Variant Requirements:
1. May not research Protestantism until 1527. Starting in 1527, must research Protestantism. Once learned, establish a Protestant Monarchy. Once in that government, must start building the Luther's Theses wonder.
2. Eliminate all foreign presence in the British Islands by 1513.
3. At least one-half of the treasure units returned home must come from the privateering expeditions of Sir Francis Drake against the Spanish colonies in the New World beginning no later than 1568.
The game lasts 150 turns, 1490-1640-from the reign of Henry VII to the last decade of the reign of Charles I.
The "Sceptred Isle"

Background
It is the year 1490. Henry VII, the first Tudor, occupies the throne of England, after defeating Richard III at Bosworth in 1485. His successor, Henry VIII, will be born in 1491. Henry VII restored a government which had been weakened by the dynastic Wars of the Roses, and promoted foreign trade, making England rich and powerful.
Henry VIII inherited in 1509 a kingdom isolated from the rest of Europe and poor in natural resources. It was protected on three sides by water, but to the north lived the Scots, an ancient enemy allied with France, England’s bitter rival. When Henry VIII became king he set out to expand England’s power.
Henry VIII was eager for confrontation. In 1513 he led a victorious campaign against the French; in retaliation the Scots declared war on England. Henry’s forces repelled the Scots at the Battle of Flodden Field where the king of Scotland, James IV, was killed and the last threat to the English domination of the island ended.
Our challenge is to build on this foundation and make England the wealthiest nation in Europe. To accomplish this task we shall have to develop our commercial and seafaring traits to the fullest. A primary contribution to our victory will come from the pirate fleet of Sir Francis Drake. To quote from Microsoft Encarta 2004:
"To Spaniards, he was the pirate El Draque, and if they had captured him, he would have met a pirate's fate. But there were pirates and pirates in those days. Long engaged in a cold war with Spain (and finally a hot one), Queen Elizabeth had in Drake a freebooter who brought home loot, confounded Spanish forces, kept the enemy off balance, and taught him painful lessons. And since Drake was a private adventurer, Elizabeth could respond to outraged Spanish authorities that Drake had no license from her—though there is evidence that she backed him financially. No other single captain did more to humble the Spanish Empire and lay the foundation for England's mastery of the high seas."

DeceasedHorse May 14, 2004, 02:21 PM Checking in. I think that our biggest problem is the fact that our pirate unit carries nationality marking, sort of ruining the point of the unit. It isn't possible to fight a cold war in civ, not when we are this close to our enemies. We will need a strong fleet at all times, especially once we have to declare on France, because of all the amphibious units running around.

Now the good news:
I'll will be out of town until next Wednesday with no game and no 'net access. Skip requested, Captains.
6thGenTexan May 15, 2004, 04:50 PM With our Captain attending Court for a few days, First Officer 6thGen will prepare our expiditions.
There are 3 key dates we need to watch.
1. In 1513, 23 years out, we need to remove the French presence form out north.
2. In 1527, 37 years out, we need to start on Protestantism and become a Protestant Monarcy and start building Luther's Thesis.
3. By 1568, 78 years out, we need to start raiding Spannish Galleons returning treasure from New world.
1. I'll start with sending our LB and MDI over to Ireland to get some expierience against that barb camp. The horses will be connected and Knights will be build for our attack on Edinburgh.
2. I will start research on Magnetism first. I'll try to time it so we have completed the tech by 1527. Someone else will have PP for us to trade for.
3. Starting Research on Magnetism will allow us to switch our prebuild, Sistine's, to Magellan's for the free ships and it is in line to our UU. If you are wondering why we must start raiding the Spanish now, read this:
In 1567 [Drake] commanded a ship in a slave-trading expedition of his kinsman, John Hawkins. On the voyage the Spanish attacked and destroyed all but three of the English vessels. In 1572, with two ships and 73 men, Drake set out on the first of his famous marauding expeditions. He took the town of Nombre de Dios on the Isthmus of Panama, captured a ship in the harbor of Cartagena, burned Portobelo, crossed and recrossed the isthmus, and captured three mule trains bearing 30 tons of silver.
(from historychannel.com)
I say we have until 1572 to get our first Galleon.
Other Items:
John Cabot found the New World for England in 1597. I won't wait that long. One Caravel will head across the Atlantic with a pike, our settler and the explorer.
I have played this as the Mayans, but that is not much help here. I'm at work and will not get to open the game until late tonight. If someone can answer these questions and add any additions thoughts and comments I'm all ears.
What ship is available with Magnetism and do our caravels upgrade to them?
How do the stats of a mustketman compare to our pikes?
Is our Catholic Monarchy pop or cash rush?

DeceasedHorse May 15, 2004, 10:08 PM Musketmen are 3.4.1 and have amphibious assualt. They are rather over priced, at 60 shields a piece, twice that of a pike. Note that MDI and Swiss Mercs are also ampibious. Catholic Monarchy uses gold rushing. Magnatism enables the Carrack, which in this scenerio is an upgraded caravel 2.3.5 if I remember right.
DeceasedHorse May 15, 2004, 10:09 PM Musketmen are 3.4.1 and have amphibious assualt. They are rather over priced, at 60 shields a piece, twice that of a pike. Note that MDI and are also ampibious. Doc Tsiolkovski May 16, 2004, 05:45 AM IIRC, Magellans will trigger your GA, are you sure you want that in 4CC?
6thGenTexan May 16, 2004, 01:17 PM Thanks for the "heads up" Doc. That is something up for consideration. I have started my turns and have reached the coast of NE. Going by WM information, Spain has sent their first explorer/settler to the Carolinas. We will need another navel base in the Carribean for our raiding of the Treasure Fleet. That settler may have to wait until we have our short conflict with France.
6thGenTexan May 17, 2004, 03:40 PM Key Item to watch: If half of our VP are from Spanish trasure, we need to bring back 18 for 18000 of our 35000VP.
1490AD-0 In The Beginning.....
Starting build orders:
London--->Magellan's Pre-build....largest city but needs shields
York, Bristol--->Barracks for Vets v. France....both pulling in 5 shields now with some room to improve
Plymouth--->worker....to help develope England
Dublin--> Temple....need to start somewhere
London gets a taxman for 0 Lux and 60% Science. Magnetism in 19 @ -8GPT.
One worker starts roading on starting square SW of London, other 2 head to horse.
Cabot heading West with setter/pike/explorer.
Pike/LB/MDI arrive in Dublin.
Other 2 Caravels head N and S fog busting for map sales.
1491AD-1 Horses connected. Fog Busting nets 25g in map sales which allows us to increase science. Mis-click and move the MP from Dublin. Instead of reloading and retrading the maps (very time consuming but profitable), I trade +1 food for a sceintist.
1492AD-2 Scratch 2 Barbs but no promotion. :( See the New World (five years ahead of history). Maps bring in 24g.
1493AD-3 The Irish are no longer in Ireland, 25g but no promotions. Meet the Iroquois. Bump science to Max since we will be getting some big money for the contact. WM and contacts bring in 285g. Salamanca has no cutlure, is at size 1, near the Great Lakes and there are no other towns.
1494AD-4 Drop off colonists near Maine, 2 fish in one border expanse. 24g on the Map trades. Spain had a bigger map. They have reached the Carolinas. Spend 160g to complete the 2 barracks.
1495AD-5 Barracks start Knights. Plymouth starts Caravel or Carrack prebuild. Jamestown founded and starts a harbor. 53g on the WM.
IBT Spain is the first to make demands, WM+33g. Not ready to say no so they get it.
1496AD-6 Our offensive stack is assembling near Edinburgh. Pick up 48g in WM trades.
1497AD-7 Gain another 57g for our WM.
1498AD-8 Our Explorer has reached the Pacific Ocean and one Caravel has to turn back after failin gto find a Northern Passage. I spy what may be the Mayan border. Only get 14g for our WM. Most people are low on gold. If they cannot pay full value, I buy their map for 1-2g to keep ours complete.
1499AD-9 Meet the Mayans and sell around some WM and contact for 94g.
IBT Maya want us out of their waters. That enables me to take their WM and 86g for another contactat. They did not have that money at the end of my turn.
1500AD-10 Contact the Aztecs. They have not even met their neighbors the Mayan. :crazyeye: Trades some contacts and pick up 161g and THE WM and 161g. I have not traded the Indians to all the Europeans due to lack of money. Some have a WM a few years old because I did not want to take GPT for the WM. Two Caravels are foritified outside of London blocking the English Channel. The Third is returning fron the Northern Passage and the fourth is looking for Indians in Central America.
The Exploreer is heading North along the Pacific coast. The Aztecs were exploring the desert southwest while the Iroquois were cutting straight across the continent. Heading North would net the best map gains. Just watch out for barbs.
If I recall correctly, we are 3 turns from Magnetism. Check and see if it is possible to get Naval Ordnance before turning to Protestantism. We have the World's Wealth as long a we keep ahead of the exploring.
The Dutch have settled New Amsterdam NE of Jamestown near Labrador/Newfoundland.
The Spanis have settled Hispaniola in Georgia.
The Portuguese have settled Rio de Jinero in North Africa.
The French may have reached North America by now but have not settled.
I'm heading out to personally explore the lower gulf coast of Texas for myself tomorrow. I'll return with a report on May 26 so if the game gets back to me, I'll need to be skipped.

Sir Bugsy May 17, 2004, 03:49 PM Have fun Tex! The Riviera is nice this time of year. :D
DeceasedHorse May 18, 2004, 10:22 AM Will get on it after school, once I get v. 1.15 reinstalled.
DeceasedHorse May 19, 2004, 12:19 AM Argh! Avast me maties! I'll keelhaul you scurvy dogs!
Now that that is out of my system, it is time to get down to buisness.
Preturn: Swap Plymouth to worker. Need to get our homeland developed ASAP.
Turn 1: Plymouth builds worker, starts barracks (mined hill comes on line, boosting it spt). Our intrepid explorers continue to map the high seas, and explorer the farthest depths of this new continent. Our European neighbors pay well for this knowledge.
Turn 2: Magnetism comes in, and it will take London forever (56 turns) to build Magellan's. Time can be cut down to 37 turns or so if we borrow the mine from Plymouth, even less once one of London's unimproved grass tiles gets mined. Plymouth will get back up to speed once the other hill in its radius gets mined. At 100% science, we could get Naval Ordance in 16 turns, which would be in time to beat the deadline, but we would be running a -37 gpt defecit. Running science @ 70% would get us ordanance in 23 turns, or in 1525, 2 years to spare. The other problem is that everyone except for the French already have Magnetism; so no way to sell the tech nor to block a wonder cascade. We cannot start Protestanism without the printing press tech, and no one is willing to sell us the tech @ 4th for less than our entire treasury (608 gold) and 8 gpt. I have no real choice according to the rules but to start on printing press, and hope that the French buy the tech soon (hopefully not magnatism, though!) and arrange a trade then.
IBT: The Seminoles, having somehow acquired gunpowder and naval artillery, attack one of our caravels, but we in. The Portuguese start Magellan's. Dublin riots, hire a taxman.
Turn 3: Scratch that; hire a scientest in Dublin and swap the taxman in London to scientist, cutting research time by three turns. The French have, of course, bought both magnetism and printing press. But, lucky for us, the Spanish DO NOT have printing press! Buy printing press from the Dutch for 6gpt and 600 gold (not giving the Portuguese any more money). Sell Printing press to the Spanish for 11 gpt, wines, wm, and 30 gold, and this also has the side effect of totally consuming spain's income. Check tech again: I think we can sustain research on naval ordanance and get it in time only if we make 13 gold a turn in map sales a turn, and that sum will go up as maintinance costs and unit fees go up, down as pop grows. Or we could go for gunpowder or banking, both of which are cheaper to research currently. Gunpowder should be avoided for as long as possible in order to avoid the craptacular muskateer unit. I'll take the gamble and try and get ordance in time; let's hope our map sales keep us afloat. The wines allow me to fire the specialist in London.
IBT: Everyone else starts on Magellan's.
Turn 4: Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum. Map sales still turning a profit.
Turn 5: Sell alphabet to the Aztecs for 30 gold and their map. Selling their map around gets us up to 96 gold. MM London, stealing tiles from other cities, Magellan's due in 28.
Turn 6: Yo ho, yo ho
IBT: The Portuguese finish Sistine's in Lisbon, everyone cascades around to Leo's and Magellans.
Turn 7: Someone has discovered gunpowder; can't tell who, but it's probably not the Portuguese because they are broke. Maybe the Dutch?
Turn 8: Bristol builds Knight, starts MDI
Turn 9: York builds knight, starts colonist.
Turn 10: Another mine completes, cutting another two turns off Magellan's.ARGH MATEYS! (http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads7/Elizabeth_of_the_English,_1510_AD.SAV)
Sir Bugsy May 19, 2004, 10:25 AM I've got it, but it will probably be until late tomorrow before I get it done.
Sounds like I need to prepare to kick the French out of Scotland.
Sir Bugsy May 20, 2004, 04:23 PM Pre-flight – review variant restrictions. Looks like I have three years to kick the French out of the British Isles. At least I have a decent sized force to do it with. Good DH has left them all fortified. Compared to France we have an average military. Let’s hope they aren’t all in Edinburgh.
We are really light on defense in Ireland. Change the build from a temple to a pike.
Portugal and Spain have gunpowder, but won’t trade it. Bump science up to 90%, naval ordnance due in 11.
We’re also light in York. Wake up the pike and move into York. We’ll start the attack next turn.
IBT – Spain declares war on Portugal.
Dublin: pike=>carrack (50)
French complete Leo’s.
1. 1511 AD – Sell our WM around for 51G. Declare on France and move our troops into French Scotland.
IBT – Dublin is attacked amphibiously by a French MDI, we lose a pike. MDI are amphibious!
Spanish build Cop’s
2. 1512 AD - @ Edinburgh: 4/4 knight retreats from 4/4 pike (-2hp)
4/4 knight kills 3/3 pike (-1hp)
3/3 MDI killed by 3/3 pike (-1hp)
3/3 LB kills 2/3 pike (redlined)
The 2/4 pike remains. This is not going to be a cake walk.
Almost run into a a stack of barbs with our explorer in present day Columbia.
Shift a pike from York to Bristol.
Drop science 10%. NO due in 9.
We’re probably going to be attacked at Bristol, Dublin, or Plymouth.
IBT – Dublin again. Our pike defeats the redlined MDI (-1hp)
York: Colonist=> colonist
Bristol: MDI=> MDI
Plymouth: Barracks=>carrack
3. 1513 AD – This looks rough at Edinburgh. I have a ¾ knight, a 1/3 LB, and a ¼ knight attacking a 4/4 pike let’s see. Attack with 3/4 knight and retreat after inflicting 2 hp loss. A healthy vet pike pops to the top. We will be regrouping. We also won’t be kicking the French out this year. Move the two knights out to heal. Move the fresh MDI in to guard the treb.
Lux needs to go to 10% and science drops 10%.
The Iroquois have a worker for sale. Use CoL to purchase their worker & WM. Get another 25G sell our WM around.
To be continued....
Sir Bugsy May 20, 2004, 06:15 PM 4. 1514 AD – The walls of Edinburgh are destroyed by our Treb. There’s some good news.
Stick our colonist and a pike in a carrack and head for the new world.
Meet the Incans. Sell them alphabet for WM & 39G. Turn around and sell our WM with it’s new information for 138G .
The Incans haven’t met anyone. The only profitable deal selling contact is with Portugal, 2 gpt & 32G. I think I will hold off a turn or two. I have everyone’s money right now.
Crank science up to 90%. Spend 124G hurrying the MDI in Bristol. Hopefully the French won’t rebuild the wall in Edinburgh.
IBT – Bristol: MDI=> MDI
5. 1515 AD – Move the fresh troops to the front. Portugal has banking. I pull the Charis trick and bring science to 0%. See if we can get a two-fer. No… Spain has banking also. The Dutch don’t have anything. :wallbash: No two-fers.
Sell contact with Incans to Portugal for 2gpt & 32G, to Aztecs for WM & 6G. Same deal with Mayans and Dutch Sell the Incans contact with the French for 23G & WM. That’s all the money available in the world. We’ll see if the Iroquois and Spanish can come up with some scratch next turn. If they get it, it will be a gift from someone else.
6. 1516 AD – Treb takes off a hp at Edinburgh. 4/4 MDI kills 4/4 pike (redlined). A healthy pike rises to the top. 4/4 MDI flawlessly kills 4/4 pike. Move the healed knights to the front.
Find the straits of Magellan.
:wallbash: Portugal and the Netherlands have Naval Ordnance. Spain doesn’t. Sell Spain contact with Incans for 3g & TM. Very devalued.
Buy N.O. from the Dutch for 4gpt, 120G & WM. (Don’t need to give anything more to Portugal.)
Sell N.O. to Spain for Gunpowder, worker & WM. Could have got banking, but if we’re gonna be pirates, we’ll need saltpeter. Good news, if we can ever capture Edinburgh, there’s saltpeter on the hill directly south of the city.
Since we have to start researching Protestantism in 1527, there is no sense researching anything right now. Science goes to zero.
IBT – William demands WM & 4G. You puke! Put him in our book! Now cross out his name! :mwaha: Their military is about the same size as ours. Since I’m a little busy trying to capture Edinburgh at the moment, I give into the sleaze bag.
York: colonist=> colonist
7. 1517 AD – Some fellow over in Germany named Martin Luther has some grievances with the Catholic Church.
@ Edinburgh: Treb takes a HP off the defender. Yes, looks like only one!
4/4 knight kills ¾ pike (redlined) and the city finally falls. The city comes complete with five ticked off French looking Scotsmen, one slave, a barracks, a market and a court. Start a colonist.
Sail through the straits of Magellan and into the Pacific. This voyage will be very profitable. Our WM is worth a lot of money each turn. This time I get 54G.
We can get peace with France now, but I hold off in case of a flip. We presently can get a pretty good deal for peace.
IBT – Dublin is captured. So much for throwing the French out of the British Isles.
8. 1518 AD – Load a knight and a MDI on a carvel to recapture Dublin. Offload a pike/settler at the mouth of the St. Lawrence River.
Start hooking up the saltpeter.
Hold off sell the WM this time around, since Henry is being stingy.
Get a worker and WM from the Incans for CoL.
Have to bump lux up 10% due to unhappy people.
9. 1519 AD – Dublin is recaptured. MM cities to get Magellan’s in 10.
Make 16G sell WM. Iroquois have another worker, but that would make two, and I think that’s an exploit.
We can make peace with France and get Banking, 57G, 7GPT & WM for Naval Ordnance. I’ll hold off and let Pokiste make the call. I don’t like the idea of Edinburgh flipping.
IBT – Bristol: MDI=> Navigation School
10. 1520 AD – Sailing, working, sleeping.
After action report: There is a colonist on the northern tip of Scotland ready to found a city. The settler/pike pair is in position in the New World to form a colony.
Peace is the next player’s call. I think we need to make sure we don’t lose Edinburgh first.

Bede May 23, 2004, 03:23 PM Fantastic....
Pokiste May 23, 2004, 04:11 PM It takes awfully lot of time to dig into age of piracy. And surprise-surprise: Portugal capital is on Madeira. Nice choice.
And as I understood point number 2 in variant rules list is completed. Point number 1 is during my watch.
And some draft proposal to the House of Lords decision makers concerning point number 3.
*Our main colony ?belt? will be in Canada. If we are quick we can get gold in Black Hills and Furs. I have temptation to build naval base to Haiti and Cuba.
*Future naval campaign against Spain. Let?s do it like German navy did in WWII against England. With fast ships we can patrol in Pyrenees peninsula waters and intercept their treasure units without need to have permanent naval presence in Caribbean Sea.
*I wrote about temptation to build colonies in Haiti and Cuba. But at the moment there is no potential treasure building Spain colony at all. To get half VP-s from Spain treasures maybe we should let them build some colonies to Caribbean islands?
Gobibear rules say that half VP-s must come from piracy without mentioning any nations. If it is so I see no problems ;)
Preturn AD 1520 Her we go. And let?s give peace a chance. My fellow Scots people: calm down and join with your distilleries our alcohol and troubles export network.
And for 168g, WM and peace we get banking to. And for 6gpt and 230g and WM sell to France Ordonance. I saw no reason to hold it back.
Move pikeman to Edinburg.
1521 (1) York Colonist-musket. Upgrade on caravel to carrack.
Build Yorktown in Canada. Starts temple.
Build Port Royal in Scotland. We make now 53 gpt.
IT France longbow near Yorktown.
1522 (2) One senior naval officer (we will not mention his name her) is keelhauled, because he forgot to sell our WM around.
Carrack with colonist and pike starts toward Caribbean islands. Arrival due 6 turns.
Meet France settler in Brazil.
WM sales bring in 53g.
IT zzz
1523 (3) Peaceful England works and sails.
Portugal has metallurgy. We can?t afford it. 20g from WM sales
IT tzzzzzz
1524 (4) Edinburgh colonist-colonist. We make some gold selling WM
IT zzzzz
1525 (5)
York pike-pike
IT tzzzzz
1526 (6)
Carrack sails to new world. Spain has professional armies.
IT We meet huge Dutch fleet (3 frigates). If we compare, then our military is weak.
1527 (7)
Buy wine from Spain for saltpeter.
Start research Protestantism at 90% (13 turns).
IT Dutch fleet shows flag.
1528 (8)
Our first frigate leaves dock at Plymouth. Starts harbor.
Use frigate to block Gibraltar straits and slow down Dutch movement.
Edinburgh colonist-harbor.
Pike and colonist land in Haiti.
IT zzzz
1529 (9)
Things started to happen.
We build Norfolk in Haiti. It is corrupt.
London builds Magellan?s voyage and GA starts. London starts frigate.
Dutch has Protestantism.
I will not stop research, as I understood from Gobibear rules we must research it. Not buy....We will have it in 7 turns. It?s means revolution during GA. What a bad luck....
And there is possibility to make twofer buying Prof.armies from Portugal for Iron, WM and 408 gold. And possibly sell it to Dutch for metallurgy. Deal will leave 240 to treasury what is money we need to pay for 7 turns remaining research. But there is very high possibility, that this profitable deal will delay our Protestantism research.
Reef a sails. Anchor. We stop her because legal and moral problem. Problem is next: can we delay our Protestantism research because so we can save unknown number turns of GA we will waste otherwise during revolution. I have feeling that this can be counted as exploit and is against Gobibear?s variant rule number two. But I?m not sure, so I leave it open for discussion.
And I think that, after we make decision is my watch over and it?s Bede?s turn to take command in the bridge.
Best regards

May not research Protestantism until 1527. Starting in 1527, must research Protestantism. Once learned, establish a Protestant Monarchy. Once in that government, must start building the Luther's Theses wonder.
Doesn't say anything about pacing research. I'm inclined to delay research until end of GA.
Opinions from other captains, please.
Gobi Bear May 24, 2004, 09:29 AM I'm okay with you guys taking it slow on Protestantism ... but you can't switch and research anything else!
Bede May 24, 2004, 10:34 AM Aye, aye Sir Gobi Bear (Honorary Gentlemen Freebooter)
Bede May 24, 2004, 11:10 AM Got it

Bede May 24, 2004, 03:36 PM 1529AD
Captain Bede takes command
First step is to slow research pace on Protestanism to tiem end of GA with regime change
Shift some citizens around to get turns off Navigation School.
Look around for a good site for a Luther prebuild and find we don't have one. So make a strategic decision that since Luther was a German Protestant and England will be High Church Anglican that the theses is a good project for the Calvinists in Edinburgh.
Pay a courtesy call on our fellow future Protestant WIlliam of Orange and sign an RoP. He has already had his revelation towards Puritanism and is in anarchy on his way to a Protestant Moanrchy. The Netherlands will become our firm ally against the grasping Spanish
Aztecs start Temple of the Sun
T1 1530
Colonists and pike set out for New World aiming for treasueless island off the coast of Spanish Florida .Colonist in New World follws St Lawrence valley towards Gitchigummee.
Build an embassy with our friends the Iroquois.
Renew the iron deal with Henry of Portugal as he is keeping Spain busy.
Peddle maps around for groats.
Drake's caravel in the Pacific heads for Magellan's Strait
Anarchy has addled William as enters the Spanish Portugese war on the side of Spain. He also starts Luthers95.
T2 1531
Our South Maerican explorer is trapped by the Maya city blocking Panama and runs into Aruac tribesmen
Carrack from Bristol sets sail for Ivory Coast.
Aztecs start Temple of Moon.
Our blockade of the English Channel has holes in it as Dutch frigate slips by on way to Portugal
T3 1532
Sailing to Africa and the New World.
Iroquois come calling wanting maps so we trade even up.
Navigation School completes in Bristol.
Edinburgh finishes harbor and the canny Scots start a bank
T4 1533
Sailing, trekking and building banks in the home island
Iroquois join the Dutch against the Portugese.
T5 1534
Dutch beat us to Newfoundland
Sell Henry horses for 15g and 5gpt and hope he keeps the Spanish busy
T6 1535
Drop colonist and knight at mouth of St Lawrence
Found Toronto at head of Great Lakes.
Start trapper camp in Yorktown
Henry the Navigator wants us to betray our friends the Iroquois. Sell him an RoP and get his territory map plus 12g,
Carib galleys attack our carrack in the Caribbean and sink promoting the carrack
T7 1536
Found Cobh in west Ireland..
Land colonist and pike on Ivory Coast
T8 1537
Found Williamsburg at the mouth of the St Lawrence
Found Kingston on Caribbean isle
Found Freetown on the Ivory Coast for ivory and slaves
Spanish take Madeira from Portugal. Capitol is now in Cape Verde
T9 1539
Banks complete and our income takes a 66% jump.
T10 1540
Not much to report. Pick up explorer marooned on coast of S America and take him to Mississippi Valley.
Freetown needs its harbor rushed. There is a trapper camp acitve at Yorktown and a carrack waiting delivery of the first shipment of fine beaver from Canada. The Iroquois are moving through Sault Ste Marie to the south of Lake Superior. The north shore (the Norwegian Riviera) is still open for settlement. There is a colonist on hand in Jamestown to claim a spot NW of Toronto. Discovered that colonists cannot build in forests, but there is a grassland next to another furs site just off the lake. King Henry VIII will be ready to divorce Kathereine of Aragorn in 1550 and establish the Church of England just after the GA ends, so be ready. We want to learn Protestantism right at 1549 and there is room to do that.

Sir Bugsy May 24, 2004, 03:45 PM Things are looking up. After Protestantism we need to beeline to piracy.
Gobi Bear May 24, 2004, 10:14 PM If the Dutch beat you to Luther's Theses, is that a loss? I guess perhaps not, the special rules were just to work on it as soon as possible.
Still, it would at least lose you a few "style points".
DeceasedHorse May 24, 2004, 10:38 PM An internet explorer crash ate my turnlog, so here's a summary: We traded for Colonization and Metalurgy. We are paying a heft sum of GPT out as a result. Founded another Colony in Canada, and our first treasure unit is ready for transport. We have just begun a six turn anarchy  and London faces the prospect of either rioting or starving. The Portuguese are at war with practically every other civ; both the Spanish and French tried to get us into MA's versus Henry as well. Mining, Fortification, Piracy, and Professional Armies are known to other civs. Our frigate blockading the strait of Gibralter defeated the first pirate ship seen so far, but is returning home to England to get the damage those scurvy dogs inflicted on it repaired. Our treasury is running a -57 defceit thanks to the anarchy period. Colonial Capital is under construction in Edinburgh. Explorers were chopped up and the pieces used to cut build times down in a couple of cities. Harbor in freetown was rushed. The portuguese will buy saltpeter from us for a fairly decent sum, but I'm not sure how much longer Henry has on this earth, so think twice before making the trade.

Bede May 25, 2004, 06:09 AM DH,
Colonial capital pre-build for Theses?
Good call on trading with Henry. He doesn't have much time left, or many cities with harbors.
A suggestion:
If Henry survives long enough and we have enough troops. Ally with the French and capture Cape Verde and another ville in Africa. Then let the other nations finish him off. Those two spots would make great staging posts for naval and land campaigns againstv the Spanish.

Sir Bugsy May 25, 2004, 09:29 AM I've got it. So priorities are:
Found Church of England
Write 95 Theses. That can't be that hard if we're going to be able to nail them to the church door.
Figure out how to hire privateers.
Hire privateers.
DeceasedHorse May 25, 2004, 11:43 AM We'll need to figure out where the Dutch are building the Theses. They have a large head start, the Demi-God cost factor, and the advantage of us being in an anarchy period, and our best city (London) could not really prebuild since there was nothing for it to use as a prebuild. The Dutch cities are not particularly strong producers, and Edinburgh has mined iron it can use, so there is still a shot. Bristol or London are our other options. If we can't beat the dutch to the wonder, we can just let Edinburgh finish the Colonial Capital since I assume (I only played this scenerio with V 1.0 before, so building any kind of FP was a mistake) that the Colonial Capital operates like a normal Forbidden Palace, so building it in a second-ring city is usually the best choice.
Doc Tsiolkovski May 25, 2004, 11:46 AM the Colonial Capital operates like a normal Forbidden Palace, so building it in a second-ring city is usually the best choice.
Honestly, no! Corruption is significantly lowered; better build the FP somewhere in a productive spot in the Americas. All European cities will be fine with a Courthouse.

Sir Bugsy May 26, 2004, 12:35 PM Tex,
I haven't started to play yet. If you would like to take this watch, I'll take the next.
6thGenTexan May 26, 2004, 12:46 PM Thanks. I'll jump in now.
Sir Bugsy May 26, 2004, 12:49 PM Aye, aye! Captain Tex has the deck!
6thGenTexan May 26, 2004, 04:12 PM 1550AD-0 Brussels is builing the 95 Thesis. They are pulling in at most 7spt - corruption + WLTKD. I will have to wait until we are a Protestant Monarchy to check our production. All cities set to high food and commerce while in Anarchy. Extra clowns turn in to scientist to pick up some beakers. I'll keep our deals with William going until the end of our Anarchy.
1551AD-1 Frigate returns to Plymouth for repairs. Replace the Frigates blocking the English Channel with Carracks. Knights guard our first treasure to be sent home.
1552AD-2 London starves. Did not give it back the Wheat. Transporting Slaves to the new world. Treasure gurared by two Frigates heading home. Map sales exceeds Anarchy loss by 3g.
IBT William asking for alliance against the Portuguese. Sink another Pirate ship. Inca's start the Temple of Kukulcan. Bristol's Navigation School produces an explorer.
1553AD-3 Sailing, sailing over the ocean blue....
IBT Maya's start the Temple of Kukulcan. Magellan's produces another Frigate.
1554AD-4 Pirate Killer returns to Plymouth for repairs. Treasure returned. We are now second behind Spain in VP. The Portuguese capital in now Sao Paulo near the ancient city of Timbuku.
IBT FRENCH Pirate destroyes half our channel blockade returns to port! Williamsburg riots with growth.
1555AD-5 Protestant Monarchy Begins. London switches to Luther's 95 Theses. It needs a Cathedral in town to be nailed to. Due in 23. Change several other builds around. Edinbugh goes to Bank so the Colonial Capitol can be in America. Port Royal and Cobh to Granary and Harbor for growth & workers/colonists. Dublin starts an aqueduct to be ready when needed. York and Bristol (after Bank) will produce Muskets and Frigates. Jamestown stops building colonists to get the Temple to capture 2 fish.
Renegotiate RoP with William and pick up Mining for 51GPT. Went to trade Mining to the Portuguese for Piracy and it is not enough. Our 343g is still doubtful and he will not accept GPT.
I'll gamble with no science for a few turns to see if we get enough gold for the sale. Spain has the most cash but are only offering 15g per GPT. I am not going to give the Big Dog more money.
IBT Aztecs start the Temple of Kukulcan.
1556AD-6 Plymouth Aqueduct-->Cathedral It will need the happiness. Toronto Temple-->Trapper Camp. We are now close to the trade.
IBT Spanish Pirate ship kills a Frigate guarding my explorer heading to Africa. FRENCH Pirate kills Carrack in the English Channel. Both get away.
1557AD-7 Cancel RoP with France. Their Pirates are the reason. Moving a Pair of Frigates to monitor Spanish activity in the Carribean. Pacific has been completely cleared.
1558AD-8 York Musket-->Frigate Bristol Bank-->Frigate Spanish treasure Fleet heading east from Panama City. Colonist on Goto arrives at destination and builds Roanoke before the Spanish do. Starts a Pikeman. Still only close for Tech Trade.
IBT Aztecs demand Invention and leave with nothing. Watch the French Pirate defeat a Dutch Pirate. Lose one frigate but 2nd promotes against another Pirate in the Atlantic.
1559AD-9 English Channel blockade reestablished. 618g & Mining buys Piracy. Bristol and York switch to Sea Dogs. Scientific Methond and Couter Reformation are both known. Check to see if either is available. As a Prodestant Monachy, CR is worth 10g and WM. I go ahead and buy it from France. Sell it to Portugal for Professional Armies and 641g. Adding 1GPT was close so I took their (our) cash. Spend 90g investigating Brussels to see how the 95 Theses race stacks up. How does stuck at size eight, 4 scientists, and only 2spt sound? We should beat theirs by 93 turns. Ship building in 27 at break even.
IBT The French Pirate finally dies attacking our Frigate in the channel.
1560AD-10 Injured Frigate limped into Kingston. Another Treasure has been produced in Yorktown. There are a couple of units active to see where they are sitting.
The Save (http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads7/RBC14E-1560AD.SAV)
We will be ready for the attack on the Spanish in two turns when the last deal expires. I suggest we get everyone to gang up on them.
Sir Bugsy May 26, 2004, 04:47 PM I relieve you sir.
Commander Bugs has the deck.
Gobi Bear May 26, 2004, 04:49 PM Are you guys keeping track of how many treasures you've returned? Remember, the "style" rule is to make half of the ones returned before the end of the game be captured from the Spanish. I want to see some SERIOUS pirate action!
Bede May 26, 2004, 04:54 PM Sir Francis Drake (Bugsy) has just taken command of the Golden Hind.Expect to see freebooters all ove the Atlantic soon.
6thGenTexan May 26, 2004, 09:21 PM Only one Treasure returned with the second waiting in America.
Sir Bugsy May 27, 2004, 11:58 AM Here's a partial post:
RBC14E Log – A little trouble figuring out which save to play from, but that is finally resolved after I remember that the turns are equal to one year each.
Pre-flight – 1560 AD – Our empire has expanded nicely. Martin Luther is busy writing his 95 Thesis in London, due in 17 years. Our only competition is from Brussels, and from Captain Tex’ investigations, they don’t seem to be any competition.
Oh! There are still unplayed moves. Move a carrack north from Kingston and spot what appears to be a Spanish treasure fleet… three frigates guarding a carrack. Set up the carrack to shadow the Spanish fleet. Hopefully I will be able to vector in the Sea Dogs completing next turn.
Treasure won’t move. Looks like they need to be carried like in the Middle Ages Scenario. Yup, the pike has a “seize treasure” button. Move the treasure to the coast.
Diplo check – France is up fortification. Spain and the Netherlands are up SciMeth and Fort. No one will trade. I really don’t see the need for fortification. Are we going to build any coastal forts or Trace Itallienne? I don’t think so. Sci Meth will allow Newton’s. I suppose that would be nice for the VP, but it really won’t help with research since we won’t be doing much. I don’t think I will bother trading for either tech, unless it is a great deal. I think Tex has obtained most of the techs we will need. The American civs are incredibly behind and have a total 13G between the four of them.
MM a few cities due to builds completing next turn. Roanoke is looking like it may be attacked by a Iroquois mounted warrior in the interturn. No troops nearby. Sacrifice growth for shields in Edinburgh to get a bank two turns earlier.
How in London getting shields from coastal tiles? The civilopedia doesn’t shed any light on this one. It isn’t the harbor. Magellan’s?
IBT – Everyone bombards the Portuguese. The Spanish treasure fleet sails due east.
York, Bristol: Sea Dog=> Sea Dog (read up on sea dogs – these are very cool units.)
Freetown: worker=>swiss pike
1. 1561 AD – Find the Spanish treasure fleet. Sort of like tracking a sub. You have a datum, course and speed. Position the Sea Dogs on the Spanish coast. We will sail west to intercept the treasure fleet next turn. Notice that the Portuguese are getting their butts kicked. The deals with the Spanish have now expired. I will wait to declare war when we can nail the treasure fleet.
Edinburgh is MMed to grow again. It will complete its bank next turn. York and Bristol can produce a Sea Dog every three turns.
I hurry the duct in Dublin for 224G. Hurry the granary in Port Royal for 40G. That will give us five cities producing sea dogs.
IBT – A Spanish Pirate sinks one of our sea dogs. The Spanish have a nice amphibious assault against the Portuguese at San Vicente, but fail to take the city.
Edinburgh: Bank=> sea dog
Dublin: Duct=> Sea Dog
Port Royal: Granary=> Sea Dog
Mayans complete Temple of the Moon
2. 1562 G – Due to the loss of the Sea Dog, I’ve lost the angle on the treasure fleet. It will probably make it to port, since it will have the benefit of sailing in sea and coastal tiles. However, with only one SD, success would be questionable. I think we will want to capture these fleets while they are near the Caribbean.
Spend 136G rushing the harbor in Cobh. That will be a sixth sea dog producer.
Since the Spanish might run away with this thing, I decide that having the Channel blockaded is not as important as setting up a proper net to capture Spanish treasure. I wake up the units in the channel and move them towards the Spanish coast.
To be continued….
Pokiste May 27, 2004, 12:21 PM Here's a partial post:

I can hear cannons firing salvos....
Of course drop blocade. I thought it only for slowing down Dutch during peaceperiod.
Aye
6thGenTexan May 27, 2004, 01:23 PM Take your time gathering the raiding fleet. By the rules, we need to attack Spain by 1568. If they are pulling away, use our money to get everyone onboard against the Spanish. Also beware that there is a Spanish settler pair west of our western fur colony. I do not think they had settled by my last turn. I know we have no defense out there so give the Iroquois an old tech for the alliance.
Pokiste May 27, 2004, 02:02 PM About roster
After Bugsy's watch is my turn to take command.
But I will be away all weekend and in sunday start to 133 kilometer bicyclemarathon. And probably have no wish to play civ after that on sunday evening....
:crazyeye:
Is it possible to swap my and Bede's slots so that I can play on monday evening? I dont want to ask be skiped, as I think that after next 40 turns this game will be over.
Best regards
Pokiste
Sir Bugsy May 27, 2004, 03:53 PM 2. (Con’t) – Isabella and William now have shipbuilding. Sell WM around for 14G.
IBT – Lose a caravel to a Spanish pirate and our caravel in the Pacific to a barb caravel. The Spanish capture Sao Vicente from the Portuguese.
Cobh: harbor=> sea dog (swap a tile with Dublin so it is due in 8)
Dutch start Newton’s
3. 1562 AD – Time for some diplomacy. Call on Isabella and declare war.
Call on Charles and arrange for a payment of 7gpt, 323G & WM for his assistance in the Spanish dogpile.
Call on Henry and get him to pay us 56gpt for an alliance against Isabella.
Call on William and pay him 21gpt, 24g & WM for an alliance. I’m not going to get the American civs in on this since we want the Spanish colonies to continue to produce treasure.
Lose a frigate to a pirate. Bombard a Spanish frigate to yellow then lose a sea dog in the attack. I obviously need to figure out how to use these things.
Well that was an inauspicious start to our war.
IBT – Some major sea battles are fought with countless vessels of all nationalities ending up in Davey Jones’ locker.
London produces a frigate.
York, Bristol: SD=> SD
Mayans build temple of the Sun
4. 1564 AD – Bombard a Spanish frigate and sink it with a frigate (redlined)
It looks like the undefended Roanoke is going to be attacked by the Iroquois next IBT.
Attack Mexico City with a knight and kill one defender.
Bombard the Spanish Fleet and a Sea Dog sinks three frigates. I think the bombard part is the key. Send the SD into port for refit.
With that in mind, I change Bristol’s build to a frigate.
Just read Tex’ advice and pull the Iroquois into the war for Siegecraft. Hopefully that will save Roanoke.
IBT – The Iroquois step back.
The Maya declare on the Iroquois.
A Spanish archer and conquistador attack Freetown and die. An archer out of Mexico City attacks our knight and retreats him.
Portugal and France sign a peace treaty. No counter attacks.
5. 1565 AD – Maneuver the fleet to a position between the Azores and Iberia.
IBT – Dublin: SD=> SD
Toronto: Trapper Camp=> Swiss Pike
Kingston riots – hire a scientist.
6. 1566 AD – Find a Spanish treasure fleet SW of the Azores. Two galleons protected by six men-of-war. This is not going to be easy gents. Position our fleet of three frigates and a SD east of Maderia. Bombard a wandering M-O-W. Save the SD for the treasure fleet. I have two SD heading south out of England. In theory, I should be in a position to inflict some damage on the Spanish treasure fleet next turn.
Decide we need to increase our navy. Short rush the Frigate in Bristol for 120G. And cut two turns off the SD build in Cobh with 40G towards a settler.
To be continued……
Sir Bugsy May 27, 2004, 05:04 PM 1566 AD - IBT - The French fleet takes a beating. We sink a pirate and lose a frigate to a MoW.
York: SD=> SD
Bristol: Frigate=> Frigate
7. 1567 AD – Start Bombarding the Spanish fleet, but only inflict damage on two of the MoW. Set up a small wall, but the Spanish fleet will make it to port.
Short rush a SD.
William wants our economy for shipbuilding.
Spain is extending her lead. The score is now: Spain – 13475, France 4825, England 4650
IBT – The Spanish pull the Maya into the war. We sink a Spanish pirate and a MoW. Freetown is lost.
A note, the Spanish don’t pull their treasure fleets into port. They sail them around to the French-Spanish frontier and drop them off there.
Edinburgh: SD=> SD
York riots? WW? Scroll ahead and find that people of Plymouth are unhappy too.
Jamestown: temple=> Colonial Capitol
8. 1568 AD - :wallbang: I should have read the civilopedia on Protestant Monarchy. WW can be a problem.
Set up a spread formation west of the Azores that will move west to locate the treasure fleets.
Bump lux to 20% and fire most of the specialists.
IBT – Spanish pirates sink two frigates and a sea-dog. This is starting to piss me off.
Dublin, Cobh: SD=> SD
9. 1569 AD – Attack Mexico City with our knight and kill another defender.
Our fleet is covering the western Atlantic quite well.
IBT – Our Frigate off Veracruz, fends off two MoW then is sunk by a Spanish pirate. Our knight at Mexico City fights off an archer and promotes.
Port Royal: SD=> SD
10. 1570 AD – Move our knight in Africa across a river.
After Action – Well I don’t think I have furthered our cause very much.
Present score:
Spain – 16475
Netherlands – 5140
France – 4930
England – 4775

Spanish treasure fleet sails through gap. It is reachable by the wolf pack.
1577
HMS Hammer(frigate) and Anvil(MoW) weaken Spanish MenOWar. Wolf pack moves in for the kill. Four
Sea Dogs attack, three are sunk, the fourth captures a Spanish ManOWar(converted to Sea Dog) which
immediately attacks, damages a MoW but sinks. Next Sea Dog attacks and captures another MoW, the
new sea dog attacks and captures the treasure galleon. The last Spanish MoW in the fleet is sunk by
the Sea Dog that captured the first Spanish MoW. There is one Spanish MoW left in the area.
There is another Spanish fleet heading out from Vera Cruz
The elite knight attacks Mexico City and Henry VIII appears. Now how does he get home?
Maya and Iroquois sign a Peace Treaty
Another Spanish Treasure fleet appears in the pass at the Azores
1578
Patrolling wolf packs on the east coast uncover another Spanish fleet heading north of the Spanish
Main. The Spainards may be altering their track. Sea Dogs shadow.
The frigates in the Azores pack bombard the Spanish fleet in the pass and HMS Vulcan(MoW) sails in
and sinks a Spaniard. HMS Anvil is sunk in another attack on the Spaniards. Sea Dog golden Hind
moves in on the exposed Galleon and captures it.
A Spanish fleet is on the coast of Portugal heading north. It could be a treasure fleet returning
to the Americas or.... it could be the precursor to the Spanish Armada!!
Decide to take no chances and kill a ManOWar and cripple the galleon. The battle takes two Sea
Dogs. After battle the fleet sails west to intercept the next Spanish treasure fleet.
Treasure delivered to London. (Totals:Hudson Bay Company 3/Spain 3).
HMS Sea Wolf sinks one Spanish MoW and captures another in the Azores Pass.

take refuge in Jamestown
Blockade the coast of the Bay of Biscay.
Spainards break the line and land treasure.
Netherlands attempts amphib assault on Lisbon with a single MDI, fail
1580
Regrouping fleet and sailing into the North Atlantic to run a circular search pattern for Spanish
fleets. Northwest then west south then east to the Spanish Main.
I suspect the next treasure fleet will return to the southern route. The Mayflower is loaded with
Hudson Bay Furs, there is a Spanish galleon with two Spanish treasures sailing in company. The two
treasure ships will hit the coast in 1, Treasure will have to be unloaded by lighter to keep it
safe from marauders.
Sink the remnants of the Armada
Tactical considerations:
Spanish fleets consistently appear in squadrons of four (3 MoW and the galleon). Head on attacks by Sea Dogs usually don't succeed and the sea dogs are lost, which increases the Spanish score. With three MoW and two Sea Dogs the galleon can be captured and losses minimized. Bombard the MoW until the galleon appears in defense. Then attack with the first Sea Dog. If that attack succeeds the galleon is captured, if it doesn't but the Sea Dog survives, immediately follow up with the second Sea Dog, and press the attack until the galleon is captured. MoW have defensive bombardment and I only saw one Sea DOg retreat after lsoing a skirmish.
If a fleet gets past the Azores it will follow the coast north to the Bay of Biscay. As long as there are warships in the coastal waters between Plymouth and the Bay there will be second and third chances to capture. If it reaches the coast on the border of Spain and France it immediately off-loads and sets sail for the west again. If there is a galleon in Plymouth with three muskets in it it is possible to reach the landing spot and try to capture the treasure on land with an amphib landing.

Results on monday.
6thGenTexan May 30, 2004, 02:14 PM Three cheers for Captain Bede!
Hip Hip Hooray! Hip Hip Hooray! Hip Hip Hooray!
Cheers are in order for Sir Bugsy for sinking the First Spanish Ship.
All of London is buszzng about new promotions! From this day forth, Sir Bugsy will be the Admiral of the Red and Bede will be the Admiral of the White. We shall see if Potiste can claim the title of Admiral fo the Blue or if 6thGenTexan or Deceased Horse will claim that title. The greater question is which Admiral will be named Admiral of the Fleet?
After reading the dispatches form the Atlantic:
Sir Bugsy: 4 Frigates, 3 Man-o-Wars
Bede: 3 Spanish Treasures, 4 Galleons, 1 Frigate, 10 Man-o-War's
Although Admiral Bede has a clear lead at this point, inaccurate repoarting, ie. "Sink the remnants of the Armada", may cause the High Admiralty to choose someone else as Admiral of the Fleet.
Sir Bugsy May 30, 2004, 03:14 PM Huzzah!!! Admiral Sir Bede has broken the code!!
Who cares who has sunk more?!! It is all for the glory of Britain and the Glory of our Queen!
Bede May 30, 2004, 06:47 PM Three cheers for Captain Bede!

The Admiral of the Red and his predecessors provided the means. Without ships and well placed patrols the victories against the Spanish would not have been possible.
Honor demands that I take umbrage at the unfounded accusation by jealous rivals of "inaccurate reporting". In reviewing the files on hand in the Admiralty I find no intelligence regarding Spanish ships remaining in the Bay of Biscay. If there are any they were obscured by the flames and smoke of battle. :smug:
There are Spanish ships at sea, but none threatening "the sceptered isle", and treasure and flags for all.
Pokiste May 31, 2004, 03:41 PM Gentlemen. This is Admiralty war diary. There are no changes in text since it was started....
Age of captains seems over and age of admirals has started. Some sentences from Admiral Pokiste speech to his captains at London Admiralty Building:
?Gentleman. We don?t need just ships anymore. We need fleets. Our predecessors left us good knowledge about enemy?s transport routes and tactics. If we build bigger fleet and collect better intelligence then our campaign aim can?t be less then shutting down all Spanish traffic at Atlantic.?
Preturn: move scout to iron hill near Rio to spy on possible Spanish Treasure fleet near African coast.
IT Dutch Fleet passes by.
1581 Three treasures arrives London. We have now 789 g in bank. (total 4 Hudson bay and 5 Spain.. Nice.) Rush ships: 3 seadogs and 1 MoW will leave shipyards next turn. Two seadogs this year. Upgrade last frigate. Rush harbors in Kingston and Norfolk.
Fleet combat orders: Form Taskforce at patrol area south-west form Canary islands with orders intercept and capture Spanish transports coming from New World and Africa.
7 ships wait next turn near Oporto. 1 Seadog scouts near Panama city.
IT We lose 3 ships to Spanish navy. And Dutch lose three MoW and 1 galleon. Argh.
Two Spanish fleets sail nearby. One probably full of pistols. I think that ?no intelligence regarding Spanish ships? and ?If there are any they were obscured by the flames? were not completely correct. Admiralty starts large-scale overhaul and keelhaul in intelligence department.
And one Spanish MoW seen near Rio.
1582 There are Spanish ships near Brest. Three MoW and galleon. Four our MoWs damage escorts and then Seadog attacks Elite!!! Galleon. And sinks. And Spanish MoW are up again in stack. Hate it....
Fifth MoW attacks and sinks. And Seadog attacks and sinks.
We are damned say?s somebody in crew. Now is it personal and I shall go till bitter end if needed.
Seadog enslaves MoW. And elite galleon is up again. There are two units available: new regular Seadog and 2hp veteran Seadog. Regular attacks, takes down 1 hp and sinks. Veteran attacks, takes down 1 hp and sinks.
Everything is in one card now. And our last available Seadog sinks under Spanish ship artillery fire.
We have lost 6 ships.
Altogether 9 ships in this turn. And as we have lost possibility stop treasure we stop here. Spain has lost 1 ship and has 22120 VP. We have 14075.
Mourning in London.
Her some paragraphs form Churchill speech in 1940: We shall not flag nor fail. We shall go on to the end. We shall fight on the seas and oceans; we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air. We shall defend our island whatever the cost may be; we shall fight on beaches, landing grounds, in fields, in streets and on the hills.
Rush two seadogs. More ships will be built next turn. Lets try again.
IT Spanish Treasure fleet passes Kingston heading west. Another fleet leaves Spain to south. Some Dutch movement.
1583 War weariness everywhere. I can understand all and every protester. If naval war with Spain continues as during previous turns, the future of protestant monarchy will be dark. Rush 3 Seadogs. Furs for wine to France.
Seadog shadows Treasure fleet heading west form Kingston.
Killergalleon is still at sea, covered by two MoWs. Two MoWs damage Spanish MoW. Seadog attacks again Killergalleon. And sinks. As usually. And second seadog sinks. MoW sinks redlined Spanish MoW. Loses 2hp. What a hell is going on. 2-1 Spaniards are still ahead.
MoW sinks Spanish MoW. 2-2.
Killergalleon is alone and redlined. Our seadog sinks it. This ship was EMPTY.
Final score 3-2. We make some progress. Altogether: during last two turns we have lost 12 ships. Spain 3. We have 5 available warships. Two are at dock.
IT Spanish MoW sinks another our MoW. 13-3. Spanish Treasure fleet near Madeira. Another fleet in the middle of Channel and heads east.
Our scout near Rio is wasted.
1584
Landing operation?!
Wake musketmans in Mayflower and send them to London and York.
Seadog sinks redlined MoW. 13-4.
Our MoWs, cannon and Trebuchet bombard Spanish fleet. Galleon appears in stack. Seadog attacks and sinks. 14-4. Seadog sinks MoW 14-5. Seadog enslaves MoW. 14-6. And Seadog sinks MoW.14-7.
Redlined galleon sinks our Seadog. 15-7. No. Wrong. Galleon sinks 2 Seadogs. 16-7
And finally: our veteran Seadog sends this damned galleon to hell. 16-8.
We have 5 available warships. 3 are in dock.
And war weariness is increasing...
And we can?t afford peace for 20 turns.
Rush MoW and 2 Seadogs.
Make peace with Maya.
IT Spanish privateer sinks our Seadog shadowing Treasure fleet. 17-8
1585
Warwearines more then 50% everywhere. 6 ships at sea near Oporto to try luck (what this?) with Treasure fleet. Rush 2 Seadogs.
IT zzzzzzz. Some Dutch fleet movement.
Spanish pirate passes by.... Good.
1586
Unrest in London. And Treasure fleet near Oporto. 11 ships are ready to attack. Her we go again.
After some bombardment galleon appears. And elite Seadog opens fire... Galleon sinks. EMPTY. 17-9.
Privateer sinks Seadog. 18-9. Seadog sinks Privateer. 18-10. Will not fight with MoWs to save Seadogs.
Rush 2 seadogs.
IT Spanish fleet sinks 2 seadogs. 20-10.
Dutch make peace with Spain.
1587
Seadog enslaves MoW. 20-11. Seadog sinks MoW. 20-12.
Spain has 24360 VP. We have 14530.
I will play my last turns tomorrow. It's to late today.
Sir Bugsy Jun 01, 2004, 10:02 AM Kepp heart Admiral Pokiste! The gods of war will bless us soon.
Pokiste Jun 01, 2004, 11:17 AM 1587
Seadog enslaves MoW. 20-11 Seadog sinks MoW 20-12.
Rush MoW and Seadog.
Mayflower brings one treasure from Hudson Co. Now we have 5 from Hudson and 5 from piracy.
Change of tactics: to avoid unwanted interturn casualties move fleet away form Spanish coast. From 20 lost ships 6 sunk during interturn attacks. This number is too high. New operations area is near Spanish Main route. New repair bases will be Kingston and Norfolk.
Move knight and leader in Africa to north with aim reestablish observation post near Rio.
IT Leader in Africa is killed by Spanish archer. Iros land in Panama.
1588
Spanish treasure fleet prepares landing near Madrid. Prepare 3 muskets for landing. Main fleet heads to Spanish Main. Mayflower heads to New World.
Rush 3 Seadogs and 1 MoW.
IT Spanish fleet sinks 4 our MoWs and one Seadog. We sink one MoW. 25-13.
1589
Remaining 3 damaged ships form so-called Main Fleet will try to reach Norfolk.
During battle near London we lose 4 Seadogs. Spain loses 1 MoW. 29-14. Spanish fleet probably prepares landing in Scotland. God save the Queen.
Rush 2 Seadogs.
BTW: our Knight in Africa is killed.
IT All ships are floating after this IT. I think this is good news at moment.
Iros are defeated near Panama.
1590
We sink MoW near London. Seadog enslaves MoW near London. Seadog sinks galleon. 29-17.
Our Fleet is divided into two weak squadrons: one in Caribbean sea and second in England.
To next player: avoid Spanish coast. We have lost there 12 ships during interturns. Our main tactics should be interceptions at Spanish Main. One ship must start patrols near African coast to give early warning for intecept. We have 2 treasures ready in America and 2 in Norfolk.
Total: lost 29 ships, including 10 MoWs. Enemy: 17 ships. Including 3 galleons. What is now second result after Bedes 18 kills. :D
Captured treasures: O
We have 15775 VP. Spain has 25170.
To win we need capture 10 treasures.
I hope that I have consumed all our bad luck.
Rear admiral Pokiste. Retired. :suicide:
And again: avoid Spanish coast

6thGenTexan Jun 01, 2004, 11:54 AM I shall avenge our lost seamen and claim all of the Atlantic for King and Country!
DeceasedHorse Jun 01, 2004, 02:45 PM Truly, it is a dark time for all of England. We have faced dark times before, my countrymen, and surely shall again in the future! We shall never give up, never surrender, and defend our lovely home with to our last breaths! We shall fight the Spanish dogs all over the world, and we shall drive them back! Our MDI shall make amphibious assaults and steal their plunder (they have a higher attack and are cheaper than muskets!)! We shall sound a call all over Europe, asking that our bretheren aid us in our struggle against this dark tide of evil, this unholy crusade! (This may be a dangerous gamble; if the Spanish actually win and/or take cities from the other European powers, they will get a lot of VP.) Let them send their Armadas against us, we shall meet them on the high seas, and should they stray near our homes, we shall welcome them with cannon fire (If the Spanish are right on our doorstep, some land-based artillery will help even the odds) God save the Queen! God save the queen!

Looks like Spain is changing tactics. Sailing north then west to the Caribbean. Unless a Spanish fleet directly threatens the coast let it sail west.
Good call on the artilllery, DH. Weaken 'em in our coastal waters then sink the MoW.
Way to keep up the pressure, Pokiste.
Pokiste Jun 02, 2004, 01:45 AM Bede wrote: Looks like Spain is changing tactics. Sailing north then west to the Caribbean.
My comments:
I belive that three fleets I sunk where in reality invasionfleets not treasurefleets. They appeared in radar near Pyrenee peninsula and took course to England. And turned east. Not west. Last Spanish fleet was sunken near London and it headed north-east.
And treasures travel via Spanish Main. Even if Spain uses Northern route to send ships to Carribiean then return anyway with cargo via Spanish Main
Finding ally's is not that easy. Dutch asked for gpt payment and same where France. We should before signing alliance evaluate their military might.
On more idea: when all ships where busy near Spanish coast I took risk and send Mayflower form New World to England unescorted. Result: Spain send one Privateer to intercept. And this Privateer showd no interest to our warships during interturn and where sunk during next turn. Mayflower acted as bait. If we have will have in future bigger navy maybe we can use this tacticks to reduce Spanish navy. But not yet. First we need strong sqadron at Spanish Main ( at least 15 vessels) and spyship near Rio.
Best regards
Pokiste.
6thGenTexan Jun 02, 2004, 11:29 AM Unfortunately a sick child prevented me from adding Spanish Oak to the bottom of the sea yesterday. I did have time to look around at a few things and have a few questions.
Are the 2 treasures in the Spanish Galleon in Norfolk captured or are they from our gold mine there and are waiting a trip home?
Where is Spain getting its saltpeter? I see some in their borders in Sount America, but I did not see a native source for them. Is someone trading salt to them? It may be one of the civs demanding GPT to ally against Spain. Do the MOWs and Frigates require salt?
I should be able to play tonight.
Pokiste Jun 02, 2004, 12:38 PM Treasures are from our goldmine.
I sold Spain some salpeter during my first round at the year 1527. There is mine near France border. MoWs need salt. Good plan Tex:goodjob:!!
6thGenTexan Jun 02, 2004, 12:48 PM I'm thinking resource denial is a better use of our muskets. Dropping them off next to Madrid to slow/prevent treasure ladings is suicidal. We may capture the treasure but will not survive to get it home again. I'll head out to keep them from the salt.
6thGenTexan Jun 04, 2004, 09:01 AM 1590 State of the Navy
4 SD monitoring traffic from Carribean west
2SD repairing in Norfolk
1MoW of Eastern Seaboard of America
Mayflower in Jamestown
2SD and a MoW repairing in London
2MoW, SD and 3 muskets on a Galleon in Plymouth
Sortie out a MoW from Plymouth and bombard a SMoW off the coast of Brest.
Rush the MoW in Bristol.
France is given 21GPT as long as they will fight the Spanish.
IBT Renu RoP with Portugal. French complete Newtons in Paris. Iroquois Carrack heading across the Atlantic.
1591-1 Wounded MoW limps back into Kingston for repairs. Galleon ferrys workers to Norfolk. MoW bombs Panama City on the way to the Spanish Main. 2 SD stay in Norfolk for repairs and another pair remain in London. Move one SD to station near Cape Verde Islands to see in the Spanish are bringing treasure from Africa or South America. 4 MoW and a SD protect the Galleon dropping off the 3 Muskets on the Spanish Salt. They move back to be 6 leagues from the nearest Spanish Port. I notice that the Spanish have destroyed the French Salt mines. I spend our gold on the Temple in Kingston to expand our border to see more Spanish waters.
IBT Spain drops off a Treasure.
1592-2 Two American Colonies decide to riot. York SD-->Cathedral Dublin SD-->SD Williamsburg Harbor-->SD Kingston Temple-->MoW Moving 2 SD and a Mow to take up station S of the Canary Islands. The French archers have cleared the Spanish out of the Pyrenees Mountains. I decide to attack the treasure and the 95TH Rifles defeat the Spanish Muskets. Hei is covered by another vet and a regular unit. Our Fleet 4 MoW and 5 SD protect the beach and destroyed the Salt mine. Rush the temple in Norfolk.
IBT Spanish MOW sinks our SD near the Cape Verde Islands and continues South. Wounded Mow arrives in Oporto. An Elite MoW approachs our Fleet.
1593-3 Edinburgh SD-->MoW Norfolk Temple-->MoW MoW bombards wounded Spanish and a SD sends him to the deep. Our fleet goes 3 for 4 on the bombardment but the Spanish ship has lost all its masts. Our regular SD goes in and gains the experience sinking him. Treasure heads to London escorted by 2 SD. Move Fleet out to see to far for the Spanish to attack and return to a friendly port. Muskets return to claim Salt Hill.
I swap most of the American colonies over to Barracks. We are in a position to keep treasure from the Spanish. We will need to attack some of their colonies to catch up in VP's.
IBT Spanish Pirate attacks our MoW South of the Canary Islands and dies.
1594-4 London Frigate, MoW-->MoW Plymount SD-->MDI Calverton Barrack-->MDI Frigate Upgraded to MoW. Deliver Spanish Treasure. Start journey of native treasure from Toronto. 5 MoW and 7 SD are patroling NW of the Iberian Peninsula. One MoW and 2 SD are south of the Canary Islands and 2 SD are on the west side of the Spanish Main. Wounded SD and Mow are arriving in Norfolk.
IBT Spain is denied a chance of peace then loses a MoW to our Fleet.
1595-5 Yorktown Barrack-->MDI Victor from fight returns to Plymouth but replacement arrives. Rush the Cathedral in York and Temple on Roanoke.
IBT Renue RoP with the Dutch and French.
1596-6 York Cathedral-->MDI Roanoke Temple-->Barrack Rush Barrack in Toronto.
IBT Spanish Treasure fleet heads to Africa.
1597-7 Dublin, Cobh SD-->SD Tornoto Barrack-->MDI Return native Treasure. Move Fleet to Spanish coast to see if there are any ships hiding in port. The 95th Rifles and 2 cannons arrive on Salt Hill allowing the 2 muskets to start pillaging. Rush Barrack in Roanoke and MDIs in Yorktown and Edinburgh.
IBT Bristol riots.
1598-8 Roanoke joins Yorktown and Edinburgh building MDI. Rush MDI in Plymouth and Calverton. Split Fleet to start bombardment of Spanish coast. Still Following Treasure Fleet off of Africa. The Dutch have several Treasure Fleets in operation but we have twice the VP's.
IBT
1599-9 London Frigate,MoW-->MDI Plymouth and Calverton continue to produce MDI. Upgrade Frigate.
IBT Lose one of my pillagers.
1600-10 York MDI-->MDI Bristol MoW-->cathedral I think the Treasure Fleet arrived at La Paz. WE have 2 MoW and 3 SD covering that area. They will have to pass the rest of our ships to get home. I attacked St.Augustine (Greenland) with a MoW and 2 MDI. All were successful but a 2HP Musket remains with 2 HP MDI. We will need more Galleons but not sure who to rush them.
I overestimated the challenge of landing in Spain. They did not even come out to look at us until I was south of Madrid. Bring at least 3 MDI to attack a colony. The only Spanish Navy I know of is in an African Port. We are about to totally prevent the Spanish from returning any more treasure. At that point I say return one of ours for every colony we capture. We have several sitting in Norfolk now.
We have shown the Spanish the power of our ships, now lets show them the strength of our marines.
The Game (http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads7/RBC14E-1600AD.SAV)
Sir Bugsy Jun 04, 2004, 09:30 AM Admiral Tex, your time in command of Her Majesty's Royal Navy has been one of great Success. You shall hereafter be known as Admiral Sir Texan, Admiral of the Blue.
Sounds like we have subtlety made a strategy shift. While half of our treasure VP will come from Spanish treasure, it sounds like we are adding some conquest points as well. So here's the question. Should we sack treasure producing Spanish colonies? or just non-producers like Greenland?
BTW, I got it. Expect dispatches by late evening Pacific time.
Bede Jun 04, 2004, 09:51 AM Well done. Admiral 6thGenTex. Your actions at sea and on land are models of effectiveness and economy. The Virgin Queen will be pleased to name you a Knight of the Realm upon your return to London.
Pokiste Jun 04, 2004, 02:53 PM As I see that Spanish navy was not that big I thought.
Some ideas:
Spanish seatraffic is now down. Maybe there are some treasures waiting for transportation in treasureproduction towns....
We should try attack those towns instead of invading Greenland. Best and nearest variants are IMHO Cartagena (has 2 different resource.), and Sao Vincenta in Africa as goldtown (treasure after every five turns).
best regards
Pokiste
Sir Bugsy Jun 04, 2004, 03:13 PM I suppose Spanish treasure is Spanish treasure, no matter how we get it. I know that Blackbeard pillaged Kingston Jamacia on at least one occasion, so we'll be historically correct at least.
Sir Bugsy Jun 05, 2004, 10:35 AM Pre-sail – 1600 AD – VP status: Spain 27085, England 18460 We’re cutting this close. There are some unmoved units.
Move our fleet at St. Augustine (which is really on the south end of Greenland) into neutral waters.
Check out Admiral Tex’s fleet deployment. Hopefully the musket on the saltpeter can hold. One of the cannon on the salt hasn’t been fired so I wound a nearby LB. Tex has several MDI in the works. I’ll need something to transport them with, change York to a galleon.
Notice that missionaries are now available. Research them.
Plymouth is very unhappy. Hire two clowns there. We have 15 specialists. Experiment time. Increasing lux by 10% ends up costing us 24gpt, but we speed three builds. I think I leave that.
IBT – SD sinks a Dutch pirate and a Spanish pirate. Our musket outside Madrid kills three LB before succumbing to an LB. Two Spanish galleons leave America for the Spanish Main.
1. 1601 AD – Not much.
IBT – Two Spanish targets sail towards Iberia.
London: MDI=>SD
Dublin, Port Royal, Williamsburg: SD=>SD
Cobh: SD=>MDI
2. 1602 AD – The Spanish fleet consists of one unescorted galleon, and an caravel escorted by an MoW. Wake up the fleets and bombard. Our Seadog sinks the caravel and captures the Conquistador and LB inside. The MoW is enslaved. A third SD enslaves the galleon with a LB onboard.
A third fleet (three MoW & galleon) is now in view east of Madeira. Hopefully I can snag it.
I think those units I enslaved are carrying treasure since they are red.
IBT – Dutch and Aztecs ally against Portugal.
The new Spanish fleet sails past Oporto and Lisbon heading towards the Bay of Biscay :smoke: An unescorted galleon appears.
3. 1603 AD – Return one of the treasures to our capitol. Bombard the MoW down using Admiral Bede’s formula. But lose two SD to the Galleon. Enslave the unescorted galleon to capture two units and their treasure. One SD sinks two of the MoW. A single SD sinks the remaining MoW and enslaves the Galleon and captures one treasure.
Get three more Spanish treasure delivered (4 total) VP check – Spain: 27755, England: 22950 We’re catching up!!
Our treasury is very healthy now also. Change York’s galleon build to a MoW. Short rush the MoW. Rush Plymouth’s, Cobh’s and Edinburgh’s MDI’s
IBT – The Iroquois land a knight and a spear next to Panama City. A treasure galleon sails from Panama City.
We lose our wine supply. Renew our furs for wine deal with France.
Edinburgh: MDI=>SD
Magellan’s produces a frigate
London: SD=> SD
York: MoW=>MoW
Plymouth: MDI=> MDI
Cobh: MDI=>SD
4. 1604 AD – Upgrade the new frigate for 30G.
@ St Augustine: Take a hp off the musket defending. Kill the Musket. St. Augustine is undefended? Ahh Missionaries. Kill two missionaries, but the city stands.
Deliver two more treasures. (6 total)
Upgrade the Spanish caravel
VP status: Spain: 27805, England 25010
Land three MDI and a LB on the Spanish saltpeter to reinforce the musket.
Two English treasures sail from America.
Rush four MDI in America.
IBT – Hiawatha wants to renew our MA against the Spanish. Why certainly my friend! The Iroquois knight at Panama fails to take the city.
Yorktown, Toronto, Calverton, Roanoke: MDI=>MDI
5. 1605 AD - @ St Augustine: Lose an MDI killing two missionaries. There is now a slave defending.
Bombard the new Spanish galleon to red, and enslave it with a SD, capture another treasure.
In Spain, bombard then kill a passing Spanish LB.
Return two English treasures (totals: 6 Spanish, 2 English)
Short rush several builds.
VP Check: Spain: 27905, England: 27120
IBT – Lose an MDI in Spain kill a LB.
France and Portugal sign an MA against Spain.
London: SD=>SD
Jamestown riots! :wallbash: it was going to complete the Colonial Capitol this turn.
6. 1606 AD – There is now a Swiss Pike in St. Augustine. Kill the SP.
Another treasure delivered (totals: Spanish 7, English 2)
VP Check: England: 28180, Spain: 27965
IBT – Portugal brings thr Inca into the Spanish dogpile.
Dublin, Cobh: SD=> SD
7. 1607 AD - @ St. Augustine – Kill a missionary and lose an MDI.

Jamestown completes Colonial Capitol. Looks like the forbidden palace. Starts galleon
Port Royal: SD=> SD
8. 1608 AD – Pick up a treasure in Norfolk.
IBT – Iroquois drop off at least three units next to Panama City.
Another frigate from Magellan’s
9. 1609 AD – Pick up five treasures in the New World.
@ St Augustine: Kill a Swiss Pike
@ Rio de Janeiro: Lose two MDI.
Upgrade our new frigate.
Short rush a few more builds.
IBT – London: SD=>SD
York: MoW=> MDI
10. 1610 AD – Kill another missionary at St Augustine.
VP Check: Spain: 28620, England: 28230
After Action Report: 9 treasures returned, 7 Spanish, 2 English. The Spanish treasure income has dried up.
The only other power bringing back treasure right now is France. We have 13 turns left on a deal with them.
There are thirty turns left in the game. I renamed the units carrying treasure to indicate what they are carrying.
This has been a fun game gents. I stand relieved By Admiral Bede for the last time.
Save: http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads7/RBC14E,_1610_AD.SAV
Sir Bugsy Jun 05, 2004, 10:45 AM I tried to look back on the last three turn logs to find out how we stand on the treasure ratio. It appears that at the end of Bede's turns we were at 3 Spanish/3 English. Pokiste didn't get any, but set up Tex. Tex got some back, but I'm not sure how many. It sounds like at least one English treasure got back.
After re-reading Tex's log, I should have produced more Marines, We could probably capture a Spanish treasure or two at Panama City. That would put us over the top. There are at least five defenders, having watched the Iroquois' attempts to take the island. No telling how many missionaries. We have a few in the New World you could bring along.

6thGenTexan Jun 05, 2004, 01:52 PM I returned a Spanish and a native treasure to keep things even. We had several more native treasures sitting around but I did not move those since I did not see another Spanish treasure.
The Dutch are also returning treasure from North America and Africa.
It is also time to monitor the Single City Culture. The Mayan capital has ahead during my turns but I think they were still under 3000. We may need to land our marines there if it gets to close.
Sir Bugsy Jun 05, 2004, 11:34 PM So we have five more Spanish treasures than English treasures. There are six on their way to England. We won't want to use them all.
Pokiste Jun 06, 2004, 03:20 AM I tried to look back on the last three turn logs to find out how we stand on the treasure ratio. It appears that at the end of Bede's turns we were at 3 Spanish/3 English. Pokiste didn't get any, but set up Tex. Tex got some back, but I'm not sure how many. It sounds like at least one English treasure got back.
During my turns arrived treasures captures by Bede and one Hudson co treasure.
Pokiste Jun 06, 2004, 03:31 AM I can't play till thursday as I leave for short vacation.
best regards
pokiste

Seven treasures returned will win the game....6 domestic and one Spanish.
Sir Bugsy Jun 07, 2004, 02:02 PM So we just need to capture one more Spanish treasure. I think the only way we may get that is by force since the Spanish navy has been decimated. Panama City will be a prime location for treasure hunting.
DeceasedHorse Jun 07, 2004, 02:31 PM Ah crap. I was recovering from Grad night on saturday, sorry guys.

Sir Bugsy Jun 08, 2004, 04:04 PM :salute: Well done Admiral Sir Bede! I see you are familiar with Patrick O'Brian, one of my all time favorite authors.
You have now won this scenario twice! :D So tell me is it difficult for a monk to have his missionaries converting the Papists?
Kiech Jun 08, 2004, 04:13 PM LOL, thats true, Bede is the REAL winner of the RBC game this month! LOL!
Bede Jun 08, 2004, 05:27 PM :salute: Well done Admiral Sir Bede! I see you are familiar with Patrick O'Brian, one of my all time favorite authors.
All of Patrick O'Brian rested at my bedside for re-reading every cold winter night in Minnesota until a vengeful, soon to be ex-wife, gave all twenty volumes to a book sale.

   First, I can see why she would be an ex-, and second, I could see why that would lead one to the monastry. He also has a few non Aubrey-Maturin novels that are very good reading as well.
6thGenTexan Jun 09, 2004, 10:32 AM Well done all!
Sir Bugsy Jun 09, 2004, 02:46 PM Our final score was 59000. Not too shabby for a bunch of Freebooters. :D
Pokiste Jun 11, 2004, 11:14 AM Well done. Thank you to team and Gobibear for nice variant.
What is next scenario?
Gobi Bear Jun 11, 2004, 11:37 AM I'm glad this variant worked out so well. I hadn't tried it or tested it; it was just some off-the-cuff ideas. It's always great when those actually work first try.
Bede Jun 11, 2004, 01:44 PM @Gobi Bear,
Thanks for the suggestions. It played very well, just the right amount of tension and searching for solutions to novel problems.
