Howdy all..

Just wondering if anyone can point me in the right dircection towards a free .pcx editor, or can work out what I am doing wrong with the one I am using. I was using an editor called irfanview, but when I added the units32 unit pics to the main units 32 file it blurred to the right. When I undo and save, the file is not blurred anymore, so it seems it has something to do with the individual unit picture. It does this for every unit I have tried so far. I was thinking that another editor may handle whatever problem it causes fine. I may be doing something wrong though, because I haven't done a lot of modding before. Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers...

When I edit my units_32, I either a) Edit it with Paintshop pro (www.jasc.com) or b) Copy paste the new unit32's into a bmp with paint, then open the bmp in paintshop pro, and load the correct pallette.

For some reason, I can't download your units_32.pcx...

I think Zulu would be the most helpful person in this matter

OK, now I got the units_32.pcx, and your problem is propably that the palette is messed up. Get the free trial version of Paintshop Pro, open the original units_32.pcx (from any of the 3 civ versions: Civ3/PTW/C3C). Then press Image->Palette->Save Palette. Save it as Units_32 or something. Now load your new units_32.pcx.Press Image->Palette->Load Palette. Now select the palette you just made. Press load, and save the file. It should work after this.

I use Corel 10 Photo-Paint and notice that KiNGedz's units_32.pcx file is 24-bit RGB, not 8-bit paletted file as used in the game. The mode of the pcx file has to be changed to 8-bit paletted using the sequence mentioned earlier by Paasky.

Or, in other words: don't use irfanview. Or rather: use it too look, but don't touch. ;) I've seen people have problems with it before, the program you use must be able to handle palettes (aka color tables). Three programs that are useful for civ modding is Photoshop, Paintshop Pro and GIMP. Personally I use photoshop.

Hi

I use irfanview, but not the way you are using it. irfanview is great for resizing or sharpening images, but after this you must always decrease the colour depth back to 256.

For actual editing images I use "i.mage" can be down loaded from the link below. Its very simple to use, just cut and past very easy, you can have multiple copies running and use copy to clipboard in one and past from clipboard into the second i.mage program.

As I say nothing fancy but it gets the job done, and does it well.

Hope this helps.

I still suspect that the transparency will be all wacked with this program...

That was what I needed to do. So now it works fine.

Hope this helps.

Sure did... :goodjob:

For now irfanview will serve my purpose, but I will try some of the other suggestions later on. GIMP is free or trial I think, and I will definately give i.mage a run. Thanks to all of you for helping me out, I really appreciate it.

Cheers..

mrtn,

It’s about 40/60 with the transparency issue but very easy to fix, just a simple touch up required on about 40%, which might sound a lot, but we are only talking a few pixels nothing major.

Once again I can certainly recommend the free program "i.mage" as a pcx-editing tool; it is by far the easiest program I have seen.

See above link. For "i.mage"
