curry”. He has sent recipes back to Delhi. I can’t wait for dinner! They also gave him a map of the region and sent him off on his journey.
I had hoped many new explorers to come forward after hearing the stories the warrior told. But, only one other soul came forward. I am disappointed.

3300 BC – The fearless warriors explored the region and discovered many amazing details. We made contact with another native tribe, the Hsung-Nu, and they taught us the art of Bronze Working. A local blacksmith brought me a gift today. A copper armband and a well crafted pendant. I wore it proudly. Metal smiths all over the city were busy making new objects from bronze. Bronze tools, sculptures, daggers were becoming common.
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads7/IS3_3300BC.jpg
3200 BC – We were attacked today by savages to the east of Delhi. One of the exploring warriors intruded into a barbarian camp and was ambushed by the cannibals. These savages ignored the peaceful message and attacked the explorer, intending to make him dinner. The fearless warrior killed 3 of the attackers and barely escaped with his life. I can’t believe there are such beasts in this world. India will show how to live peacefully.

Chapter 2 – The Expansion
Orhan was fascinated by the entries in the journal...the Yeti, cannibalistic barbarians, exploration into the unknown…it was all new to him. Although he could understand why they wouldn’t want students to read a lot of this, he longed for history text books this detailed. He wondered about how the citizens of India dealt with daily lives back then. They surely would have loved the technology of the present day, he thought. He decided to go make some freshly squeezed lemonade before venturing further into the mysteries of the journal.
2270 BC – Things have changed. India has a good idea of what surrounds us. I have the courageous citizens of Delhi to thank. Some of the explorers have settled down near the Himalayas and the upstart town was called Bombay. Many men, women and children have made the trek to the new city and have called it their home. Bombay is growing. The citizens of Bombay suffered long, harsh winters but I never heard any complaints from them. The cold winters were very profitable for the fur merchants though. Fur is also very popular in Delhi. The snowy peaks of the Himalayas were supposedly a sight to see. Many reported sightings of the Yeti also came in but no one gave me enough proof to send out an exploration party into the Himalayan Mountains. I will visit Bombay one day.
2190 BC – I got word that a mystic named Lord McCauley has completed the great history of the world. According to him, my tiny nation is the 3rd wealthiest country in the world. I asked my Foreign Advisor what he thought of this. According to him, Lord McCauley is a drunk, delusional, gypsy who likes to make things up. The Foreign Advisor thinks that India is the only nation in this world and the rest are native tribes and barbarians. I suspected that the Foreign Advisor was clueless. I must find the advisor something to do as he sleeps majority of the day and all of the night.
2150 BC – India is expanding. More settlers have come forward and asked permission to settle the vast grasslands to the east. I was delighted when I heard this and we celebrated for a whole week before the settler party left. I personally sent them off on their long journey and wished them well. My Military Advisor wanted some of our warriors to escort the settlers. India simply didn’t have the resources to train men for their protection. I was very distraught and have had countless sleepless nights thinking of their well being. The settlers from Delhi followed the Ganges River east and have found suitable land on the shores of the mighty river. I was happy when I received word about the newest city of the Indian nation. Madras is born.

http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads7/IS6.jpg http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads7/IS7.jpg
2030 BC – We have contact! Today I met with an envoy from King Wang Kon of the Koreans. They claim to have settled the lands south of India and that the rest of the continent is rightfully theirs. According to the envoy, India has stolen land that belonged to their ancestors but King Kon is willing to let it slide if we do not settle on any further land. I enquired about Korea’s technological advancements and was told they have made huge progress. India is technologically backwards according to him. He went on to say that the Koreans have invented something called “the Wheel” and that it has made everyone’s life a lot easier. I asked for the secrets of this technology and offered all the gold in my treasury. I was turned down. The envoy was quickly shown the door out.
1425 BC – India is starting to look like a real nation and the recently settled town of Bangalore is prospering. Many were against settling between the two peaks that made up the Sher Mountains. They still remember the stories of earlier explorers being attacked by tigers. Initially, people were afraid to venture out of their huts at night. They were also terrified of the threat that the Koreans made centuries ago. I assured every one that Korea is no King Kong as they make it out to be. They are just like those monkeys that throw twigs at you sitting high up on a mango tree. They are pesky but not a threat.
The Cultural Advisor visited me today and wanted to build temples in all of the Indian cities. She thought it was a good idea to show the world, especially the Koreans, how peaceful and religious we Indians are. He also had an idea for a grand project in Delhi. She called it the Pyramids. I saw sketches and planning information for this project and gave the thumbs up to start construction. The pundits also think that the Pyramids will help build granaries in every Indian city on the continent.
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads7/IS8.jpg
975 BC – India is now an empire. I have appointed governors in all cities as I can’t do it all by myself. Recently, India has welcomed envoys from the Ottomans and the Americans. It has become obvious that Korea does not own all the land south of our nation as they once claimed. I was told that Sultan Osman of the Ottomans was initially cautious about sending an envoy to India. Apparently, the Koreans have told him quite a lot about the backward Indians. Once I got to know Osman, we hit it off. He’s a great leader and we made the first technological trade in the history of India. We offered him the secrets of Alphabets and majority of gold in our treasury and in return we got the secrets of Mysticism and Warrior Code.
Lincoln, the fearless leader of the Americans, also sent an envoy to Delhi in the recent year. He apparently heard about peaceful nation of India from his friend Osman. He was impressed with the culture and technological progression India has made. I sent him a small sample of Spices and Furs as a gift. Maybe he will be interested in a future trade for these items.
The Cultural Advisor made an unannounced visit. She thinks the construction of Pyramids in Delhi should be abandoned and India should focus on building the Great Library instead. After a discussion with the resident pundits, I came to the conclusion that the Great Library is the way to go. According to them the Library will teach us about the marvels of the world and many things still unknown to us. Once I heard that almost no time and resources will be lost due to the switch, I made the decision to start building the Great Library in Delhi.
I also got a visit from the Military Advisor. He was a little worried about the military status of the nation. He pointed out that majority of the cities are not defended and we shouldn’t trust any of our neighbors. I told him that I have faith in the world and we wouldn’t need a military at the moment. I assured him that I will look into providing the cities with the necessary defensive support as soon as possible.

Chapter 3 – World of Wonders
850 BC – I got word that one of our explorers has reached the American city of Philadelphia. Some of the resident pundits have argued that the continent is shared by us Indians and the mighty Koreans. They simply couldn’t come to grip that there are more advanced civilizations out there. I summoned the Foreign Advisor and asked him about starting a diplomatic relationship with our neighbors. He wanted to be the diplomat and spend some time in each neighboring capital. He said it’ll be like a mini vacation considering all the hard work he was doing. I told him I’ll think about it. I put diplomatic relationships on hold for now and wait till we have a better picture of rest of the continent.
690 BC – A messenger came to the palace today with some good news. One of the brave Indian warriors has stumbled on to the small Ottoman town of Uskudar. Initially he thought it was an American city considering its location but was surprised when some cautious Ottoman citizens gave him a halfhearted welcome. Apparently, the Ottomans have had a tough couple of centuries as the original city of Uskudar was destroyed by a very active volcano. The few that were left after the disaster packed up and left the “Valley of Ruins” and built a new city in memory of the old one. They find it a struggle to survive in the new city as it’s close to impossible to grow any food in that mountainous region. Upon hearing about the devastation, I asked the Trade Advisor to make arrangements to send the citizens of Uskudar some much needed food supply.
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads7/IS12.jpg
650 BC – The relationship with Korea has been stressful. King Kon recently sent an envoy to Delhi and complained about Indian religious propaganda in the border cities. I assured the Korean envoy that India has no such intentions. In a meeting with my Cultural Advisor, she informed me that the Korean city of P’yongyang is building the Temple of Artemis. She was concerned about the intentions of the Koreans as P’yongyang is a border city. I wonder if the Koreans are sending a message.
550 BC – It was a glorious year for the Indian nation. The Great Library has finally been finished in Delhi. I made a visit to the magnificent structure recently and found scholars from all over the continent discussing and sharing ideas. The influx of local and foreign scholars to the Great Library has made technological advancements easier and faster. Polytheism was one of the technological advancements as a result of one of the groupthink sessions.
I have ordered that no more resources be spent on research. Many voiced their displeasure with this move. I heard arguments from the Scientific Advisor and the resident pundits that India can not depend on the local and foreign scholars visiting the Great Library for technological knowledge. In the end, they reluctantly agreed with my move.
I was informed that the mysterious Vikings of distant lands have finished The Oracle in the city of Trondheim. The Koreans and Ottomans have now stepped up the race to build the great Temple of Artemis. I have learned that both nations have moved the construction to their respective capitals. I summoned the Foreign Advisor to the palace and discussed the foreign diplomatic situation. It was decided that he will indeed go to each neighboring capital and establish better relations. The Foreign Advisor was happy that he was finally getting a vacation. I gave him a nice sendoff and presented him with a strong donkey for the long and arduous trip. After an hour of steering the poor animal in the wrong direction in the palace courtyard, the Foreign Advisor was off on his journey.
When I heard that we have news about the Foreign Advisor, I cringed. Thankfully, it was good news. He managed to establish Indian embassies in Istanbul, Seoul and New York. The great American leader, Lincoln, even gifted him a horse for the trip back to Delhi. But, my Foreign Advisor has apparently decided to stick to donkeys as it hurts more when he falls from a horse. He has also learned that Istanbul will finish the Temple of Artemis in 28 turns while Seoul l is hopelessly behind at 39 turns. I have told the Cultural Advisor to scrap any plans to build this wonder as India cannot build the great Wonder ahead of its neighbors.
290 BC – Delhi has finished the great wonder Mausoleum of Mausollos. Another magnificent milestone for the Indian nation as the citizens are happy with the progress we have made. I could see the magnificent structure from my palace and it was a sight to see.
My Foreign Advisor is back from his diplomatic mission and comes to visit with many gifts. I heard a rumor that he has also brought several bottles of moonshine back from America although he denied it. He comes with grand plans for further world exploration. He wants to build a Curragh and sail the sea. He is now an avid admirer of Lord McCauley and talks highly of the sage. I gave him permission to go ahead with his plans. I wouldn’t mind my Foreign Advisor in a boat in the middle of the sea.
When I heard that he has built a Curragh in the eastern costal city of Indus in 250 BC, I was perplexed. I never thought he would go through with his attempt to sail the ocean in a vessel slightly bigger than a canoe. I was wrong. When I arrived in Indus on the day of sail, my Foreign Advisor was proudly standing next to his newly built Curragh. When he finally climbed in, some of the locals pushed the vessel into the water and the launch was a success. That was the only successful part of the whole hoopla as the Curragh sunk in the high waters about a mile from the shore. The Foreign Advisor was luckier than the vessel as he was quickly picked up by fishermen in the area. I wouldn’t have minded letting him explore the dark depths of the sea.

http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads7/ISCurragh.jpg
50 BC – Many wonders have been built and many advances have been made in the world but India has had no part in these developments. In 130 BC, there were two wonders built: Temple of Artemis in Istanbul (Ottoman Empire) and the Pyramids in Karakorum (Mongols). The Hanging Gardens of Bursa was built in 110 BC by the Ottomans. I have also just received word that the nation of Spain has built the Colossus in Barcelona.
My Science Advisor came to the palace and he was very concerned about the technological direction India was heading. I was informed that the scholars at the Great Library have failed to discover a new technology in quite a while. Funding for research is non existent and I wondered if the resident pundits were right about not cutting off resources to research new techs. Is the Great Library broken? I have come to know that the majority of scholars were at the Foreign Advisor’s shack, drinking moonshine and listening to his adventures. I screamed obscenities that I thought I never knew. Time to put him on another Curragh.
Back in 370 BC, Ottomans were said to have drafted a new form of government called Monarchy. I was very interested in learning how this govt. worked but Osman refused to share the information. I was amused when I recently found out that neither America nor the Koreans have bribed Osman into giving this information to them. While India, Korea & America were struggling as Despotic kingdoms, Ottomans were thriving as a Monarchy. I summoned the Domestic Advisor and asked her to draft a better form of government. I made sure she had enough funding and made it clear that it be done quickly.

For those who are wondering, I did try to cross the ocean with a Curragh...twice(effects of not playing C3C for a while). :p

GR8Madmax May 14, 2004, 12:24 AM Chapter 4 – Strife in the Monarchy
Orhan stops reading the journal as something out in the streets catches his attention. He stands up on the steps of the museum to get a better look. A man in dirty old clothes was being chased by local policemen. He looked vaguely familiar. Aah, it is Johnny Damon that he reminds me of, Orhan exclaimed. But it couldn’t be him as the great baseball player now plays for the Yankees. They finally catch up with the man and haul him off in the paddy wagon. Orhan lets out a sigh of relief as he was terrified of being kidnapped by such lowlifes. He usually doesn’t have to worry about such things as his personal security is always watching over him. But not today. He chuckled at the thought of them searching high and low inside the palace trying to find him.
Orhan decided to take a break from the journal and decided take a stroll inside the museum. He headed for the section that had the display of a Curragh. He stood in amazement at how small it was. The Foreign Advisor was surely not the sharpest knife in the drawer, he thought. An attempt to cross the vast Indian Ocean in this little thing was simply suicidal. He moved on to the sections that had displays of ancient Korean weaponry. Many of these items were found in a recent dig near Seoul. The swords glistened as he approached them and he can almost touch them. If only there was no glass case to protect them, he thought. Some of the armor that was on display was damaged heavily. To him, it was inconceivable that people actually fought wars wearing this heavy armor. After wandering the Museum for a bit, Orhan settled down in a quiet corner. He was soon lost in the world of his father’s journal.
50 AD – I am now a King and the modest Indian nation that was born on the shores of Ganges is now a Monarchy. I was very reluctant to assume the throne as it doesn’t fit my humble upbringing and the values that I cherish. But, the citizens of India want me as their King, one that will guide them in a world that is still fairly unknown. I will be their pillar of strength, a proponent of peace and unity. There were some that thought Monarchy was not for India and that caused a brief period of anarchy. But my subjects quickly realized that their lives have vastly improved since the switch to Monarchy. It was a time of celebration.
The Great Library has finally become a think-tank again, thanks to the Military Advisor. He offered to take care of the moonshine problem and whatever he did seems to have worked. I was informed that the scholars have come up with a new way to trade commodities – Currency. They have also drawn up an outline for rules and regulations for the citizens of India. We now have Code of Laws.
70 AD – India is one city bigger now. The oppressed citizens of P’yongyang decided that they are better off being a part of India. The Military Advisor briefed me on the situation as King Wang Kon of Korea is steaming about India opening its arms to the “treacherous traitors” of P’yongyang. Initially, King Kon wanted the control of the city returned and threatened retaliation if India refused. He has since backed down from his threat and is willing to negotiate. He wants the entire Indian treasury for P’yongyang. I told him I’ll think about it. I was also informed that the residents of the city have to be protected from the Korean threat. There were reports of the Korean military harassing the citizens that reside in the outskirts of the city. Where is the Foreign Advisor, I wonder? This sticky situation could have been solved with a short pony ride to Seoul.
250 AD – The relationship with Korea is going south. After hearing about the prosperous life of their relatives in P’yongyang, the citizens of Inch’on has decided to join the humble Indian Monarchy. King Kon is steaming and has cut ties with India. He has refused to renew the Right of Passage treaty that we’ve had for ages. I don’t like this one bit. He has also thrown out a friendly warrior that was exploring the region near the Korean city of Wonson.
It was also brought to my attention that Sultan Osman has kicked out another Indian explorer off Ottoman lands. The friendly warrior was merely chatting up one of the cute girls in the country side and it seemed to have stirred things up. I don’t blame the warrior as he didn’t know it was one of Osman’s daughters. I have ordered that all exploration be halted and every one brought back to Delhi. India does not need more enemies.
400 AD - I have given the Military Advisor the necessary resources to build adequate defense in the cities and train enough units to deter any Korean aggression. Indian cities have started to train horsemen and border cities are being well fortified. I was informed that the citizens of P’yongyang are reporting massive Korean troop movement near the area. I have asked more units be sent near the Korean borders. At first, the Indian troops were unorganized and in disarray. I asked the Military Advisor to solve this problem and it was decided that we need a leader to lead the men and women that has sworn to protect the Monarchy. Asoka was the man for the job.
A young man of royal decent, Asoka was a born leader. He was one of the first to join the ranks of the Indian troops. I have decided to make him a General and the decision was supported by the Military Advisor. The troops will need a leader as the humble Indian nation has never experienced war. As the reality of an impending Korean attack is sinking in, the country braces for war.
A messenger arrived at the Royal Palace in Delhi today and had information dealing with the Foreign Advisor! He was apparently in rehab for a while but escaped in the middle of the night. He has stolen a galley near the city of Indus and has set sail in the Indian Ocean. I am worried that he might actually discover a land mass. The last thing India needs at the moment is a drunken Foreign Advisor bringing the message of peace, love and bottled moonshine to foreign lands.

GR8Madmax May 14, 2004, 03:35 PM Chapter 5 – A Nation under Siege
A General is the safeguard of the nation. - Sun Tzu
410 AD – The year started out with a bang as I was informed that the suicidal Foreign Advisor and his galley have found land. He managed to cross the Indian Ocean in the small galley and have made contact with the Carthaginians. Apparently, the galley was destroyed and he was beached. A warrior, who was scouting the coast, found him lying unconscious on the beach, covered with seaweed. Initially, the Carthaginians thought he was a monster who emerged from the depths of the ocean as he couldn’t speak with all the seaweed covering his face. But the Foreign Advisor managed to win over the petrified natives with a good old bottle of moonshine. He also managed to establish an Indian embassy in the capital, Carthage. He was given a tour of the great wall that was under construction in the capital and was told it will be finished in 25 turns. After several days in Carthage, the great Carthaginian leader Hannibal gifted him a new galley and gave him a hearty sendoff.
I have learned that the mysterious Mongols have finished a Statue of Zeus in Ta-Tu. I was also informed that a new form of government is becoming popular in the continent. Republic, as it was called, gives the citizens the right to elect a leader, improve commerce and decrease corruption. The scholars at the Great Library are drafting an improved version of the Republic, one that befits the Indian nation. The final draft and the constitution are expected to be presented for approval in a matter of days. In a meeting with top advisors, minus the Foreign Advisor, we discussed the option of India becoming a Republic. Every one, except the Military Advisor, was for the switch. They all agreed that I will be elected as the Prime Minister as the Indian nation trusts me to lead them in this chaotic world. Chaos, I asked? Other than the minor skirmishes with the barbarian hordes in the beginning, we have had a peaceful existence.
I spoke too soon. It was one of the palace guards that rushed in with the horrifying news – The Koreans have declared war!

GR8Madmax May 15, 2004, 04:31 PM Chapter 5 continued…
Incredulity makes a smart man irrational. Threatened by an Indian border that is not far from his capital and its negative cultural influence on his cities, King Kon decides to go on the offensive. I was briefed about the incursion by my Military Advisor and it was the former Korean city of P’yongyang that was under attack. I was told that the Korean military is pillaging and burning every thing in their path near in the outskirts of the city. They have also rounded up many of the villagers and have transported them back to Korea. Majority of the prisoners were former Korean citizens who rebelled against Seoul not long ago. I have been told that the Koreans intend to make an example of them, starting with a public whipping.
I met with the Military Advisor privately and he assured me that India is very much capable of defending itself. He was adamant about going on the offensive rather than taking up a defensive posture. He was also confident in the abilities of the newly appointed General Asoka. I was not so sure about it and wanted to send an envoy to Seoul. Unfortunately, Wang Kon was not interested in talking peace and even refused to acknowledge the Indian envoy.
Destruction, death, pain & suffering are what results from war and I cringe at the thought of it. I’m just a humble spiritual leader who was put in charge a nation that needed leadership and guidance. I decided to leave all the military planning and details to the Military Advisor. I made him promise that he would do every thing in his power to minimize civilian and troop casualty. It has to be done, I told myself. Our citizens have to be protected. So it was decided – India will hit back.
It did not take long for General Asoka to draw up a viable counter attack plan. The plan was simple – divide and conquer. It was assumed that Korea does not have the resources to defend a counterattack on multiple fronts. Indian attack forces consisted of Horsemen, Swordsmen, Spearmen, and Catapults. The Indian units amassed near P’yongyang and were divided into two armies. General Asoka led the larger army south towards the capital city of Seoul. The smaller army headed east towards Cheju. Korea was under siege.

http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads7/IS24.jpg
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads7/IS25.jpg
420 AD – The Eastern Expedition has reached Cheju and the battle was quick and decisive. The city was hit hard by the Indian catapults and the Koreans simply didn’t have an answer for them. The Indian units just overwhelmed the Korean defense which consisted of a few Spearmen and a couple of Archers. What surprised the troops was the welcoming they got from the Korean citizens when they entered the city center. The Indian troops were treated as liberators and the wounded were given medical attention. I am starting to realize how much the Koreans hate the oppressive government of Wang Kon.
430 AD – Preparations for the attack on Seoul has begun. Troop morale was high, especially after the news of the fall of Cheju had reached them. General Asoka ordered the bombardment of the city defenses and the units garrisoned inside the city. He meanwhile organized the army and had placed himself quite alone, a few paces in front of his Horsemen. He drew his sword and raised it. As the war horn sounded, he led the charge and thus began the biggest battle of the Korean War. The city was well defended with 5 Spearmen and 3 Archers and the Korean catapults bombarded the advancing Indian army every chance they got. The battle was fierce but the Indian army fought with courage and valor. Korean defense was in disarray but they held off the Indian troops for a while. In the end, the superior tactics of the Indian army overwhelmed the Koreans. Indian swords cut through the Korean defense like butter. Seoul has fallen, a crippling blow to Wang Kon and Korea.
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads7/IS26.jpg
450 AD – After the fall of Seoul, General Asoka split up the Southern Expedition into two divisions. One division headed west towards Pusan while the other division was sent further south towards Paegam. Meanwhile, I was informed that the Eastern Expedition has successfully captured the costal city of Taejon. Korea is in trouble.
460 AD – In a meeting with the Cultural Advisor, a proposal to build the Great Wall in Delhi was laid out. In her opinion, the wall will help defend the city if the Koreans ever reached the city steps. The Great Wall would be the first step in building a wall in every city on the continent. After the war with Korea started, the country has been focused mainly on the war efforts. After much deliberation, Delhi has abandoned the build of a coliseum and has started the construction of the Great Wall.
560 AD – Korean cities fell left and right to the advancing Indian armies. They had to defend cities on 3 fronts now and simply weren’t prepared for the Indian attack. Ulsan, the new Korean capital, fell in 470 AD. The cities of Wonsan, Hyangsan, Paegam, Kaesong, Pusan, and Pyongsang (capital) soon fell into Indian hands.
The once promising Korean empire is now down to 3 cities. I asked that all military offensive against Korea be halted. An envoy was sent to the new Korean capital Namp’o with a peace offer. Wang Kon was relieved to end the war and agreed to begin peace talks. A peace treaty was signed in a meeting in the American city of New York soon after. Per the agreement that was signed, control of Korean cities Manp’o & Chonju was transferred over to India. Wang Kon also agreed to pay 5 gold per turn as restitution for the damage Korean troops inflicted on Indian cities and its citizens. The wildfire that threatened to burn the Indian empire has been extinguished.

Chapter 6 – The Indian Republic
580 AD – The peace accord with Korea has been signed and I am now back in Delhi. Even though the trip to New York was on official business, I enjoyed being in the great American city. Prime Minister Lincoln is truly one of the greatest leaders of the world. He was also an integral part in persuading Korea to end war and I thanked him for that. I was very much impressed with the way he ran the country and the freedom enjoyed by his citizens.
I met with my advisors and it was agreed that India will go ahead and become a Republic. The constitution has already been drafted while I was away and I asked the Domestic Advisor to get things rolling. It was Election Day. Will my citizens approve of me and unanimously elect me as their new Prime Minister as many pundits predicted? I should be since I am the only candidate.
The results came in and to my surprise I only got 90% of the votes. According to the Domestic Advisor, many of the nobles were not happy about India becoming a Republic and they voted for General Asoka as a write-in candidate. I was dismayed at the turn of events but was happy to become the Prime Minister of the biggest Republic in the world. Prime Minister Gandhi…it has a nice ring to it.
My first act as the Prime Minister was improving diplomacy with the nations of the world. The galley that changed the outlook of the world has made contact with new nations. In 440 AD, the galley reached the Scandinavian city of Molde. Even though the Vikings welcomed the Foreign Advisor, they were very suspicious of him. A man in Carthaginian clothing claiming to be from the distant nation of India was heavily scrutinized by their leader, Ragnar Lodbrok. In the end, the wit and charm of the Foreign Advisor won him over. An Indian embassy was established in Trondheim, the Viking capital.
In the year 520 AD, the galley had made contact with another passing vessel near a Scandinavian city. Initially, the Foreign Advisor thought it was another Viking fishing vessel but was pleasantly surprised when it turned out to be a Mongol exploration galley. The Indian Foreign Advisor did all of the talking. He shared many great stories with the Mongol explorer. He told about the time he single handedly held off barbarian hoards near Bombay, the escape from the clutches of countless sharks on the day of sail, leading the Indian army to victory near P’yongyang. The poor Mongol sap took the torture in stride. He nodded his head and smiled at the Foreign Advisor as if he could understand what he was saying. The Mongol explorer will never forget the day that he met the nutcase who spoke gibberish.
In 560 AD, India was dealt a minor blow when the Great Wall was built in Carthage. It would not have been of much consequence but for the fact that Delhi would have finished it the next turn. As a result, Delhi ended up building the biggest and most expensive Coliseum in the world. According to my Cultural Advisor, many grand projects have since been started and completed around the world. The very much unknown Spaniards have built the Great Lighthouse in Barcelona and the Carthaginians are building the Sun Tzu’s Art of War in one of their great cities. They seem to be very secretive with this project as they are unwilling to share the technology (Feudalism) required for building it.
740 AD – India has become one of the biggest and wealthiest nations in the world. My approval % has gone up to 95% and the citizens wanted to build me a new Palace in the city of Madras. When I heard about this, I politely declined and the construction was switched to the Knights Templar. Relationships with other nations on the continent have improved although Wang Kon is still furious at me. India has an active trade going with the Ottoman Empire in which they send us Incense and gold in return for Spices and secrets of Literature. We have also recently learned the secrets of Feudalism, Chivalry and Monotheism from the scholars at the Great Library. The Age of Mammoths was here.

GR8Madmax May 17, 2004, 12:49 AM Chapter 7 – Age of Mammoths
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads7/ISwe.gif
770 AD – As I was about to go spend some time at the recently completed Forbidden Palace in the city of Bengal, I received some disturbing news from my Military Advisor. The Knights Templar is rumored to have been established in Madras. But, no one has yet to provide me any proof of the existence of this order of Knights. Some say they are warriors sworn to protect the nation. Others insist that they’re just monks. Either way, they have to be stopped. India doesn’t need to be protected by any such order, I told my Advisor. I have asked him to dig deep into this rumor and find out if there is indeed such an organization in existence.
780 AD – I have received word that the Foreign Advisor and his suicide galley has reached the Spanish port city of Logrono. I never imagined that the day would come when I was proud of my Foreign Advisor. I always thought he was a dunce, the weakest link among my circle of advisors. I expected him to be the owner of donkey courier establishment at this point but he has proven me wrong. I have decided to let him sail the rest of the world before demanding that he come back to Delhi and resume his duties.
I was itching to tell my friend Abe Lincoln about the existence of the 2nd continent and the many nations India has established relationships with. But, I was advised against it due to strategic reasons. I will invite Abe to Delhi one day and we will share many stories but it will have to wait.
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads7/IS36.jpg
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads7/IS37.jpg
800 AD – I was startled by the roar of an elephant outside my Palace and decided to investigate. Was I hallucinating? Is it a dream? I was petrified when I saw the giant beast inside the Palace courtyard. I tried screaming for help but nothing came out. I was too shocked to move and watched the animal staring at me intently. I was shaking uncontrollably or was some one shaking me? Thankfully, it was just my Military Advisor trying to wake me from the state of trance. I quickly glanced down at my pants. Whew! It was not wet.
The idea of using elephants as a weapon in war was not new but no one was ever crazy enough to try it…until now. My Advisor has brought an elephant and its trainer from the distant city of Punjab for a little demonstration. According to him, elephants can be trained to do many things. The trainer then asked the beast to bow down. I was stunned when the elephant listened and bowed down before me. Did I just regain some of the dignity that I lost earlier? I must have since I’m feeling more confident but not confident enough to go any closer to the animal. I was happy with where I was standing. The demonstration continued and the elephant did every thing the trainer asked it to do. Is capturing and training hoards of elephants feasible, I wondered. If it can be accomplished, it will be the best weapon India will have to deter any future enemy attacks. Who would want a War Elephant coming at them during war? I know I wouldn’t. I glanced down at my pants one more time just to make sure it was not wet.
The age of mammoths is here. May the almighty be with the enemy that is foolish enough to challenge India.

Chapter 8 – Fight to the Death
830 AD – It was one of those years that you never forget. I have found out that there is indeed an underground military order in Madras and it has to be addressed. A meeting was arranged with one of the Crusaders in Delhi. When I met privately with him, I asked about their intentions. He made it clear that their sole purpose is to protect the religious citizens of India. Even though I was advised against doing so by my Military Advisor, I have agreed to let this organization continue to exist. I have also granted the Crusaders a rank in the Indian Army under the condition that they will only fight under an Indian General. I have mistaken their intentions after all.
Peace reigns in the world, but for how long? Reports have come in that tension between Spain and Carthage is on the rise. I have been informed that Queen Isabella of Spain has expressed concern about the ever increasing Carthaginian threats. She had confided in my Foreign Advisor during his recent visit to Spain that she is very concerned about being perceived as a weak leader, especially since she is the only female leader in the world. She had also asked for Indian support if any trouble arises over in the eastern continent. I have sent an envoy to Spain and have assured her that India will back Spain but is in no position to send troops overseas. I don’t think any nation would attack a country run by such a beauty. It seems that I have a soft spot for the angelic Queen.
And then it happened – Carthage has declared war on Spain! I immediately sent an envoy to Spain with a message: Dear Isabella, hope you give into what ever General Hannibal wants and end this conflict quickly. You’re in no position to fight. Give him some of your cities if that will quench the warmonger’s thirst for blood. Sign a peace treaty as soon as possible
But Isabella would have none of it. I will fight to the death before I let Hannibal steal my nation, she roared. If India doesn’t want to lend a hand with fending off the aggressors, so be it. The great pacifist Gandhi can go to hell!
I was hurt. Why doesn’t the beautiful Isabella understand the position India is in? We would need bigger ships to transport our troops overseas. The Foreign Advisor stole the only vessel in the Indian Navy, a galley. She will have to understand.

870 AD – My Military Advisor came in with some disturbing news today and I was told that General Hannibal has sent envoys to nations all over the world to secure an alliance against Spain. As I was in the middle of this meeting, I was informed that an envoy has come from Carthage and is requesting an audience. I know what he is here for, I sighed. The envoy did indeed come with an offer of an alliance against Spain and he made it clear that General Hannibal is willing to give upwards of 600 pieces of gold if India willing to go to war against Spain. That much gold would be a huge boost to the Indian treasury. The offer was politely declined and the message was clear. India will not sell out.
890 AD – War still rages in the East and I see no end in sight. To my surprise, Spain is holding off Carthaginian advances and majority of her cities are still intact. Isabella is proving to be a great leader. I was advised that Spain will stand a chance as long as Carthage is unsuccessful in securing any alliances against Isabella. But that will not happen. The Mongols have declared war on Spain!

Chapter 9 – It’s a Mad, Mad World
900 AD – Now that Genghis Khan has tossed his hat in the ring, Spain is in trouble. How can the Mongols justify going to war against the peaceful nation of Spain? I have assembled my advisors and asked for their opinion on the situation. They all agree that there is nothing India can do militarily. Let us just hope Queen Isabella can end the conflict soon.
The East needs to learn how to live peacefully like the nations of the West. After the short outburst several centuries ago, King Wang Kon has been well behaved. He is happy with his Palace in the jungle and his 1-city nation. The Ottomans and Americans were on good terms since the beginning.
It was my Military Advisor that came in with the news – America has declared war on the Ottomans! Has the whole world gone mad?
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads7/IS42.jpg
950 AD – It is rumored that Abe Lincoln got tired of being pushed around by Sultan Osman and decided to do something about it. But no one has yet to provide the exact reason why both nations have gone to war. It was a huge surprise to me since I always thought these two countries had an excellent relationship. I wonder why my friend Abe didn’t mention Osman’s antics. I guess not having a Foreign Advisor around has its drawbacks after all. I better start thinking about bringing him back from his voyage around the world.
I have not lost hope and will try every thing in my power to bring peace and harmony to this world. The Sistine Chapel that was just built in Delhi is proof of that. But how can this magnificent wonder be enjoyed if the world is busy squabbling over petty things? India has no ambition to take over the world or destroy enemies. If we did, Korea would have been squashed a long time ago.
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads7/IS43.jpg
990 AD – War still rages in the World and I see no end in sight. Spain is struggling against two enemies and her cities are being run over by Carthaginian and Mongol forces. It was decided that an Indian envoy will be sent to Carthage. I will plead to General Hannibal on Isabella’s behalf. I must try to reason with him and get him to sign a peace treaty. Surely Carthaginians and Mongols got what they wanted by now.
I have been told by the returning envoy that Hannibal has promised to take my plea under consideration. I was delighted to hear this. Once Carthage signs the treaty, it would be easy to get the Mongols to do the same. My hopes and dreams were dashed by the news that I received next – The Vikings have declared war on Spain!
That was the nail in the coffin and I knew it. But Isabella did not agree. As far as she was concerned, the war is far from over. According to her, every Spanish citizen will fight till the end to defend their homeland. She would not budge from her decision. I was lost.

1020 AD – New York has fallen. The news was shocking. One of the greatest cities that I’ve ever been to is now under Ottoman control. The American capital is now in the city of Boston. America is struggling mightily against the much powerful Ottomans. The outlook looks grim for Abe. Why did Abe Lincoln never ask for my help to fend off the Ottomans? Is it because he knows I would never agree to it when India has an active trade relationship with Sultan Osman? It hurts to think that India is about to lose the only friends it has in this world.
Citizens are concerned. Advisors are grumbling. I am worried. It is becoming obvious that the talk around the country is that I am too soft to lead a nation. While most are happy that India has not been dragged into war, many wonder if I should have been tougher in my stand against nations like Carthage and the Ottoman Empire.
1030 AD – Today my Cultural Advisor came in with more news that I could have done without. When I heard that the Vikings have finished Sun Tzu’s Art of War in Trondheim, I knew Ragnar Lodbrok was only interested in one thing – finishing off the fragile nation of Spain.
1040 AD – All I remember is screaming at the envoy from Istanbul and the rest is fuzzy. How dare he? How dare he ask for my help to eliminate America? What did Osman think of me? Does he think that I’m a backstabbing bastard who will turn on his friends? NEVER! The envoy had to be escorted away when it seemed that I was about to strangle him. I was still shaking.
1070 AD – The time has come. America is down to 4 cities. I can not stand idly watching while the Ottomans run over Abe Lincoln’s cities one by one. I will send an ultimatum to Sultan Osman and demand that he end his aggression against America. India might not be able to protect Spain but we will surely protect the only friend we have on this continent. It was time for Osman to pick. Will it be the easy way or the hard way? It will be the hard way.
The Ottomans have declared war on India!

Chapter 9 – A Conundrum of Epic Proportions
YES! Orhan didn’t realize he shouted that out loud. He did not know why some of the visitors in the museum were looking at him. I hope no one recognized me, he thought. They shouldn’t as I am wearing a cap, he assured himself. But he did not want to take any chances as he didn’t want to be discovered now. The War Elephants were waiting for him. He needed a more secluded area where he can read peacefully. And then it came to him. He slowly got up and headed for one spot where no one would ever bother him. As he cautiously navigated the construction material on the floor, he saw it. The tusks were long and reinforced with armor. The legs were strong enough to crush any thing in its path. It was bigger than any animal he has ever seen. The War Elephant had him in its crosshair, ready to drive the sharp tusks right through him. He now knew how it felt to go up against this mammoth of an animal. That is why he loved them so much. The display was being renovated and no one would ever bother him here. He sat down at the feet of the giant and resumed his adventure through history. Yes, the War Elephants were waiting for him.
1070 AD (cont.) – What a strange world it is. The only nation that is not at war is Korea. Even the great pacifist Gandhi is at war. Will the real warmonger please stand up?
India was not prepared for war. In fact, majority of the Indian units were outdated and the army is in need of massive upgrades. The 2600+ gold in the treasury will barely cover the costs of replacing the 16 Horsemen with War Elephants. This alone will cost 1900+ in gold.
The only reason Korea was easily tamed was due to Wang Kon lacking Iron. The Ottomans are a different beast. They are armed to cause major damage and are already prepared for war. If India goes in with outdated units from the Korean War, we would surely end up with massive casualties. There is only so much the existing War Elephant units can do. I am in a predicament
The information was sensitive and I had to be pulled out of a meeting with the Fruitarians of India. Their concern about vegetables having feelings and cooking live vegetables being cruel will have to be addressed later. When I went into the private war room, my Military Advisor was waiting for me. He had a solution to India’s dilemma – Leonardo’s Workshop.
At the time I gave Leonardo permission to build a workshop in the city of Bangalore, I did not think much of it. I was happy when it was finished this year as the requests for more resources to finish it will finally stop. The guy was just one of those inventors who kept coming up with useless inventions. Who in the right mind thinks humans can fly any way? Well, Leonardo did. I was informed that he has offered to cheaply upgrade Indian army equipment and armor but it will take time. He would need an additional turn to get all the resources to the workshop and do the massive upgrades needed. When I heard about the offer, I was not sure about it as it would mean giving the Ottomans a head start. It might be the decision that wins or loses the war. In the end, it was decided that India will wait 2 turns before we go on the offensive. It was time to hunker down and brace for the Ottoman invasion forces.
General Asoka has finally arrived in Delhi. He has been away training the new War Elephant division and preparing them for battle. In a meeting with him, I raised concerns about the effectiveness of elephants in war. I was relieved when the great General told me that he was more confident now than he ever was. He laid out the plan and wanted to attack Osman from the West. He thinks that India should leave majority of the fighting in the Eastern front to America. We will provide Abe with some military support to keep things even. I was sure my friend Abe would be delighted when he hears about the plan. Together we will bring Osman down to his knees.
My Military Advisor was confident that General Asoka will lead us to victory. According to him, the Korean War made the General a hero but the Ottoman War will make him a legend. I did not share his enthusiasm about the General and was actually concerned. Why was I concerned about him leading India to victory? I am not sure but I hid my concern effectively. I have decided to take an active role in the planning and execution of this war.
I was just informed that one of the War Elephant divisions dominated in a skirmish against a group of enemy Longbowmen in the eastern front. Upon hearing this, the nation exploded into celebration. According to the resident pundits, the Golden Age of our great nation has begun. But will it bring glory or doom? I do not know. I do know one thing…it has begun.

Chapter 10 – Friend or Foe?
1080 AD – The estimates for unit upgrades & re-training were presented to me today for approval. For a total cost of around 1500 gold, India now had a modern army that can go up against the mightiest of enemies. Catapults were refitted and upgraded to Trebuchets. The Horsemen in the army was also given new training. A decision was made to leave the Swordsmen on the front lines in case the Ottomans attack while the Indian army was most vulnerable. Their armor upgrade will have to wait.
1090 AD – I posed this question to my Military Advisor - Why did Sultan Osman decide not the attack the previous turn? His answer was that the Ottomans will probably attempt to eliminate the Americans before they come after India. I was not so sure about that. I do not want to underestimate the enemy. I think Osman is up to something.
The upgraded Indian army was deployed to the eastern and western borders. General Asoka’s plan will require American help and I was sure my friend Abe will stick to his word. Abe Lincoln has assured me that he will not rest until he has control of his fallen cities, especially New York. That is what I wanted to hear. If America can keep Osman busy in the east, Indian forces can sweep in from the west and bring the Ottomans down to their knees. They took New York but we will sack Istanbul, I told Abe. Once the Ottoman capital falls, Osman will realize he has lost and will give up. I like this military planning. I am glad I decided to take an active role in this war.
One of the Palace aides came in with the news – We have captured Denizli! Even though it was not a huge loss to the Ottomans, it was a morale boost to the Indian troops. The Western Expedition led by General Asoka has dealt its first blow. The border city simply did not stand a chance. The Indian Trebuchets pounded the city and then War Elephants pounced on any thing resembling an enemy soldier. The Ottoman defense was nonexistent. The power of the mammoths was evident.
1100 AD – The war is going well. Another smaller Ottoman town has fallen and Ottomans still don’t have an answer for the mighty War Elephants. The Ottoman troops at Kafa didn’t know what hit them. The defense in the city had expected Trebuchet bombardment as a precursor to an Indian attack. But when the War Elephants charged their positions, the smart ones simply dropped their weapons and ran. What was left of the Ottoman defense fell soon after to the Indian swords. The city of Kafa now belonged to India.
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads7/IS58.jpg
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads7/IS59.jpg
1110 AD – The great General Asoka has made a huge tactical error. The Eastern Expedition that was supposed to provide support to the Americans on the eastern front was grounded near the American city of Chicago. The Trebuchets in the army needed roads to cross the mountainous terrain. There were no roads outside Chicago and the Eastern Expedition was stuck in the middle of nowhere. I was disappointed.
I had a solution. I ordered the Military Advisor to leave the Trebuchets behind and attack the western coastal city of Bolu as originally planned. The Indian War Elephants displayed pure strength and determination as they went on the attack in the battle for Bolu. With no defensive or artillery support, the War Elephants single handedly took the city down. The War Elephants continue to impress. I am also impressed with my military tactical skills.
I was eating dinner when the Military Advisor interrupted me with the news – America has signed a peace treaty with the Ottomans!
I was stunned. It was the last thing I expected from Abe Lincoln. Why Abe, why? America was the reason India is at war with the Ottomans. Now he decides to save his rear and leave India hanging? I threw the dinner plate across the room and it shattered in a million pieces, leaving a streak of food stain on the wall. I was miffed.
A delegate was immediately sent to Boston, the American capital. I demanded an answer from Abe Lincoln. Are you a friend or a foe? Abe’s response was that his army is too weak to continue fighting. America simply didn’t have the resources to fend off the Ottoman advances. I was not impressed and informed him that India has cut ties with America.

GR8Madmax May 20, 2004, 03:11 PM Chapter 11 – Hell, Fire & Brimstone
1130 AD – After the fall of Kafa, General Asoka decided to split up the Western Expedition. An army consisting of 51 units headed for the city of Izmit while the remaining 41 units headed for Mugla. With the Eastern Expedition grounded for the most part, he wanted to make sure the Ottomans still had to defend on multiple fronts. The split army would then be brought together for the eventual assaults on Edrine and Istanbul.
This morning the city of Izmit got a wakeup call but not the kind you would like. The large Indian force was outside the city walls and ready for the offensive. The General gave the 20 Trebuchets the order to pound the city. Initially, the bombardment was ineffective due to the city walls. An adjustment was made to the trajectory and the bombardment resumed. The second round was more effective. Troops inside the walls ran for cover. The General took the opportunity to send in the Swordsmen which turned out to be a big mistake. The defensive forces were ready for the attack. Indian swords fell to the Pikemen that was defending the city.
The strategy had to be changed. The Swordsmen retreated as the War Elephants were sent in. It was a battle for the ages. The Ottoman defense proved that the mammoths were not invincible. When the initial War Elephant forces were brought down by the enemy defense, more were sent in. Eventually it was the brute power and numbers that brought the city down. The battlefield claimed too many Indian troops for my taste. I was not happy with General Asoka.

1140 AD – When the Military Advisor woke me up in the middle of the night, I knew it was bad news. I could tell he was having trouble finding the right words. Finally he gave me the news - The Spanish are no more. It was General Hannibal, he added.
I closed me eyes. For a second I wished it was just a nightmare and I would wake up from it at any time now. But it was a wish that will not come true. I asked him about Queen Isabella. He simply shook his head and that was all I wanted to know. When he was about to go into detail, I raised my arm and motioned him to leave. I needed to be alone. I did not sleep for days. I decided to go spend some time in the Forbidden Palace. I needed to think.
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads7/IS65.jpg
1160 AD – The last few decades saw the fall of Sinop and Uskudar to the Western Expedition. The Indian troops faced the usual Ottoman defense of Pikemen and Medieval Infantry in both cities but were no match for the War Elephants with Trebuchet support. The split armies are now headed to the walled city of Edrine.
The Eastern Expedition was finally making some progress. Workers from all over the country were brought in and a road was built outside Chicago so that the Trebuchets can be moved into a city where they will be better protected. America offered no help with the construction of the roads.
1170 AD – The split forces of Western Expedition were supposed to merge before the attack on the city of Edrine but the forces from Sinop reached the city first. General Asoka made the decision to attack the city without the full army. Edrine was under siege.
The decision to attack early was a mistake. The walled city was very well defended and Indian artillery was ineffective for the most part. It was up to the Indian War Elephants to break through the Ottoman defense and the mammoths were up for the task. In the end, too many of them died in the attempt to capture the city. Edrine has fallen but I am starting to question General Asoka’s tactics.
1180 AD - When the Eastern Expedition captured the former American city of Miami in 1140 AD from the Ottomans, it was just considered a minor victory. For reasons unknown, the Ottomans attempted to recapture Miami for the next 40 years. Around 20 Ottoman units and 8 Indian units have died in the battles for Miami. I just don’t understand Sultan Osman’s obsession with Miami that is surrounded by jungles, mountains and marshes.
Reinforcements were sent in to Miami from Bolu. Walls were also rush built in the city as the Indian defensive troops were facing Ottoman counterattacks every turn. In an epic battle that lasted 4 turns, Indian troops manage to deter all Ottoman offensives on the city.

1190 AD – The Western Expedition is finally one big army. The force consists of Swordsmen and War Elephants supported by 42 Trebuchets. It has one target – Istanbul.
1200 AD – Madras has fallen! The shock resonated throughout the country. How could this happen to one of the greatest cities of the Indian empire? They attacked in the middle of the night, I was told. A lone Medieval Infantry was dropped off on the shores near Madras by an Ottoman galley. The attack was well planned. The Musketman did not expect an attack so far from the Ottoman border and did not stand a chance. One of the greatest Indian cities was now under Ottoman control.
I was furious when I found out that the city had only one defender. According to the Military Advisor, General Asoka removed majority of forces from all border cites to fight in the Ottoman war. I still don’t understand why he needed to take defenders out of cities when he had an army bigger than any other in the world. I am starting to think General Asoka is only concerned about his glory. For the first time I thought of replacing General Asoka. But that would be a difficult task considering the popularity of the General.
1210 AD – I was relieved when I heard that Madras was back under Indian control. I put the Military Advisor in charge of the counterattack and he did a masterful job with the minimal forces he had at his disposal. But the damage was already done. The population of Madras was brutalized in the short period that the Ottomans had control of it.
It was time to end the war. I was headed to the former Ottoman city of Edrine to begin peace talks. I will not let citizens of another Indian city go through what the people of Madras had to endure. Osman is surely willing to talk by now.
Wake up Mr. Osman. The first shot went right over the Istanbul Palace. Once the trajectory was adjusted, General Asoka ordered them to fire again. It was a direct hit. Part of the Palace façade collapsed. The artillery bombardment sent the whole city under cover. The artillery continued the attack throughout the day. Istanbul was under siege.
When the bombardment stopped, smoke was billowing from the city. As the troops came closer, they saw the unbelievable sight. The Palace of Istanbul was on fire! The fire was spreading and there was nothing they could do. The great city of Istanbul was going up in flames before their eyes.

Just a heads up to those reading the story:
I only had 12 days (starting from the day college ended) to play, write, edit screeshots & post the story. I will be going out of the country tomorrow (24th) on vacation and won't be back till July 15th. So, if I'm unable to post rest of the story before I leave, I'll definitely post the remaining when I'm back.

GR8Madmax May 24, 2004, 02:33 AM Chapter 12 – The Aftermath
1210 AD (cont.) – The entire world is in shock. All that is left of Istanbul is still smoldering. How could General Asoka burn one of the great cities down to the rubble? I have ordered an immediate investigation into the disaster. General Asoka has been relieved of his duties and will have to answer to a military tribunal.
I had hoped to commence peace talks with Sultan Osman at Edrine but he is feared dead in the disaster. The rumor was spreading regarding the royal family and their death at the hands of the Indian army. It is not known who is in charge of the country but I have sent an envoy to Izmit, the new Ottoman capital. The envoy never got to Izmit and barely escaped with his life as the citizens of the city wanted his head. The Ottoman Empire is in chaos.
With General Asoka awaiting trial in an undisclosed location, the Indian army was in trouble. The troops have lost the only leader they ever knew. Bewildered by the turn of events, I have decided not to appoint a new General right away. I am very leery of appointing another General who is might only interested in his own glory. I, Mahatma Gandhi, will take control of the Western Expedition.
1250 AD – After several attempts at getting the Ottomans to surrender, the war still wages on. The country is near anarchy after the loss of its leader. Unfazed by the disaster in Istanbul, the Indian army fights on under my leadership. The unorganized Ottoman army attempted to stop the Indian offensive on the city of Bursa but fails. The city and the great wonder Hanging Gardens is now under Indian control.
In the battle for Bursa, I notice a young man who showed exceptional leadership under duress. His name was Chandragupta. He had every thing that one wants in a great leader. I have put him in charge of a division of War Elephants – a War Elephant Army. I have also learned that the great Indian city of Calcutta has finished Copernicus’ Observatory and many are hailing it as a great wonder of the world.
1260 AD – This is a one of those years that one can not forget. To my disappointment, resident pundits have informed me that the golden age of India is probably over. But I am not dismayed by this. If the Ottomans refuse to lay down their weapons, I will have no choice and will have to conquer the whole nation. I will not risk having a renegade state so close to India. Some of my advisors have expressed concern with my decision but I have decided not to change it. I have ordered new offensives on the cities of Konya and New York. The Indian troops marched through the enemy as if they were nonexistent. In the end, both cities fell without much bloodshed. One of my favorite cites in the world, New York, was under Indian control.
1265 AD – The Western Expedition is on the steps of the Ottoman capital, Iznik. Instead of attacking the city right away, I have ordered that all roads in and out of the city be cut off from rest of the nation. Iznik is surrounded by Indian War Elephants. Let any brave enemy come fight the mammoths out in the battlefield.
1270 AD – I was inspecting the condition of my troops outside the city of Iznik when a messenger came with some news. Since he claimed to have both bad news and good news, I asked for the bad news first. I was informed that the former Ottoman city of Denizli has revolted and its citizens have taken control the city from the Indian military forces. I did not show how angry I was but rather asked for the good news. I was told that Indian researchers have finally obtained the secrets of Military Tradition and the first Cavalry unit has already finished its training in the barracks of Punjab.
The famous barracks of Punjab that trained the first War Elephant now has trained the so called Cavalry. When I was told about this new unit, I had no idea what a Cavalry was but did not show it at the time. It was later in a meeting with the Military Advisor that I found out about the capabilities of this new mounted horse unit. From what I have heard, I was very impressed with this new unit. If what I have heard is true, I have a feeling the Cavalry will decide a lot of future battles. My advisor has informed me that these newly trained units will be joining the Western Expedition in the near future.
1275 AD – It did not take me long to put plans in motion to re-capture the city of Denizli. It only took one War Elephant unit to scare the bejesus out of the rebels and the city was back under Indian control. The Western Expedition continues its march through Ottoman cities. The last city to fall to the force is Aydin. I was also informed that the people of India want to build the Heroic Epic and the Military Academy. I have asked the Cultural Advisor to look into the possibility of building both as soon as possible.
1295 AD – The last few decades saw the fall of Seattle, Antalya and Ankara. The Ottoman Empire is crumbling. The inevitable seems to be closer than ever but the Ottomans are refusing to give up.
My Military Advisor wanted me to meet with one of the veterans of Korean and Ottoman war and I agreed to meet with him. His name was Shivaji. I saw the potential that my advisor saw in the grizzled veteran. He was truly a military man and had excellent tactical skills. He was indeed a great leader like my advisor said. I have decided to put him in charge of a Cavalry force. India now has a Cavalry Army.
1300 AD – It was time to finally end the Ottoman War. I have made plans for the final offensive on the two remaining cities. Iznik, the Ottoman capital, was virtually a ghost town by now. Majority of the citizens have fled the city because of the impending invasion. I have given the troops the order to advance on Iznik. As the War Elephants rumbled through the streets of the city, those that were left watched from the safety of their homes. No one dared to jeer the triumphant Indian forces.
1310 AD – After the Heroic Epic was built in Lahore in 1305, the Indian troops seem to be fighting with more confidence. I rejoiced when I heard that Delhi has finished the construction of JS Bach’s Cathedral. I am realizing that being in control of the Indian troops has its drawbacks. The state of the country has regressed and I have yet to see any of the magnificent wonders that my great nation has built. I have made arrangements to go back to the Indian capital very soon.
1315 AD – It seems that General Asoka never gave any of his troops a chance to show what they can do. The Indian military has brought new leaders to the front under my guidance. The newest protégé that has gained popularity is a young soldier known as Porus. He showed excellent leadership qualities in a battle near the Ottoman city of Salonika. The great Porus will be in charge of a Cavalry Army.
1320 AD – The end is here. What Sultan Osman started over two centuries ago, I will end now. Salonika, the last Ottoman city, is under siege. Indian Cavalry saw its first battle as they charged the city. The few Ottoman defensive units that were left were sliced through like turkey on Thanksgiving Day. The city soon fell to the Indian forces. The once mighty Ottoman Empire is no more.

GR8Madmax May 24, 2004, 10:58 AM Chapter 13 – The Trial of the Millennium
1320 AD (cont.) – The world is finally at peace. I was happy to be back in Delhi after the long and grueling war. Once I was back, I was informed that a Senate of Advisors was formed while I was away to run the nation. The Senate immediately expressed concern about the way the last war was fought. They thought that I had commanded more power that I should have. I expressed displeasure with this new development and was annoyed that the biggest Republic in the world did not recognize the fact that the Ottoman war would not have been so efficiently fought if I had not taken over control of the troops. My tactical skills were evident if they simply look at the number of casualties both sides suffered since I took over the Indian forces. While the Ottomans lost 44 units, India only lost 9 under my control.
In the end, I had to concede that a better form of the Republic has to be implemented and that the powers will be delegated between different branches of the government. I was given an outline of the new constitution that has already been finished. I was surprised to see how much power the different branches of government would have. I had given the citizens of India the right to vote unlike every other Republic in the world at the time but now they are demanding more personal and economic freedom. I was not happy.
1330 AD – India is now a Democracy. The election was just a formality as I had no opponents. With 100% of the votes, I was elected as the President of the most powerful nation in the world.
1385 AD – As I attended the inaugural ceremony at the brand new Military Academy in Bombay, I only had one thing in mind – the trial of General Asoka. A military tribunal has already been assembled in the city of Punjab and he will be tried for war crimes. The entire nation is awaiting the trial of one of its heroes.
1400 AD – The private courtroom was ready. As a fragile looking Asoka was led into the courtroom, the room was suddenly filled with muffled whispers. It was the first time Asoka has been publicly seen since he was reprimanded. As the prosecution and defense made the final preparations, the 7-member panel entered the room. The jury that consisted entirely of military officers will decide the fate of the former General.
The prosecution painted a picture of a power hungry General Asoka who was only interested in his own glory. They provided with many witnesses that attested to the fact that Asoka continued the artillery bombardment long after the city defenses was weakened. According to the evidence provided, it was an artillery shell that hit the barracks that started the great fire. The biggest piece of evidence the prosecution had was about to be revealed.
As Chandragupta walked into the courtroom, many in the room looked puzzled. The great leader was about to be sworn as a witness.
Prosecutor: “Do you swear to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, so help you God?”
Gupta: “I do.”
Prosecutor: “Please state your name and position in the military for the record.”
Gupta: “Chandragupta, commander of the War Elephant Army.”
Prosecutor: “Were you present at the battle for Istanbul.”
Gupta: “Yes, I was.”
Prosecutor: “What was your rank in the military at the time?”
Gupta: “I was a Captain in the Western Expedition under General Asoka.”
Prosecutor: “Please tell the court what happened in the battle for Istanbul after artillery bombardment stopped.”
Gupta: “After the shelling stopped, the General told the troops to stand down and went into the city. He took a select few with him as he was worried that there were still remnants of the Ottoman military inside the city. When we got to the Palace of Istanbul, it was severely damaged but was still standing. We saw palace guards scurrying about trying to rescue those inside the Palace. The General then grabbed a piece of wood from one of the destroyed buildings did the unthinkable. He set the wood on fire and threw it inside the Palace. Before we knew what to think, the Palace was on fire.”
Prosecutor: “You did not try to stop him?”
Gupta: “We were too shocked to even flinch. We were under the impression that the mission was to rescue the royal family from the Palace.”
Prosecutor: “Sultan Osman and his family were still inside when the Palace was set on fire?”
Gupta: “Yes.”
The courtroom was in shock. The defense counsel knew it was over. It would be impossible to refute Chandragupta’s testimony. They still went ahead with their defense. They contended that Asoka was simply following orders. The defense blamed every one they can think of for the disaster. Even I, the President of India, was not spared from accusations. But the defense failed to provide any proof to their claims.
The verdict was in. The 7-man jury found Asoka guilty of war crimes and crimes against humanity. The sentence was handed down – life in prison. The trial that many labeled the Trial of the Millennium was over. The former General has been moved to a military prison in an undisclosed location. I was glad that justice was handed down. Asoka deserved the punishment he got.

GR8Madmax May 24, 2004, 11:28 AM Chapter 14 – Conflict in the East
1455 AD – The last 25+ years saw the Indian nation build 3 great wonders and a small wonder. The year 1430 was a great year in terms of cultural achievement. Shakespeare’s Theater was built in the city of Calcutta and the military HQ (Pentagon) has been completed in Lahore. In the year 1440, Magellan’s Voyage was built in the coastal city of Kolhapur. In 1455 Sir Isaac Newton founded a University in Delhi. Students and researchers from all over the world are attending this institution. The rest of the world is in awe of the cultural achievements of India.
1480 AD – My Foreign Advisor is finally back from his voyage around the world. As he docked his galley in the coastal city of Indus, he saw the amazing sight. The harbor was full of people. He then saw the doctors that were gathered on the harbor and was petrified. Apparently he thought they were there to apprehend him and send him to a mental institution. He thought of turning the galley around but didn’t have the strength to row the vessel any more. As he got out of the galley, a cheer went up from the crowd. He finally realized that the crowd was there to welcome him. He did not know how much of a celebrity he has become. The paramedics gave him a quick checkup and he was whisked away soon after.
1485 AD – As the horse carriage approached, I could see the Foreign Advisor attempting to adjust his hair. Unfortunately, he had no hair. As he stepped out of the carriage, I welcomed him back from his long, arduous journey. As always, he came bearing many gifts. One of the items he brought with him was a fish he caught off the coast. It was the best raw fish he has eaten according to him. I quickly got one of the aides to gather all the “gifts” and take them away. We had many things to discuss, I told him.
Later inn a private meeting with the advisor, I was told that the eastern continent is on the verge of conflict. Apparently, the dispute is between the Carthaginians and the Mongols. They are both claiming land formerly held by the Spanish Empire and neither is willing to back down. I was told that if India doesn’t get involved, the entire eastern continent will be soon at war.
After a discussion with my Military Advisor, it was decided that India will send Peace Troops over to keep peace and order between the Carthaginians and the Mongols. Since there is no declaration of war, it was decided that I do not need the permission of the Congress.
1500 AD – A total of 37 Frigates and Galleons set sail this morning and headed for Carthage. The Peace Troops consisted mostly of Cavalry and a couple of Armies. The force was big enough to surround any city that needed to be defended from any invading forces.
1510 AD – Today I met with a group of activists who called themselves Communists. They put forth an idea for a new form of government in which property is owned by the community as a whole and every one enjoys equal social and economic status. It was also mentioned that the Communist Party will have majority of control over the government. The more they talked about the ideas that they had, the more interesting it got. In the end, I sent them away. The people of India were happy with Democracy.
1515 AD – The storm had just passed over the Indian fleet carrying the Peace Troops. The soldiers sought cover under what ever they could find when the rain came and majority had since dozed off. It was a quiet night in the middle of the Pacific Ocean and the sky was dark from the passing clouds. No one saw the pirates approaching in the dead of the night. The Privateer blasted away at the Frigates that protected the fleet and the thundering noise woke up the entire ocean. The sailors scurried quickly and manned the closest cannon they could find. It was over before it started. The 10+ Frigates protecting the fleet quickly made a coral habitat out of the Privateer. The soldiers did not sleep during the rest of the voyage.
1520 AD – I was informed by the Military Advisor that the Indian Naval fleet carrying the Peace Troops has docked off the coast of Carthage. I have decided that I well go to the eastern continent and be a mediator. I will sit with General Hannibal and Genghis Khan and try to bring an end to the conflict. I will try to spread the word of a peaceful coexistence.

GR8Madmax May 24, 2004, 11:36 AM Chapter 15 – The Truth Will Set You Free
(Present day)
It was in the afternoon and Orhan has been reading the journal all day. He put the journal aside and lied down at the feet of the War Elephant display. Orhan dozed off and didn’t see him approach. When Orhan woke up startled by a noise, it was too late. The intruder had him in his clutches. The teenager tried to wiggle free but the man was too strong. Orhan was stunned when he saw the intruder’s face. It was the same man the cops dragged away in the paddy wagon earlier in the day. The same dirty old clothes, long hair and beard that have not been cut in ages. The smell of alcohol dominated the man’s clothing.
The man had his hands over Orhan’s mouth. The boy finally realized that there was no use struggling. He was not going to get away. The psycho finds him on the one day that he decided to sneak away from the Presidential Palace. What luck, he thought. Realizing the boy had stopped struggling, he removed his hand from Orhan’s mouth and motioned the boy to keep quiet. He spoke in a hoarse voice.
Man: “Orhan, my name is Lord McCauley and I thought I’d never find you. Gandhi had you stashed away in that Presidential Palace of his. I’ve been looking for you for ages.”
Orhan (still terrified): “H..h.how do you know my name?”
McCauley: “I am the knower of all things. I’m Lord McCauley.”
Orhan (confused): “Drunk is what you are. Let me go. There are personal security guards that will be back to get me any time now.”
McCauley (smiling): “I know you snuck away from the Palace. I’ve been watching you. I was on my way to talk to you when the damn cops ran after me like I stole their donuts or something.”
Orhan: “I don’t want to hear what ever you have to say. I have to go.”
McCauley (miffed): “You WILL hear what I have to say!”
Orhan settled down and looked intently at McCauley. He knew he would never get away if he tried to run and no one would hear him scream in this closed off section of the museum.
McCauley: “You asked me how I know your name. Let me tell you a story.
The war between India and the Ottoman Empire was being waged in what we know as South India. Half of the Ottoman cities have already fallen to the Western Expedition led by General Asoka. The massive force was about to capture Istanbul when Gandhi sent an envoy to Istanbul and demanded that the Ottoman Empire surrender immediately. The offer was simple. Surrender and what is left of the Empire will be allowed to exist as an Indian State. The Sultan will still have control over his cities and will only answer to Gandhi.
A furious Osman rejected the offer and Gandhi never expected this. Gandhi had expected that Osman will surrender once Istanbul falls. That is why he went to the city of Edrine, expecting to sign a peace treaty. Once Gandhi learned that the Ottomans had no intention to surrender, he was enraged. He was secretly escorted to the city of Istanbul where he gave the order. ‘Burn every thing down. Don’t let any thing remain standing’ were his words. Gandhi had found a way to kill two birds with one stone. He was always afraid of General Asoka and was concerned about the General becoming a political opponent. He bought off the few soldiers that witnessed the incident and promised them high rankings in the Indian military. But, General Asoka could not be bought. You have read what happened next.”
Orhan: “I was right. You are a nutcase.”
McCauley (chuckling): “It is nothing new. Many have said that I’m a drunk, delusional who likes to make things up. But what if I am telling the truth?”
McCauley continues…
McCauley: “I know you have always had a question on your mind, your mother. You never had the courage to ask the great Mahatma Gandhi the question. Do you want to know the truth? Wait, I’m a drunk who likes to make things up. I am out of here.”
As McCauley gets up to leave, Orhan speaks.
Orhan: “I want to know.”
McCauley: “Even though it has never been confirmed, the royal family was indeed killed in the great Istanbul fire. Gandhi made sure of it as he personally set the fire to the Istanbul Palace. As the Palace was burning, one of the Palace aides ran out with a bundle in his hand. The aide was on fire and she fell on the feet of the Indian exploratory force that included General Asoka, Gandhi and a few other select soldiers. It was Gandhi that removed the bundle from the aide that lay dead on the ground. It was a baby boy wrapped in the bundle of wet clothes. The baby had a small gold bracelet with a name – Orhan. Your name is not Orhan Gandhi. It is Orhan Gazi, son of Sultan Osman Gazi.”
-0blivion- May 24, 2004, 12:39 PM Once again, i have to reitarate what a great story this is. :yeah:
The picture editing is superb, the humour is there, and the twists and turns in a real game make it all the more satisfying. I thank you for taking your time to write this story for our enjoyment.

GR8Madmax May 24, 2004, 01:33 PM Chapter 16 – I Bring You Peace
1520 AD – The Peace Troops have landed in Carthage. General Hannibal had organized a welcoming party for the troops. As Gandhi exited one of the ships along with troops, the Carthaginians sensed something was wrong. It was too late when they realized that it was an invasion force that they were there to welcome. Before the Carthaginians knew what hit them, the capital city of Carthage was surrounded and all roads to and from the city was cut off. Carthage was under siege.
1540 AD – Men with Secret Police shirts walked in to the buildings housing the Congressional and Senate in Delhi and ordered every one out. The Indian Democracy was efficiently shut down. These men took down the Indian flag and put another one up in its place. The red flag signaled the arrival of the Communist Party. India is now a Communist State.
As the Indian invasion force set up barracks and organized the army outside Carthage, General Hannibal scrambled to get his troops organized. He had sent majority of his forces to the Mongol border to deter any plans Genghis Khan might have to invade his country. But he never thought in his wildest dreams that Gandhi is the one that will invade his nation. He has also had just acquired the technology required to train Cavalry but his Cavalry force was miniscule compared to the force that is here to tear his precious land into pieces.
1555 AD – The first Carthaginian city has fallen. The defensive units in the city put up a good fight but had no chance against the Artillery/Cavalry combination of the Indians. The residents of Leptis Magna watched in horror as the invasion force set the whole city on fire. This was just a preview of things to come.
As the rest of the world watched helplessly, the Indian forces burned Carthaginian cities one by one. General Hannibal was a prisoner of his own city and he knew the end will come soon. Even though the Indian forces had the capital city of Carthage surrounded, the city was never attacked. Gandhi wanted Hannibal to witness the destruction of Carthage.
1560 AD – A hungry tiger never passes on a free meal and Genghis Khan was no different. In a not so surprising move, the Mongols declare war on Carthage! Gandhi knew there was trouble between the Carthaginians and the Mongols but he never expected the Mongols to jump in. This will only make things easier, Gandhi thought.
1590 AD – The Carthaginian cities that have been destroyed are too many to count. The Indian forces left none standing per Gandhi’s order. Smoke and rubble arise from the ground where magnificent buildings once stood.
The Indian forces approached the former Spanish city of Barcelona. Majority of Carthaginian citizens have fled the city when they heard about the invading Indian forces. As the Indian troops entered the city, they were greeted as liberators by the oppressed Spanish citizens. Gandhi looked around the city and then gave the troops the order – torch it.
1600 AD – The Indian forces have the world shaking in their boots. It was Genghis Khan that sent an envoy to Gandhi. He wants a Mutual Protection Pact. Gandhi laughed when he heard about the request. No one has ever seen him laugh like that. There was something in those eyes that most people have never seen. You could see anger, pain & revenge in those eyes. Gandhi was a man on a mission. He decided that a Right of Passage agreement with the Mongols will be useful.
1615 AD – Ragnar Lodbrok did not know what Gandhi’s intentions were once he was done with Carthage. The once mighty Carthaginian Empire is now down to a few cities. Ragnar was also worried about the Indian forces trespassing on his territory. An emissary was sent to Gandhi with a message = remove your forces from Viking territories or declare war. Gandhi chuckled when he heard about the demand. He sent the emissary back with an answer – you asked for it. India declares war on Scandinavia!
1620 AD – As Gandhi entered the Palace in Carthage, he was closely guarded by Indian troops. He found a very much beaten Hannibal cowered in one of the bedrooms. You should have listened to my plea to leave Spain alone, said Gandhi. You thought I would forget, didn’t you? Gandhi never forgets. Have a nice trip to the afterlife, Hannibal. With those words Gandhi exited the magnificent structure. The Palace in Carthage was soon on fire.
1640 AD – With only a few minor Carthaginian towns left, Gandhi turns his attention on the Vikings. Stockholm soon falls to the massive invasion force that seems very much unstoppable by now. The massive army has the Viking capital in sights.
1650 AD – Gandhi assumed control of an Army and was on the steps of the Viking capital, Trondheim. The battle was fierce. Gandhi sent in War Elephants one after another and they were mowed down by the Riflemen guarding the city. In the end, Gandhi ordered his Cavalry Army to charge the city. It was a battle neither the Vikings nor the Indians will ever forget. When it was all said and done, the Viking capital went up in flames like rest of the cities that came under Indian attack. Gandhi has yet to spare a single city.
1685 AD – The Vikings are down to one city. Ragnar did not know when to turn the other way, Gandhi thought. Stavanger, the last Viking city, was already under attack. It won’t be long before the city is captured. As Gandhi pondered his next move, he got the news – The Vikings are done!
1695 AD – The Carthaginians are now down to their last city, lol. It seems that Gandhi will have the last laugh. I will laugh out loud when I hear that the last Carthaginian city has gone up in flames, Gandhi thought. He did not have to wait long for that news – Carthage is no more!
1700 AD – The Mongol troops were returning home to their families after a long war with Carthage. In the middle of the way, the unthinkable happened. There were Indian forces blocking the roads. The Indian forces have set up the ambush and were waiting for them. They knew it was over. The Mongol troops were slaughtered by the Indian forces and did not even stand a chance. Genghis Khan was celebrating his victory over the Carthaginians when he got the news – India has declared war on Mongolia.
1710 AD – Gandhi’s old friend Abe has sent an envoy and have requested a Mutual Protection Pact. He also wants 3 gold per turn in return for it. The request was politely denied. An envoy was sent to Namp’o, the Korean capital. The message was short – Prepare for war!
The Korean capital was quickly captured but Wang Kon had another city close to where Istanbul once stood. Sariwon, the last Korean city was also under attack shortly after but the Spearman that was defending the city held Indian forces at bay. Before it was said and done, 4 Cavalry units fell to a single Spearman. But Sariwon will soon fall. Korea is history, a history that Gandhi is writing!
In one of the great battles of recent times, Indian forces manage to kill 2 great Mongol leaders.
1715 AD – Abe Lincoln has seen enough. He knew his time would come but was not willing to wait any longer. He gathered up the few troops that he had left and declared war on India!
1740 AD – All Abe had to throw at the mighty Gandhi were Medieval Infantry and Spearmen. The American forces and cities were quickly mowed down. The last American city to fall was Chicago. America was done! Gandhi rejoiced when he heard the news. He no longer had to worry about another threat on the western continent as the entire land mass was now under Indian control.

GR8Madmax May 24, 2004, 01:51 PM Chapter 17 – A New Beginning
1750 AD – The news sent a chill down Gandhi’s spine. Asoka has been freed from the prison in Manp’o by the Crusaders. There were only a select few who know about the location of the former General. Gandhi had stored the information along with some sensitive military plans and his journal in his bedroom. He couldn’t comprehend how the Crusaders found out about General Asoka. I will deal with him when I get back to Delhi, Gandhi thought.
1760 AD – The Mongols have put up a valiant fight but the Indian invasion force was too big. Genghis Khan watched as his cities were burned one by one. Karakorum, Ta-Tu, Dalandzadgad and Darhan all fell to the hands of the evil Gandhi this year. Only one Mongol city now stands between Gandhi and conquest – Madrid.
1772 AD - Every thing that has a beginning has an end. As Gandhi’s army approached the city of Madrid, he was reminded of Queen Isabella. How ironic that the last Mongol city is the former Spanish capital, he thought. He decided that he will not destroy the great city of Madrid but rather make it a memorial to Queen Isabella. The Indian forces had the city surrounded. As Gandhi’s forces entered the city victorious, he was expecting to Spanish citizens in the city. He was shocked when it was angry groups of Mongols that greeted his force.
Back in India, the 3 remaining Crusaders led Asoka to Delhi. It was a bloodless coup. With a Cavalry force of 100+ and growing, Asoka had all the backing he needed to take the country back from the Communist Party. As he entered the Palace in Delhi, he was greeted by Orhan Garzi. India will start over under a new leader, Asoka.
News about the coup has reached Gandhi and he knew his reign was over. He had a military force of over 200+ units but had no ships to cross the Pacific Ocean. He was stuck in a vast wasteland, haunted by the memories of the cities the he destroyed and the lives that he took. He was stuck in a city full of hostile Mongols. Gandhi was stuck in hell.
Thus ends the story of Orhan Garzi and Mahatma Gandhi.

GR8Madmax May 24, 2004, 01:56 PM Thanks Oblivion for the kind words.
As I mentioned earlier, I only had 12 days to play, write and post the game. In the end, I simply ran out of time. I couldn't spend nearly the time I wanted with the 2nd half of the story.
I got the idea for the story after reading all the 'I got nuked by Gandhi' posts. I only had two characters in mind when I started (Gandhi and Orhan). The game gave me the rest. The game also gave me a better ending than the one I originally had planned.
Thanks to all that read the story and those who posted feedback. I have a flight to catch in a couple of hours as I'm headed to spend the summer in India. ;)

Shammurabi May 25, 2004, 06:11 AM 'Definitely not a story teller'?
Rubbish!
This is the best story I've read on this forum, bar none.
Enjoy your holiday!
Rik Meleet May 25, 2004, 10:20 AM This is one of the most enjoyable stories recently posted here. 'Definitely not a story teller'? Please change that to: 'Born to tell stories'.
Can't wait till you decide to write another. If you do, please post a link in this thread; I'm keeping this subscription.
Enjoy your Holiday.
blix May 25, 2004, 09:17 PM This is an amazing story, you're a natural born story teller. Maybe be even the next Jules Verne.
das May 26, 2004, 11:38 AM EXCELLENT STORY!!! Very good finish too, glad Lord McCauley managed to get a part as well.
GR8Madmax Jul 16, 2004, 12:28 AM Thanks for the feedback every one but I was disappointed that I had to rush the 2nd half of the story and didn't have time to focus on a lot of things.
MjM Jul 16, 2004, 10:58 AM This is great, I hope you do more stories like this :goodjob:
drwsince1987 Jul 16, 2004, 12:08 PM How did u always seem to have the big bulture projects and TONS of soldiers to fight with?

As far as wonders are concerned, I was dominating the tech research. I was so far ahead, the Great Library was fairly useless. I also did not trade contacts once the 2nd continent was discovered. The AI research was further crippled since they couldn't trade with each other for a long time. I also used Palace and wonders as prebuilds to complete most of the wonders. A few of my core cities were building nothing but cultural buildings and wonders. Keep in mind that India is a Religious civ.
# of units: Early in the game, it is mostly planning ahead, fighting on my terms and the use of artillery. Effective use of artillery alone will win you games. If you look at the casualty list from the wars, I did not lose a lot of units when I had artillery support. I only lost one or two units in the Korean War. I also made sure the unit that I picked to attack has an advantage (attack value vs. defend value) over the defending enemy.
Another reason is that my empire is barely defended. The defense during the wars was 1 defensive unit per border city. I made sure (except when Ottomans took Madras) that the enemy never got near my cities.
Towards the end my empire was too big and the economy was unstoppable under Communism. I think I was building 10 Cavalry per turn.
MSTK Jul 16, 2004, 06:34 PM Really, you are kicking AI...butt. I fear the wrath of chieftess.
This is an awesome story! Too bad it's almost over.

It is over sadly....

But we will see eachother again. Won't we, Gandalf?
RoboPig Aug 10, 2004, 10:16 PM Wow! this is one of the best stories I've ever read. You should join the demogame. If people over there read this story you will easily win the Minister of War elections. The registry link is in my sig.
T-Money Aug 10, 2004, 11:58 PM GR8Madmax, are you planning to do another story game? Because this is the best story in the forum, along with DaftPanzer's Celtic Peacekeepers.
North King Aug 11, 2004, 11:22 AM I can't believe I didn't read this thoroughly before. Excellent job and a great story!

Thanks Gulliver. I've never really gotten into DGs or SGs probably because I'm not that good when it comes to playing the game.
GR8Madmax, are you planning to do another story game? Because this is the best story in the forum, along with DaftPanzer's Celtic Peacekeepers.
Thanks T-Money. I have been thinking of another story, maybe even a sequel, but I'm not sure what civ to play as. It'll also be on Emperor if I write another one, my first ever game at that level. Maybe one of these days I'll come up with something interesting.
I can't believe I didn't read this thoroughly before. Excellent job and a great story!
Thanks for the kind words North King.
odintheking Aug 13, 2004, 08:30 PM This is even better than a lot of the novels I have read, :D you are my favorite author now, This is the first story I've read here at CFC, I just hope all of em are this good. BTW, where can I get those city graphics, they're bada...:cooool:
T-Money Aug 13, 2004, 08:59 PM You can get the graphics here (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=38672)
If you scroll down a bit he has the zip files in the above link.
odintheking Aug 14, 2004, 12:28 PM How do you put them in-game?
T-Money Aug 15, 2004, 12:47 AM You have to go to your C:\Infogrames\Civilization III\Art\Cities folder and backup all the old files. Then just installl the new graphics into the same folder and click "Yes to All" when WinZip/WinAce asks you if you want to replace all files.
GR8Madmax Aug 15, 2004, 12:55 AM Like T-Money detailed, it's easy to change graphics. The zip file normally comes with a readme.txt file and it should also have installation instructions. Be sure to backup the old files you're replacing in case you want to go back to the old graphics.
T-Money Aug 15, 2004, 01:27 AM Man, this story is good. I read it again today. I gotta say, these stories written by people on Monarch-plus levels have really helped me improve my game at that level, especially this one. Among hundreds of other small details, I never before knew the importance of using artillery. Now I'm winning conquest almost every time on Regent, domination quite easily on Monarch, end even one once on Emperor witha Domination (although that was mostly luck). I just want to thank everybody who writes these stories, because apart from being quite good reading material, they help out relatively new players like me who needed a push to get beyond Regent.
odintheking Aug 15, 2004, 12:45 PM I've had Civ 3 for 2 years, and I barely started playing "warlord" now, and I'm terrible at it,
T-Money Aug 15, 2004, 08:57 PM You'll get better. Just give it time.
T-Money Aug 17, 2004, 07:06 AM Sorry to bring up a dead thread, but where did you get the irrigatio graphics?
EDIT: nvm.
GR8Madmax Apr 10, 2006, 08:34 PM Surprised this thread is still around. I thought it was purged or archived. :)
Mirc Apr 11, 2006, 05:19 AM Well, it wasn't around before you bumped it. It was very deep in this forum.
